Jose Mendez Tile

Jose came in and blew us away with his quote and professionalism. Very nice and courteous, and worked around our schedule and availability. In the end, we had two high-end bathrooms for bottom dollar price. We've used at least 5 other tilers in previous houses, and no one came close to providing the attention to detail for the price (or ever deserved a call back). There are too many contractors out there looking to take advantage of people...so if you don't yet have a reliable tiler, look no further.

This work went much more smoothly than I thought it would. Jose and his team were great!

I can not say enough good things about working with Jose! I met with 4 other tile guys, and none of them had the expertise and vision that Jose did. I had a general idea of what I wanted (black and white, subway tile octagon and dot flooring), but Jose had many suggestions that made a huge difference on how the final product looked. He even emailed me pics of a similar job he had completed. He purchased all the tiles, was very respectful of our home (he was incredibly sweet to our 2-year-old as well). He and his guys even patched and painted the walls for us and repainted the top wall in the standing shower, way above the call of duty. I think the job ended up being more challenging than originally anticipated as they shower had very thick concrete and was a nightmare to demo. He NEVER changed his price though, which 99% of other guys probably would have. I also wanted to do a hot mop, and he recommended a guy that did a great job at a fair price.He is really an artist and his pricing is very reasonable. Even the shower door guy was amazed at the work, saying most people don't do nearly as perfect a job. We plan on using him in the future for our kitchen and playroom. He is the best!

I'm always cautious about filing a report on a business that didn't actually work for me, but this is ANGIE'S LIST, and sharing honest information about trades is what it's all about, so for whatever it's worth, I feel obligated to report that after several back and forth calls with Jose to arrange a meeting to look at the masonry work I wanted done, he basically was a no-show. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I even made an additional call when I didn't hear back, and still no response. As I said, I don't like the idea of bad-mouthing a business, especially if it's a small business working hard to build good word-of-mouth, but, if your too busy, call! if the jobs sounds like it's too small, call! if it's too far for your old truck to drive, call!!It costs nothing and it's the professional thing to do.

Came on time to estimate job came on time to start . Had skills to complete job. Was friendly and willing to consider all options and ideas, completed job on time. Come back willingly to finish what was left out.

Went exactly as planned. Everything was explained and agreed to. Everything was done according to that plan and was clean and neat

The weekend I chose to have the tile installed had horrible weather. Moreover, the road to my house was closed due to the LA Marathon, yet Jose and his two helpers came and finished the job as promised. He's honest, responsive, and did a great job.

Both jobs came out perfect and I couldn't be happier. The bathroom was $450 and the exterior work $400.

I bought my own materials for about another $350. He provided labor. The kitchen floor came out perfect. He worked out some tricky height limitations imposed by a dishwasher. He cleaned up beautifully. We are very proud of our kitchen floor. A year later it still looks like he just finished it.

He and his worker were very neat. After several months, the grout seemed to be weeping and he came back and re-did.

We bought a house last winter and wanted to have some renovations done to it. Part of that involved tile work in the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room. We found Jose on Angie's list. We initially chose Jose based on his prices, responsiveness, and quality which he conveyed when he came out to give us an estimate. His prices were definitely competitive if not cheaper than a lot. In addition to the above work, he also removed all the waste from other construction work we were having done at the time for a very reasonable cost. This was very nice. His quality of installation was very good - you can tell he cares a lot about his work, which I liked. One issue I did have is that he was not familiar at the time with slate and sealant it required (neither were we). As a result we had to go through different sealants, some of which didn't work initially and in the end we had to pay more for sealant than expected. But in the end we were happy with the result and now anyone else who uses him for slate will not have the same problem. Our main bathroom in particular turned out great with the different glass tiles as well as ceramic for the floor. Jose was always responsive and generally on time. I highly recommend him to anyone getting tile work done, and hope to use him again when we redo our master bath.

When my original contractor became nightmarish, I fired him mid-job and called Jose for a quote on replacing the just "finished" tile in my bathroom. He came out to my house the very next morning. I have to admit, when he quoted me $250.00 for ripping out the current flooring, installing new floor tiles, and cleaning and sealing the disaster of a shower that was left from my previous tiler, I thought he would end up raising the price by quite a bit once he started ($250.00 seemed way too inexpensive for all of the work he would have to do, after all). Since my previous contractor tried to rip us off at every turn and did a hideous job on the floor, I was quite nervous. I read Jose's reviews, took a deep breath, prepared myself for a hefty price hike, and took a chance. Jose began work two days later (but offered to begin even earlier), and within 8 hours my bathroom had gone from night to day. Jose scrubbed off all of the plaster and grout left behind from my first contractor (which was quite a feat, believe me...it took him 3 hours), took out the old flooring, dry placed all of the tiles so we could make sure we liked the design before he placed them permanently, and finished setting them the same day. We have a small, not perfectly rectangular bathroom floor, so making it look even is a challenge...but Jose was up to the task. His results are absolutely beautiful, and I could not be more pleased. He returned today to grout the tile and will seal it several days from now. There were no surprises with Jose, and when he discussed the price with me today, it was still $250.00 (though he will be receiving a substantial tip). In addition to his high quality tiling, Jose is extremely polite, punctual, professional, and keeps a very clean work area. My only regret is not hiring him originally. Thank you, Jose!

I was very frustrated by the end of the job and so I purposely waited a few weeks to submit this report so I wouldn't speak out irrationally. At first, the job seemed to go ok and Jose was friendly, professional, and accommodating. But then it seemed like he and his men kept encountering problems--with the plumbing, with the electrical, with the demolition, with the installation--and I had to hear the complaints over and over, and often pay extra. After 12 days, I admit I was getting anxious for them to finish up and leave. However, I'm aware that the problems did not involve the actual laying down of tile, but everything else. So if I rate Jose only on tile installation, I'd say it was good. But the job included these other things, and overall, the experience was not good.

My front porch was tiled with 12 x 12 white ceramic tile. Soot from the air would make the tile really dirty after a week or so and there was a corner which had been poorly patched prior to my buying the house. The area that was patched would leak water (when wet) down into my garage and onto my car. I initially thought that the job was to remove the old tile, add a gutter or drain and retile. I called three tile vendors from Angie's list and got three quotes. Jose Mendez was on time, gave a very decent price on the quote. I wasn't sure because the three prices I got varied greatly. Jose was the most detailed and the one that I like the best and had the lowest price but his quote was just handwritten on a piece of legal paper. Then a few weeks later he called back to see if I had made up my mind and he had very accurate recollection of the needed work and reminded me that there was likely rot under the tile and I should get that fixed. I responded to hsi call - he was the only vendor to follow-up and hired him for the job. After one day's work he found that the porch was about 8 to 10 inches of concrete that was cracked and leaking and under that was severely rotted wood support (my garage). He re-estimated the cost. I didn't want to go over a certain dollar amount and he agreed with my adjustment. And got to work. The three day job ended up taking about 3 weeks or actually 10 days spread over 3 weeks. But his team were responsible, hard working and clean. They worked on a Saturday to catch-up/finish the job in a timely fashion. The finished work is beautiful. Jose suggested I go for a smaller 8 inch tile which made a big difference and I am extremely happy with the job and their work. The work they did replacing the rotted wood was beautifully done - more than I could have asked for. Jose was always reachable by phone and he would call me at least once a day to report on the project.

Very good quality work, very reasonable, very flexible and professional. Only concern is that I had to remind him to come back to seal the grout.

Estimate was approximately double what we ended up spending with another contractor.

His service was excellent. Several people gave me quotes and couldn't even figure out what the problem was. He figured it out and proposed a doable solution. He did an excellent job overall.
