Description of Work: Had a very minor repair needed - 5 mins max - was told $85 minimum to fix - ok - service guy arrives 3 hours early no warning so good thing we were home - makes fix in 5 mins and charges $135!! Not the $85 quoted - not cool!!! When asked if he could grease window track he fixed he just recommended a spray for us to buy - fully expected to pay $85 for something we could not do ourselves - but $135!! No! Felling very ripped off!!! Not sure why all the "A" ratings

The handyman was very pleasant/courteous to work with and kept in communication about delays to his arrival time. He completed both tasks in approximately 2 hours, which seemed a bit longer than I expected. Was well prepared and offered recommendations on several other minor to-do projects I have. Left work areas clean.

I didn't use them. They were one of the two 2 companies that gave me an estimate. The estimates were in the $1000.00 range. I just went and bought the materials and did the job myself. I met the guy. He gave me the quote and it looked fine to me. They came to my house on time so they were punctual. They were very responsive. They responded quickly when I contacted them. They were referred to me by the painting company that I had used. They were good on professionalism.
Description of Work: Handyman Matters came out and gave me an estimate on fixing the wood siding on the side of my house that was rotting near the bottom where water had gotten to it. They are a franchise.

I e-mailed Theresa to see if they worked in our area, and she replied in a day or two that they did. A few weeks later (delay my fault) I e-mailed her a list of the many tasks we needed done before our baby arrives in a couple months. I called to follow up after a couple of days, and she found my list very quickly. She looked over the list, estimated rough times for each item, and said that 2 guys should be able to do the work in about 4 hours, maybe 5, at $125/hr for the 2 guys. She scheduled an appointment. On the day of the work, Jacob showed up at 9:00 (when expected) and had a handwritten list of our tasks with him. I showed him where each thing needed to be done and he started getting ready to work on the kitchen faucet while I got out the supplies we had (paint, faucets, curtain rods, etc) from the garage. At 9:45 Kyle, the 2nd guy, arrived. They took some more time to figure out who would do what, and both actually started getting to work around 10:00. They were both very friendly and personable, but that was the problem - they were really chatty, which is not OK when I'm paying by the hour. They both had a fair amount of trouble disloging the old faucets in our 39-year old home, so I wasn't bothered (or surprised) that the faucets took longer to replace than Theresa had estimated. They needed an extra part for under the kitchen sink, so they made a list of the other things they needed at the hardware store. They did turn the cold water back on so my pregnant wife could flush the toilets, and explained that we shouldn't use the hot water because the kitchen sink might leak until they got the part they needed. While they were shopping and at lunch, I heard dripping under the kitchen sink, and realized that there was a lot of water pooling in the particle-board cabinet. I moved everything out of the cabinet and tried to find places for it to dry, mopped up, and put a bucket under the drip; they had put a paper cup from the recycling bin there before leaving, but it wasn't even under the drip (and we hadn't used the hot water). When they came back, they finished under the kitchen sink, but left the stuff out of the cabinet and the doors open to let it dry out. They installed the new smoke/CO detectors, hung one of the curtain rods we needed hung, installed the anchors for the window-blind cords, fixed the linen-closet door hinge, and replaced the patio spigot. At 3:00, Jacob said that they were already over the estimated time and had to get to another job. We reviewed his list, and he marked the things that were done and not done. He charged me for 2 guys for 5 hours (not for the hour they were at lunch), even though the 2nd guy arrived 45 minutes late. He also balked when I asked to see the receipt from the hardware store, saying "that's not customary," but he did let me see it and check the math (they had bought one item that wasn't for my job - he deducted the price of that item, but not the tax on it). I paid him, and they gathered up their stuff, as well as our old faucets and smoke detectors, and left. They almost left the extra curtain-rod bracket in their truck (pretty expensive piece), but Kyle remembered and returned it. They did clean up everywhere they had worked except under the kitchen sink. The tasks they did get done seem to have been done very well. What really frustrated me, though, was that they seemed really unfocused and disorganized as they were working, and they didn't get a lot of things done, so now I have to spend another day telecommuting and schedule another contractor to finish the list. I thought maybe I was being too h****** them since I'm a project manager and expect people to really be on task the whole time. My wife, who happened to be home as well that day, is much more laid back and patient than I am, and is also the daughter of a general contractor; she also thought they were really unfocused and wasted a lot of time. She also pointed out that the various other contractors we've had here have been very much on task they whole time they were here; is it just a coincidence that the other jobs were bid for a fixed amount, rather than by-the-hour? I don't know, but I won't be using this vendor again.
Description of Work: WHAT THEY DID: replace kitchen faucet, replace 2 bathroom faucets, replace outdoor spigot, re-hang banister, hang curtain rod, install anchors for window-blind cords, replace hinge screws on a linen closet, replace 4 old smoke detectors with new smoke/CO detectors. WHAT THEY DIDN'T DO: caulk 1 bathroom sink, add longer downspout to rain gutter, hang 2 other curtain rods, several small drywall repair/spackle areas and touch-up pain, prep and paint 1 window casing, replace weatherstripping on front door, anchor tall cabinets to walls, provide estimate for ceiling-fan installation in 3 rooms

We placed the initial order for the front door early summer of 2009. There was a wait time of 11 weeks for the door to arrive. In the mean time, we purchase custom hardware for the door: strap hinges and antique mortise lock. When the door arrived in September, Gregory picked up the hardware and arranged to have it installed in the door. There was some miss communication between HMM and the company installing the hardware; our initial install date was delayed by a month when we learned the wood-worker had not completed the work (we opted not to rush the install.) Gregory followed up approximately three weeks later to schedule an install date. The install took all day. We originally wanted to only replace the slab, but the install required a complete adjustment on the jamb as well. They worked from 9AM to approximately 8PM. Gregory left with some caveats that the door may settle over a month and said we should call him if we needed it adjusted. The door has been fine. When they were finished, the jamb still needed to be patched, sanded and painted. We opted to complete the work ourselves. The door looks fantastic.
Description of Work: Arranged purchase of new door based on our specifications. Installed custom door hardware. Installed new front door in home.

The install was done over two days. Esed Electrical installed the new wiring on the first day; they cut all the necessary holes and ran the wiring. I noticed the insulation on one wire had been scraped off presumably to test if it was "hot." Esed patch the insulation prior to covering the holes in the drywall. On the second day, Jacob from HMM installed the fan and patched the holes. We opted to finish the sanding an painting ourselves.
Description of Work: Installed ceiling fan in living room. Ran new electrical line to ceiling. Wired three way switch to control the unit.

The man who did the work was fine and it was done well (except for using two different color screws on my coat rack). He was nearly on time and was professional. My problem with the company is that they didn't get back to me with a quote for the balcony. After nearly two months, I finally emailed and asked if they planned to do it at all. They then sent an estimate, but would not have done it if I hadn't asked a second time.
Description of Work: He put up a couple of things on my wall and a door and checked the rubber seal around my front door. He took the information to allow the company to make a quote for plexiglass on my balcony.

He did exactly what he said he was going to do. We paid what he said we would pay, and he finished in the time frame he said he would finish. In addition, my mother passed away, and they gave me a nice deal.
Description of Work: My basement had open access to underneath the house and he enclosed the spaces with access doors. He did finish work that included molding and trim on my 200 square foot basement. It took them 10 days.

First handyman (Eric) arrived on time and took 1 hour to complete repair on toilet. Priced at $75 per hour plus parts seemed high average. My problem was the toilet started to have flushing problems 4 days later so the toilet was unusable. It took 24 hours to get a second handyman to return to complete the repair. Greg, the co-owner, was apologetic and said that the chain was too short on the new filler pipe so there was no seal. There was no charge for the second visit. I'm not sure if I would use their services again because Eric, the initial handyman, should have caught this problem. Greg, the co-owner, seemed highly competent.
Description of Work: He did plumbing repair on the toilet that would not stop flushing and was unusable. The handyman changed the filler pipe in toilet and replaced flush valve, tank vale, gasket and tank seal. Handyman arrived promptly, and took about 1 hour to complete job.
