Plumber repaird all leaking areas within both the time/cost estimate, and verified there were no further leaks by running water through the various pipes. The next day, one of the replaced valves in the laundry room was leaking. The company dispatched the same plumber, who diagnosed the problem as his forgetting to completely tighten the valve. He tightened the valve, and there were no further leaks.
Description of Work: Plumber diagnosed leaking water valves, and suggested least costly way to repair.

We originally asked for a quote to change the the tub fixtures, move some plumbing for the the bathroom sink and repair a faulty shut off valve for our water heater. When the quote came in it was a bit more than we wanted to spend so we kept most of the job but eliminated the change to the sink plumbing in favor of having their tile guy fix loose tile in the tub in preparation of having the tub and surround reglazed. Despite the fact that this was no where near the biggest job they could have Borth Wilson treated us as they would had we contracted for a whole bath remodel. They worked with us to determine what they could do for us within our budget. They put us on their schedule within a week. Their employees were on time, friendly, professional, neat and best of all honest. When the plumber discovered that there was nothing in fact wrong with the valve for the water heater he told us (without making us feel stupid for believing there was a problem in the first place) then called his office to have that part of the job removed immediately from the invoice. It was wonderful experience and we are very happy with the end result.
Description of Work: Changed plumbing for tub faucet from hot cold handles to single handle and replaced damaged tile around the tub faucet.

The estimator was nice enough - except that he was about 45 minutes late for the appointment. Unfortunately, both my husband and I had cancelled meetings and took off time from work to be there - the estimator even sent me a reminder email earlier that morning, which I took as a good sign. However, when 30 minutes passed from our original appointment time, I called the office and was told, "Oh, he just left about 15 minutes ago"... which was already 15 minutes after our 4pm appointment. I expressed my disappointment to the person on the phone. He finally arrived and didn't not really go into the reasons why he was incredibly late except to briefly mention something about the traffic. I reluctantly told him that he had about 5 or 10 minutes before we both had to go pick up our sons from camp and daycare. However, it seemed as from the moment he walked in the door (maybe from the moment he left his office!), he clearly did not want this job. We live in a 1000sf cape cod on Milwaukee's southwest side - our neighborhood is decidedly blue-collar, with cops, firemen, teachers and city workers throughout. It's a great area, but the homes range between 100k and 175k, maybe a little more for the lannon stone homes. We're in the process of renovating our entire home - from the kitchen, to siding and landscaping. We've finished most of the backyard and LR and are now starting on the bathroom. When someone tells me (barely stepping into the hallway) that "bathroom renovations, even small ones like these run around $12,000... but you'll get back twice that in resale", he obviously thinks he's working in Mequon or Brookfield - or in 2008. Granted, I should have stopped him right there, but I felt we should just let him do the estimate and see what happens. I understand that many bathrooms cost 3 times that amount, but we were looking for a standard remodel, new tile on the floor, new tile in the shower surround, same footprint, cast-iron tub, drywall, maybe a medicine cabinet... no waterfalls coming out of the ceiling, thank you. Our entire bathroom is about 5x8 and while I was wasn't particularly shocked about the $12k price he threw out there, what I was shocked about is that the perceived return on investment would be 200%. I work in lending - I know that we'd never get more than 50-80% back in our neighborhood and in this market. We just need to renovate and sell our home - not a good investment for $12k in my opinion. I also know to overbid when I don't want a job. We ended up giving him about 15 minutes before we had to leave and he ended up finishing the estimate in his truck. My husband and I chuckle and shake our heads in disbelief when we compare their final $13,015.00 estimate to the 4 others we've obtained since - all ranging in the mid thousands, which is a better gauge of the type of bathroom remodel that should be done on our home, in our neighborhood. These are estimates from other reputable companies with excellent finish quality, not low bids from handymen. We've framed the Borth-Wilson estimate, it's good for a laugh! We also thought it was funny that we'd have to wait up to 12 Business Days for the work to be complete... it's our only bathroom and we have 2 young children. :-) If you're looking for a remodel in a more expensive home with more than one bathroom, perhaps Borth-Wilson is the company for you. Just be sure to book extra time for the appointments - I don't have confidence that they will hold to their end. I didn't mark this experience as an "F" because the estimator was a decent guy and because I'm sure their work is good - I called them for an estimate because others on Angie's List seem quite pleased with their work. But they should really take into account the true value of a renovation for resale and specifically price the job to the home accordingly. $13 grand for a bathroom in my home is just bad business-sense.
Description of Work: This was just an estimate for a small bathroom in a typical south-side cape cod in Milwaukee (3BR 1BA). We need to redo the entire bathroom (floor/shower tile/new sink, toilet, etc.), but will retain the same footprint/4pc lav. NOTE: We did not have Borth-Wilson handle the renovation.

Response from Borth-Wilson Plumbing & Remodeling
It is difficult to respond to a critique based on a single visit to the home but I will try to address what I believe to be the issues of importance; 1. Our usual appointment system allows for an hour window (4 PM – 5PM) because it is difficult to determine if the estimator’s previous appointment or meeting will run long. In this case we are aware that a new employee apparently set a fixed time of 4:00PM. Our estimator was not aware of this. We've apologized several times for this miscommunication. 2. To completely gut a bathroom and replace with Kohler fixtures and ceramic tile is generally in the $8,000 - $12,000 range unless less expensive materials are selected. It matters little whether the bath is 5 X 7 or 8 X 10. We like to advise a customer up front about the general cost involved in a project such as this. 3. She asked us to quote on more than the usual gut job. Our estimate included replacement of a glass block window, removal and replacement of all the drywall in the bathroom and priming and painting of the new drywall. We’ve reviewed the proposal and determined that all pricing was very appropriate for the work requested. 4. In accordance with State Law we specify the expected duration of the job in each of our quotations. The customer has a right to know how long our technicians will be in the home and a guarantee that the job will not drag on for six months. The 9-12 business days stated in her quote did not refer to the time that their bathroom would be out of service. We never leave a customer without a working toilet and a functioning bathtub at the end of each day. 5. We find it difficult to believe that four other contractors quoted in the “mid thousands” for the same work unless, a) the scope of the quote was significantly reduced, b) the type of materials proposed are far less expensive or c) the contractor and/or his subs are not journeyman technicians. I would welcome a line-by-line comparison of the quotations and hope that she will consider that option. Borth-Wilson is not a “high-end” remodeler. We cater to people like ourselves – regular folks with families. We are proud of our quality, our people and our ability to give good value for the money. Don Wilson President

Quoted over the phone and then came out to view the job and provide a final estimate. Phone service was polite and quickly quoted the standard job. I wasn't sure about a phone quote, so they came out to view and estimate. It was a good thing they did, as I thought I needed two water heaters replaced, but only one was required. Estimator showed up right on time, and did a great job of explaning alternatives and costs. Didn 't try to oversell what was not needed. The quote for one heater was exactly 1/2 the phone quote. Installer arrived a few days later, again right on time. In and out in 2 hours. Good cleanup and removed old water heater. I like they way this company works. I have a high trust level to call them for future work.

I was very satisfied with their service from the initial phone call to the final installation. They were very professional and politely answered all my questions over the phone. They helped me to decide if I could go from a 50 to a 40 gallon tank. They even had a special on the tank I ordered so that made it an even better deal. Our old heater started to leak very badly on Saturday. I called their service number; they returned my call promptly and instructed me over the phone how to shut down the water heater.
Description of Work: Our water heater had a very slow leak from the base. Because the water heater was 13 years old we decided to just replace it. I called Borth-Wilson on Friday and they put in a new water heater on Monday.

The in-home estimate was good. Patrick was prompt. However, it took longer to get their estimate back than anyone else. They did not use enough postage and the letter came postage due. Then, their quote was more than 3 times all 5 of the other quotes I got. Needless to say, I did not use them to complete my work.

Overall, this was a good experience. No muss, no fuss. I have one question about a price that I am waiting to have answered on some work that we have not done yet. In the emailed quote for future work, it seemed different from the quote he stated a few days ago. I would recommend this company. There was no drama. No major event or issue. They are professionals; they came and did their jobs. I put N/A about the price above, because I have no idea if this is a good or bad price. It seems like a lot for a few hours work, but I didn't compare pricing. I knew the price ahead of time, so I am not complaining. I would definitely hire them again. Got their recommendation from this list. Thanks.
Description of Work: Called last Friday saying that we had multiple problems, one of which was a toilet leaking into our kitchen (Yikes!!). We have other bathrooms, and the toilet was leaking only when flushed, so we didn't need emergency service. On Monday, master plumber Don Wilson came out to look at the multiple problems and schedule the repair for the problems to fix first. Scheduled the repair for today at noon. Earlier this morning, the plumber called and said he was available earlier in the day and asked if he could come right away. That was fine, so he did. He tore up our dining room ceiling, cleaning everything up afterward. He replaced a drain in a shower. He also did the toilet repair and then told me that to fix it properly, we should replace the toilet and the collar. My only thought was that it could have been helpful if he had told us this before putting it back together. But he fixed the leak and cleaned up.

I had another company give me an estimate to replace our pipes because we were getting a reduction in water flow and pressure. They came out and gave an estimate of $1,300. I then had Pat Wilson from Borth come out. Within a few minutes he found that our problem was in the bypass valve of our water softener. When he pressed this, the problem was solved. Thus my $1,300 problem went away. Pat then talked to me about other plumbing jobs that might need to be done in the future. He was patient, thorough, and very knowledgeable. It's nice to have an honest opinion from a professional. His advice appeared to be excellent and we will be calling them in the future to have work done. I recommend this company to anyone considering having work done.

I'M SORRY OUR PRICE WAS OUT OF YOUR RANGE BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE ARE "OVERPRICED." WE USE LICENSED PLUMBERS FOR ALL OUR WORK - NOT UNLICENSED "ON-THE-JOB-TRAINED" FOLKS WHO CANNOT SOLVE ANY OTHER PROBLEMS. I WOULD ASK THAT YOU RETRACT THIS REPORT. YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH US AND IT IS NOT HONORABLE TO SPOIL OUR RATINGS WITH AN "F" SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU DO NOT LIKE OUR PRICE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION.

It was great. Joel did an excellent job. He was courteous, knew what he was doing and went right to work. Cleaned up afterwards. I will definitly call this company should I need plumbing work in the future.
Description of Work: Replaced outside faucet, because the old one wouldn't turn off. Also I couldn't turn off the water from the inside, because that handle was frozen. Joel from Borth-Wilson replaced the outside faucet, and put a new turn-off inside (basement), that does not need to bleed. In the Winter, turn off inside, and turn on outside, and let the water drain out. Very simple instructions.

A Borth Wilson employee (Dave) showed up on the date and at the time agreed upon. Talked over what was to happen that day, and he started taking out the cabinets, etc. Later that day, the plumber (Dennis) came in to replace the toilet, shower rod and shower head. So, on day 1 when I got home, the flooring was completed, the toilet and shower were working. On Day 2, Dave, an electrician (Kevin) and Dennis came in at the stated time and finished up installing cabinets, taking out a light fixture and replacing it with a temporary fixture (which is what is there now, until I finally decide what type of fixture to put over the sink). That was about it, 2 days of a lot of work.
Description of Work: I had the bathroom updated and remodeled. New flooring, new toilet, new vanity and sink, faucet, towel bar, shower rod and shower head. Mirrored cabinet which replaced the old mirrored cabinet. Had a cabinet taken off the wall over the toilet and had a corner cabinet installed instead.
