Description of Work: I needed the handrails along the stairwell restained and the trim work surrounding the stairs repainted. The painters thoroughly covered the floors and stairs prior to starting. The men did a great job of sanding down the handrails and restaining it to match the wooden treads. The trim work was painted by hand and the paint lines were very precise where it met the treads. | |My overall experience was great and I will call them for any additional work in the future.

Description of Work: I hired Southern Painting to paint the interior of my house, including my 2-story entry as well as some sheetrock repairs. Charlie gave me a very fair estimate & even offered design assistance in color selection. The entire crew was wonderful, friendly, conscientious, respectful & thorough. I am OCD on color transition from ceiling to wall and am thrilled that I have no issues! I did find 2 small areas that were missed & they promptly returned to take care of them. I look forward to working with them again on the exterior of my house.

Description of Work: Did outside painting and most of the walls inside the 2-story house. They left paint splatters not only on the carpet but woodwork and furniture. I told manaager and received a $200 discount, but didn't see much of the paint splatters until later. I could probably have gotten more of a discount if had noticed the mess earlier. The painters were inexperienced and poorly supervised by the fellow in charge.

Firstly, let me say that the painter who painted this customer’s house has been working with Southern Painting for over 17 years. He is neither inexperienced or sloppy, and he is constantly receiving positive feedback from clients. We do not need to be on the job supervising him full time, he is able to supervise himself. The customer treated the painter as a subordinate, and although she had never hired a professional painting company, she insisted on standing over him as he worked and telling him how to do the job he does so well. The painter still did a great job for her. When the job was done, the customer claimed that he had made a mess, but that she had already cleaned it up. Also, she had told us she was replacing the old carpet (very old,) but we covered the carpet, furniture, and floors as we always do. Even though we did not see the mess the customer claimed, we offered her 200.00 dollars for her trouble of cleaning up, which she accepted. We have told the customer that her three year warranty is still in effect and that we will clean, repair, or pay to clean and repair any issues. She however says that she is too busy to have us back in the home, and that she will change her review here if we will “mitigate” the supposed damage, which we still have not seen. In other words, the customer will take down the review if we will send her more money. We tried to help this customer and did the job at the lowest cost possible due to their expressing that they could not afford the work. The customer is a senior citizen who needed a lot of help, there was actually water dripping into the home and we wanted to help with the needed repairs. A general contractor would have charged three times what we charged her to repair her rotting house. It really is a shame when you try to help someone and they attempt to take advantage of you. We stand behind our warranty and will fulfill it, but she has not allowed us to even see the damage she is claiming. We do take customer reviews seriously, but we will not be black mailed or intimidated in any way by online reviews. Sincerely, Thomas Windham

Friendly service from both the owner (Thomas) and the crew. Prompt and flexible response - they fitted our realtively small job in at short notice alongside another smaller job they had going. The price was 60% of that quoted by the painting provider we have used previously and the work was indistinguishable in quality. Job was completed rapidly. Would not hesitate to use them again in future, very happy with the service. My neighbours (both realtors hence they know the good value when they see it) requested a quote from the company on the same day we had our work completed and accepted on the spot.

We have had used Southern several different times, in different homes. They did a repaint on the inside of my mother's home when we were setting the house up to sell. They also painted the outside patio cover. They painted the interior of my home and were wonderful when my husband accidentally picked out the wrong color. We had to stop painting and the foreman on the job had to run to purchase paint. The only extra charge to the job was the new paint.... They did great work at the ceilings and the baseboards. They wiped the walls down prior to painting. I have referred them to several people and they have all been very pleased with the outcome of the jobs done. I have further painting coming in the near future and I will be contacting them. NOTE--not sure of all the dates of contact, but all have been within the last 18 months.

They did a great job painting the living room. But when they came back to paint cabinets in the master bath, they were sloppy and unprofessional. We did part of the work in the bath to help save them time, and to make the project go faster. When we confronted Thomas, the head guy, about wanting a discount for the bathroom work (poor workmanship plus we did some of the advance work) he went ballistic on us. He was very defensive, rude, and unprofessional. He acted like a spoiled kid who always gets his own way, but goes nuts when things do not go his way. No more - we are done with this service provider.

I should have seen a big red flag when his customer told me that she fired her previous painter after they had almost finished and told me she did not pay them any money at all. The entire room had been painted in two coats and looked pretty good, but she seemed very proud that she got out of paying them by firing them at the end of the job. The customer hired me to paint her living room and to paint the new cabinets which would be installed by a contractor who was remodeling her bathroom. When we got there, she had fired her bathroom contractor as well, and he brought the wrong size cabinets, so we were unable to do the work for her until she got the right sized cabinets. To make a long story short, after bending over backwards for this customer and making 2 additional trips, she had the nerve to say she would pay us half of what we agreed upon after the work was done. When cabinets are raw wood, most of the work is in the preparation. It takes one coat of primer and two coats of oil based enamel paint. Once my painters had applied the first coat of primer and were drying it with a heat gun, she asked them to leave. Apparently, she thought she could easily apply a final coat of paint herself and thus save some money. What she did not know was that primer dries very rough and must be re sanded prior to painting. Oil paint is also very tricky to work with. So, after failing at finishing her cabinets, she called me back demanding that we again drop everything and run over for a third trip to finish her cabinets. Now we had to sand down what she had already done and apply two more coats. She also asked my painters to do some work that was not even on the contract. The bill was only 570.00 for painting her cabinets in 3 coats. She did do a little painting on 1 coat, but the work she did actually cost us more time than it saved. I told her that even at full price I would be paying for the materials and giving all of the remaining money to the guys because it was not fair to them to have to come out 3 times for that little money, and that after I paid for my insurance (we carry a 1 million general liability insurance at all times to protect our customers, and it is charged as a percentage of each job’s labor cost), that I would be losing money. At that point her husband said it was my own problem, he didn’t care if I lost money as long as he saved a little. The customer agreed the work was done well, they just want to save money. The irony is, this is how we feed our families, but to them it’s just a game. This customer has a habit of firing contractors at the end of the job to try and save money. I have never in my life been so insulted, or seen such a scene over trying to save a couple hundred bucks. (deleted member name) and her husband actually wanted me to pay her to paint her cabinets, which is what I did after paying for the labor and materials. I would warn any contractors against ever working for these people. Now they are trying to bring me down on the internet because I told them I had never seen such a ridiculous spectacle and that if they were having trouble with every contractor they hired, it was probably not the contractor’s fault. I would have liked to have told them a lot more, but I didn’t. I was professional with them to the end. The customer agreed the work was done properly, they just are not accustomed to paying the price they agreed upon. The great news for me is that we are in demand. We have served over 75,000 customers, over 300 in Katy last year alone, and 99% of them are advocates for us that love us. That is why our business is growing faster than we can handle. We have work booked up for over 2 months right now and are bringing in and training yet another team of service minded painters this week. We have just opened up a store front in old Katy, and I can’t go anywhere without people waiving me down and shaking my hand. Thanks to our great customer base, we will be OK!
