GB Builders

GB Builders was recommended to me by a friend, and the first thing I did was look in Angie's List to see whether they had any reviews. They didn't, and that worried me. It turns out that they are absolutely fantastic at what they do. I'm writing this review so that other people don't worry the same way I did. I wanted to build a steampunk themed game room with a wet bar. I had some highly unusual ideas, some very complex plans drawn up by an architect, and this just was not going to be a cookie-cutter remodel. Some general contractors I talked to were put off by the idea, but Grant and his team thought it would be a fun project. That attitude won them the contract. We started with Grant drawing up a budget. It was very well detailed, and accounted for everything we expected to build. As it turned out, it was pretty accurate as well. Building commenced and I was impressed by Grant's people. Usually there are one or two people on the team you are a little leery of letting into your house. There wasn't anybody like that I met - they were all personable, competent and motivated. They were quite obviously interested in pleasing the customer. The subcontractors were likewise all very competent, listened to what I wanted and turned out some beautiful work. The overall workmanship on my project is superb. We ran into some unexpected problems - dry rot, a ceiling that was nowhere near flat or square, etc. For each of these Grant drew up a change order that made it very clear where my money was spent. I added some things along the way, they were open to the changes, and I likewise signed off on detailed change orders that were accurate to the penny. There were no hidden costs, no surprises, and no long, tedious delays. It's obvious that Grant is very experienced in coordinating a project and having his people where they need to be when they need to be there. There were two cost overruns. Grant underestimated the complexity of painting would entail, but then cut me a discount on the bill to make up for it. Given the complexity of what we built, I can understand missing a stroke. It's not like we built a simple, square room with a single paint color. The other overrun was because the foreman insisted on doing the paneling and mechanical details perfectly - and I have no problem with that whatsoever. The paneling is a work of art involving multiple curves and everything is precisely aligned & absolutely symmetrical. There are no half-width pieces to make it happen, no odd looking splices, even though I know that he had to hand machine some of the slats to make it happen. Every carpenter & cabinet maker who's seen it has praised the workmanship - and that's exactly what I wanted. My goal for this project was to make something that would look right at home in Disneyland. Something that would make you believe you were looking at a different time and place rather than some cheap imitation you might find at some local fun park. GB Builders delivered.

The entire crew was wonderful. Grant is very knowledgable and professional. I really enjoyed working with Grant I found him to be extremely trustworthy and very thorough. He worked in a very timely manner and was very efficient. When remodeling there are always unforseen problems and Grant was great at communicating everything with me. I would highly recommend him and cannot say enough about how wonderful they were.
