Ted has done several smaller jobs for us in the past and we were extremely impressed with the quality and value of his work, his sense of professionalism and his kind and pleasant demeanor to everyone in our family. He is truly one of the rare cases of someone who is enjoyable to work with in all aspects. Early in the year, we asked Ted to remodel our half bathroom. Once again, he did an outstanding job in all aspects and we were extremely happy with everything he did. After considering several different options for larger remodeling outfits, including Home Depot's own remodeling crew, we decided to hire Ted in the spring/summer timeframe to do a full kitchen, family room and master bedroom remodeling. Ted does work alone and I can understand how some people might be concerned that it will take him longer on their projects as a result. However, Ted's experience and work ethic make a difference and we felt strongly about going with a person that we knew we could trust rather than a larger outfit with inexperienced carpenters. We were very happy with our decision as Ted once again did a great job for us on our project, which included hanging all new cabinets, modifying wall framing, hanging drywall, installing new doors, new wood trim, baseboards and crown molding throughout. All of this work happened in a house built in 1939 that provided many unexpected challenges along the way, but Ted's experience helped him work through all these issues unfazed. As always, the quality of Ted's work was excellent and the process went as well as could reasonably be expected for a project of this size that we were trying to live through with 3 young children. Consistent with the other projects Ted completed for us, we felt that we received tremendous value for what we paid and appreciated working with someone that we were comfortable having in our house and trusted. The Kraftmaid cabinet representative that came to our house to answer some questions we had on the cabinets even commented what a great job that Ted had done on installing the cabinets and all of the moldings. In summary, I'd recommend that you give Ted a call to have him give you a quote for jobs of any size. While he has done a great job for us on numerous smaller projects, we were equally impressed by his work on a large project. Don't overlook Ted simply because he operates alone as you can't underestimate the value and time savings realized by having things done right the first time by someone who has the experience to do so.

We had several projects for Ted and it took him about a week to accomplish them all. He told us it would take that long and he was right. Our projects were done with professionalism and perfection. We couldn't have asked for anything better.
Description of Work: Ted is a perfectionist and rebuilt a wall for us from the studs to the Durock. He also installed our cabinetry, made custom maple tops for said cabinetry, installed our trim and even made a custom maple shelving unit for one of our cabinets out of the scrap wood. So resourceful!

He's on Angie's A List. He's excellent. I've had him twice. I not only would use him again, but I highly recommend him to all of my friends. He's clean, neat, and prompt. He does a wonderful job. His price was very good and very reasonable. He's very friendly. He's not a talker so he doesn't spend time chatting which is nice, but at the same time he's very friendly. He'll answer any questions and he's just a hard worker. He's very professional, gave a good quote and stood behind it. He's very knowledgeable. He's been doing this work for a long time and it shows. He's consequently able to do it in a minimal amount of time. He's not fussing around trying to figure it out. He knows what he's doing.
Description of Work: I used the services of Ted's Carpentry within the last three months. He did crown molding in my whole downstairs area. He put in a new door between my garage and my kitchen. He also put in a new interior door between my laundry room and an outer room.

Ted's Carpentry was hired to complete a home project started by my husband and never finished so we could put our house on the market. Ted was very flexible and was able utilize materials we already purchased. He didn't get upset when we changed our mind on something, and he didn't overcharge us for the change. He worked quickly and effectively communicated when our work was scheduled and what he was doing. We were very happy with the work, and his work enabled us to sell our house quickly.
Description of Work: Completed the installation of interior french doors and a glass paned walk door and completed the finish carpentry work in our formal dining room, i.e. Crown Moulding and Baseboard. Provided additional installation of two exterior doors and front storm door.

On a newer house this would probably be an hour job for an experienced installer like Ted. However, on our 1929 house the door frame was no longer plumb and the door opening was not the standard 80" high. After three hours of pounding, prying, and a little sawing the door was installed and closing perfectly. Being true to his word Ted didn't ask for more money than his initial estimate but I gave him a little more to compensate for the extra time it took him.
Description of Work: We needed our back storm door replaced. Ted offered to come on a Saturday which was great since both my wife and I work weekdays. For a nominal charge he even went to Menard's and picked up the new storm door on his way to our house. (We got Ted's name from the Menard's on south 108th St where we bought the door.)
I originally hired Ted in October to replace two doors in preparation for having the interior of my house completely repainted. After the painting was completed, my 25 year-old built-in refrigerator started to leak again, and this time couldn't be fixed. I did not want to replace it with another built-in, so I asked Ted if he could remove the current refrigerator so I could replace it with a standard model. He said he could and he could use part of the current cabinet to create a cabinet or sofit above the new refrigerator, so it would fit the current style of the kitchen cabinets. Ted is extraordinarily professional in his demeanor and in his carpentry work, as well. He has a drive to make it perfect for you, and he is very skilled at what he does. I was horrified when I saw the damage that was done by my chronically leaking built-in refrigerator, and he was able to replace all the damaged wallboard and flooring and made a beautiful space for my new refrigerator. Ted is prompt and courteous, and his prices are quite reasonable. I can give him my highest recommendation.
Description of Work: Replaced two doors, one interior and one between the attached garage and kitchen. Removed a built-in refrigerator that had been leaking on the wood flooring underneath for several years, and completely refinished the area, including new wallboard in the back, and sanding the damaged floor and replacing the boards as necessary and painting the area. He also used the material that had housed the refrigerator and added a sofit above to provide a finished space to house a new free-standing refrigerator.

My wife and I couldn't have been happier with the work Ted did. As others have commented, Ted is a perfectionist and will not rush through a job just to get it done. Ted takes his time and makes sure that everything he does is to the utmost quality. Given that our house is older and the door openings were non-standard, Ted had to make several modifications for the doors to be installed and function properly, which he did without any problems. Ted takes the time to make sure even the smallest details are perfect and Ted's finishing work is great. While Ted was at our house, I asked him to do a few other smaller projects, which he also did a great job on. In addition to his excellent work quality, Ted is very friendly, punctual and he was extremely kind to our 2 small children who talked his ear off and asked him a lot of questions. We can't recommend Ted more highly and are looking forward to having him back to our house for another project.
Description of Work: Ted installed 3 new steel entry doors and 2 new storm doors in my older home. In addition to the basic installatio nof the doors, Ted had to rework the framing of several of the doors, replace rotted wood around the door frame and and stools in certain cases and he insulated around the inner framing.

Ted was on time and went to work right away. He also suggested and made some recommendations about placing quarter round at the top of the closet space which closed the gap. I had also purchased some furniture the week before, and was having difficulty attaching the legs. I was glad he agreed to do this as an extra. As it turned out, even he had some difficulty because of the way these 'leg parts' were constructed.
Description of Work: Ted removed and replaced 3 closet doors with bi-fold doors. He also helped me to put together some furniture, on which legs had to be attached.

Went very well. Mr. Ted Rader apologized for the initial delay in getting this work done, and I was so pleased with his work that I added an additional $40 onto his quoted $480 fee. Ted replaced the facia board and one additional beam end and painted the new beam ends and facia with paint I provided.
Description of Work: Obtained a difficult to find cedar beam, removed old rotted decorative beam end pieces, cut new decorative beam ends to match old, installed new beam ends, caulked, replaced an adjacent bad piece of facia and painted the new beam ends and facia with paint I provided.

He did show up on time and he charged me what he quoted over the phone. I'm satisfied with all of the work that he did except for one thing, and that was that when he installed the hinges on the primary, he sheared off a few of the screws. I didn't find out about it until after he left. I am probably satisfied with the work that he did. I just wish he had told me what he had done.

I have a wall of large built-in oak cabinets. I needed two side walls removed above the lower cabinet doors--so two shelves could be combined into one huge shelf for a 60" television set. There was no easy way to cut out the walls without damaging the base. Ted did an excellent, excellent job of removing the walls, cutting a custom board to lay over the shelf to hide any damage and bring one-cabinet cohesion to the two cabinets. He even salvaged scraps to hide the seams on the back and top of the cabinet. I stained the shelf and you would never know it was not original. His response time, communication, and most importantly craftsmanship were off the charts.

While the project was small, Ted did a really nice job. He replaced the plywood, then felt that the grain would look better with the rest of the porch ceiling going the other way. He actually brought this to my attention (I believe most contractors would have just kept going) and asked if I wanted it redone. I did, and he took out the piece he had just put in and put in a new piece. He painted it, and put in the hook for my hanging flower basket. It was garbage day too, so he cut up the old plywood so the garbage men would take it away. While I didn't have a written estimate, he had quoted me $125. When he wrote the invoice as $150, I questioned it. He said he thought he had quoted me $150, and that's what his time and materials amounted to, but he didn't hesitate to only charge me the $125.
Description of Work: Ted replaced and painted a section of plywood on our porch ceiling that had rotted due to a roof leak.

Ted was identified by excellent ratings on Angie's List. He agreed to take the job. He modified the components, creatively solved problems in the fitting and style, and performed outstanding workmanship. We now have beautifully installed cabinetry and a disaster was averted. Ted discussed the project with us and how the numerous problems and mistakes made by the store might be overcome. Of the three carpenters of whom we had asked to look at the project, Ted was clearly the most thoughtful and provided the most confidence. This was a two-day project during which Ted not only worked hard, but used a lot of creativity and ingenuity, and provided options about how different parts of project might be approached, including stylistic changes to the molding. He is considerate, reasonable, and above all, very talented. We recommend him without reservation.
Description of Work: We had purchased semi-custom components for a wall unit and entertainment center from a home decor store for installation (permanent) in our home. The home interiors store had made numerous mistakes in measurements, finish, matching of woodwork, and style, and there were month-long delays in getting parts redone due to poor workmanship. It seemed a disaster. We wanted an independent carpenter, rather than one suggested by the store, so that we might disentangle ourselves from the store and get things fixed ourselves. We wanted a carpenter who could solve problems, modify the components to approximate what we had wanted, and to install the bookshelves and entertainment unit with high quality workmanship.

When our ''big box store'' installer was giving us problems, we had Ted do the kitchen plywood subfloor instead (for less money too). Later, we had him put new decorative molding around the windows. The people in the ''big box store'' had me buy some of the wrong stuff (I should have sent Ted to pick up the materials, but I was trying to help). Ted ended up sanding and painting some of the previous materials to combine with my purchase. It looks fantastic, and even though it took him longer than it should have due to the mix up, he didn't charge me more.
Description of Work: Ted installed a subfloor. He was so great to work with, we then called him back to replace the trim around our kitchen windows.
