I had some issues with the initial job. The manager came out with me (with the issues) and resolved them. I was very happy overall with the job and the price was fair.
Description of Work: 1 entry door to the basement, re screening, 3 new windows in the basement, 2 existing windows capping. He gave me the estimate the same day and it was itemized.

The windows were installed on time and within just one day. We are extremely pleased with the results. We experienced some difficulty with the installation of the sliding doors, and we were initially unhappy. A representative from WIndow Universe visited with us, ordered the correct set of sliding doors, and offered us a discount for our troubles. The installation of the doors went very well, and we are extremely pleased with the quality. What impressed us the most was the level of customer service, as we received a personal visit with a solution to our concerns.

Overall I am very impressed. They came out, did what they said and have stood behind their work. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: I was in the market for new windows and i called a few companies for estimates. One company came out and gave me a very high price on 5 windows at 8000.00 but if I signed right now he would knock it down to 5000.00. It was such a high pressure situation I asked him to leave. So I went to Angie's list and contacted Window Universe. They came out and gave me a fantastic price for 13 window and 1 back door. After giving me all the information and prices, he handed me the package and said the price was good for 30 days and proceeded to pack up his information. No pressure. That was truly remarkable. I decided to go with them and they installed the windows and door in 2 days and the job was awesome. The reason I am writing this review now, a few years later is that I did have a few minor problems of which one was my fault and they came right out and fixed the issue's. But this last time my door hinge was coming off the wood throught no fault of them, the wood is just very old. I called and Karen sent up an appointment within a few days and they came out and fixed my door. They stand behind their work and I just want to give them a 2 thumbs up. I would definetly use them again.

All of our quotes are guaranteed for at least 30 days because we want customers to be comfortable with the idea of working with our company. We don't do the "today" price and the "7-day" price and the "1 year price". Some folks might be surprised by how often those manipulative tactics are used in this business. If you're shopping for windows and doors remember that nothing in this business changes everyday. If the price is good today it will be good tomorrow and it will be good next week. The process of getting a quote was simple, everything was listed out clearly and all the options and styles were clear. The scheduling was easy and the day-of installation went smoothly and the crew left very little mess. Everything was installed neatly and properly by the crew. While they were not master craftsmen, they were hard working laborers that I thought were thoughtful of my needs (being home for the majority of the day) and that did the work quickly and cleaned up after themselves very well. My only real complaint about the windows is that when the crew left after that day of work the final work they performed was to lay down a bead of caulk around the windows that was three and four times larger/thicker than it needed to be. It's better safe than sorry when trying to keep water out of your home, but it looks tacky under a close inspection. Granted, 95% of people that look at the windows wouldn't notice it, but I did and I paid the bill. The only major issue over which I remain disappointed is the trim around the interior of the door that was installed. I had Window Universe find custom trim for me to match the style of the existing trim throughout the rest of the house. We wen through several emails chains back and forth to make sure what we were getting (at a slightly extra charge because it came from a specialty mill) would match, an attention to detail that I appreciated. The trim was installed on the day of installation along with the windows and door, but they were not stained. The raw wood was installed and I was told the stain would arrive several days later and I would have to stain the trim myself. That was not a problem and I didn't mind that, but the real problem arose when the stain proved to be the wrong color. While the can was labeled "caramel," and that was the color I had worked with Window Universe staff to choose to match the rest of the house, what came out of it and went onto the trim was more of a deep chocolate or dark coffee color. I don't know how the mixup happened. It could have been an incorrect evaluation of my needs on their part or their suppliers having made a mistake and labeled the can of stain incorrectly, I will never know and I don't really care. What bugs me still is that I tried contacting the company several times by both phone and email, but didn't get anywhere with my requests. I was told every time that I talked to somebody that the problem was being looked into, but to my knowledge nobody even started the process or repairing or replacing the trim and after several months of calling and leaving messages and talking to someone but not getting anywhere, I gave up. At one point over the phone I even offered to just have them send me the information of the mill where the trim was made and I would buy it and install it myself with some stain from Home Depot, but I haven't gotten that from them yet either. The funny part in this is that the door frame needed tightening after the first few weeks of use and they came right out and fixed it under their 10-year warranty, but this trim issue seems to be outside the scope of their regular issues and they haven't been able to come close to solving it to our satisfaction. I'm happy with the windows and doors, but very disappointed that the final product includes trim that does not even come close to matching with what exists throughout the rest of the house, especially after the pains we took to ensure a close match.

It went great. They were very professional and did a great job. They were able to give me a quote over the phone, then once I agreed (they were the most cost-competitive) they came out and measured it, and then came back and installed it. It took longer than they'd said initially, but it wasn't a problem for me.
Description of Work: The outer glass pane on a triple paned window was cracked, so they ordered a new pane and installed it.

The salesman who came out was very knowledgeable about windows, energy efficiency, sound proofing, alternatives, etc. He was low key - no pressure - and personable. We placed an order with him and then were in touch with a very capable and through back up staff person who asked me for details such as the size of the grids we wanted on our front-facing windows. We ended up ordering one sliding patio door and abut 10 windows of different sizes, including two picture windows. The installation was quick and we have had no problems. We are delighted and would definitely use this company again.

For years I've been putting off replacing the broken windows in my den because I felt intimidated by the whole process of finding a contractor I could trust. Angie's List changed that. I chose Window Universe because of its high ratings and the company more than met my expectations in every way. From the very first call, everyone I dealt with was a competent professional, and the exacting care of the installation team was simply outstanding. I will certainly call Window Universe for future window replacement and recommend them to my friends! The hardest part for me was at the beginning -- making choices from a wide range of window and door options. Salesman A.J. Bennett was immensely helpful at my in-home consultation. He had lots of information and he simply laid out all the choices without pressuring me in any way. At installation when I saw how perfectly the new windows matched the color of the paneling in my den, I was so grateful for his help! In the course of the consultation I realized that this was a great opportunity to replace the front entry door and storm door in my house, and Mr. Bennett helped me choose a style and color that also turned out to be perfect. The measuring appointment was my introduction to the wonderful Alfredo Polanco who was the crew leader for installation. Later I was struck with how much sense it makes for the head of the installation team to do the measuring -- he is the one who has to make sure what is ordered actually fits! I wasn't surprised when Mr. Polanco found lead paint in my 1935 house and I had been advised by Mr. Bennett that lead containment requirements would add a specified amount to the cost of the job. It took about a week longer than I had hoped for the new windows to be ready but this was still well within the estimated time frame. I was kept up to date via e-mail by Caren and when I had to make some changes as to one of the doors, she was able to send me photos which made it easy for me to make choices. Mr. Polanco and his team of Lupe and Jorge returned on November 8th for installation. The windows seemed to go in fairly smoothly but the doors took quite a lot of work for exact fitting. The team were perfectionists!! When the job could not be completed that day, they asked to come back two days later (a Saturday) to finish since they had another job the next day. They put in another full day of work on Saturday. One small task remains -- adding a small strip of wood around the den door -- they had to purchase the wood in the correct stain and will return to install it. These installers set a very high standard -- possibly the best professionals I have ever had working in my home. They were efficient and hard-working and very neat -- everything was in perfect order when they finished. They were also just very nice guys -- helpful and pleasant! The whole thing went so smoothly I could only wonder why I had waited so long to make this big improvement in the house!
Description of Work: 5 wood windows were removed from the den and replaced with double hung vinyl windows. Old door and storm door were removed from the den and the front entry of the home and replaced with new doors and new storm doors.

I contacted and researched a few companies prior to picking Window Universe for my window installation. From the beginning to end the process went extremely well. Upon contacting the company and making my appointment for a sales rep to come to my home, AJ arrived promptly and was professional, no hard sell here just clear and concise and the estimate was right on target from what I had gotten from other companies. I was actually getting other work done in my home and had my general contractor even listen in and go over the contract once AJ left and he thought it all looked good, even he had a moment to look over windows they were offering and thought they would work well. I looked over the other offers and decided to go with Windows Universe and I called them back to get started, AJ came back out and we signed the paperwork and I put the deposit down. They told me it would be 4-6 weeks to get the windows in which was right on target. The ladies in the office called and arranged for the installer to come and do the measuring. Once that was complete, I was emailed ever week with an update on my order. Once my windows were in, we set up a time to have the windows installed and the repairs done. Eric arrived on time, and again friendly and professional - the job was done in a few hours and it turned out great. I couldn't be happier and will contact Window Universe again, when I start replacing the windows upstairs.

The work crew arrived in the time frame described in the email. They saw that we didn't have the blinds down from the windows and would not enter to execute the work until they called the office and received a verbal go ahead. Dos: Find out how they actually intend to remove the windows, and then find out how they actually intend to clean the mess. Don'ts: I took it for granted that they would pull the windows out with the least amount of damage and impact to the surroundings. The process for removing the windows was to lay down a floor covering and bash the windows out with hammers. Glass and window frame fragments flying everywhere. If I had known this to be the case, I would have performed this function myself (just joking here) as wailing away on glass windows with hammers sounds like quite a stress reliever. Dos: Make sure you remove EVERYTHING from the walls. We inadvertently left a small art object (Wooden Chinese Character inside small metal frame value: less than $15) on one of the walls in between two of the living room windows. This was part of a set of 4. Apparently it was damaged and whoever damaged it stashed it in their belongings and later refused to admit it existed (We've bought the set over 6 years ago and the place on the wall where it hung for those years is still curiously vacant except for the outline of the object - I guess we need to clean more often) basically implying to my wife that she was either a liar or crazy as a loon for suggesting it might have existed. Don'ts: I took it for granted that they would leave the place the way they found it. We're still cleaning. Today is 4 days after the install. When I came home that evening the install crew was standing outside getting ready to leave. The crew lead had insisted to my wife that she needed to fill out some survey before they left. Apparently he stood over her until it was completed. I don't know what she wrote. She was exhausted from the experience and really just wanted to get them out of our home. I walked into our front room and the light coming through our new windows showed me quite a few glass fragments still laying on our floor. In the minute I was there, I picked up over 5 fragments of glass. I showed them to the crew lead and he made one of the crew men come in a vacuum the floor. Once they were gone I brought out our own vacuum and began vacuuming each room. It was a 3 hour job and I still missed a few fragments because I woke to find my wife standing in the middle of our master bathroom with blood dripping from her foot at 10pm. She had stepped on a fragment I missed. There is still glass out in the front section. I removed what I found on the front sidewalk as I didn't want neighbor children to accidentally step on something.....My wife spent the following day vacuuming and cleaning the house and our back patio of yet more glass fragments. Dos: Really think about what replacing single pane windows with double pane windows will bo to your blinds. I should have realized that there would no longer be enough room on the interior of the window frame to re-install the blinds. In 2 weeks Next-Day Blinds will be installing new blinds for us. The screw holes for the clamps that held our blinds were covered by the new double pane windows. Now the clamps stick out beyond the frames and that just doesn't look good. Don'ts: Don't expect the crew to understand customer service. They refused to take responsibility for the damaged/missing art object. It still hasn't existed in the spot it hung in for the past 5 years. When I called Ms. Barrera at their office, she promised to return my call immediately. I'm still waiting for that call. Still waiting for an apology from Windows Universe for the actions of their installation crew. I know it will be a long wait. In the end I got what I paid for: New Windows. 11/3/2012: I received both a phone call and an email from the owner of Window's Universe. I appreciated the response and was able to talk directly to the owner and vent. Window's Universe offered and paid for the entire purchase price of my blinds. This was very much a surprise. I appreciate thier response and commitment to customer service.
Description of Work: We sought out Windows Universe based on what we read on Angie's list and from actually visiting the company's location and reading their material. We own an older town home and needed to replace the single pane windows with energy efficient double pane windows. Our home has 10 windows. There were 3 phases to the service: Phase #1: Salesman showed upon time and in detail explained the window and described the next steps in the process which is a measurement, window ordering and installation. Phase #2: A week or so later the company rep showed-up to measure and order the windows. Phase #3: The team showed up to do the actual install as promised on 9 October. In between each of the visits, I received an email from the company with instructions and guidance for installation day. The guidance was in the form of standard cut sheets describing what would be done and giving directions for preparing the area for the work to be done. The instructions contradicted or verbal agreements with both the salesman and second company rep who showed up to measure as each time we informed them that we needed the installers to remove the blinds - while the standard cut sheet instructions placed the responsibility of prepping the area solely on the home owner to include removing blinds and moving furniture etc. I should have seen this as a warning and should have pushed to get the salesman and company representative who measured to put this in writing. I didn't and ultimately take responsibility for the bad experience that followed.

Well that’s an unusual report, but it does bring up a potentially important issue. It’s not common at all, but our crews have accidentally damaged things before. We see all kinds of things in homes and we do our very best to be absolutely as careful as possible. There are a few examples I could offer, but one that comes to mind was a customer who happens to be a relatively well-known radio personality. When we arrived to install her windows we found many pictures of her with famous people on her windowsills. Our team diligently moved all of the pictures to a safe place and put them back when they were done. At the end we got an angry phone call, not because there was a problem with the windows, but because the pictures were not all in the correct places. Some days it feels like you just can’t win. We know it will come as a surprise to most folks, but there have been a few situations where we had photos of preexisting damage to a home only to have the customer accuse us of causing it. Luckily in those cases there were photos, but sometimes there are not. Since we have an unwavering belief in the general goodness of mankind, I’ll be glad to share our policy for dealing with the very very VERY rare situations in which we get conflicting information from an installer and a customer. We just pay for it. We don’t take sides or covey any attitudes. We just pay for it because that is always better for the customer and doing what is best for the customer is our ultimate goal. One could ask if we’ve been taken advantage of because of that policy and the answer would probably be yes, but doing what’s best for the customer is always what guides us, so we do it anyway. If we saw any kind of pattern emerging with a work crew we would certainly deal with that, but we never have. In the entire history of our company we have never had any sort of pattern of problems like that emerge. Our teams are experienced folks and if they see a problem they will call the office before the customer even knows about it. In this case we offered to pay for the customers missing plate and that offer still stands. As for the blinds and any debris, we do try to be as clear with folks as we can. We always ask customers to remove their blinds if they can so the crew can get right to work. This is in the standard information we have offered in writing to every single customer we’ve worked with since we wrote that form back in 2008. If the customer can’t remove their blinds we do it for them, just as we did in this case. This isn’t a big deal and the policy has never been a problem. Regarding any debris, the crews do their best to clean up, but we are often wrapping up late in the day and it is getting dark earlier these days. If any customer would like us to come back by to cleanup anything we missed would be glad to. We really are only a phone call away. Our office is staffed nearly 80 hours per week and we are all here to help. This is also outlined in the info we provide to customers before a project begins. I can’t stress enough that there is absolutely nothing that can’t be fixed, but we need the customer to let us know if they are not feeling great about something. Our customer care line rings directly to a senior manager and we are all here to solve any concerns. Dan Schweihs personally monitored the work and kept in contact with me to make sure all was installed properly. There was an issue with the wrong door and windows being ordered initially, but this was dealt with promptly and professionally by Dan. Even though I had to wait longer than expected to have the work done, the crew worked diligently, were courteous, and cleaned up well afterwards. I couldn't be more pleased with my new door and windows!

This was the best experience. From the estimator, the installer, to the office personnel, I was given the best service and my questions and concerns were always addressed. The installer, Eric, was fabulous. He worked hard and came back several times to fix any issues. One window cracked after it was installed when it was being opened and they replaced it, no charge. I worried that the siding would be wavey like the unprofessional job done on my neighbor's house, and they reassured me that they would stand behind their work. The job looks great!! I had been shopping for windows for over a year and had been discouraged by the deceit of the window selling business. After going through this process I would much rather negotiate with 5 used car salesmen consecutively on the same day, than go through this process again. I brought several companies in for their 90 minute hard sells including Thompson Creek, Long Windows (three times), and See-Thru Windows. All of them used aggressive sales tactics with outlandish pricing that became only marginally affordable with long negotiations. That is, until I brought Window Universe in for an estimate. My salesman (Andy) was prompt, courteous, and low pressure. He didn't waste my time and provided me with up-front pricing from an itemized company printed price list. The prices were comparable to the lowest prices I could negotiate with the other guys and with what I had found online. I felt so good about the process I decided to have them replace all of my gutters and siding too. Again, they provided up-pricing with an itemized price list. I had to wait almost two months for all the windows to be custom manufactured, but it was comparable to what other companies had quoted me on time. The installation was relatively painless, although after the windows were done, I had to wait a week or more before they came back to install the gutters and siding. The issue there was that they left all the materials in my front yard, which I didn't appreciate. I live in a townhouse with a small front yard and the gutters were sprawling into my neighbor's yard, so I moved everything myself into my backyard. In the end I am very happy with the work. The windows look and work wonderfully. My old windows were original 1979 wood framed, single-pane windows, so the comfort level definitely increased. The sliding glass door, gutters, and siding were of similar quality. Very solid. Overall I would give this Window Universe my highest recommendation for new windows, gutters, and siding.

Window Universe offered a window that perfectly matched others in the business condo but worked better. And you know how condo associations can be. They showed up to measure, then again to re-measure because the foreman wasn't completely happy with the first set, on time. Installers showed up on time and installed the new window frame and windows quickly, with little fuss and not too much noise. I worked on my computer a few yards away from the job. This was surprising because the job required completely removing an entire dual (double) side-swing window set, including frame, not just replacing one glass. Other window companies' proposals were cheaper, but I' glad I spent the extra $200 or so for Window Universe.
Description of Work: Unusual windstorm blew side-opening, swinging window with broken lock open and smashed it against the building. The entire dual (double) side mount window had to be removed and replaced as the original window manufacturer had gone out of business.

After paying a $1500 deposit, they came out and measured. The first time was understandable (May 8th) , but they called back a few days later ( May 31st) and said the manufacturer needed a template for the window. Finally a few weeks later (July 18th) they said they needed another template. This time the technician who showed up and stayed for 3 hours asked to borrow my latter (again) and also ask for card-board paper to create a proper template. I did my best to provide sturdy paper. A few days went by and I called the main office to check the status of the window. At that time I was told the window should arrive by Aug 15th. I called today and was told it could be another week before they receive the window from the manufacturer. I don't like giving negative reports but I signed the original contract in April. All I hope is that they are able to complete the project as soon as possible and do a great job.
Description of Work: Signed a contract on April 29 2012 to have them install a new window on the second floor front room.

Oh no! This one is kind of a long story, so to be brief I can offer a little insight into what caused the very long delay and how we resolved the situation. This customer had a very unusually shaped window. It was a bit of a cross between what we can an eyebrow window and an ellipse window. There is nothing we can't do when it comes to residential windows so we were confident that it could be handled. Our manufacturing partner struggled with the design of the window based on the initial measurements so they asked us to return for more detail. We ended up needing to do that twice which is exceedingly rare, but it did happen in this case. At the end of the day one of the owners of our company drove down to the plant in North Carolina to personally pickup this window in order to meet the customers timeline. That was a 10 hour round trip, but we were glad to do it to get the project done on time. The installation went smoothly and the end result looked great. We certainly do wish the project had been completed sooner, but with a window as unusual as this one there was an exceeding long lead time. We ask any member thinking about a project like this to read all of our nearly 100 reviews and the personal responses to get a feel for the way we operate. Thanks!

AJ showed up on time and was extremely professional and competent. This was the easiest house purchase I ever made. The salesman was very easy going so I did not have to listen to someone bad mouthing other companies (much appreciated). The company arranged for someone to come and measure the windows. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We brought 9 replacement windows. Switched some sliders to double-hung. I had looked at other companies but this company had the best salesman. There was no pressure, no bait and switch, etc. They had a list with the prices so I did not need to negotiate for a lower price. I had looked at other companies and these prices were very fair. It took a couple of weeks for the windows to be made at the factor but that was not a problem. Once the windows came in I arranged for the installation. There was a little problem (my fault) with the shades in the living/dining room but the installers talked me through it. I had to order some replacement parts from the shade company but as soon as I called Window Universe they came out two days later. The two installers came in one of the 100 degree days - felt bad for them. They worked about 5 hours getting the windows in - they cleaned the inside and outside of the house (even brought their own vacum cleaner). The windows look great and my wife is very happy.

Overall I was very satisfied with Windows Universe. The sales pitch was thankfully not super long and had zero pressure to buy. Just felt like I was talking to a friend. I especially like how they give you a breakdown of every part of their estimate. The other window companies that we had gotten estimates for just give you 1 lump sum for the estimate. Window Universe gave us a breakdown by part, labor & any other fees. Definitely made me feel more comfortable with them and that nothing was being hidden from me! Their sales rep was very informative and very knowlegeable. The scheduling of our install hit a few snags, but, those were not anything that any of us could have controlled. I do wish that Windows Universe provided better updates as we went along. The 2nd time our install had to be rescheduled (1st was due to weather, 2nd was due to the previous customer's site had an issue that had to be corrected before they could move on to my job), I didn't get a call until an hour after I was expecting them to show up (but, at least they called me and I didn't have to call them first. So, I can't be that upset about this). They came the next day (and worked their butts off on the hottest day we've had yet this year!). Their installers are wonderful people, incredibly friendly and very hard workers. Another added bonus is that the installer is the same person who had come to do the measurements, so, you knew he was taking responsibility for that job from beginning to end! We got our windows right before the big storm that moved in this weekend and I couldn't hear any of the 80 mph winds or heavy rain while inside (old windows rattled with the slightest breeze and sounded like they would break in with heavy rains). So, from what I can tell so far, the quality is great and I have no complaints there either! Overall, I would definitely recommend Window Universe as a company to get your windows from. I know I'll be recommending them to friends if anyone ever needs windows!
