I have used Bob Guenther for painting previously. He is always punctual. He is generally quiet and non-communicative. He has hearing problems so you must be very clear about the work you would like him to complete. Prior to my latest experience he has always been a meticulous worker. DAY 1 - On this job I had a significant problem because the primer that he put up to cover the wallpaper paste was not working. When the paint would dry it cracked. It was clear on the first day that this was a problem. When I went to the bathroom to check on the work he began to complain that, "the products these days are no good because there's too much big government. The EPA has it's hand in too much and they keep taking things out of the paints." I ignored the political opinions and asked him what he planned to do to fix the problem. He told me he would contact his supplier. Additionally, the paint wasn't laying well. It was sliding on the walls and lifting up with the roller. Since it was a Friday and he didn't work on the weekends I expected to see him on Monday. DAY 2 - He came in and sanded the walls in the master bath then began painting with the same materials he'd used the prior Friday. It produced the same result. He also painted my basement stairwell that day. When I inspected the work he told me was completed I noticed that he'd painted around the switch plates and other items on the walls but had not removed them. There were several patches on the walls where the old paint showed through. I told him I was concerned that he felt this was complete. He told me he would be back the next day to fix it. DAY 3 - He repainted the basement. When I inspected the work there were 2 different colors on the walls. He checked his work and told me that he accidentally painted the walls the wrong color. He repainted them in the correct color. He sanded the master bath and repainted with the same results. I told him that I was extremely concerned. He told me it was the paint. I asked him when he was getting in touch with the supplier. He told me he would do it. I told him the work needed to be completed that week or he would lose a percentage of the money as a penalty. He told me he'd call the supplier immediately. DAY 4 - Bob showed up with the supplier. Together they determine what new materials he'll use to correct the problems. I tell Bob that it has to be done on Thursday because the house will be unavailable Friday. DAY 5 - Bob shows up with new materials and repaints the master bath. It's finally right. DAY 6 - He visits our home to apply one final coat. I tell him that I will not pay him until the paint is dry and I know it is right. We have a long talk and I point out that he never painted my shower room which was part of the original bid. He tells me that I would have to pay extra. I tell him he should take off money. Finally I just tell him I'll pay the final bill to end the discussion & get him out of my home.
