A few months ago my Dell G3 laptop began just "stopping." No BSOD. No error message. Just dead. So I contacted Dell tech support, who had me "update" my BIOS (to the same BIOS that was already installed). That seemed to work for a couple of weeks, the the G3 began stopping again. So again I contacted Dell tech support. They recommended a factory reset using their SupportAssist OS Recovery tool, which I did. The Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery tool asked if I wanted to backup my data before reformatting the hard drive, which I did, following their process. After a couple hours, my data was supposedly backed up, and the factory reset began, which also took about an hour. After the factory reset, the SupportAssist OS Recovery tool did not ask about restoring my data, as the Dell procedure claimed it would, so I contacted Dell tech support. The tech "took over" my G3 laptop and found my backed up data, but was unable to restore it. After a week of back-and-forth with Dell tech support, they "elevated" my case to a "level 3" whatever that is. To me, it was just double-talk to stall for time because another 2 weeks passed without my data being restored. At this point, Dell tech support was not even answering my emails or replying to my chats. So I contacted the Better Business Bureau and explained the situation. Long story short, after a few weeks of back-and-forth with Dell via the BBB, Dell's answer was that is was my fault the data could not be restored and that they were not in any way responsible. The BBB, which turns out to be powerless, closed my case as being unresolved. So here I am with a G3 laptop that I don't even know if Dell actually fixed the stopping problem, and all my data is gone. And for this I paid an extra $499 for premium tech support.

Description of Work: Having owned a Dell desktop for many years, when I recently decided to purchase a laptop, I did so from Dell. I've had the laptop now for a few weeks, and today I decided to see what whould happen when I disabled the touchpad. (Keep in mind, first laptop, first touchpad instead of mouse). I followed the instructions to disable the touchpad, which worked as described, then discovered that this would not only disable the 'enter' function as I expected, but it also disabled the ability to move the cursor. So, obviously, I needed to enable the touchpad again. Being greener than grass, I tried every 'F' key as well as any function still possible to perform without moving the cursor. All to no avail. So, I called the Dell support line. I provided the model of laptop I bought and the problem I was having and asked what key or keys I might use to enable the touchpad. The first thing I was told by the Dell technician was that I needed to attach a mouse to my laptop. So, I removed the mouse from my desktop and then told him that mouse had a pin and not a usb connection. It took a while to convince him that there was no place to plug this mouse into my laptop. He then told me I had to go and buy a mouse with a usb connection. When I suggested there must be an easier fix, he had me remove the laptop battery, then reboot and get to a screen that had the option to return to a previous configuration. This only made matters worse, at which point he tried to sell me a service contract for just under $300. So - I hung up, took the laptop to a pc repair shop in a nearby mall where they enabled the touchpad by simply PRESSING FN AND F3! I will still have to pay for the additional problem caused by the technician's other process of restoring to a previous configuration. The lack of knowledge exhibited by the Dell tech is absolutely astounding. No more Dells for me!. .

I will never buy another computer from them again. The computer is now broken and their service after the sale has been horrible. They just throw you the computer and don't care after that. It's kind of a rip off because they don't help you with anything.
Description of Work: I bought my computer from them and they delivered and installed it.

In this particular case, I had forgotten that I had purchased the extended warranty and went ahead and had an outside company perform the repairs. Later my wife reminded me that I had the extended warranty. I contacted Dell to see what they could do. After some back and forth phone calls and emails they finally decided to reimburse me for the $350 I had spent on the repairs, which I thought was really fair. Since that experience, I have very recently purchased a high end Dell laptop and a high end Dell desktop and purchased the extended 4 year warranty extension for both. I think this report should be in the warranty category and not repair.
Description of Work: My Dell laptop computer had a hard disk failure in June 2006 and a keyboard failure, which Dell fixed free of charge on the four year extended warranty I purchased when the computer was originally acquired.

Job 1: I tried trouble shooting online with dell, but I preferred a person to answer specific questions. They only provide hourly tech support at a pay rate so I had to pay for a few hours of tech. support by phone. They walked me through removing software and re-installing software, backing up files, etc. which is somewhat frustrating. Job 2: bought a computer and flat monitor ... screen then started to act up and flicker and lose colors etc. called support and they felt it might be lose wires etc asked me to ship.. i did.. they fixed or replaced it.. but it works great now.
Description of Work: Job 1: I had trouble with the software on my computer. It kept freezing when I'd run certain programs ($125). Job 2: replace/fix screen of my computer. sent to the company. they returned it by mail($75).
