The provider was very personable and prompt in giving me his time to estimate the job and to meet with me to pick out the flooring material. As soon as I gave him half of the money for the job he started waffling about the dates. We had a very finite window to get the job done (he was informed of this up front) as this was being planned around a move and this made me nervous. He promised that he would get it done over a holiday weekend, which he did do, but still that left no wiggle room. I was worried about what might be under the carpeting for use as sub flooring and he told me there was 3/4 plywood under the carpet which was fine for laying the floor on top and this was not true. There was particle board on top of plywood under the carpet which should have been removed before the installation. He seemed surprised when I informed him that I had checked. Then he assured me that with the length of staples he was going to use that they would go through the particle board and would fasten into the plywood under the particle board. Well, at that point I wanted him to take up all of the particle board because I had begun reading about flooring and every single source said not to lay solid wood flooring on top of particle board. He was willing to do this, but I got nervous once again and checked the thickness of the plywood under the particle board myself- only 1/2"! When I presented him with this information and said he would have to lay additional plywood down, he said he did not have time to take up the particle board, lay down more plywood and then the flooring before our movers were to arrive. Our carpet had already been torn out at this point and the flooring delivered. We went ahead with the project, against my better judgement. I am sorry we didn't have time to change our minds- I think that the service provider would have done anything we asked, but my issues with him are: 1. He fibbed about what was under the carpeting at the beginning 2. Appears to be "professional", but he did not seem to either know about or care about proper flooring installation practices. 3. The installation was very fast and in a number of places sloppy. He had two other installers with him who did the sloppy work and some of the boards were jammed together too tightly and had to be fixed once we saw the "puckers". On the 1/4 round and other places where there were holes to be filled, a non-hardening putty was used which can still be scraped out with a fingernail two months later. 4. Now we have a whole house of beautiful new hardwood flooring that is already creaking. It does look beautiful, but I am sick over this and am just praying that the floor holds up okay and that there are no major liquid spills. I admit I was lured by the great price, but now wish I had gone with a different, if more expensive, company.
Description of Work: Ripped out old carpet and installed new hardwood a pre-finished flooring.
