Pricing - the price quoted to us by EHF (European Hardwood Floors) was approximately $500 less than any other quote we received. This alone would be great, but when the job took longer due to unforeseen circumstances (our old house is pretty cold and damp and the floors took forever to dry) they stuck to their original quote. They didn't charge us more even though the job took longer than anticipated, and they did all the work promised (and then some) for the exact amount they quoted.
Quality - a picture tells a thousand words, but since I can't post a picture, I will do my best to describe what an AMAZING job they did on our floor. We had two types of flooring to be dealt with - oak in the living and dining room, and Doug-fir in the bedrooms and hallway. During renovations, we removed walls, under which we found large areas of hardwood that had been cut out from the floor in the living and dining rooms, plus a ton of other areas that had been drilled into in order to run electrical from the basement to the main floor. EHF patched the areas that had been removed and matched the original floors so well that you truly cannot tell which portions of the floor are original and which were patched. Additionally, rather than just putting plugs (round pegs) in the holes from the electrical, they completely replaced all damaged planks - really going above and beyond and making things look beautiful. The Douglas-fir floors in the bedrooms and hallways were in equally bad shape shape - covered in paint in some areas, and covered with many layers of linoleum glue (we did our best to scrape most of it off, but we really couldn't get everything) in others. These floors now look absolutely BEAUTIFUL. They are my favorite floors in the house - they took the color so well, and EHF were able to remove all the paint and glue giving them a perfectly smooth finish.
Responsiveness - I never felt out of the loop about what was happening at our home, thanks to Boyan (our primary contact at EHF) who was constantly reaching out to us to provide updates on the house. If I had any questions, which I often did because this is our first time dealing with hardwood floors, a simple text to Boyan would garner a response usually in less than an hour!! He also made himself available by email, and I could reach him via a call too. EHF provided me with a lot of detail before hand as well. They were very clear and specific about what the job would entail, and Boyan answered approximately 500 of my questions during the original walk-through happily and with expertise. I also liked that he sent the quote the same day as he came to look at our house. Very communicative and quick to provide information!
Punctuality - On time every day, at our house every time they said they would be there. If anything did change, we were notified well in advance. As I mentioned above, the floors took longer to dry than anticipated thanks to our drafty old house, and even then we were well informed about when they would be back, how long it would it would take given the temperature of the house.
Professionalism - This category is really what sets EHF apart from all others in my mind. They are simply a JOY to work with. Boyan and his father own the company, and they are the ones who are at your house doing the work, which is great in and of itself. The fact that they are just about the nicest guys ever (and funny to boot) is an unexpected and added bonus to working with them. All of the employees that accompanied them were equally as kind, friendly, communicative and hardworking - people you want to have in your home. Everything was explained extremely well by Boyan up front - there were no surprises the entire time, nothing he "missed" during the initial walk through that ended up costing us more in the end, and he provided great suggestions and advice was also received with regard to color choices and future care of the floors. They know what they are doing, they are experts, and it shows in everything they do.
If you're still not sold, consider this: the home across the street from ours was sold about 2 months after we bought our house & the owners happened to be checking on renovations at their house when EHF were working at our house. These new owners came over to check out the floors at our house, and were so impressed that they hired EHF ON THE SPOT to do the floors in their home.
Again, I cannot recommend EHF highly enough. They are amazing to work with, and your floors will be more beautiful than you ever thought possible when they are through! Don't look any further - trust me, you want these people to work on your home!
Bojan and his father did an awesome job. They were able to provide some guidance on layout and was able to match the existing floor stain color very well.
My wife and mother-in-law love the new floor.
After removing the existing carpet and pad, they were concerned that the sub-floor needed to dry out, so they let the sub-floor dry overnight. Although it took a couple of days longer than expected I was happy that they did not rush through the work.
The floors were tricky (try getting black our of bevels some time) but they did a great job and addressed our concerns...water stains etc. I would recommend walking through with them before and during to inspect the floors and address any issues that you might have. What's great about them is that they want to keep you happy. They even added extra coats in the kitchen and hallways. They told us how to care for the floors and even what products to use.
I'd hire them again in a heartbeat!
They were super nice the father's a doll and the son is very friendly and they really take pride in their work which is rare. The father especially really seems to care and love the wood. He's an old-fashioned craftsman who takes pride in his work and the son is modern, current and good at customer service so you get the best of both worlds. Speak up, they'll listen!
When it comes to floors always hire people who do their own work. Other people hire cheap labor and the result is no different than if you were to go to home depot and hire the first people you see without supervising them (learned that the hard way with painting).
