heating & air conditioning/hvac, plumbing, drain cleaning

We purchased this home in September, 2011 and moved into it on October 1, 2011. The previous homeowner had contracted The Drain Surgeon to perform various heating, A/C, and plumbing repairs as a result of a home inspection we had performed prior to purchasing the house. The previous owner pre-paid all of the repairs. When we moved in the previous owner gave us the receipts for all repairs performed. One of the receipts for The Drain Surgeon stated that the part needed for the heating system was ordered, would be in October 7th, and that he would return on October 8th to complete the repair. After October 8th I contacted the contractor (Josh) to inquire about the status. He stated that the part still wasn't in, but that he would check on it and would be out the following day to complete the repair. He never showed up or called to say he wasn't coming. That began a cycle of repeated calls to Josh, always followed by repeated promises to be out "that day" or "the next day" to finish the repairs. He never showed, nor did he ever call to say he would not be there. At one point we had the system inspected by our propane servicer, who "red-tagged" the system because the vent piping was off - as a result of the uncompleted repairs. We are now in the middle of November and still do not have heat. Repeated calls to Josh have always resulted in promises to finish the repair, which are never upheld. At some point Josh told my wife that there was a part needed that had not been paid for - even though the receipt shows that the entire repair was pre-paid. My wife offered to meet Josh at Lowe's to buy the part - he agreed, but never showed up. He finally sent his son out - under protest - to re-attach the vent piping, but told my wife he wasn't coming back out or sending anyone else out to finish the repair because he was tired of the phone calls and "demands" to complete the work he had already been paid for. He once swore "on my children's heads" that he would be out, only to no-show again - and when my wife called him and reminded him of HIS promise, he got belligerent and refused to ever come out again. We have a 6 year old, and no home heating. I'm only thankful that the winter has been fairly mild so far, though we did have to purchase over $200 of electric heaters for a couple of the colder nights / mornings we've had. We have now submitted this item for a repair under our home warranty, which will cost us at least $60. Small price, considering the importance of having a heating unit, but VERY irritating since this repair wasn't our responsibility and it had already been paid for. Josh has proven unreliable, untrustworthy, and in my opinion a thief - since he has refused to complete services he has already been paid over $600 to do. I would NEVER call this company again and urge anyone thinking of using his services to quickly find someone else. Since submitting this report I have had another heating / A/C company come out and inspect the system. Turns out the gas control valve didn't need replacing, just needed to have a line cleaned out. Cost me $60, but at least we have heat now. As it happens, the repair guy that came told me that the vent piping on the system was the incorrect size - it had 3" piping when it should be 4" but that Josh's son had "jury-rigged" it with tape. Considering this is the exhaust for the system - containing carbon monoxide - I don't find this a very safe situation. The technician checked for leaks but said he didn't find any - however he recommended that it be replaced with the proper sized piping. They will send me an estimate for that, but expect it to be around $250. More money out of my pocket to fix a system that The Drain Surgeon was tasked with (and paid for) bringing it up to code. So I would have to add that in addition to Josh being unreliable & untrustworthy, he's incompetent - he didn't diagnose the system correctly which cost the previous owner over $650, and installed incorrect vent piping which presents a potential life-threatening safety hazard.
Description of Work: The Drain Surgeon was contracted to perform heating, A/C, and plumbing repairs by the previous owner as a result of inspection performed prior to us purchasing the home. The repair in question was to replace a faulty gas control valve on the main home heating forced air unit.
