The service was great. We discussed the original design with Traci and received some rough drawings. I would highly recommend having the lead contractor come out and do a pre-construction walk through. Ours was Rob and he was fantastic. Once we felt comfortable with the plan, construction began right away. Everyone was very professional and worked really hard. I was comfortable giving their team a key to my house and we had no issues. I was very satisfied with the quality of the work done and they were more than happy to come out and talk through any questions I had.
Description of Work: Needed two sunrooms rebuilt (both were leaking water). Also had an under-house structural beam reinforced.

Response from TENHULZEN RESIDENTIAL
[member name removed], I am bewildered that you feel compelled to post these remarks about your project so long after it was completed. Our records from the construction process and walkthrough indicate the experience was favorable given the challeges we experienced with material vendors. Your rapport with Brett was quite good and although the project was delayed beyond our control, once he expectations were re-established, the project was completed as planned. The walkthrough indicated no major concerns and we returned to take care of the warranty items beyond the warranty period and were even asked to perform additional work on your home. Regarding the employees working on site. You and I had a candid conversation on the front porch with scotch and cigars in hand. During that conversation, you stated that our company had some of the best people you had seen in the construction industry. I remember that comment because of your eperience with employees. I know the total price was always a sticky point. Our policy is to be up front with construction costs as preseted in a stipulated sum agreement. Collecting invoices at predicted pay points was a challenge wih the Trust, but we were patient throughout the process. If you are still displeased with the service you received, please call me to discuss in more detail. I enjoy seeing you in person and chating up auto racing, travelling and maaging employees. Sincerely, Michael Tenhulzen, CGR, CAPS Director Tenhulzen Residential

This was major interior work that involved relocating the bathroom. Michael was both caring and professional. While Michael's bid was higher, I felt like a member of the family during the whole experience. The designer did a really good job at conveying my style. My home was even part of the annual kitchen tour in this area.
Description of Work: They remodeled our kitchen and two bathrooms. The work was completed in two and a half months and completed two weeks ahead of schedule.

We are happy to give the Tenhulzen team a rating of excellent for the work they have done at our home. Our total investment over an approximately 10-year period has been in the $175K-$200K range. Their preliminary process begins with a clearly structured design, contract, and drawings phase that enabled us to work out design elements, choose materials and anticipate costs--all within our stated budget. All of our projects finished at or very near the anticipated project timeline with minimal delays. For the duration of the projects Tenhulzen's management team ensured punctual, responsive and high quality design, craftsmanship, and installation. They worked safely with great attention to the comfort of the family and the neighbors. At the end of our projects, all outstanding matters were completed without delay. Additionally, if issues came up long after the last check was written, they returned and resolved the problem. For example, when an fixtures needed tightening and adjustment months after project completion, Tenhulzen sent the installer to do the job again. It is very reassuring to see familiar faces on projects spanning such an extended period of time and significant investment. Tenhulzen is a multi-generational family business, and many of Tenhulzen's team members are long-term employees of the business, who have advanced skill levels in the trades required for the work: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, etc. Moreover, all the Tenhulzen people--the owner's Mike and Traci and all the managers and craftspeople we worked with--are friendly and well-trained. During the work phase of two projects, we traveled for weeks at a time with full confidence that the team would move the project along, secure our home, and communicate with us electronically when necessary. Their use of digital photography is particularly helpful for working with traveling clients. When a minor problem did arise, it was fixed seamlessly, without additional cost to us. For example, as will happen with any remodeling project, occasionally minor disruptions or problems have occurred on our projects--dings, delays, errors in materials delivery. When an entry door was scratched during a project, Tenhulzen immediately arranged for sanding and repainting without cost to us. We have never experienced a major problem with Tenhulzen projects at our home. Although their bids tend not to be the lowest, the quality of work process and product is certainly worth the additional investment. With this kind of professional service, we will certainly contract with Tenhulzen on any future remodeling work for our home.
Description of Work: Over the past 10 years,Tenhulzen has completed a number of remodeling projects at our 3,000 sf home, including: Complete master bathroom remodel Complete guest bathroom remodel Demolition of an old deck and design and build of a new deck and patio of approximately 800 sf Annual maintenance of deck finish and cleaning Installation and finish of hardwood flooring interior painting and finish carpentry

Okay. Carpet selection. It was done in super fast one day jaunt. I grabbed a few samples thinking that surely we would take them back to my house and see how they looked in my light, etc. NOPE. TR ordered the carpet. I wanted wool carpet but feared moth damage. I learned later through another carpet person that moth damage is not such an issue anymore because the mfg have figured out how to treat the carpet. Anyway, TR insisted on patterned wool carpet for the front stairs. It is the ONE thing that we really like. The other carpet fiasco is that I got a call one day from Autumn, the designer portion of this outfit. She was looking at the carpet with the paint we chose and there is no way that the carpet she (already) ordered was going to go with the paint for one of the bedrooms, so would it be okay if she ordered the same carpet as the other 2 bedrooms but in a different colorway? I should have said, fine, but you now own the other piece of carpet that YOU went ahead and ordered without checking it with the paint colors first. Topping it off, it is not the same carpet just in another colorway. It's a completely different carpet. Arrgh. My carpet is okay but I would have preferred wool. Why didn't they know that it would have been okay? Why wasn't I given more attention to picking my materials? I felt like any time I questioned them that I was personally offending both Brian T and Autumn D. Brian acted pretty arrogant . Let me tell you. He kept mentioning that we probably would not want brick for our back patio. Oh no? We paid $40,000 for that patio. Wouldn't you much rather have some decking material that looks like plastic, like faux wood? Uh, NO. Okay worst of it? I love my stair case. They replaced the hand rail, the balusters and the newel posts. The treads? They are little walnut pieces on the end! The treads are not solid walnut treads all the way across! Brian said that the stairs cost $150,000. It's NOT LIKE THEY BUILT A NEW STAIR CASE FROM SCRATCH. It was a job, but it was cosmetic. They did nothing to the stairs except put new tread ends on them and inlaid carpet. They don't even have solid treads but have INLAID carpet as is done in every tract house in King County. It's embarrassing to me. I kept pleading that I wanted solid walnut treads. My guess is that they would not have known how to have the carpet laid on top of the walnut, perhaps? Good grief, Brian even wanted to do inlaid carpet down the hallway. Ugh. That would have looked so Las Vegas casino to me. Back to the master bathroom. I told them I wanted one chandelier in the mba and not over the tub. What did I get? 2 funky, cheap lights that are an ugly antique nickel finish that are actually hall and foyer lights. They are going down and we may use them in the laundry room of our 3rd and largest phase of remodeling. I have already purchased 2 chandeliers that are better suited to the master bathroom. It was a real nightmare and fiasco and it should have been easy and straight forward. With tax and the payments to the designer that TR hired, the PARTIAL upstairs remodel cost us over $500,000. Besides the two closets that were outfitted in melamine shelving (big whoop) the only room that was really and quot;designedand quot; and built was the master bath and it was a catastrophe. I feel that since my house was a mess and dirty when they first met with us that they treated us like we did not matter. Yet another complaint? They NEVER draped off the downstairs while doing any demo or carpentry work. It was not until the painters came that our downstairs was draped off for dust and dirt control. The painters were top notch and they draped and re-draped the downstairs. We also had Carlisle wide plank walnut floors installed. Those were not protected properly. In fact my big pedestal bathtub was dragged across the bedroom floor after it had been finished. They half heartedly tried to repair the scratches. They also did not finish the floors according to the instructions on the Carlisle site and then they could not figure out why the finish was not drying. It was one thing after another and it seems like as long as we kept paying our bills, they honestly did not care. What amazes me the most is that they thought they had any chance at all after all the snafus that occurred on this job to ever get any more work from us! Bottom line is that I feel that we did not get what we paid for. For the amount of $ we paid, we should have gotten new secondary bathrooms and new mill work in our bonus room. We will have that done but it won't be by Tenhulzen Remodeling. I think that people should hear the ugly as well as the glowing reports. Honestly? The only reason we hired TR is that they had done a job similar to our 3rd phase job which will be to expand the kitchen and family room. I saw that on their website and thought, okay, they have done it before, so we will go with them. Nope. They lost any further business from us. Oh and if their profits were eaten into? It was because they came back and did things three or four times that they messed up. We have built 3 houses from scratch and have never seen anything like it. Simple things. They could not drive into Bellevue to pick up hardware but had to wait for it to be shipped. Good grief. The thing that makes me the maddest is that they acted like a $500,000+ job (with the possibility of much, much more) was really not a big deal. I don't care if it's a $50 job or a $5,000,000 job, to the homeowner it is important and should be treated that way and the homeowner should be made to feel like they are trying to get it right at all costs right away...not wait until they finally might get an inkling that hey, we might not get any more $ out these people. Perhaps they did not want any more of our work? There has got to be some talent that is good, honest, and hardworking that will do a beautiful job and take pride in their work. Not this outfit.
Description of Work: We hired Tenhulzen remodeling to basically do updating to the flooring, paint, and mill work starting in our master bedroom, and including our 2nd story landing, the hallway down to our bonus room, our 3 secondary bedrooms, and the painting ONLY of the 2 secondary bathrooms. The biggest part of the job was our master bath. I was also not pleased with the golden oak bannister and stair treads on our front stair case. They also did a new fireplace insert in our master bedroom. NO kitchen work. Only the master bath. Let me preface this by saying that I think that each and every person in the Tenhulzen family is a nice person. Would I hire them again to do work in my house? Not if they were the last design/build contractor in the state of WA. As for their design team? Let me say that again, the lady that was on the job is a very nice person. Does she know design? Not what we wanted. Did not have a clue. She may do the glass tile, natural wood, woodsy PNW modern look well, but that is it. Do not ask her to do a traditional east coast, "Something's Gotta Give" type of look. She just does not get it. I gave them a notebook of pages of designs that I like. I tried to explain the look. I thought, surely she must know. Christopher Peacock kitchens are very well known and done all over...that is the look I was going for for this house. This house lends itself to that look. It would look pretty darn funny with bird cage wrought iron balusters and glass tile back splashes...not to mention that, imo, that stuff will look terribly dated in a few years. Like Jeff Lewis on "Flipping Out" said, pick up a magazine people. Travertine has been a tired look for 10 years. I'm sure the white CP kitchen with marble counters and subway tile back splash will look old hat in a few years and kind of is already, but at least it goes with this house and is reminiscent of houses from years ago. It is almost impossible to keep a house looking timeless but I do feel that the design/look should mesh with the house. I kept telling them I wanted this house to be more like the houses in the Broadmoor or the Highlands or Capitol Hill. Trying to tell them something that I liked that maybe they could relate to. I did not want a new money eastsider look. My house does NOT go well with any arts and crafts or craftsman look or any woodsy, more modern slate floors, stacked stone, and glass tile back splash or vessel sink look. I can appreciate that look in the right house. But not this one! Tenhulzen's designer messed up the lay out of the master bathroom so badly that we finally said, enough is enough...bye-bye and do not come back. Not that she did anyway. She barely ever came back unless it was to try to "sell" something else. She never checked on her suggestions or the installations. I e-mailed her a concern I had about the new closet doors that were hung because I felt that something needed to be done as far as a molding or something to make them look better. The response I got was, "Ask the project superintendent." Hello? He was not and is not a designer. Not an aesthetics person. It looked like heck, still looks like heck and this was a job that ended up costing us over $500,000 for mostly paint and flooring! TR did not even want to deal much with the horrible mba lay out. I honestly think they wanted us to just accept it and shut up. Just take our $ and be done. Well... being done took 3 months longer than they said, too. I understand that things happen and I would rather things be right than be rushed through but there was also an awful lot of days that no one came near this house when things could have been being done. An awful lot of days. I can count on one hand the number of times the main project mgr/Tenhulzen brother came out to the job and again, it was constantly, "have you thought about the second phase of your project, yada, yada." NO...get the first one done and at the rate you are going, it will be a 120 degree day in Seattle before YOU get the second phase. Unreal. Totally unreal. There is so much bad that I cannot even begin to know where to start. The supposed "designer" that Tenhulzen insisted was the best for our job, never checked paint, carpet, etc. together. She brought little tiny paint samples and we picked the colors from those. After she left, I went back, got samples of the paint, did swatches and ended up changing 4 out of the 7 colors. She would NOT listen to me to paint my son's room the color it had been previously. We had to have it repainted after it was painted the color she chose.I bought the paint. I bought many different colors for my other son's bathroom. What did we HIRE professionals for? They sure were not much help! This was so unprofessional and we paid her thousands of dollars in addition to what we paid Tenhulzen. The biggest faux pas she did was the master bath! She touts herself as a professional designer? I have never seen such a big mess in my entire life. She had all kinds of towers and none of them were symmetrical and the space where they went was not large enough to warrant the use of towers on the counter tops. One of them did not tie into the soffit at the ceiling. There was no way that it would work. We ended up having to have it cut off. We did not use the other 2 towers. The bathroom design should have been simple and straight forward. I have no idea what she was thinking? It was crazy. She also had separate mirrors instead of one large framed mirror. I like that look with sconces on either side. Of course she did not have it planned that way. Instead she had super cheap lights that were to be mounted through/on the mirror. Well? The worst was that the mirrors were not centered over the sinks! Who does that? It looked horrible. I wanted a pretty elegant but understated bathroom using carerra marble and white subway tile and polished nickel fixtures. I got a hodge podge of calcatta marble, carerra marble, white subway tile, basket weave marble tile with a beautiful border, okay...that was all okay. The tile setter was a master craftsman. Sweet kid. No problems with any of the subs on the job. However, THEN I got the most hideous glass tile in my shower. I am so unhappy with it that I am going to have to spend thousands more to have it removed and have either subway tile and a feature strip of the border from the floor pattern put in the shower or else have the basket weave with the border put where the glass tile is. Very bad design. Very bad. Then there is the issue of the lights/mirrors. When we discovered that the original mirrors were not centered over the sinks to the point that it looked so distracting, my husband told TR the solution would be to do away with all towers and put in a big framed mirror with the lights mounted through the mirror. It was the only logical thing to do. Oh no, the mirrors were already ordered, they were super expensive, blah, blah, blah. Months later they came. By then they agreed that the only solution was to not use any of the towers but put the mirrors centered over the sinks. They were only 2 inches apart. They looked horrible. The finish looked horrible with the polished nickel. The light fixtures that TR and the designer chose were horrendous. Cheap and ugly and pewter. My husband and I went ahead and ordered some Visual Comfort fixtures that were 3 times as expensive and paid retail for them. They are polished nickel. Well, then, all we got was complaining because the light fixtures we ordered were too big. They are not. I could have bought better fixtures than they did at Lowe's. This was for a supposed $93,000 bathroom. The mirrors were hung too low. I have 6-8 holes behind the bathroom mirror where the job superintendent kept measuring wrong for the light boxes for the fixtures. In the end? They ended up conceeding that what would look best was one large mirror trimmed out in painted molding as my husband had suggested 2 months prior!

Response from TENHULZEN RESIDENTIAL
This post was discovered on January 6th, 2012. I immediately requested an audience with the customer, who responded that they would be contacting me upon returning from travels in 2 weeks. At week 3, I replied with a query to meet at their convenience. Having received no response, I am submitting this response without having resolved their lengthy concerns: This was not an uncommon project for our firm. Our customer’s complaints are primarily in regard to our unfortunate mismanagement of resources. From before the onset of construction, it was clear to us that we should never deviate from our defined process. We made the appropriate adjustments and met the customer’s requests, seeing the project through to completion and their apparent satisfaction. The primary issues we experienced were in regard to design, expectations and communication. DESIGN: Staff resources were unable to take on a project of this detail and so it was outsourced to a former employee, currently licensed as an independent Interior Designer. She was distracted by other clients and did not fully grasp the concepts our customer was visualizing. To the Designer’s fault, professionalism was overshadowed by a friendly connection. Throughout design, our customer revered the designer’s efforts and was outwardly excited about the drawings and materials specified. EXPECTATIONS: During construction, the Project Manager received numerous requests to change what had been specified by the contents of the contract documents. The Designer was not much help as she was not going to be paid for the requested changes. The Project Consultant and Project Manager recognized the customer’s disappointments and made significant changes to the design, including exchanging materials, at little or no cost to the customer. The real cost of the changes was in the time to acquire product and schedule trade contractor installation. Ultimately, the project went some 3x longer than scheduled. COMMUNICATION: On a typical project timeline, customers receive at minimum a weekly update. Most often, there is daily communication to alert the customer to anything from parking requirements to personal safety concerns. Due to the nature of the design/expectation disconnect, communication was sporadic. Heavy at times of determining resolve/scheduling/adjusting expectations and non-existent while waiting for products to arrive. During construction, preliminary discussions were underway for 2nd and 3rd phases of work on other parts of the house. To our fault, we were attempting to keep the process moving instead of showing concern for completion of the current phase. Ultimately, we are proud to have completed the project and warrant the quality of its results. This situation has become a learning experience that our team is trained to watch for in the future. By adhering to our process and ensuring that customer expectations are being met, Tenhulzen Remodeling will continue to provide top notch service to our customers. Following any subsequent discussions with this customer, additional comments may be posted on this complaint. Michael Tenhulzen, CGR, CAPS President

They are great. They are probably not the cheapest but they are really good. They are amazing in terms of warranty work. A lot of people get their last check and then it is like pulling teeth to get them to come back. It took about 9 months for the work. They had to pour a new driveway and on and on. We didn't live here at the time; there was no way to live here.
Description of Work: We use Tenhulzen Remodeling for our remodel when we moved in. They added 1700 square feet and remodeled the entire kitchen. They added a new back staircase and turned the existing garage into a guest bedroom. It was a huge remodel. They are actually here now doing some warranty work.

There was about 4 day delay in getting started but once they did start they progressed fairly steadily. Due to a mistake on the measurements of one cabinet, it had to be reordered from the cabinet manufacturer, which meant about 3 days the workers didn't work but over all they were here most days. My orginal existing cabinets were from the same manufacturer and there was a problem because that manufacturer changed its measuring system from metric to english about 5 years ago but never mentioned it to my Tenhulzen contractor. Since my original cabonets were over 5 years old, this error resulted in the new cabinets looking shorter at the bottom near the toe-kick. Tenhulzen offered me two solutions to correct this and I chose the least expensive one. I appreciated the workers making suggestions on doing things differently from spec if it made sense. As an example, the spec called for moving 2 lights but the workers suggested replacing them in the same location with recessed cans instead. An easier and slightly less costly approach. I took their suggestion and love the result. Never before have I worked with contractors that cleaned up after themselves at the end of each work day and never before have I seen a contractor reuse and recycle old materials when possible. After completion I did a walk-through with the lead worker and pointed out 4 minor flaws. He fixed all 4 to my satisfaction the same day. I also like that the company guarantees their work for 1 year after completion.
Description of Work: I remodeled my basement kitchenette. Originally just a simple sink with a cabinet on each side, I added cabinets to the left and right, moved the sink, added a pantry cabinet and 3 upper cabinets. Also created space for a dishwasher.
