I called TI Landscaping and met with its owner, David Wilcox, the same day. I wanted an underground irrigation system installed and my medium size back yard landscaped to be entirely maintenance free with no grass. David returned the next day with a very impressive landscaping plan, so I looked no further. Within a few days, Jason Wilcox, David's son and business manager, and his crew installed the irrigation system in one day. I was surprised that all of the trenches were dug by hand and Jason explained that that method saved the grass. Indeed, when they finished, it was not even noticeable that a shovel had even been in the front yard. A lot of attention in placing the sprayers was given to which areas of the yard had mostly shade or mostly sun, as well. The next week, David and his crew started the landscaping of the back yard, which was completely finished in three partial days of work. It was a pleasure to watch these guys work their trade and again, certain parts of the yard was dug with shovels to make sure all of the grass roots were removed. Everything was left very neat and clean when they left for day. All that was left behind was the beauty of the results of their labor. David's design gave me exactly what I asked for and I am so pleased with my new back yard oasis. David and Jason were very responsive to my calls and questions and I would not only use them again, but would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a hassle free landscaper.
With no one living there to water consistently in these desert-like summers, any old yard, much less a newly remodeled one, wouldn't have a chance to survive. Besides putting in the new irrigation, TI became my lawn maintenance company, too. Always reliable. No matter when I show up, the yard is groomed well and no mess is left. They have a reasonable price for maintenance. When I said I wanted to and quot;fixand quot; the grass, a hopeless case, really, TI rightly recommended I install irrigation during this yard face lift during this opportunity while the grass would be torn out. And the ability to water via timer, whether I was there or not, would insure the new sod would thrive while I was away.
TI is organized as a father/son-as-owners business. The morning work was to begin, they brought a full team to work on re-vamping the front yard, including laying the new convenience of irrigation. (Hopefully, sometime this summer (a year later) I'll get the back yard done too.) Both men offered ideas from their experience for ease of use, appearance, efficiency, as well as minding the expense. They kept me informed at every step, asked for my input, solicited my approval after each phase and left the job with a sharp looking lawn. I've received complements on how the front yard looks several times, even from those who don't know the history. As for the irrigation in particular, much attention was given to strategical use of the nozzles to use the most direct path and least amount of trenching for getting to any particular location, installing the lines and nozzles to become as invisible as possible- all without slighting how well the irrigation will help maintain the lawn.
Personally, both owners are easy to talk to, patient, can/will explain anything you'd like to know. They're genuine in their desire to please both the homeowner and themselves, their own measurement of a job well done. They show a great deal of pride in proper planning, execution and finished product. The son supervised the irrigation project while the dad supervised the landscaping. While they have different personalities, (and ages), they work well together, combining talents and points of view to do the job well.
While in Houston my schedule can change daily. TI has been accommodating and understanding. If the job at hand has required more time (like fetching additional materials), I've been notified. Don't be afraid to ask questions, they will be answered. Just know that the owners aren't necessarily proactive in interacting with you. Their mind and focus is on the job at hand. I've always been addressed with respect and kindness.
Over the past year and a half+ I've dealt with many other contractors for all kinds of jobs at this home. Way to frequently I've been treated as though my head was storage Dead Air Space. One could assume that's because, I'm a lone, older woman who's taking bids to properly attend to my dad's house's needs which include HVAC, plumbing and electrical. and quot;ya, know, man-stuff, sugar.and quot; I've had contractors over-sell how much needs to be done thinking they can shove an over priced bid/bill in my face which I'll surely go for. It's very frustrating-even demeaning. I've stopped a couple in mid-sentence to say, 'no thanks.' One, who was more a father disguised as a contractor, who wouldn't/ couldn't shut up while lecturing me for 20mins on what I should do with my dad's estate based on what he did with his parents. As if it were his bees-wax. Besides, I've already been through grade school. With TI, I NEVER experienced any similar, negative interaction. They consider the client (me) and TI (them) to be partners on the project with equal, mutual respect. As a result , they listen. No preaching. No scamming. The flip side to that, which is also important; they've never hesitated to share ideas that wouldn't occur to me since I'm not a landscaper. There's no pushing to use their ideas whether design or function unless- they're trying to save you grief down the road. They're not gonna let you hang yourself. I just appreciate the straight, plain information so I can make informed choices.
While I thought I would be ready to have the backyard irrigation done right after the front was complete, I was injured, therefore, I had to postpone developing a plan indefinitely. TI most likely was planning on having that business booked. Yet, they fully understood and made me feel relaxed about having to ask for the timeline change at distinct disadvantage to them since they's invested in some sample plants for my review. Either in the field (my yard) or in the office (billing, changes in service requirements, etc) I have found TI to be polite and responsive.
When I first engaged TI, I had the impression they were a small-middle-sized operation for Houston. However, I've never seen them understaffed or fail to appear. Or, for that matter, to try to take on a side job from me that's not 'their thingand quot;. Meaning they weren't one of these companies trying to be everything to all people just to get the paycheck.
My biggest joy- yes, that's the right word, derived from the business relationship. It's clear to me they enjoy their profession and take great pride in a job well done. I like that. Plus, I've needed reliability and flexibility under my circumstances. They provide both. Luckily, I immediately felt the attitude from these two- they consider clients their business-friends which has worked well, doesn't hurt that in return, I try to treat them like friends with whom I can conduct serious business. Of course, there is no guarantee everyone will end up meshing like that.
(My report may sound too good. I'm not an owner, not a real estate agent or even in any business related to landscaping. I'm not a relative. What I am is, grateful for relief from what was a mounting stress for me-taming a neglected lawn with a dictating HOA and unhappy neighbors! So, let me be clear: I never met either father or son previous to my first call. I got their name as a referral from another company who's trailer and phone number I saw while driving. I was getting antsy about finding a landscaper and saw the trailer near our neighborhood. In an earlier experience, a landscaper to whom I was referred before TI was ridiculously over priced, made his own schedule and never completed the job, arguing that what I wanted and quot;didn't really make a difference or need to be done.and quot; He didn't want to trim the ground cover to the edge of the walk. and quot;it's okay laying over the driveand quot;. Grrr. So this company I tracked down from their trailer sign didn't handle my neighborhood. They gave me TI's number. They gave me peace of mind.)
Note: it's been so long I'm not 100% certain that the irrigation part of the job is exactly the price represented above. I do know that like any other company TI deserves and needs to make an earned profit, yet I've never felt taken advantage of in this regard. It has been a Godsend to be able to rely on them when I live so far away and when I am in Houston, have so much on my mind.
If they say they can do your irrigation job, then they can. They'll let you know if that's not the case.
