Remarkable Painting
About us
Mark looks forward to working with you, so you, too, can sing the praises of the Remarkable Painting Experience. Mark says, "I think the key to building one of the most successful painting companies in Dallas is the integrity of all who are involved. I feel there are two major components to any successful paint job. The first is the expertise of the painters, which is evident when the job is complete. The second is the systems and processes of the paint company- this determines the overall experience that the customer is going to have." *Not Affiliated with Southern Painting*

The exterior was pressure washed and scraped as quoted. Mark quoted that the job would take 4 days. Upon arrival of the 2 man crew, neither of the men had been instructed on what tasks needed to be performed. I contacted Mark to make sure that his guys were properly informed of the tasks at hand. He ensured me that everything would be taken care of and I would be absolutely thrilled with the outcome.
On day 2, I received a phone call from my wife that indicated that the crew would be finishing up at the end of the day (originally told it was going to take 4 days) and they wanted to get paid. I left work early to inspect the job. Upon arrival, one of the crew members began rambling on about how he needed to get paid since Mark's payroll didn't come around until the following week. Somehow this was my problem. The work had not been completed. A few minutes later, after speaking with Mark, the crew member informed me that they were going to change their policy and I did not need to pay them until the job was complete. (Strike 1).
The next day, I AGAIN left work early to inspect the job. They ensured me it was complete (1 day early). I arrived to find the drywall repair was horrific. The indentation where the hole originally had been was blatant (Strike 2). I could have done a better repair than this (and have by the way). Upon further inspection of the exterior, it was found that flashing had not been painted (which is a prevalent feature throughout the entire neighborhood). In addition, there was over-spray on the brick (Strike 3) that had not been cleaned off! To the crew member's surprise, I was not happy with the job that had been done. He assured me that he would return the next day and redo the job. I contacted Mark immediately and he assured me that everything would be taken care of and that it was customary for flashing to be painted even though the crew member had told me it wasn't. In addition, I asked that either Mark or his foreman would inspect the job and ensure that everything had been completed. He assured me that they would. I wrote them the check despite the work not being complete - HUGE MISTAKE.
The crew returned the next day, painted 2 pieces of flashing (not ALL of the flashing) and repaired the botched drywall repair. Since they were already gone by the time I got home, I was not able to walk through the job with them. I do not know if the job was inspected by Mark or his foreman because they never contacted me after I paid them.
Trash and old caulking that had been removed were left all around the perimeter of the home. Furthermore, the floor of my garage below where the drywall had been repaired was covered in paint splatter and bedding compound (Strike 4). The entire garage was left covered in compound dust (Strike 5). The pavement outside the garage was stained with paint (either spilled or from the spray gun) (Strike 6). Flashing that was supposed to be painted wasn't and over-spray was not removed from the brick in a few locations (Strike 7).
I attempted to contact Mark immediately (every other time he promptly answered the phone). I left a voice mail on 2/13/15 and have not heard from him since.
I cleaned up the mess myself. I guess in today's world, it's okay to be satisfied with a contractor who only does the job they promised to 90%. I didn't ask for a discount, just for them to do the work I paid for.
Once we decided on paint color for the walls and trim he had his project manager come out and meet with us and schedule the job. The guys that came out and did the work were very polite, hard workers and cleaned up after themselves. I was surprised the job only took 1 1/2 days...and it looks awesome. After the workers were done the project manager came out to give a final inspection and make sure we were happy with the work and then asked to be paid.
I am VERY VERY pleased with Mark Kinser and his crew (Remarkable Painting). I will be having more painting work come up for my house this next year and I will be making only 1 phone call-to REMARKABLE PAINTING!
At the end of the day, they did a great job painting and staining the house. I may use them again but I'd prefer they show up when agreed on vs. when they decide to do it. I received an invoice for painting the house but not the fence.
There was some miscommunication on when the workers would come and start the repair, and one of the work crews did leave cigarette butts around the work area. However, these were very minor issues to me, especially considering the great job they did. I would definitely consider using them again.

In the past three years, I have had portions of my home's interior painted four different times by three different companies from Angie's List, including this most recent experience with Remarkable Painting. The actual quality of the painting -- that is, the actual application of the paint on the walls and how those walls actually look in the end-- was pretty much the same from all 4 companies. The owner comes in and quotes the job, then the crews come in and paint the walls. The first 3 companies were pretty much at the same price level. Mark Kinser's Remarkable Painting (formerly Southern Painting) was significantly pricier on each bid, including this latest one.
The first company I hired, two years ago, did good work applying the paint and covering surfaces prior to painting, but I mistakenly trusted the owner to choose colors for my home. I left her with the keys and returned to my home a week later horrified with the very pale, pastel colors she chose. Each room looked dreadful. Embarrassed and mortified, but unwilling to confront her, I ate the cost and immediately hired another painting company to re-do all of her work.
The company I hired to re-do her work was very good. They covered all surfaces and the quality of the application of paint on the walls was the same as every other company. The owner was a delight. He provided excellent customer service and was very personable. He provided expert color suggestions. I trusted him wholeheartedly and had him over to paint three more times after that. The third and last time, it seemed as though he was more concerned with getting one of his "exterior crews" out of the bitter cold and indoors at my place than he was with providing a quality job. The crew that he assigned to my home that last time around did a terrible job with prep work. No drop cloths, no plastic, no covering anything, despite assurances from the owner, on numerous occasions, that they would cover everything. Popcorn was removed and ceilings were floated without ANY protection. Plaster was everywhere -- in those rooms and elsewhere throughout my home. So much slung plaster was on the walls that they had to be painted, though that wasn't originally part of the job. The wood floors were water damaged in a few areas because there were no floor coverings when the popcorn was sprayed with water. I came close to firing this company before the owner finally took charge and assigned a more careful crew to finish the job.
I decided that the next time I hired a painter, it would be Mark Kinser's Remarkable Painting. I knew their prices were considerably higher, but I bought into the sales pitch and idle promise that his service comes with a "foolproof" one-hour consultation with an expert color specialist, and I understood that he and his crews would be prompt and professional and take good care of my home. My goal was to make this job as painless as possible even though it meant that I would have to pay a considerably higher price for the work. I feel a little duped and foolish in the end.
The "color specialist," Ron, came to my home for about 20 minutes to help me select a color for the primary, most visible rooms in my home. I knew the gist of what color I wanted and told him so -- an ivory or putty color to approximate a certain set of pillows on my sofa. The specialist (and, previously, the owner) told me that my idea wouldn't work well in my home. I trusted their guidance. So, when Ron arrived, he set right to work focusing on my existing trim color and the color of my furdowns to choose the perfect, complimenting color. When he showed me Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter on the color strip, I thought it looked like a great choice. He held it up to various spots in the room and pointed out how well it complimented each and every area. Perfect! I was so happy to have this process done so quickly and by such an expert!
Fast forward to a week later when the paint actually went on the walls... I spent the majority of the day out running errands. When I returned towards sunset, the Revere Pewter looked like a warm, beige-y gray on my walls. I felt pretty good about it. I trust that Ron or Mark showed up at my home a time or two while I was gone to oversee things, but I'm not sure about that.
That evening, after the sun set and I was left with only artificial light in my house, panic set in as I realized that I was once again in the same boat I was in two years ago when I HADN'T paid for a color specialist! My walls were now a ghastly, pale, icy blue!! In a home that is filled with warm beiges, browns, creams and a reddish-toned wood floor. It looked horrible!
I called Ron and told him. He suggested that I have a few glasses of wine to make it look better. When I didn't see the humor in the joke, he told me they could repaint it for 60% of the first price since I'm the one who chose the color. I wasn't satisfied with that answer, so I called Mark, the owner. First he asked, "Ron brought you over some color boards, didn't he? Didn't you see that pale blue color when you looked at the boards at night?" After I said, "No, Ron didn't bring me any color boards. He was certain that color was perfect for me, so he didn't see the need, and I trusted his expertise," Mark was very reassuring and told me they'd work things out. I trusted him again. I was wrong again.
The next morning, Ron showed up at my house, sulking, with about 6 pre-made color boards that I'm certain they just had lying around. They were colors that we did not discuss, nor were they tailored to my house in any way. The first thing he said when he walked in the door was that Mark said to tell me that I'd have to pay 60% of the original price if I wanted to have the room repainted. He proceeded to act sulky, passive-aggressive, and put out that he had to re-do this process with me. When none of the pre-made color boards worked in my home, he directed me to meet him at Sherwin Williams. We each tried to pick colors from there. He made two painted swatches for me there, but when I got home, neither of them worked. Back to the drawing board.
Meanwhile, things got weirder and I strongly perceived that Ron wasn't being truthful with Mark or with me. Maybe Mark wasn't being truthful either. Things weren't adding up. Mark tried to get me to continue to work with Ron; Ron dropped me like a hot potato. The painting crew continued to treat me with great respect. I have the sense that they had seen all of this before.
For the next week, Mark and Ron repeatedly applied pressure to have me pay them 60% of the original job on top of the first price. I felt that this time around, I had consciously paid a higher price just to avoid this scenario and was unwilling to pay extra for Ron's mistakes. When I said, "Mark, this was not my fault. Ron didn't do the job he was supposed to do. My mistake was in trusting him as your color specialist," Mark said, "I prefer not to call it fault. I prefer to call it his 'responsibility.' Fault is blaming him. Responsibility encourages him to take ownership." Whatever. Point is, I resented the repeated pressure to pay another $880 to repaint my icy blue walls after consulting with Mark's supposed color specialist for the perfect color. There is no designer in the world that would choose pale blue for my home. I told Mark, "I was clear about my position from the beginning that you were considerably higher priced than all the other bids, but I was happy to pay for the assistance from a color specialist and for what was billed as excellent customer service." He SAID he understood my perspective each time I spoke this way, but he came back at me with manipulative, gui
"We appreciate this member relating her experience with Remarkable Painting and it is very unfortunate that she has had this experience, not only with 3 other highly-rated Angie’s List contractors, but now also with us. Over the years, we have worked with hundreds of Angie’s List clients, and as seen in the vast majority of reviews, we are praised for what we do and the service we deliver. We put our focus on integrity, honesty, and customer service. We hope that this member and our future clients understand that this is not a typical account of interactions with Remarkable Painting and we ask that you call us with any questions. Thank you, Mark Kinser, Owner Remarkable Painting"
At the end of the work I was very pleased with the quality and the care they took to protect from overspray and drips.
When Ron(colorist) came by he said they would have to prime the trim areas and it would add $90 to the cost. This was un settling to us. We had already given them the deal and they added to the final cost. It wasn't a lot of money-but why was that not included in the original estimate?
The crew was prompt, moved all the furniture, did a very professional job, cleaned up after themselves. They were thoughtful and courteous to us in every way. We have used them before when they were called "Southern Painting" and we had a good experience then too.
Our only concern was a cracked tile on the fireplace facia that we noticed after the first day of painting. We had never seen this before. When we called this to their attention they insisted it had been cracked before the job and that they had noted it with the owner. They had NOT noted it with us or included this in their paperwork. This detail left us uncomfortable-and now we have to find
someone to come replace the tile.
Overall, we think it was excellent work. I don't think we had a good price and next time I think I will get more bids.
So glad we chose them. I'm planning to hire them again for our next paint project! They just recently changed names and appropriately so, they truly were REMARKABLE!
Thank you Remarkable Painting!
