Description of Work: Replaced all windows and an exterior garden door. Up front work was extensive, however, job was not performed as requested. Windows and door are of good quality but I would not recommend using their trim service. Measurements were not correct and finish work was not to performed to finish quality. I had to hire another contractor to come in and deal with unsightly gaps in drywall, nails, etc. Overall, I was disappointed especially in relation to the cost and amount of upfront work.

Initial call to company was handled professionally and personably. Walk through of project with estimator was on time and reassuring. He gave helpful suggestions, seemed very knowledgable. Estimate was provided promptly. The only reason Neighbor's didn't win the bid is because another equally rated company beat their labor price for a total job cost to include materials of $12405 vs $14816.
Description of Work: Provided an estimate to replace 8 windows, one garden window and one slider in a 33-year-old home.

We asked for a quote to replace windows and doors in our home. Neighbors did provide quotes, however they were not very good at helping us understand our options or in our final decisions. They quote their work in separate categories. Materials and labor each quoted separately with several different options within each quote. Maybe if we sold windows and doors for a living we could have navigated these more easily, but essentially what they did was take what should have been a simple proposition and made it very complex. Some honest advice about what would be appropriate would have helped them garner our business. I get the impression they are unwilling to consult as a subject matter expert. I have no need or desire to become a window and door professional, that is what I am hiring a contractor for. Unfortunately I believe I have wasted enough time and I am moving on to another contractor. After our initial attempt at doing business failed and I posted my first review, Neighbors made a concerted effort to meet our needs. They were courteous and professional and truly tried to work with us. Unfortunately we could not get there. Product price and available style were just not where we needed them to be. I commend Neighbors for the second effort at garnering our business.

Response from Neighbors Windows and Doors
Different customers have different expectations of the sales process...some want information overload, others want all the decisions made for them. It's not always easy to decipher which category each customer falls into, so we attempt to strike a happy medium by providing pricing and specification that is detailed but can be summed up very quickly. We find that most customers are really surprised by how many decisions need to be made for a typical window and door replacement. From style and color, to glass type, interior trim, interior trim finish, hardware style...it can get daunting considering in many houses those decisions can be different for several rooms or levels of the house. We try our best to provide advice and multiple options for every situation, but when it comes down to it the customer has to make the choice as it's their house and they have to live with it. Thankfully in this case a quick phone call to the customer has put the process back on track. They had nothing but good things to say about our sales staff and were more than happy to pick up the process where it left off. We're going through a few different variations in specification to find the right combination of product that works in the allotted budget and provides the features they require.

I'm happy with the doors and the windows that Neighbors installed. Their estimate tallied with others' and I felt comfortable with having them do the work. The price was pretty high, but so were estimates by others. I did ask for an estimate on two other windows, and that estimate was way higher than a competitor's--about double. So I didn't go with Neighbors for those windows. What Neighbors installed are a great improvement on the doors and windows I had in an older home (from the 1950s) and will do well toward meeting energy efficiency improvement requirements for the state rebate program.

Every step of the process, from my first telephone conversation up through the final inspection and payment, went perfectly! It sounds "over the top", but Neighbors Windows and Doors could give lessons in "Secrets of Contracting Company Success", they are that good. The initial inspection was scheduled promptly, and the estimator patiently answered my questions about the product, installation, scheduling, and a dozen other details. He emailed a comprehensive cost estimate just a couple of days after his inspection, and responded promptly when I contacted him with follow-up questions about the bid. The estimator came back out to re-measure all the windows a second time before placing the order with the local manufacturer, to ensure proper fit in each opening. Once we committed to the project and paid a deposit, I asked for the work to be scheduled for a particular week several months in advance in order to accommodate my family's needs, and Neighbors did this readily. I received a follow-up call several days in advance to confirm the start time, and to give me an idea what to expect as the work progressed (i.e. removing window coverings, making room in the driveway for them to park their equipment trailer, etc.) The installation crew arrived promptly as scheduled, introduced themselves, and walked through the house with me to ensure that everything was ready for the project to begin. It was immediately apparent that the 3-man crew was experienced, and really care about the quality of their work. They were fast, friendly, tidy, and really seemed to enjoy working together as a team. When they encountered a couple of snags in the installation of several windows, due to dry-rot in the original framing that was not visible until the old windows came out, they quickly repaired the damaged framing and continued with the installation instead of making a production out of it. I believe any other contractor would have called for a change order and extra payment, but Neighbors just handled it and moved along. The project was scheduled to take 3 days, and the crew worked an extra-long second day to make sure they would finish on time the following day, which they did. The crew very carefully cleaned up after themselves, even running a magnet over the driveway to make sure no unseen nails were left behind. The company's operations manager stopped by for an inspection, and when he noticed a minor issue with some of the hardware used during manufacture--something I would not even have noticed--he had a technician come out to correct the problem without making a fuss. The lead installer walked through the house with me, giving tips on operating and maintaining the new windows which work quite differently from the clunky old wood windows the house was built with. I could continue, but hopefully I've highlighted enough particulars to help show how Neighbors Windows and Doors conducts its business. Many companies pay lip service to the concept of "We value your business", but these guys have it down. Whether your needs are for the replacement or installation of just one door or window, or (like mine) a whole-house retrofit, look no further than Neighbors Windows and Doors. I seriously cannot say enough good things about this company.

Description of Work: I called for an estimate to replace a window. In discussing the situation with Steve, he told me I had another, cheaper, option rather than replacing the whole window. He referred me to another company, provided me both the phone number and person to speak with. That company is coming for an estimate. I appreciated Steve's integrity and customer service

After I contacted them, response was prompt. Estimate was provided at no charge. They arrived to do the installation at the date/time promised. Installation was quick and minimally disruptive to normal household operations. They finished the same day. Fit, finish, and conformation to expectations was superb.
Description of Work: They changed out 9 window panes on the front of my house, replacing 30-year old windows with new, upgraded e-efficient glass and installing 4 openable windows in place of windows that did not open originally. They were prompt, responsive, flexible and completely professional. Attention paid to installation of interior molding was superb, so that the integrity of the interior appearance was excellent. I highly recommend their services.

I would give this company an A+. I simply can't say enough about the quality of these vinyl windows and the way everything is integrated. I was even more astonished to see that the exterior cedar trim was constructed with biscuit joints! I opted for the triple pane windows because I live on a corner adjacent to a busy street and only one block away from the Glenn Highway. The house is now virtually soundproof! I wish I had done the last 3 windows (bedrooms) of the house too! Actually, I wish I had replaced these windows when I moved in 3 years ago!! In case you don't know, Neighbors Windows and Doors is an Alaskan owned and operated business. The windows are constructed to your specifications by Capitol Glass right here in Anchorage. While I was comparison shopping prior to ordering from Neighbors, I had a salesman in a "box" store tell me these products were made "outside". Go check these businesses out on the web if you want additional information. Bottom Line: I LOVE THESE WINDOWS AND MY NEW FRONT DOOR! Thank you to everyone at Neighbors Windows and Doors....
Description of Work: I contacted Neighbors Windows and Doors to give me an estimate to replace all the the windows in my home as well as my front door. Although this house is only 12 years old, many of the window seals were shot. I was tired of 'shrink wrapping' the windows every winter to stay warm when the Palmer winds get blowing and the temperature is below zero! The greenhouse window in my kitchen was so bad, I had made a removable plexiglass storm window to try and keep the cold breeze out of my living area during the winter. I sent Neighbors the rough measurements and spoke with Adam, the Project Manager. He arranged to have Derek, his foreman/installer, come out to do the exact measurements. Because there were so many options both in window style and trim, I stopped by Capitol Glass Northern Windows in Anchorage to see samples. I am so glad I did! When I saw how the window sill-trim-molding and window were integrated, I was sold! Adam was great about returning my calls and emails as we narrowed down the selection and came up with the final quote. He came to my house prior to installation to confirm the measurements and check out the scope of the project. Derek and Jim showed up an hour early on the installation day. Wow, never had that happen before!! The Neighbors van is actually a state-of-the-art carpentry workshop that enables them to overcome any installation "surprise". These gentlemen work together as a team right down to the finish carpentry (both interior and exterior) and clean-up. And no plants, flowers or shrubs were damaged during this installation!!

One visit for measurements that was scheduled for an afternoon was apparently forgotten or the need to contact me about the delay was forgotten. The measure did actually take place the same day, albeit a couple hours later than planned. Not good when the customer is taking time off from work to accommodate the appointment. The time from the measurements and payment for materials until actual installation was due to be four to six weeks. Fortunately this actually turned out to be about three weeks. There was no time of day mentioned for the installation, only an agreement of two working days to complete the job. The installers arrived around 10 am to start the job. They kept a good pace and finished installing the last window and were out the door by 4:30 pm. I didn't even notice them taking a break to eat. The interior trim was installed on the second day and took about three hours (9:37 am until 12:30 pm). The installers were very professional and did an excellent job of communicating the plan, what was going to happen, etc. They were open to questions while they worked. The installers did a good job of cleaning the work area as they went. From using adhesive plastic over the carpet to using a vacuum to clean the area over and over. When all was said and done there were only a few spots on the walls that needed to be touched up from dings and scrapes. The interior trim was delivered ahead of time so I had time to stain it. The finished product looks great and the installers took all of the waste with them. The only thing for the homeowner to be aware of is that they will need to take it upon themselves to protect the floors in other areas from tools and traffic, especially in snowy weather. Snow that is tracked in will need cleaned up or prevented from contacting wood floors.
Description of Work: Neighbors was chosen to replace six windows in a two story home. One at ground level, three on the second floor and two on the second floor with access difficulty. Neighbors removed the 30 year old two-pane windows and replaced with triple-pane windows.

This may sound bad, but it is actually a very good thing. Prior to final signature of the contract, Neighbors Windows and Doors had to come out to the house to get additional measurements. This was not because they made an error in their initial measurements, it was because of a peculiarity in the design and construction in the house that would have resulted in the windows in the front not lining up correct if installed as initially measured. Had Neighbors not performed a full quality control process on my order, I would have been disappointed in the overall results. It was this review by the owner that convinced me to hire them on. Not only did they notice the potential for misaligned windows, they came out to remeasure, they suggested two ways to ensure the windows lined up following installation. Overall construction work was performed over the course of three and a half days. The work crew, which are direct employees of Neighbors Windows and Doors not subcontractors, showed up on time every day, were extremely professional in their work and attitude. As they removed each window, they cleaned the area, and installed the replacement window. Work proceeded quite quickly, and the crew allowed me to follow along and watch the progress. I inspected the work as each window was installed, and as I pointed out items of concern, they were, in most cases, immediately corrected, or noted for repair later. It is important to note that the overwhelming majority of items of concern were nit picky details that were not readily visible from any distance away from the window. Small marks, a nail hole that needed to be filled, or some rough exterior caulking that could have been smoother. There were only two items large enough to result in replacement of some interior trim, and even those were pretty petty. The installation crew cleaned up the work areas as the proceeded through the house. After they left each day, I was hard pressed to find any construction debris they left behind in our living spaces. Since the window installation has been completed, I have been going over them with a fine tooth comb, and have yet to find any flaw that is significant enough to warrant a complaint of any kind.
Description of Work: Removed existing windows and installed new windows. Total of 16 windows of varying sizes and styles (mix of fixed and casement windows) on two story home. Included sealing and insulation openings and installation of interior and exterior trim. Work included removal and disposal of existing windows.
