This will be in two parts. The first part is an email that I sent to Handyman Connection. I'll talk about how they "fixed" the problem later. "I was looking on Angie's List for a handyman and I saw that your company was very highly rated, so I called just after business hours on Friday, March 1st and left a message. I received a call back Monday morning at 8:30am. I told the person that I needed to get two exhaust fans installed on Friday since I would have a house guest that wouldn't mind being at the house while I was away at work. She said no problem. The handyman got here about 8:15 Friday, March 8th. He looked at everything and told me that he couldn't do both because he was scheduled elsewhere. He told me that he could get one done and possibly start the other and it would cost me $525. I agreed to the price because I needed it done and your company is so highly reviewed on Angie's list. When I gave him the go ahead, I left for work around 9:00. I got home about 12:15 and he was gone to his next appointment. When I got home, there was a pile of stuff in my carport that I went ahead and cleaned up. After that, I went in and looked around. I wasn't very happy that the one fan he started on wasn't done as he said it would be. I then noticed a strange extension cord going out my back door. When I went outside, I found his chop saw and some leftover boards. These boards had rusty nails in them sticking up into the air. This is right outside a door that has a doggie door in it. This is a door that my dog uses all day long. This upset me greatly. He would have been going in and out of it the entire time the guy was out there working....right outside the doggie door. I called him immediately and told him what I found and he came back to get his saw and clean up. There was nothing to clean up because I had to clean that up before my dog got a rusty nail through his foot or tracked in all kinds of saw dust. He apologized, but I just can NOT imagine ever working right outside a doggie door, and especially leaving something that could seriously injure someone's pet. Fast forward to Monday morning. Since I was told the work would need to be finished on Monday, I talked to my boss and luckily he allowed me to work from home for the morning. The handyman showed up around 10:00, which is what we agreed on. He got to work and finished a little after 4:00 pm. He told me that is shouldn't take more than a couple hours per fan. My boss is not exactly pleased with me being out of the office for that long even if I am able to work. I had forgotten to get a new double light switch cover, so I told the handyman to leave it as is and I will get one and put it on. I did that the next night. I went to install the cover and I saw that the new box that was just installed is not level or flush with the wall. This means the cover can't be installed. I know there is a one year warranty, so I would like someone to come and fix it. I would like that to happen when it is convenient for me (after hours from my job). I would not like it to be the same person if that is an option. His name is ****** (left out for his privacy). I have pictures of the board with nails right outside the doggie door and of the unlevel/unflush outlet box if you need them. I should finish by saying the handyman was very personable and I really thought based on the quick discussions we had that he was someone I could trust. When I pay a professional, I expect results better than I could do myself, otherwise I would do it myself. I do not feel like that's what happened here. Please let me know what you can do for us as soon as possible." Part 2: After I sent that short story, the company was very responsive and gave me a portion of my money back and some coupons to use in the future for a discount. They also sent a different handyman out to fix the switch box to be level and flush. He worked on it for about an hour and left. It still wasn't fixed, but at this point, I decided that it would be better to do it myself. I had to re-run electrical and completely change out the box, but it is now flush and level and everything works great. I have a co-worker that needs exhaust fans installed and he asked me for a recommendation. I told him that he should stay as far away from Handyman Connection as possible.
Description of Work: I have an original 1957 home and we needed exhaust fans installed in the two bathrooms. There were none before, so this required some demo (to create a hole for the fans), adding new ducting in the attic (the exhaust ports had already been installed in our eaves by me), running new electrical lines from the existing bathroom circuits and hooking it all back up to the new switches.

Response from Handyman Connection - Phoenix
I am very sorry the member had a bad experience with Handyman Connection. We complete over 3,000 jobs a year and on rare occasions things can go wrong. When this happens we do our best to fix the problems quickly and professionally. In this case we sent another craftsman out at a time chosen by the member, and discounted the price to compensate the member for their inconvenience. I am a little confused about what happened after that. To the best of my knowledge the second craftsman completed the work and the member did sign off that they were happy. We even made a follow up call to the member (left a mesage) to make sure the work as completed to their satisfaction. That was our last contact until this posting. Handyman Connection provides a one year written guarantee on all of our work. If there were still issues we would have happily fixed them at no additional cost.

We moved into our house a few months ago and there were a number of things that were unfinished or needed repair, and we wanted to get rid of doggie door change out some light switches, etc.. We got an appointment the day after we called. Jim was our handyman. We discussed what needed to be done, he made out a list / invoice, got us a price, and discussed what would be involved. He started immediately, and the work was finished within a few days. He was very professional, very pleasant and easy to work with, and we kept in communication throughout the work. He did a nice job on all of the work.

Kevin was always on time from the estimate to the actual day of work. The work was outstanding and he was totally committed to making sure that he was communicating with me as "surprises" arrived and gave me the option to approve or disapprove. He did not take any short-cuts that may have had a negative impact over time. I asked him to look at several other "projects" that I might be considering. One the first he was able to give me a firm quote. On the second he wanted to get more technical information so that his quote would be accurate. Would I recommend him again? Absolutely YES,
Description of Work: Multiple tasks. Enlarged a cabinet to accommodate a refrigerator; replaced a leaking single drink dispenser for an ROI; installed a bathroom sink drain assembly; repaired/removed and replaced dry wall and the underlying supporting structure for an elevated platform in the garage for a water softener that had failed; and finally designed and installed a "drainage" system for the water heater and the soft water unit that were installed on the elevated platform. elevated platform providing an outside

The repairman they sent was Kevin, who is one of their tile specialists. He called the day before to confirm the time. Kevin came prepared to do the job, which was great, because my husband and I thought the price was reasonable and I already had the replacement tiles. It took him just a few hours to remove the shelf and surround tiles, replace the tiles and grout. He did a great job! He also left the bathroom neat when he left.

It went great! Dave came out and assessed the problems and gave his estimate. He was very friendly and easy to work with. I'm selling the condo so we were able to discuss and determine the work that was necessary. He left me the estimate and I then contacted Handyman Connection to schedule the appointment. Dave came out a week later and did a really good job. The doors are all painted and hung and look great. He had to do some creative work on the sliding glass door because the missing lock is no longer manufactured. But it now locks like a normal door (I used a stick for 15 years). The bathroom fan lives again. I'm very pleased! Thanks Dave!
Description of Work: Dave trimmed, painted and hung 2 bedroom doors, a bathroom door and 2 closet doors that were damaged by a renter. He also repaired the ceiling fan in the bathroom and replaced a damaged section of wood under the kitchen sink. Also put a lock on the sliding glass door.

Handyman was timely, did a good job, had all necessary tools, and cleaned up before he left. I have no complaints about the work performed. It only dawned on me later that I was quoted $245 - which entitled me to a $25 discount, rather than a $50 discount if the quote had been $5 higher at $250. Home Depot charges $99 per toilet, so I should have used their installer. Oh well, lesson learned. I feel that the price was jacked up as high as it could go ... with the minimum discount, beware.

One difference between Handyman Connection and Home Depot is that Handyman Connection offers a free in home written estimate, while Home Depot quotes a "basic installation" price over the phone. The actual Home Depot price is subject to change once they look at the job. The Handyman Connection price will not change.

Our previous water heater leaked into the back end of our house. Baseboards were affected, along with a good portion of the water heater stand in the garage. Our dryer vent was damaged when it was removed by the water-cleanup people (that was a different company). Dave from Handyman Connection came out to take a look at all affected areas and provide us with an estimate. He was also the one who did all of the work. He was a very diligent worker, and very easy to talk to. He bought all of the necessary materials (with cash we supplied), and even used some materials that he had leftover from previous jobs, at no extra cost to us. He was on-time for both days of the job, and the second day only took a few hours, so our estimate was revised and came in at a much lower-than-quoted price. I am very happy with the completed work!

I'm sorry the member felt our price was too high. As always, Handyman Connection offered a free in home estimate, and the member was under no obligation to have the work done. Typically, we are not the lowest priced contractor, however, when considering quality of work, profesionalism, and responsiveness, we beleive we do offer a great value to our customers. This member has used our service before, and I hope they will consider using us in the future.
