Travis Hudson Daher makes numerous excuses and doesn't show up as scheduled. He did no work on our property after we waited 2 months to start. Very poor commuication. Would never use this company again.
Description of Work: Hired to do landscaping on our property but he didn't show up. Took almost $1200 of our money and won't refund it.

We appreciate your review and your continuous feedback. Please refer back to your invoices and signed contract for review, as these should clear up any confusion you might have on the services and fees billed. Even though, you might not agree with Straight Line Landscapes terms and conditions, that we have listed in our company's contract, we have to stay in compliance and treat every contract the same. Although, we try our best to make every client happy, we just cannot do so, by providing special treatment to certain contracts. Furthermore, we have provided you with all the tangible items that you were billed and paid for. Lastly, it is up to you on what you wish to do with the documents provided and we wish you the best of luck going forward.

In the fall, we had the company come out and perform an estimate. They were able to come up with a design that not only incorporated our wants and needs, but was great looking and very functional. They were very prompt on answering e-mails and phone calls in response to our questions. In February, we decided to schedule, and we were told it would take approximately 6 weeks before they could start work. This was expected upfront, as this is a busy season for them. But, we got a call a few days later saying they were available in just a few more days to start work! A highly experienced team was sent out to perform the work, and it took a total of 2 working days, excluding the days they were rained out. As opposed to dreading having to go out back to let the dog out, we now enjoy spending time in our backyard. We have been very happy with the quality of their work, and would recommend this company to others.
Description of Work: We started with an empty, dirt backyard, and had it landscaped complete with irrigation, grass, shrubs, trees, rocks and pavers.

I was please overall with the work that was done; we had a few minor issues along the way as you would with any job. The straight line crew that was on-site doing the work were very hardworking. Travis did a good job in supervising the crew and the entire process making sure the job went smooth and was completed on time. When we ran into a minor issue, Travis took care of right away. Today, grass and trees are doing good and the pavers look great. Great Job, Holly, Travis and crew!
Description of Work: Holly from Straight Line designed our overall landscape front & backyard and provided estimates for each phase. From the estimates we received from Straight Line, I thought they were a bit pricey. When we compared their estimates with the other bids, they were not the cheapest nor were they the most expensive either. They were a little slow at getting us scheduled, not sure why. However, once we were on the schedule and they showed up to do the job, the crew was here on-site for several days until they were finished. Why we chose to go with Straight Line, it was Holly; she did a fabulous job with the landscape design and listened and made recommendations based upon her experience and our vision. Her knowledge of plants, trees, flowers, what does well and what doesn't do so well here in Arizona, was by far the best. Items we had done in our first phase. Extended our patio with Pavers 900+ sqftsprinkling system and drip lines installedthree tree plantedSod 450+ sqft

We met with several designers and picked Straightline because of price and initiall friendliness of the salesman/designer. We were promised that they would be in and out within 3 weeks, max. We signed the contract in early February and were told there would be about a 3-week wait to get started. But were assured again that they would be done in less than three weeks. When they started the project, things progressed quickly, at first. They demo-ed the existing in one day. Made some progress on a retaining wall for the water feature and began laying brick for the fire pit. However, about a week into the project, with nothing but a dirt mess in the back yard, they started not showing up. We made calls to the sales guy who told us they would be there FOR SURE the next day, and they didn't show again and again. Then we were told they couldn't proceed because they were waiting on inspectors for the gas permits. When we checked utlity box for the permits, there was no evidence the permit existed. We finally contacted the turf subcontractor to at least get him going with the measurement since the rough in for the lawn was complete. When he showed up he was stunned. He asked how long our yard had looked like it did, and we told him over 3 weeks. He was floored. He said he had not seen anything like it from this company before. He took the measurements and told us he only needed a few days notice to get us on the schedule for installation once the area was properly prepped. It was sometime around here we heard that Straightline was doing a TLC DIY show and that's why all resources had been pulled from our job. So we contacted them and told them we were really getting tired of the waiting and would like to see some progress. We were then told that there was a back order on the tile for the water feature. Even though, there were six boxes of tile on our back porch that had been there for over a week. More delays...more excuses. In the end they only used the original six boxes of tile because we had discussed with the designer that the water feature looked too tall and he suggested cutting it down, hence, no need for the extra tile. This decision was made in the second week. In MAY (remember we signed the contract in February) they FINALLY finished the project. By August 85% the plants were dead (probably because they planted them in late May and didn't check the irrigation system). In October we got a notice from the City of Phoenix that our electrical permit would expire if it was not finalized within the next 30 days. We contacted Straightline and asked and quot;what's upand quot; they insisted there were no outstanding permits, but could not provide a final inspection report. After two more trips to our house by a straightline worker and two more visits from the inspector, we finally got approval. The yard looks and quot;okand quot; but after all the hassle, mess, expense and runaround, I would not recommend them.
Description of Work: Re-design of our existing backyard. Design included a water feature, paver patio areas, large gas fire pit, some plants, and artificial turf provided through a sub-contractor recommended by Straightline

Thank you for your feedback on your project. We appreciate when our customers take the time to provide us with extensive comments so we can continue to improve our services. That being said I would like to address some of the points mentioned in your review. It seems the majority of your disappointment with the project was the length of time it took to complete. The first major delay we encountered was directly related to the approval of the gas line permit. Because of the amount of gas required to operate your fire/water feature a request for a special permit was required. We are at the mercy of the city when it comes to them approving our requests for permits. Sometimes the request is processed instantly, other times it takes weeks. It is much like the weather, it is simply out of our control. The other major factor that contributed to the delay in completion was the changes in the design of the project. The custom made pots for the water/fire feature were originally intended to have an unfinished look, this was later changed to a powder-coated finish(which was done at no charge to the customer). As a result the construction of this feature had to be halted while the pots were getting refinished. As you mentioned, the height of the water/fire feature also changed during construction (again, at no cost) as we waited for enough material to complete the job that was originally designed and approved. Without these significant changes in the design the completion of your project would have occurred in a much more timely manner. It is unfortunate to hear that some of your plants didn’t survive. We would have gladly replaced them within the warranty period, for no-charge, had we been advised of the situation. I can assure you that the irrigation system was functioning properly at the time we completed the project. Furthermore, it is necessary to adjust the watering frequency and duration during the high heat of the summer months. We are disappointed that we were not able to surpass your expectations regarding the completion of your project. There were several items that contributed to the delays in your project and we tried to do the best we could considering the circumstances. The DIY Network episodes of Indoors Out, which premier on May 24th and May 31st, actually had nothing to do with the completion of your project. It appears you may have been misinformed by the salesman you worked with, who is no longer representing Straight Line Landscape. And it might be worth mentioning that we did install pavers on the side of the property, as well as additional glass in the firepit, at no additional charge. Should you ever have a need for future work to be completed we would enjoy the opportunity to earn your business back. Thanks again for providing us with this feedback as it is very valuable to us. All the best. ~Straight Line Landscape.

We interviewed eight landscape firms at a recent home show. This list was narrowed to three through a combination of the impression made by the people at the show and reference to Angie’s List. Straight Line Landscape made the list in spite of one poor report on Angie’s list because the designer at the show (Holly) gave us some good suggestions on how to deal with our drainage issues and seemed sincere in her willingness to do whatever it would take to leave us satisfied with the firm’s work. The decision turned out to be difficult to make. Each of the three firms gave good presentations when they visited our home. Each suggested a slightly different way to accomplish better drainage away from the home but each sounded like it would work. The pricing by the three firms was, after adjustment for differences in drainage solutions, quite similar. We asked Holly to explain the poor performance report on Angie’s list which she did without attempting to castigate the customer and place all the blame on that individual. The firm also had posted a lengthy response to the disgruntled customer on Angie’s list. Nevertheless, we remained concerned. The final decision came down to; i) Holly gave us many choices in paver stone and helped us pick a good match for our house’s facade when the other two just said they would match the facade, ii) her solution for the front drainage issue was the most esthetically pleasing and iii) from start to finish she made us fee like our total satisfaction was the only outcome she would accept. Our choice turned out to be a good one. The job was done quickly and efficiently and to a high standard. The workers checked with us often to make sure that what they were doing was satisfactory to us. The day after completion Holly returned, did a walk around with us and collected the final check. I will use this firm for any more major landscaping projects that come up.
Description of Work: Install pavers in existing crushed stone circular driveway, grade area near home, install drain under driveway and line graded area from home to street with river rock. Additionally, grade two areas in rear from patio to drain holes in pool enclosure wall. Plant new mesquite tree where one had died.

Didn't go well at all. We had questions and had trouble gettin in touch with the foreman or the salesperson and the workers couldn't seem to get a hold of them either. Finally had to lock the gates to get them to come to talk to us (about the failure to remove old gravel). They did come when planned but initial work took a couple of days longer than planned. However, the water feature was not designed properly and it took them weeks to get that installed and included closing our pool over the 4th of July weekend when we had told them we wanted the pool due to grandkids coming to town. In addition, they substituted smaller pots for the water feature (without consultation or fee reduction) and the redesign made the pot platforms larger. These changes make the feature look out of proportion. The water also doesn't drain from the feature so it gets stagnant. A bench and the workmanship on the water feature stands (rock cladding) was good. Didn't like the way they completed the work and payment. They provided you with a plan, with prices for different items but never provided a completed invoice of what they actually provided. Because of this, it minimizes the legal recourse if they and quot;substituteand quot; materials because of the and quot;planand quot; caveats.
Description of Work: Yard conture, new gravel, plants, trees, fire pit, pool water feature, lighting, drip system, horseshoe/bottci pit. Substituted items without consultation and didn't involve homeowner is decisions. For example provided smaller pots than ordered, had to confront to pick gravel color and then color was not as shown. Was not asked about what type of lights (installed cheap incadescent, would have preferred LED, nor the placement. Provided a disfunctional pool water feature. Tried to correct but subcontractor couldn't communicate except to say "this is what Straightline want" and then couldn't get anyone from straightline to respond to calls. Feature is set up where it doesn't drain and holds water and bypasses pool cleaning system so you have to manually (every night) turn on or off water feature or pool cleaner otherwise pool doesn't get cleaned or water feature gets stagnat with algae. When confronted, they did change some valves around but still doesn't solve the "manual" problem or the stagnant water problem. Did nott provide what was contracted until confronted. For example, plan called for a 5 gal lime tree, they installed a 1 gal orange tree. Luckily I caught it and they did replace it.. Also horsepit was two feet less in width and 8 feet less in length than drawn and therefore couldn't be used for horseshoes. Also, they placed a light right at the end of the pit, in the path of any horseshoes thrown. Did correct after confronted. However pit was not seperated from rock yard and now the pit is not as defined. In the process of fixing this on my own. Tried to shortcut work, irrigation system didn't work as planned and advised. For example, was supposed to remove old rock but was caught applying new rock over old. Three months after they had completed work, when checking why old previous trees were looking bad and not budding properly, discovered that irrigation system was put in as drawn and trees were not on the circuit I was told. In addition, part of the system was leaking from where they had accidently installed a light into the system. Took a couple of weeks to finally get someone out, then a couple of more weeks for them to correct the system. However, lost a Brazilian pepper tree as a result of the irrigation issues. They said it wasn't their fault. Plant placement and selection was questionable. For example, a lot of plants died within the first few months (they replaced the ones that died within 90 days), one plant that grows extensively was placed right next to the pool and grows into the pool. Wanted LOW MAINTENANCE yet they installed numerous vines that we later discovered need to be channeled, placed and worked with continually to get planned coverage.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your project. We appreciate it when our customers take the time to provide us with their thoughts in order to continue to improve upon our services. I would like to address some of the issues you’ve mentioned in the review to clear up any confusion. Readers of this review should be aware that all of the issues mentioned below were addressed immediately and prior to final payment. In your conclusion you reference the Plan that we provide you with, which we use as a construction document for the job. The Plan specifies the exact amount and type of each material to be installed on your job. The pots that were installed on the job were 1 ¾” smaller than the pots that were originally called for in the design. Upon placing the order for the original pots we were notified that they were not available. Our designer addressed this issue and offered to get a larger pot, wait for the original pots to be produced or to go with a smaller pot. Since the smaller pots were only 1 ¾” smaller it was decided that we would install those pots. The Plan also specifies 58 tons of ¾” desert brown granite, which was also delivered and installed, only after your discussion with our designer. Furthermore the Plan also specifies the type of lights to be installed as well as their respective location. We carry a full line of LED lighting equipment which we provide as an option to all of our customers. What adds to our confusion regarding your dissatisfaction with the lights is the fact that a change order was placed on 7/15 for (2) additional lights of the same type. I am sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the water feature that we built and installed. One of our masons, not a subcontractor, constructed the water feature based on the specifications laid out on the Plan. We had offered/recommended a separate pump for the water feature to eliminate the problems you’ve mentioned regarding drainage and stagnant water. Ultimately that option was refused and the only way to make the feature operational was to tie it in to the existing pool pump. The feature was built in as the “return” to your pools cleaning system so you could clean the pool and run the feature simultaneously. Without the second pump the feature will not function how you expect it to. The construction of the feature would not require the pool to be shut down for any reason that I’m aware of. After reviewing the Plan it appears that we installed 77 plants and trees on the property. The 15 gallon orange tree that is being referenced was the only tree that was mistaken/mis-pulled at the nursery at the time we arrived to pick them up. The 15 gallon LIME tree that was called for on the plan was delivered and planted as specified. We warranty all of our plants for 90 days and offer free replacement as a means to guarantee our customers will be satisfied with their new plantings. Planting young plant life in late June can be stressful to shrubs and trees and ultimately some plants may perish. Our warranty states that we will replace those plants at no cost to our customers, as you’ve stated in your review. Plants, and especially vines, have a tendency to grow and will initially need to be shaped and directed into the path of growth. Obviously we are disappointed to hear that you are not pleased with the plant selection and placement. We would have been more than happy to address that at the time of installation or within the warranty period. We don’t have a record of any Service Orders being placed for any of the issues you’ve mentioned in the review. The horseshoe pit that you reference was designed as a mixed use bocce ball/horseshoe pit that was designed on the Plan to be 44’ x 6’. The pit that was installed meets those measurements. Additionally it would have been no problem at all to have a border put around the court to maintain separation between the court and the surrounding granite. The payment terms, and billing breakdown, are clearly stated in the contract that is signed prior to construction. The terms of the contract reflect those that Contractors in our industry offer and are clearly stated on the contract as well. Itemized invoices are made available prior to any payments and will reflect the items that were installed and called for based on the Plan. We do a thorough walk-through inspection with our customers at the end of every installation in order to make sure our customers are completely happy with the service and work that we provide for them. From what we can recall there were no issues mentioned at the time of the walk-through on this project. It is unfortunate that we could not meet your level of satisfaction with this job. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to improve in all areas of our business. Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us. We are available M-F 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM and any time via email at info@straightlineaz.com

I purchased a bank-owned property that had a very neglected landscape. I needed to overhaul the entire landscape to make it something that would fit my needs for now and for the future. I met the Straight Line team at a home and garden show, and was impressed by the photos of their work and how personable they were. I had several companies bid on my project, but Straight Line was the only company that asked a LOT of questions about me and my needs for the backyard space, my lifestyle, and they even wanted to come inside the house to see what my style was like inside to try to carry these themes outside. I was upfront with everyone about my budget, but Straight Line was the only company that produced a comprehensive plan ON BUDGET. Their pricing was very reasonable compared to the others, especially since they were doing a complete overhaul of my landscape, including irrigation and lighting. When they shared their plan with me, they had pictures of each plant so that I knew what to expect. They didn't just tell me to go to a nursery or to do my own research to see what the plants will look like. Their plan included a few common Arizona desert plants, but also some unique plants to fit the look I was going for. Also, I travel extensively, so I needed to schedule in advance the days they would be at my house. They accommodated my schedule, their crew showed up on time and they finished the whole project in 4 days. The only reason it took 4 vs 3 days is because it started raining early on the 3rd day. Travis, the owner, came to my house each day, to ensure everything was ok. When it was time to plant, he was there to place each plant according to the plan, and only had to make a few adjustments. While they were working on my project, the crew worked tirelessly, they cleaned up at the end of each day, and ensured quality in each step of the project. When it was all done, my designer walked through everything with me and compared it to the plan, and it was SPOT ON. Honestly, I was apprehensive that Straight Line was "overpromising" me when they said they would start work and be completed on certain days, and that they would stay on budget. I know way too many horror stories from others who have major projects happen at their home that never get finished on time, are way over budget, or just are not right. With Straight Line, I can honestly say that they did what they said they would do, they did not go over budget, they had a very creative and beautiful design and I highly recommend them. Now, I come home to a very beautiful and peaceful backyard, just like I envisioned. I will be doing more work next year to overhaul the front of my house and I will only use Straight Line. When you use them, ask for Holly for your designer, she is fantastic.

My yard was out of control. A true jungle. Since we travel alot, I needed a self maintaining yard that would be a welcome mat, not a "oh no". I requested estimates from 5 companies. I received 4 return calls and ended up with 3 estimates. All the estimates were in the same general price range. The time to do the job ranged from 4-6 weeks to 4 days. Why did I choose this company? Karen (the sales rep) return calls. She's right there making sure all phases of the project goes better than you can expect. They give you a fair estimate. They work out the design with you so you get exactly what you want. They finished before they had promised. 2 1/2 days. They do extra things to make it "perfect". The job was huge. My entire yard was taken out and replaced in 2 1/2 days. They did not come too early and did not stay late. They have a crew of 11 hard working men and a supervisor on site at all times. Karen came to the site everyday to make sure I was getting what I wanted. They follow through with their promises. What's that worth? I have a yard that is picture perfect....lots of color....low maintenance....better than I thought. Call Karen...you will be impressed with her knowledge and follow through. You will not be sorry. Their work is incredible.
Description of Work: Demolition of old yard trees, bushes and plants. Installation of drip irrigation system. Installation of path and spot lights. Removal of inground spa. Removal of yard rocks. Installation of new trees, plants, rocks. Installation of paver path.
