The technician came measured it to check the size and gives options in terms of performance. He doesn’t push his services and when I was interested he gave me an appointment and replaced the same. About 5 years ago I had a problem in the basement with a pipe and they tore up the ground and fixed it. They were very professional.

not good. cannot comment on quality of work since we never got beyond estimate stage
Description of Work: called for an estimate to repair a "leaky toilet" at one of our rental units. Repair man went to condo, and quoted $1000 because "the toilet needs to be "completely rebuilt". Couldn't believe it! paid him $75 to leave....then fixed the handle ourselves for $15. toilet is now perfect. This was clearly a scam to try to take advantage of the client. Word of advice, if you are a woman calling for repair work, be prepared to be taken advantage of financially!

$75

Response from Bell Home Solutions
This was an after-hours call, thus the reason the customer was charged a $75 service charge. The following services were all quoted on overtime rates. In addition to the service charge, the technician quoted $350.73 to repair the toilet, $311.55 to repair a very old, leaky two-handle shower valve, $100 for our membership program (which gave a 15% discount to the current work and double the labor warranty), and an additional $168.75 for time spent attempting to contact the home owner / landlord. He should NOT have asked for the $168.75, and I sincerely apologize that this happened. I don't believe the tech (who no longer works for Bell) tried to take advantage of anyone, and certainly this company and I don't allow such behavior. Almost 70% of our calls come from females. We greatly value their trust they place in us and will never do anything to jeopardize that. However, to be clear, the technician did not attempt to charge $1,000 to merely fix a leaking toilet. I have previously tried to contact the owner to explain the amounts quoted, and will make another attempt. Greg Palmer, President Bell Plumbing & Heating Company

While Bell's pricing is a bit on the high side, they are always reliable, and the work is top quality. I've used them a number of times; fixed pipe leak, replace garbage disposal, replace two water heaters and pipes, replace check value, replace shower valve. Each time the same result ... done right, done fast, with quality and professionalism.

I want to thank Greg and Paul for going the extra mile and locating this vintage seat for us. Ron Conner
Description of Work: We have a American Standard Water-Saver Tilche toilet that was manufactured in 1979. The toilet has a square front it is in excellent condition but it needed the seat replaced. We had tried to buy a replacement seat from many different places in Denver and online with no luck and had given up on finding a replacement seat and thought that the only solution was having a replacement seat made. I contacted Greg Palmer at Bell Plumbing, he had his parts manager Paul Ford search for a replacement, and he located a new original Church replacement seat at David Allen Plumbing in Yonkers New York.

Each time we needed a service call, Bell was extremely responsive. A leaking water heater was disastrous, but they had the new one up and running within 24 hours of our call. They were very clear about our options for equipment and warranties - no pressure, just good information. The service call for our a/c unit was a similar experience - very prompt and efficient work. One minor criticism: When the water heater was replaced, the technician told me that we did not need a tray underneath the water heater and that it was within building code for the unit to vent directly into the drain in the basement floor. Bell submitted building permit request and we were contacted a few days later to set up an inspection. Unfortunately, the building inspector informed us that the current code in Parker DOES require a pan, although he admitted that it would really not serve much purpose since a leaking water heater will eventually overflow the pan. It becomes an issue if/when we decide to sell the house. When I called Bell, they said modifying our setup to include the pan is covered in our warranty, but it would require uninstalling the water heater to do it. We opted not to since we have five years of warranty time in which to do that. Bell was completely willing to correct the error, we opted to wait. We will certainly hire them again when we have plumbing or heating & a/c issues.
Description of Work: On 9/6/2011, Bell assessed a leaking water heater and, after determining that it was unrepairable, then replaced it with a new water heater. ($1700) On 6/30/2011, Bell assessed a non-functioning A/C unit and determined that a part was defective and that dust and lint buildup had made it inefficient. They cleaned the unit thoroughly and replaced the part. ($450)

The tape didn't work. They told there was no warranty on the work, so they couldn't do anything. I called the manufacturer that made the tape, and they sent me a new roll of tape, which I put on myself.
Description of Work: He put heat tape on some pipes that were freezing in the house. Only a small portions was exposed to the elements. They told me they couldn't guarantee that the insulation would work under all conditions. I assumed that meant the pipes would still freeze if it was cold enough.

Bell Plumbing President called on Dec. 30 to inform me that we were overcharged and we would be refunded the amount of the overcharge, approximately $167.00. He was very upfront and apologetic about the issue. Also was concerned that no one had returned my call back in August. The message had apparently never reached him. Although it was more than 4 months between when I called to ask about the charges and when I received a call back I understand that mistakes happen, both with the overcharge and the missed return call. The important thing is that Bell Plumbing made the call and refunded the excess charge once they realized what had happened. I would use them again now that we've resolved this issue. Also, I think it's worth noting that the Angie's list process of reporting one's experience with a recommended company has worked well in this case. If I had not made my report on Angie's list Bell Plumbing might never have had an opportunity to rectify the issue. It was a win for all involved.
Description of Work: Our air conditioner was not cooling. We called Bell Plumbing & Heating for repair based on the Angie's List recommendation. The technician arrived promptly and made the repair. The bill was higher than I thought it should be so I called Bell to discuss. I was told that the person I needed to talk with was on vacation and would call me back the next week. No one ever called. I made a negative report on Angie's List after waiting about 8 weeks. In looking back I think it would have been reasonable for me to have placed another call to Bell and perhaps the issue would have been resolved much sooner.

I chose hiring a plumber to reconnect my new kitchen sink but the new sink drain path was 1? offset from the old drain. A tech from Bell gladly came out same day but due to their ?project? pricing structure, the estimate was almost $700. I, a 50 year old woman, did the work myself with a $7 of pipe and $20 of supply tubes from my local hardware guy. I must assume Bell is happy with their new business of consuming $49 estimates, and not actually interested in providing plumbing services customers. I have contacted Bell and after

I'm very sorry the customer felt our pricing was out of line, but the difference here is that we will always adhere to plumbing code, where the homeowner does not. The kitchen sink the customer purchased made the drain line plumbing coming out of the sink lower than where the line accesses the wall. It's at best a level run (without slope), and I fear the customer will have leakage problems shortly. The correct way to do the job is to cut into the wall and drain stack to create the correct amount of slope for the drain line. This would have taken considerably more time. I realize plumbing services aren't cheap, but if we take shortcuts and sacrifice our quality we're doing a greater disservice to our customers. We waived the $49 service charge and billed nothing to the customer. With respect to our "project" pricing, we switched from an hourly rate to up front pricing a year and a half ago as the vast majority of our customers preferred to know the price before we begin work instead of having the feeling of uncertainty inherent in hourly rate billing (i.e., the customer not being sure how long the job will take). From what we can tell, about 95% of our customers were supportive of this change, and our customer's desire for this type of billing is really the reason we changed. Our ownership preferred hourly rate billing (get paid for what you do), but we made the change for our customers. I hope I was able to explain this situation clearly. I really do regret the customer is unhappy and I hope we get another chance to better impress her. Greg Palmer, President Bell Plumbing & Heating Company

We located them through Angie’s List. I don’t remember the price charged by them. They came quickly and they did a very good job. They were really detailed. Their prices were reasonable and they did have a discount on Angie’s List. They did follow up. I called them and said that I appreciated the way their business treated us. I don’t know about their price compared to the other places. I would definitely use their services in the future too.

After I had another company out to look at the problem, it turns out that the vent for the heater needed a new gasget on the roof. It was all cracked and worn out and was letting melting snow drip down the vent onto the board. It took this other company less than 15 minutes to determine this. Why couldn't Bell Plumbing figure this out? And why did they keep blaming me and my wife for doing something we didn't do? Obviously, my experience with Bell Plumbing is very negative. I thought the technician who came out and his manager were very unprofessional, and very inexperienced. If they're going to troubleshoot a difficult problem, they should be sending out or at least questioning one of their more senior people. And this situation is very sad because my wife has been using them for over 20 years. After this 1 bad experience she nor I will ever user them again. Especially when they kept blaming us for the problem.
Description of Work: About 2 years ago we had Bell Plumbing install a new gas heater for our house and it worked great until about Feb of this year, 2011. When I checked the main panel, I saw that somehow water had dripped onto the main computer panel and shorted it out since the burn marks were quite obvious. So I called Bell Plumbing to try to fix the problem. The repairman that came out couldn't figure out where the water was coming from and thought it was coming from the AC pipes condensers. I told him that our AC was broken and we had not even used it this season. When I said this, he retorted that someone else in the house, probably my wife may have turned it on. I knew this probably wasn't true, but I called her on my cell phone while he was there and sure enough she said that she had not turned on the AC at all. I nicely suggested that maybe the water was coming from somewhere else and that he move on from thinking it was the AC condensers, but he wouldn't. He just kept saying the same thing and then just directly blaming my wife. I called his manager, and to my surprise, his manager was backing up his story and said it was the AC condenser and it would have to be fixed or replaced. Anyway, I had them replace the computer board that got fried, and of course, it was just about 1 or 2 months out of warranty and I had to pay for that. But to be fair, I suppose water damage to a circuit board shouldn't constitute a part failure on its own.

I called around to receive some price estimates for an annual check/service of our radiator. I had estimates that ranged from $85 to $135 to check pressures, thermostats, to make sure the radiators were heating, and that the pipes were filled. I specifically mentioned this to the gal who took the appointment. She said someone was available immediately (at 1130) and asked if it would be alright if they came in the next 15 minutes. I said sure. She scheduled me from 1130-1 pm all the same. The individual did not arrive until 117 pm to begin. He came in and I explained what I would like to have done and he looked at the living room radiators (3) and calculated a price to be $450.00. What a waste of my time. The experience was very similar to one we had with roto rooter, particularly with price. I mean he did not even look at the boiler!

I had already purchased the valve and it took them less than an hour to put it in. Total charge was $468 which I thought was extremely excessive for the service. I paid it as I needed to get the job done and finish my bathroom, but I think their pricing is outrageous. They were prompt and easy to schedule with and the quality seemed good, but before the plumber left he tried to get me to hire his friend as an odd jobs person. Very unprofessional. Probably will not use them again.

Dave came out and looked at the situation and told me that what he saw was just flux and was not a problem and would not lead to a problem - and did not need to be repaired or replaced. He was very helpful and informative, and was honest - he came out but did not perform any work and made no money on the call. I trust him to be knowledgeable and honest, so in the future when I do have a problem he is the plumber I will call.

Hot water heater was installed in the same location we had had hot water heaters for the past 20 years, but the Bell's heater failed almost immediately, was replaced and repaired with the same exact problem four different times over a period of a year. The last time they repaired it, they wrote on the repair bill that they would never do it again and that is was the location of the water heater that created the problem. I called them to talk about it and was told someone would call me back. I waited two months for a call and called again, but no one called the second or third times I called them. I gave up on them and quit calling for answers.

I am very sorry the customer is not satisfied with the water heater installed, but I really don't think the water heater is the issue, but the location of that water heater. We originally installed the heater in the customer’s rental property in February of 2005 and between that date and March of 2010 we replaced the heater twice (on warranty) and serviced it one other time. The problem we discovered each time is that the fresh air filter was plugged with lint from the nearby dryer. The dryer venting was not correctly connected, allowing excess lint to get sucked into the filter of the water heater. When fresh air is no longer able to get to the water heater, a glass vile (similar to that of a fire sprinkler system) breaks and disables the water heater to prevent gasses from unintentionally igniting inside and/or outside the heater (flammable vapors). This is a safety feature mandated in all water heaters sold after July 1, 2003, thus the reason the homeowner didn’t have the problem in previous years. The customer was actually fortunate that Rheem honored the replacement warranty twice as the problem really wasn’t with the water heater, but with the conditions of the room. This is why we told them future warranties would not be honored. Our service manager left voice mails with the owner on 8/3/10 @ 8:43 and again on 8/5/10 @ 9:17 to clarify this issue. I hope the customer (and all Angie’s List members) understands that Bell Plumbing & Heating Company and Rheem Water Heaters will stand behind all our warranties with respect to defective material or labor problems. This really was a problem with the conditions of the room, not the equipment or installation. Don’t get me wrong, most of us have our water heaters in the laundry room, but the dryer has to be correctly vented to the outside to prevent this problem. Please feel free to contact me directly if anyone has any questions regarding this experience. Greg C. Palmer, President, 303-757-5661.

Earlier this month we discovered a patch of mold in the basement wall, located directly beneath the upstairs toilet. My husband removed that section of wall and found a hairline crack in the drain pipe. He repaired it himself with a special glue made especially for such leaks. Because this was the third time we've found mold in the same location I was worried that his job would not hold up, so I called Bell Plumbing and Heating for a professional inspection. Bell does not charge a fee if no work is performed. I explained that a crack had been repaired already so they may not need to do anything, but they agreed to send someone anyway. Gary arrived the very next morning, spent 30 minutes checking things out and told me the repair job was good. His advice was to leave the wall open for a couple of weeks and check it periodically to make sure it stays dry. If a leak appears in the future he recommends replacing all of the pipe fittings (a costly job). He was professional, thorough, arrived on time and charged nothing!
Description of Work: The technician thoroughly inspected the drain pipe that leads to the toilet directly above. He spent 30 minutes on the job, making sure there was nothing leaking from the pipe when the toilet was flushed. My husband had just repaired a hairline crack in the pipe and the technician said the job was solid. Because he did not repair it himself, there was no charge for his services.

I'm very sorry our employee treated you poorly. When the 5/7-5/8 weekend hit 84 degrees, we got hammered with all the evaporation cooler start-ups all at once. Typically this doesn't happen and we're able to spread them out during the month. However, this is no excuse for poor customer service. We give extensive training on customer service to all our employees and pride ourselves on our high customer satisfaction (as evidenced by our "A" rating on Angie's List). It's our belief that even in the rare event we can't take care of a technical problem (like meeting your schedule), we handle it professionally and curiously. I can only apologize again for the bad experience and assure you that your report won't be ignored. I hope someday we get another chance to earn your business. Arrived on time, looked at work to be completed. Gave estimate and performed work .
Description of Work: In a small closet space, removed door to pull out washer. The request was to replace very old large knobs(faucet) that controlled hot and cold water. The knobs on this faucet were impossible to turn off when leaving for vacations etc. A single lever valve was requested as it is easier to turn off with arthritic hands. The hoses for this machine were coming off pipes near the floor making it impossible to change without pulling out the machine. New pipes were put in to be near the faucet turnoff at the top of the machine. New heavy duty hoses were also installed. A wonderful job, very neat and left the area clean after performing all the work. I have used this company before for new low toilet installations. Other companies would not go into the wall to replace this type of faucet.

It went well. Perhaps a bit pricey, but well worth it.
Description of Work: I had a new garbage disposal installed and a leak from upstairs bathroom investigated. The serviceman was on time and very professional. He listened carefully as I discussed the leak, and agreed with my assessment that it was likely the overflow drain in the tub (the gasket was shot). He fixed that, and the replced the disposal. Before he left, he did at no charge a walk through of my whole house to look at all fixtures. He offered me some tips on simple maintanence/repairs I could do myself (mineral buildup in ine tiolet to improve flow, slow drain in one bathroom) which I have since done. They worked like a charm! We discussed eventual replacement of the kitchen faucet when I have new countertops, and he again offered some advice on things to consider when replacing a countertop with the less expensive thin granite that I would never have known and could sve me a future headache.

Unfortunately, in this case, they couldn't help.
Description of Work: Bell Plumbing & Heating got back to be within 2 hours. Unfortunately, they don't service the area of my new home, however, they did provide a referral for a company they know does. I've used them for parts and knowledge for my current home many times in the past. They are an excellent source for older homes with parts that don't work with modern suburban/urban fittings which you can only find at the usual suspects in "big box" hardware stores. I will continue to use them as a source in future and would recommend them to anyone!

I had botched a do-it-yourself repair of a slow drain. Bell took care of it in 30 minutes.
Description of Work: Replace brocken bath sink drain pipe and clean adjoining drain pipes.

Response from Bell Home Solutions
Thanks for the positive report you posted last week. I'm very happy the technician was able to resolve your problem so quickly. I am sorry, however, that you felt the price was a little heavy. As you know we don't charge any trip charge or diagnostic fee and give the price to repair before we begin work. We're pretty confident our pricing is very competitive, and that's why we don't charge anything until the work is approved. An up-front pricing model is built on averages (the tech is reading the price out of his price book). It limits the risk the customer incurs as the dollar amount is fixed, so if the tech takes too long to repair, it doesn't cost the customer any additional money. But from time to time the job can be completed more quickly than average, making the invoice appear heavy. For decades we billed our customers on an hourly rate, but recently made the change to up-front pricing because of the demands of our customers (they didn't want to feel they had to watch the clock the whole time the tech was in their home). I hope future opportunities restore your faith in our pricing. We keep tabs on the market's pricing as best as we can, and find ourselves very much in the middle. To be truthful, I really don't want to be the cheapest firm in town - it's impossible to give our level of service and be the cheapest at the same time. But I do want all of our customers to feel they get value for what they pay. I've altered your account to place you on the Bell Value Rate for the next 12 months, entitling you to an additional 15% off future work and double our standard warranties. Hopefully the technician explained the BVR program to you when he presented the costs. I also want to remind you that there are coupons for future jobs attached to your invoice. I realize times aren't great right now and every dollar counts! Thanks for telling other Angies List members that you WOULD use us again. I hope the discounts above add to the value you see in Bell Plumbing & Heating Company. Sincerely, Bell Plumbing & Heating Company Greg C. Palmer, President
