James seemed very nice when he came out to give us a quote to remodel our second bath. Our home is in the country, and so no municipal building inspectors were involved. Once the work started, his people didn't show up until late in the morning and were gone by mid-afternoon. All of the existing sheetrock was supposed to be removed and replaced with mold resistant sheetrock, but this was never done. After two days of work I brought in a friend and expert in tile work in order to get a second opinion on things that didn't seem right. He pointed out that the contractor had installed the cement backer board improperly around the tub, which could lead to severe water damage in the future. Further, the tub itself was not leveled properly, and the new fixtures were installed off center. When I pointed this out to James, he got angry and defensive towards my friend. A heated argument ensued where James claimed that he wasn't finished and that the large gap between the wall and tub was just fine. After several minutes of James showing his ineptitude, he finally left with the understanding that his people would be there shortly to fix the problems and finish the job. I then left for work and a short time later got a call from my wife telling me that James' people had picked up there tools and walked off the job. He refuses to comply with his own contract and finish the work. Further, upon doing more research, which I should have done before signing a contract, I found out that James McDonald and J & S Home Improvements are not licensed in the state of Texas, despite his claim that they are. According to the Secretary of State website, their company does not exist. He claims to have pulled permits on every job he has ever done, yet a search of the Abilene building permit database shows that he has never pulled a single one. Stay far far away from these people. They are liars and cheats.

Response from J & S Home Improvements
First of all.. This customer simply refuses to accept the truth. We started the work in an appropriate manner and very professional. We have been in business for over 10 years in the Big Country. This customer states we are not licensed by the State. Just because the paperwork doesn't show the J & S Home Improvement business name doesn't mean it doesn't exist. We have been more then professional with all of our customers and have ALWAYS finished a job. The story for this particular job goes like this. We ripped out the entire bathroom except for the West side wall where vanity & toilet was. (Per contract the customer did not want this changed so we left it alone) We completely gutted the bathroom tub and installed a brand new top of the line steel tub. We continued to hang our 1/2 cement board around the bathtub. Anyone who has laid tile professionally will agree their is absolutely no Bathroom which is 100% square or even. We told the customer we could manipulate the levelness of the shower walls with the tile when we started putting tile in. The customer agreed to this. Within a few minutes this particular customer brought in "another professional" who was actually a granite guy who has NO experience laying tile at all. (not to mention they have over 20 complaints with the BBB) He proceeded to tell us that everything we were doing had been done wrong and told the customer this as well. I told [Member name removed] that our work had been done the right way and anyone who knew how to put up tile and cement board would realize that. (It's not my fault the house is unlevel or un-square) The bid did not contain anything about me fixing walls or leveling the floor out. This house was in the country and had been abandoned for many years. The customer tried to blame all of this on me which is completely unfair. After me and his "professional contractor" had a few words I decided enough was enough and if we were doing everything the wrong way then he could get in their and show us how its done (since he knew nothing about tile because he is a granite guy) I told my guys to pack up and lets go. The total cost of the job was not $5,500.. But instead here is the breakdown as follows. Cost of job $4,500 Down payment $2,500 Initial cost - Tub, Tile, Sheetrock, Toilet, Mastic, Thin set, Tape, Texture, Paint, and Mud - $1,100 Plumbing cost $600 Total labor 3 guys for 3 days @ $300 / day = $900 Total cost used in 3 days was $2,500 which made up his entire deposit. I told him that I would take not his abuse or neglect and we were leaving. The breakdown shows where the initial deposit went to and that no more money was owed. At this time he threw a temper tantrum and started threatening me with his parents attorneys. I told him simply "see ya in court". I do not know of any contractor in the state who will sit their and take neglect not only from a homeowner but also their so called "professional" granite guy. Since then he has done everything possible to file complaints and ruin our good name. He even went as far as to put a post on Facebook. However he failed to realize that he was in fact committing a crime by Defamation Of Character when he blasted us out on Facebook. He knows he was in the wrong and since he cannot back up anything he has decided to try and slander our name and cause harm to our business. I have no respect for him or anyone else who acts like a 13 yr old baby. We have hundreds of satisfied customers and have never had any complaints whatsoever. Feel free to check our BBB rating. I am more then happy to give over over 50 numbers from satisfied customers who will say we are a professional and trustworthy business. It is impossible to please everyone and this guy just took it to the extreme. He was upset because he's been working on this house over 5 years and the house continues to fall down in pieces. I wish I could make everyone happy but unfortunately people like this just cannot be satisfied.
