First Experience/service date = June 2011 While on the phone with the dispatcher/scheduler I made it clear that I needed both services (de- and re-winterization) and that we needed the technician there as early as possible in an effort to coincide with the water-turn-on-time. The technician was more than an hour late. I ended up doing the de-winterization myself to keep on track with the appraisal schedule. When the tech finally arrived, I confirmed that I already completed the work and he informed me that I still had to pay for a trip charge. Realizing that I also had to have a receipt for 'de-winterization' on that same day, I asked the tech to provide a receipt for the work that I had done myself. The tech confirmed that in order to provide a receipt, he would have to complete the work himself. I agreed to this and asked if he could provide a receipt for re-winterization. The tech confirmed that Applewood PH&E does not perform winterization services and that I would have to find another provider. I made it clear that the dispatcher said that they would be happy to perform both services but the tech confirmed that they do not provide re-winterization service. (re-winterization was required by the listing agent) When we discussed pricing and payment for the de-winterization service, the "Membership Fee" and actual service were so close in price that I chose the membership fee. 2nd Experience (August 2011) I asked for Applewood PH&E to provide an estimate for repairs. The tech arrived, reviewed the situation and told me that he would have a quote e-mailed to me by the end of the day. I never received a quote that day so I called dispatch (the following afternoon) and asked them to contact the tech and have the quote sent to me. The tech called within 5min and confirmed that he asked his office staff to type up the estimate and send it to me yesterday. He called back to his office, and asked for the quote to be sent. Within approximately 5-10min, I received a call from the office staff confirming that the quote had been sent. I reviewed the quote and was surprised to see that it was nearly 3X more expensive than the other contractor that bid on the same job. Applewood PH&E has fantastic employees! Everyone I spoke to was courteous, professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Unfortunately, these good people are subject to poor quality policies, procedures and pricing that makes it difficult for them to place the customer first in all their efforts. Applewood PH&E (corporate) is more focused on making money and enforcing policies than they are in providing a quality service to their customers. I highly recommend Applewood PH&E when it comes to their employees. However, I highly discourage using them for any job because of their corporate policies and pricing.
Description of Work: First Experience/service date = June 2011 I called Applewood Plumbing, Heating and Electric and asked if they could perform de-winterization as well as re-winterization on a property I was having appraised. 2nd Experience (August 2011) - I thought I would give them a 2nd try. Having closed on the property, I inspected the property to find that someone broke into the house and stole several of the copper supply lines and attachments. Since I was a member of Applewood Plumbing, Heating and Electric, I thought to include them in the bidding for repair work knowing that I would not have to pay for a trip charge.

We moved from another state into a new house and the computer and TV wiring in room to be used for office needed to be moved so we could finish setting up the office. So we wanted it done within a day or two day of moving in. Then we decided we needed a floor plug-in in the family room for more light and we needed one ceiling light added in the family room. An electrician from this company came out the next day and gave us an honest but absurd estimate of the costs, which we thought were extravagant but he would start the job the next day. The company also pushed for us to join their Gold Club to get discounts and an inspection later in the year. The quality of the work was good and done in a timely manner, but the costs were so high we won't use them again. Overall, it cost us about $500 per hour for the work that was done.
Description of Work: Move computer and tv wiring to another wall five feet away, install one floor plug-in electrical outlet and install one ceiling light.

My water heater died suddenly. In December. I called Applewood, along with several others, to get a quote. Their salesman, not a repairman, came out and give me a quote of over $3500 for a 75 gallon heater. This included a "membership" to a preferred customer program that would ensure any future requests for service I may have would be given a higher priority. Really? I need to pay extra (on top of an already outrageously high base price) for good service? I also got the distinct impression Applewood was trying to take advantage of a seemingly desperate situation. I thanked the polite young man for coming, then called Sears. I paid LESS THAN ONE THIRD the cost of what Applewood quoted me, including some plumbing work to bring everything up to code. P.S It seems these days I am offered some type of "memberships" or "clubs" on almost every appliance and electronic purchase: pay extra to ensure the darn thing works. It should work to begin with! I refuse to buy into this type of scam (excuse the pun) and never, ever pay for these types of programs.

Called to request the membership included tune up and cleaning. Membership does not guarantee prompt service for non emergency repairs such as a furnace cleaning (it took two months to get a technician to come out for the cleaning). The technician (in my opinion seemed new to HVAC) spends less than 30 minutes with my furnace, comes upstairs and announces he needs to talk to me and my whole family together. Reports that my 7 year old furnace has a gas leak in the valve, a bad capacitor, and cracks in the heat exchanger causing carbon monoxide to be blown into the house so he cannot turn back on my furnace (i will have to do it myself). He does not show me his proof of any of these issues but wants to quote a new furnace and schedule the replacement (quotes me 7000.00 to replace a 2000.00 furnace). I get two other opinions so that i can get competitive quotes on the replacement, including the installer of the furnace. They point out it is under warranty (which the tech from applewood did not bother to look into with the paperwork attached to the side of the furnace). Two techs (one with 20+ years experience) from other companies reported my furnace is fine after spending an hour looking for the issues reported (gas leak, bad capacitor, and cracks) and also noted the tech from applewood did not reassemble my furnace correctly. They showed me the heat exchanger and the fact that there are no cracks. The first tech to inspect the furnace also noted (and showed me) the blower wasn't reinstall properly, what things were not cleaned and were not touched. Called the office and reported this, they took it seriously but backed their tech in the evaluation without sending out another tech for a second opinion. Wanted to send the same tech back out and meet with the installer's tech to review the findings. I was not pleased with the scare tactic used by the applewood tech (tells my whole family they could be subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning) so i did not agree to the meeting. Interesting how a cleaning, tune up and inspection is not priority yet could result in finding a life threatening carbon monoxide leak.
Description of Work: Joined their preferred customer club to save costs on a plumbing repair. Membership includes free HVAC tune up and cleaning. This was related to the tune up and cleaning.

When he arrived he showed me the process in his book with the price. They price the job before they look at anything and there is no flexiblity involved. The price is the price. I had a great experience with Applewood. First the scheduling of the appointment was painless. The dispatcher called me back within ten minutes of my email inquiry. This was about 8:30 am, and she had an opening that morning during the 9am-11am window. The serviceman arrived at 9:30, which I thought was very timely. Prior to his arrival Applewood emailed me a picture of the serviceman with a list of his credentials and professional experience, which I found to be a nice touch. The serviceman was very amiable and presented himself well. When entering my home he slipped booties over his boots, which I appreciated. After inspecting the light and the light switch, he found that there was no problem with the light itself, but had to do with (embarrassingly enough) a halogen bulb that was of the wrong voltage. I of course felt like a complete imbecile, but the serviceman very graciously said that it was nothing to be embarrassed about and that this sort of thing happens all the time. I chose to believe him to soothe my bruised ego. Here is the most amazing part though. Because he didn't perform any service, Applewood didn't charge me anything! Yes that's right, they don't charge a service fee for just showing up. I have never encountered anything like this before and days afterward I am still pleasantly surprised at how honest and straightforward this company's policy is. You better believe that if I have any plumbing, heating or electrical problem again, Applewood will be who I call!

They put a camera into the sewer line and found that the line was broken and collapsed and that we had tree roots in the line. It took a couple of days to get a crew here to replace the line and they did all they could to get us back home as quickly as possible. The work was finished in one day and most of the clean up was done. I did have to call and remind them that our yard had some more clean up and fill in needed, and the street needed repaving. They were prompt in doing the rest of the work.

I had a room in the garage where the power had gone out. I was told there was an electrical fire in the Electrical box. That whoever put in the box to begin with use the wrong parts and that’s why I had an electrical fire. Also the entire box was illegal and he was surprised that I hadn’t had a garage fire. He quoted me $ 1200.00 to replace the complete box. I was also charged me a trip charge. I got a second opinion. There was only one bad breaker which didn’t make good contact - caused an arch between the breaker and the box - that shorted out the breaker. There had never been a fire in the box. That the only problem with the box was generic parts had been used not OEM parts. The box was completely legal. Replaced the breaker for 110.00 He didn’t charge me a trip charge.

We had sewage come up into our basement because the main line out of the house was clogged. We called Applewood around 6AM and they were able to come out 4 hours later - though they were an hour later than they had told us. The drain was cleaned and the gentleman who did the work was very professional. However, we were told that we should replace the piping from the house to the city main and the quote he gave us was outrageous. He also quoted a couple other plumbing jobs that he had noticed weren't done quite right, and those quotes were also really high! We ended up looking around and going with an excavating company for the outside job instead, but had we paid what Applewood quoted we'd have been had! The $400 that was just to get the pipe clean enough for the time being so that we could use our water again without filling the basement with sewage.

They did good work, but they actually charged us three times what someone else would have charged. We had them back when we wanted our furnace checked out, and once again, they told us that it was going to be a phenomenal amount, so we did not use them. We bought the water heater from them - that is the way they work. I doubt if they would have worked with us if we had bought the water heater and had them do only the installation. We would not go back to them.
