This company, specifically Chris Stuart, has been great to work with. There were some delays, mostly due to the insane housing market in the area, and a plumber who fell ill. When it came down to it though, Chris made sure it got done in time for us to move in, and got done right. He was extremely responsive, always picked up the phone when I called, and did great keeping me up to date on any schedule changes. My pipes, all new PEX, are great, and my gas line is now sufficient for my needs and up to code.

I made an appointment nearly two weeks ahead of time for installation of a dishwasher and sink faucet. Called the day prior and asked to add 2 slow drains to the to-do list and was assured no problem. Travis showed up on time, but things went downhill from there. He said the scheduler didn't allot him enough time to do the job, and that he would have to reschedule for the following week. My husband asked him to just do the original request (dishwasher & sink faucet), however he declined and said he didn't have enough time for those. Phone calls back and forth solved nothing. Travis left after giving us an estimate for $1,300 - which is totally outrageous for this scope of work. He estimated the time to be 5-6 hours, which is well over $200/hour. It's very clear he simply didn't want to do the job - very frustrating as I now have a new dishwasher sitting in my home awaiting installation.

They were actually very very good and then I used them its the reason I don't use angieslist anymore, they advertised real something [19:39] for reasonable price so I called them couple of guys they are nice people and the price is reasonable but they tried to fit it for some darn reason they couldn't do and then it's not my, it's not their fault they couldn't and its more like my fault the way how certain features are design and to how they can't find the parts and so still I had to pay them, because they came out try to do it right for like half an hour or whatever and I felt hey these people didn't do their jobs and here goes my money I couldn't give them nothing because they worked, tried and then later on I got set up so I called the huge company this guy came out he wasn't anymore expensive either I found out and this guy find out the problem right away and fixed it there was no problem he carry these old parts you know so that kind of thing people need to be aware they need to make a deal before they come out you see you cant fix it no matter how long you work half an hour, one hour, two hour then you don't get paid there is no such deals that I conscientiously I felt sorry out of my heart and then they wasted their company hours coming in here its the humane thing for me to do to pay whatever hundred or whatever so I did.

Digging began. When completed, two workmen moved the manhole cover and were stunned to discover that there was no sewer connection (it was a communication installation). There was no connection discovered in the area where the new drain pipe would connect to any sewer. Pipes, however, were laid connecting all the drains on my property. I was then presented with a proposal and an invoice for $4,000 by one of the young men who dug up the area where the new pipes were laid. The proposal was to dig up a 5" x 5" section of my asphalt parking area to "hunt" for a connection to a sewer line at a cost of $4000. I declined to do this. I then began calling the city Bureau of Environmental Services, which D & F did not do. I relayed BES's suggestion to D & F that the old rain drain connection could be to the sewer line on my property and that scoping should be done to identify where the connection was located. Scoping did reveal that the sewer line connection could have been made at another location on my property. To make the connection which D & F should have made would now be virtually impossible, requiring digging up an entire new area of my front yard and removing, rearranging the new pipes already laid, etc. Finally D & F drilled a hole in my retaining wall and the rain would now drain directly into the street (not what the City of Portland would like to see) Summary: D & F misled me by saying that the connection necessary for the drain pipe would be near the edge of my retaining wall, that the connection would be a simple "drop down." They failed to check with BES, failed to scope my sewer line prior to doing the work and even made one unnecessary drain connection that was not in the initial contract. This horrible process went on from Nov.10, 2014 until December14, 2014
Description of Work: replace old rain drain system up to a street level retaining wall Then "drop down" near the wall to connect to the sewer line. A manhole cover was near the wall.

An unfortunate mistake. Our kitchen sink was leaking We tried a few plumbers who were unavailable and then D and F, which was. The plumber painted a fairly grim picture of how a considerable amount of piping?not just that under the sink?had to be replaced along with the faucet. He said it would cost $1398. Since this appeared to be a big job, we agreed. Starting from the time the plumber was dispatched, and including the time he had to go somewhere for a part that he should have had in the truck and the time he spent in his van in our driveway after the job was done, it was five hours. The faucet retails for $211. Some plastic piping and related incidentals?let's very generously say $100. That indicates a labor cost of $217 an hour for five hours (of which he actually worked 3.5 in the house.) When I called D and F to tell them our electrical service near the sink was still off (it had worked before the plumber was there) I also asked why it cost so much. I was condescendingly told that ?we are not a time and materials shop.? Period. D and F has a pricing model that can really harm people who don't know much about plumbing (and I'm at the head of the line). They can tell you that it is a big project, charge you a big amount, then do relatively little work with few parts and refuse to tell you how they arrived at the price.

I contacted D & F Plumbing about a project to change two sinks/faucets/toilets in my bathroom. I was looking for a price quote and some guidance on fixture choices. I explained that I have a 1900s house and that some of the plumbing is not standard and I wanted to confirm, prior to their purchase, that the chosen fixtures could be installed with the current plumbing. The people to whom I spoke (Sandi and Randy) suggested that I purchase their $99 consultation which would get a plumber to my house to evaluate the situation and provide a bid. I took this suggestion, made the appointment and, as requested, forwarded a list of of the parts that I hoped to use. A few days later the plumber arrived but when we started talking about the feasibility of the parts he told me that he had only allotted 30 minutes for the appointment and that he couldn't take the time to verify the fixtures. I explained that this was a major reason for purchasing the consultation and reminded him that he had been in possession of the parts lists for over a week and could have reviewed it previously so he agreed to give a little additional time. Nonetheless, at the end of the consultation I did not have a clear answer as to whether the proposed parts could be used and the "binding bid" that was given was extremely high (at least twice that of any other plumber) and carried enough disclaimers as to be completely unbinding. In the end I had a quote that was dependent on all of the fixtures being installed as-is but with no assurance that the fixtures could actually be installed as-is. I feel that the consultation fee that I paid was for nothing. The plumbers that I finally selected to do the job had no problem in discussing the fixtures and guiding me when there were potential problems. I would never use D&F Plumbing again and will not recommend them to anyone else.

IOriginal intent was just to replace wax gasket. Disassembly revealed non-standard original construction and likely ongoing problems unless replaced. I agreed to a new toilet after discussion and using internet to examine models and confirm fit within constrained space. Job wa completed on same day in only a few hours. Plumber communicated well the status and options. Result was a new toilet with 0.6 gallon/flush instead of old 3.4 gallon/flush, and likely fewer future problems. It was good that the increased cost was OK.

I am an owner of several multi-plex rental units. I called and spoke to Sandi about an issue I was having with one of my units, at that time we scheduled an appointment for service for the next day at 3pm. At about 3:40 my tenant called me and said they hadn't showed up. My tenant had called D and F directly to see when they would be there. My tenant said he spoke to Randy (who was extremely rude and unprofessional), and Randy and said he didn't have any record of an appt. that day and basically buzz off.I then called and spoke to Randy and tried to explain the conversation Sandi and I had the previous morning. Randy told me he didn't care to hear my story and that we don't have an appointment. I asked him to call Sandi (the owner) and see what they could do for me since they dropped the ball and I was certain Sandi would recall our conversation. Randy refused and continued to be rude and disrespectful. I told him that the reason I called them in the first place was that I had used them before at my previous employer. Randy told me that he didn't believe that I ever used them before (calling me a liar), so I offered to give the service address and he wouldn't even take it. Next Randy said he could send someone out that evening but he would charge me $199.00 to show up since I was making an emergency call. I told him I thought that was ridiculous since they dropped the ball and didn't show up, I asked him again to call Sandi and see if she was willing to charge the non-emergency fee of $99.00 since the original appt. was not after hours. Again he refused. Finally he told me that he was going to risk getting fired and not help me at all. He told me that he could tell that once his plumber showed up and told me the price that I would just send his plumber away anyways. Again, I am the owner of several mulit-plex units so money wasn't really an issue but I didn't appreciate being charged an emergency after hours fee when I actually had an appointment that they didn't show up to. Sandi was very nice and helpful, even though the appointment got screwed up. Randy was terrible and really should be fired. If I was the owner of this company I would never allow my employees to treat my customers that way. In this case it's especially harmful to D and F because my regular plumber just retired and I was looking for a long term plumber for all of my properties. I use plumbers on a very regular basis.

Unfortunately, this call came during an extreme cold snap, we were dealing with hundreds of calls day and night for broken water pipes, frozen pipes, extreme emergencies. This was and is not our "normal or standard business practices". I spoke with [member name removed] shortly after this incident where i apologized profusely, and I thought we came to a reasonable understanding. We were working 24/7 for 10 days straight and when one is this busy, one or two jobs tend to get overlooked.. definatly not intentionally. How [member name removed] handled it with my dispatcher is extremely different than described. Either way, this definatly should have been handled better and wasn't. It is truly sad, that when trying to be reasonable in a situation that was extreme and very "not normal", some become even more unreasonable. We do our best everyday, and sometimes we are even human.. but that is not acceptable these days. Best of luck to [member name removed] and her several multi-plex units!

I called Dand F and asked them to fix a three small leaks under my sink. Because my house was undergoing remodeling, I didn't meet them there; they were let in by my general contractor. They fixed the leaks. My problem is the price. I would guess, generousy, that the parts for the job totalled $3.00. Although I wasn't there, I would guess from my experience, that an experienced plumber would have taken 45 minutes to complete the job, max. I got a bill for $471.00. That was more than double what I had expected. I called and asked for an accounting and was told that everything was a flat rate. I asked what the flat rates were and was told that they would get back to me. They never did. They just re-issued the invoice. No parts cost. No hours worked. No accounting at all. I ended up paying the bill because it wasn't worth the time to fight it. That said, I would never use this company again. They ripped me off.

it is sad when we are hired to do a job, explain the rates/pricing to clients before arriving on the job site, we give a price for the repairs asked of us to complete, tell us they are going to be available via phone to authorize the work, then tell me to just have the plumber fix it.. then complains after the fact because he thinks the parts should be $3.00 and time 45 minutes. All of this was explained to him prior to us arriving at his home and his contractor was there, he paid the invoice, and his repairs were made. We really could not have done anything else to make [member name removed] happy other than working for free, and we are not in business to work for free. The repairs to his home were completed by a licensed journeyman plumber, the work site left cleaner than when we arrived and he has no more issues under his sink. Our job was successful. Thank you.

Dand F was available to provide next-day service; an A for availability Joe arrived on time, worked steadily and professionally; an A for promptness and professionalism The quality of the work is good; an A for quality workmanship The $34/15 min. labor charge is a little high; a B for slightly high labor cost. The charges for materials is too high; a D for material costs. Ex: The bill included a charge of $49.95 for an earthquake strap. That didn't seem right, so I asked if that was correct. Later I learned that their wholesale price was $16.95 from Consolidated Supply; a 200% mark up. The retail price for this strap at 2 different hardware stores was only $17 or $18. I confirmed a similar mark up for a 1" ball valve for which they paid $10.98 and charged me $24.95. I can only assume the charges for other parts were similar. I called Dand F to talk about my concern, but they defended the charges. I have a major plumbing project planned for next summer that my regular plumber doesn't want to tackle. I was looking for a local small business that I could trust with this job. D and F failed to earn my trust. I wouldn't turn them loose on a job based on time an materials.

Yes, we mark up our materials. There is not one for profit business I know that does not mark up their materials. We make no money on labor and if we made $50.00 or even $100.00 on this job and he holds that against us, then that is really a shame. It is really too bad that people who have never owned a service oriented business can judge what they know nothing about - being a blogger does not count as a service business. I am sorry that you were unhappy with the little profit we made, we just don't work for free.

This review has a twist, so please read through. Our bathroom sink in the 2nd floor was not draining after only about a gallon of water use, and I was unable to get a snake past the turn of the pipe right at the wall. Dand F were able to get it cleaned out and running without a hitch. He showed me the water draining for a good minute, so it all looked just fine. Total work was about an hour. About a week later, though, the drain was back to not working after only a couple gallons. I called back Dand F, and they were very professional in scheduling the same person to look at it the next day, and it was corrected. While it would have been ideal to not need the 2nd visit, I saw the results of the first visit and we both agreed it was draining just fine. I'm more pleased that they stood by their work and came back promptly, and did not charge any extra. I've worked with them in the past, and will continue to do so.

The leak was more extensive than we thought, and the plumber said there was no point in doing any repair work to the toilet because of the damage. He did go into our other upstairs bathroom and reseated the toilet on a new wax ring as we figured the toilets had likely not been checked since the house was built, before we purchased it 11 years ago, as a preventative measure.

I had discovered my water heater leaking one evening at bed time when I had no hot water. The next morning I called Dand F Plumbing and a very helpful young lady made me an appointment for later that morning. Matt arrived first, checked the heater in my basement and told me the heater would have to be replaced. No surprise there. He called for a replacement heater which arrived soon after with Dan who helped to get it into the basement. They later removed and hauled away the old heater and a very old heater that had been stored there for many years. I found both of these men to be very polite, helpful, and professional. Although new water heaters are expensive, I wasn't surprised by the cost and was very happy by the service.

D and F are, by far, the best plumbers I have ever worked with. Each plumber I have had work on my faucets, shower, drains, etc. has been knowledgeable and never failed to give good advice on the nature of the problems, the types of possible repair and advice on dealing with any future problems. These folks are real professionals and always address the actual problem, not some standard operating procedure imposed by a corporation. D and F are truly outstanding and I recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: This job was one of many that D and F have done for me in the last 2 years. This one was a clearing of a difficult bathroom sink line but I have had a complex shower valve and trim operation done with marvelous results. That project produced excellent advice on how best to upgrade my shower without an expensive tearing out and rebuilding of the water connections and outlets and all the work was completed in record time.

We hired Dand F as a referral from another contractor that had done some work in the home a few days ago. We were pleasantly surprised that Dand F showed up early for the appointment, the gentleman was very personable and seemed very conscious of the home and keeping drop cloths down, cleaning up any dust/debris and leaving the area very clean after repair. I started with only needing a stove gas hook-up and leaky faucet fix - but felt so comfortable with the contractor and his knowledge answering any questions I had, that I ended up requesting him stay to install a new garbage disposal (our kitchen is 1925 and the original sink hasn't had a disposal until today), which involved tearing out and replacing all the old piping all the way into the basement, and replacing the line to the dishwasher. I even had him double check our other gas lines for any potential leaking, and asked him to install an in-line water filter to our ice maker. It was well worth it, as it was done so professionally and efficiently, and he was very fair and honest. The work was completed on time, and we are VERY satisfied with this company. I would highly recommend them and we will definitely be using them again for our plumbing needs in the future!
Description of Work: Gas stove hook-up, leaky pipe fix under kitchen sink, in-wall replacement of main water line from sink to basement, replacement of non-code water line to dishwasher, in-line water filter installation, and gas line check.

Job was completed, the quality of work was average, they left large globs of PVC cement dripping on concrete floor in basement. minor maybe, but the plumber sent out seemed like his mind was on other things that afternoon. Taken back by how much time he spent texting on his phone, rather than concentrating on the job at hand. Disappointed by quality of service and billing, would not recommend. They are union, so its a premium price for time and materials.
Description of Work: My bathroom remodeling contractor had used them before, and called them to reroute a line. They charged time and materials for a simple bathroom sink line, the total cost went way over what I had budgeted for. Had to deal with them in small claims court. Avoid, unless fixed price. UPDATE , D&F never bothered to my request that they come out and clean the mess they left, when I refused to pay until the job was done, including cleaning up the mess, that fell through the subflooor. They did not bother to even return my calls, instead after 2 months of no response they sent me to a bill collector - now 2 years later - they label it as a complete fabrication . Their account only further verifies that this is a company to AVOID ! Unless it is in writing, DO NOT engage a time and materials project with D&F,. There are other plumbers in Portland, with higher customer satisfaction. Unless it is very routine AND IN WRITING, AVOID D&F plumbing. I had miserable experience. with a firm that was recommended by a subcontractor, and close by. but after my experience, I would NEVER RECOMMEND

Response from D & F Plumbing, Heating and Cooling
The member's report is very interesting and 2 years late. We never had a complaint from the member and actually had to take him to court and won to get payment for the job we successfully completed. There was no PVC globs on the floor and as for the texting, We do not have texting on our company phones. This report, while being 2 years later, is completely fabricated by the member since he actually had to pay for a job after receiving a judgement against him, which I can easily prove and supply. Please consider this when reading this inflamatory and factually false report. Thank you for the opportunity to respond.

They were on time. They spent better part of 2 days here doing it and very conscious of being in a home. They didn't mess the carpets up. Their estimate was right on money. Everything came out perfect and we didn't have any problem with it sounds. We were happy with that and they were good operations. They have real conscientious people in their staff. They gave us the good estimate and they were the cheapest, but they were the best. They were not on Angie's list with the time. However, they were a factory authorized operation for a type of material that we used in our shower; where I initially obtained the company. We have installed from on & off knob, to the actual piping throughout the first floor down through the basement and the water draining. Its complete reinstallation and I just have to do the whole things. They did a very good work and we never had a problem. They explained all the different facets of the operation, as they were doing and we understood what was had to happen. They did a good work in the long run and that's the way they did it. The communication was very good. We never raised any concern because they just always give it along. They communicated what they were doing and thought us lot about shower plumbing, which I don't know much about. We will use them again because next month we would be putting in new drain system for the washroom dryer system. I have used them and I was very happy with them. I will recommend them.
Description of Work: D & F Plumbing Co put in a complete shower setup from one end to other and took out some portion of the ceiling as well as the basement to install it couple of months ago.

It went very well. They did a good job of earthquake retro fitting the heater into my old house. The installer was very creative about what to do.
Description of Work: I used them to purchase and install a new water heater.
