We were looking to renovate our three story townhouse in center city and after meeting with several contractors decided to go with John Daley, as he was by far the most professional. Upon our initial meeting he carefully evaluated the job showing specific knowledge of the older homes in the area. He even sugested we not do a complete a gut renovation one of the bathrooms as it did not need it and would save us money. His estimate was detailed and it turned out to be spot on. He had great ideas and brought a lot of experience to the table. Because we were not living at the property full time during the renovation we trusted John and his crew not only in our home but to complete the work within our very specific time frame. They came through one hundred percent. We even had an extra issue wih a broken stack pipe - John was able to find a plumber and have the repair done very quickly and at a reasonable price without throwing off our timetable. The quality of the work is outstanding - Both John and his great crew take a lot of pride in their work and they should. It was a pleasure working with Direct Home Remodeling and we would not hesitate to work with John Daley in the future.

I asked Mr. Daley to submit a bid on construction of a pantry and coat closet. He personally answered the phone every time I called him and was very cordial. He was on time for his appointment. During his examination of the proposed construction site and my drawings for the project, though, he shushed me twice when I tried to contribute information. I found this to be off-putting. He was prompt about getting back to me with an estimate, but it was 144% and 244% respectively, of the other two estimates I got. When I called to tell him I had decided to go with some one else he said he had not thought he'd be hearing from me, which gave me the impression that maybe he hadn't wanted to do this job and had intentionally bid high, which is his perogative and may have saved us both some headaches.
Description of Work: I received an estimate.

Response from Direct Value Home Remodeling Inc
I agree that I did respond to this call on time and was cordial, but being that I did not enter into a contract or perform any work I cant see how a negative rating is justified. (I consider anything less than A to be negative) I met this member once and was both cordial and ignorant (two shushes) at the same time? I think that this interaction shows that two positives (member and myself) can sometimes result in a negative. John Daly

John Daly and his team remolded and completed upgrades to my "dream home". I had no previous experience as a homeowner, having lived in a center city apartment for 20 years. Therefore, I consider myself very fortunate to have had John Daly and his team complete the work on my home. My first time experience with home remodeling was excellent and very positive. I was so pleased with the initial job, I called John a second time for additional projects. I was provided with detailed estimates. the projects were completed professionaly and as sheduled and priced.
Description of Work: The projects included: instalation of crown molding (including cathedral ceilings) and door trim, opening of a wall from the kitchen to dining room, building a wine room/pantry, converting one walk-in closet to a small library and another to a pantry, installation of a large fireplace surround, installing an interior secure door from the garage entry room to the living area, electrical work and various other projects. Nothing stopped John and his crew from completing any project including very difficult installations such as the 200+ pound / 105" high mirror or the very heavy large 12 arm chandelier which required ceiling re-inforcement.

I had an incredibly varied list of jobs that needed to be done on my newly purchased (but very old) house. I wanted to find one contractor who would be willing to take on all the jobs rather than have to do all the legwork myself. John Daly, the owner of Direct Value, seemed the most knowledgeable about the various jobs when I spoke to contractors which made me very comfortable going with him. He didn't disappoint. His guys did all the interior remodel work, and were very professional, clean and friendly. For some of the more specific jobs (electrical, steelwork) the subcontractors he brought on were equally good. I wouldn't hesitate to call John if I need more work done in the future.
Description of Work: A wide variety of jobs including: Tear out old plaster ceilings; refinish living/dining room ceiling as exposed beams with sheetrock/styrofoam in between rafters; finish bedroom ceilings with sheetrock; tear out entry vesibule; enclose staircase with wall with cutout and build wall railing on second floor; level floor in rear bedroom (which is catilevered over the backyard and was sagging); resupport rear bedroom with steel posts and i-beam, siding on exterior of rear bedroom; patch stucco on rear wall; replace wiring throughout majority of the house

We contacted John about renovating our sunroom and dormer. We had already met with an architect to ensure we had a workable vision and plan. John's job was to execute that plan. While his price was competitive with other bids, his commitment to service was above and beyond all the rest. Specifically, he did exactly what he said he would do. If John tells you he will call you tonight, he will call you tonight. If he says he will bring by the contract tomorrow at 8am, you set your watch by it. When he tells you his crew will be there in the morning, you can count on it. In addition to being dependable, John and his team, lead by Jeff, executed the job beautifully ? and on budget. As anyone who has lived through a remodeling project will tell you, nothing goes as planned. We discovered during the job that one corner of the sunroom had ?settled? over the years more than the others. As a result, Jeff and his team had to rebuild part of the sunroom to accommodate the windows that was not part of the original quote. John did not charge us for this additional work. In addition, the transition from old to new was seamless. When we discovered that we were not happy with the stucco color we selected, John gave us a reasonable price to re-stucco the whole job. As the pictures show, he and his team did a great job.
Description of Work: Remodeled sunroom and dormer. Rebuilt window frame on dormer and installed new windows. Matched 90 year old trim *exactly*. Demolished walls in sunroom while not damaging existing ceiling, windows, french doors or slate roof. Rebuilt walls and installed new windows. Jeff and his team had to rebuild existing parts of the sunroom due to settling over the years. Their workmanship was spot on. The transition from old to new is seamless. Applied stucco and wood trim to the exterior. Painted flashing and wood trim.

John was very professional when I met him and after he looked at the job we discussed the price. Then, I agreeded to have him do the work and he provided me with a detailed list of everything that needed to be done. Also, the start and completion time of the project. His crew was on time, very polite, and worked on schedule to complete the job. They laid drop clothes throughout the house, so that when they had to take out the toilet, the sink or remove any debri from upstairs, my rugs would not get messed up. They cleaned up behind themselves and were very professional. I am very pleased with the job that was done.
Description of Work: Partially remodeled bathroom. Rebuilt the floor around the toilet, installled plywood over entire bathroom floor and placed new vinly flooring. Fiberglass panels were installed on the bathroom wall with new grab bars.

John and his crew were everything one could expect from a contractor: punctual, reliable, courteous, and meticulous. Nothing was rushed. They spent days laying the tile floor, making sure every edge and angle was precise. His crew leader, Jeff, was also not afraid to offer aesthetic judgments: for example, he started putting up an expensive marble pencil tile one way, didn't think it looked right, and stopped after doing a small section of the wall until I came home that evening. He was right, it didn't look right, and when Jeff did it another way it looked fantastic. John Daly frequently checked on his crew, was always accessible, and his experience was invaluable in talking through options. I have owned several old homes, each undergoing extensive remodeling, and I can truly say that John has been the best contractor I have ever worked with. I would not hesitate to hire him again.
Description of Work: I gutted a disgusting old bathroom, then John came in and turned it into an amazing space: his crew did plumbing (in some cases finding and fixing a problem caused by a previous plumber), floor and wall tiling, lighting, installed cabinets, a Jacuzzi tub, a washing machine, and a drier (and risked their lives to make two perfectly symmetrical duct outlets near the roof line of my three-story home). Also, installed a non-standard, German toilet, sink, and painted. All this in a home built in 1885 where nothing was quite level or true, and installation required considerable finesse and flexibility.

I bought the house and decided to finish the basement before we moved in. Because the house is old and there were crumbling stone walls, making the basement damp, I decided to waterproof the basement before finishing it. I joined Angie's List and found another company, which installed its waterproofing system on the walls and floor. I also found several contractors and got estimates for finishing the basement. John Daly, the principal of Direct Value Home Remodeling, Inc., was professional, knowledgeable and courteous from the start. His estimate was thorough and professional. There were no hidden costs. Mr. Daly independently reviewed the other company's website and the materials it offered to make sure that the work he was proposing did not interfere with the system installed by the other company. Knowing that the other company's work was first, Mr. Daly scheduled his job's start and completion dates to accomplish my stated desire to have all the work completed before our move. His crew, led by Jeff, and assisted by Keith, worked long days and nights to make sure that the job was completed before our move. Mr. Daly and his crew were a delight to work with from start to finish. They were courteous, timely, professional, friendly to me and my children, and thoroughly cleaned up after themselves. Mr. Daly called me during the course of the work with updates and to make sure I had no questions and was pleased with the work. Mr. Daly and Keith returned after we moved in and repaired a window in the basement for me and reinstalled the basement door, which had been removed to allow the materials to be taken into the basement and which had been left off so that our new washer and dryer could be delivered. The stairs to the basement are steep, there is not much room to maneuver going around, but the crew managed to work out the necessary logistics without causing any damage to the halls or walls. At the time we entered into our contract I told Mr. Daly that I was having the old washer and dryer removed and replaced and that I was concerned about the delivery and installing of the new appliances. Mr. Daly had assured me that he would make sure that the washer and dryer were installed while his crew was there so that I did not have to take off time from work. Due to the appliance dealer's errors, the correct appliances were not delivered the first time, three attempts were made before they got it right, but on each occasion Mr. Daly made sure that someone was there, even if it meant interrupting another job or having to travel back to the area after he had left it. Mr. Daly never complained, was always cheerful, professional and courteous. I give him and his crew the highest accolades for the work, which has transformed a damp, scary pit into a clean storage and laundry area and another living space, vital additions for our very small Center City house. I cannot stress strongly enough how much I appreciate Direct Value's work.
Description of Work: Refinished the basement in our new home: consisted of designing the new space, framing out the room with steel studs, installing wall boards on the studded walls and on the ceiling of the main room, installing doors to close off the furnace and laundry areas, extending a metal duct from the existing duct work through the new wall and installing opening and closing register on the wall for the HVAC system, replacing the hot water heater, installing vents for air flow for the hot water heater and furnace areas, and doing electrical work-6 recessed lights in the ceiling on 2 dimmer switches, 2 lights for the storage and laundry areas on 2 switches and 5 duplex electrical receptacles in the walls around the main room. Baseboards were installed in the main room and trim was installed around the 3 doors. Wood shelves were installed in the space under the stairs, the walls and ceilings were spackled, taped and painted and the doors and steps were painted. The rooms were cleaned with a high power vacuum when the job was completed.

Mr. Daly came, quoted the job, and then gave a written estimate. I thought the estimate was detailed. The work started. I originally wanted one office started and finished before work on the other began but I agreed to let them do both offices at the same time, which made the project more heck tic. For the sheet rock office, they failed to properly prep the ceiling for painting, so they had to come back twice to get all of the marks out of the speckle. My painter came and finished the work, with the agreement from Mr. Daly that he would reimburse him for the work. For the suspended ceiling office, the smoke detector and motion sensor were not hooked up properly so I had to have my alarm company come out and properly reinstall them. My computer flatbed scanner was broken during the process and I was reimbursed for those damages. I was reimbursed for all damages and extra services that had to be performed.
Description of Work: Installed sheet rock ceiling in one office. Installed fluorescent lighting to ceiling also. In the second office they installed a suspended ceiling with flush mount lighting.

Response from Direct Value Home Remodeling Inc
JOHN DALY, OWNER/OPERATOR OF DIRECT VALUE HOME REMODELING, INC. STRONGLY DISAGREES WITH THIS REPORT. MY RESPONSE TO THESE RATINGS ARE AS FOLLOWS: PRICE- HOW COULD PRICE GET A D RATING WHEN THE COST OF THIS PROJECT WAS GIVEN TO THIS CUSTOMER ON 10 OCTOBER, 2007 AND CONTRACT WAS NOT SIGNED UNTIL 5 DECEMBER, 2007. CUSTOMER HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO GET COMPETITIVE BIDS ON HIS PROJECT. QUALITY- I INSPECTED THE JOB UPON COMPLETION AND AGREED WITH THE CUSTOMER THAT ONE CEILING NEEDED ADDITIONAL SPACKELING AND SANDING. THE WORKERS RETURNED TO THE JOB SITE THE FOLLOWING DAY TO APPLY ADDITIONAL SPACKEL TO THE CEILING. THE CEILING WAS STILL NOT COMPLETE TO CUSTOMER'S SATISFACTION. SO WE RETURNED A SECOND DAY AND INSTALLED ADDITIONAL SPACKELING AND SANDING TO THE CEILING. CUSTOMER STILL WAS NOT SATISFIED AND WE AGREED, AT HIS SUGGESTION, THAT WE HAVE HIS PAINTER INSTALL ADDITIONAL SPACKELING AND SANDING TO CEILING. THE COST OF THIS WORK BY PAINTER WAS PAID BY JOHN DALY, EVEN THOUGH I THOUGHT THE CEILING WAS COMPLETED SATISFACTORILY BY MY WORKMEN ON THEIR FIRST RETURN TRIP TO JOB SITE. RESPONSIVENESS- I FAIL TO SEE ANY BASIS FOR A C RATING FOR RESPONSIVENESS. I PROMPTLY RETURNED EVERY CALL FROM THIS CUSTOMER AND HAD WORKMEN RETURN THE NEXT DAY WHEN THERE WAS A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE CEILING. I PAID $77 FOR A SCANNER THAT WAS DAMAGED DURING WORK (EVEN THOUGH ALL SMALL ITEMS SUCH AS THIS SCANNER WERE TO BE REMOVED FROM WORK AREA BY CUSTOMER PRIOR TO US STARTING WORK). WHEN THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THE ALARM SYSTEM, I AGREED WITH CUSTOMER THAT I WOULD PAY $75 SERVICE FEE TO THE ALARM COMPANY TO RESET THE ALARM. PUNCTUALITY- IT WAS AGREED WITH CUSTOMER THAT WORK WOULD START AFTER HIS MID JANUARY VACATION. WORK WAS STARTED JANUARY 21ST AND COMPLETED JANUARY 23RD. PROFESSIONALISM- IT IS OBVIOUS THAT ALL THINGS DID NOT GO SMOOTHLY ON THIS PROJECT BUT JOHN DALY ADDRESSED AND SATISFIED ANY PROBLEMS THAT AROSE DURING THE COURSE OF PRODUCTION. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THE PROJECT WAS COMPLETED IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER, ON TIME AND ON BUDGET. AS STATED BEFORE AT THE BEGINNING OF MY RESPONSE, I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THE RATINGS THAT WERE GIVEN BY THIS CUSTOMER. IT IS MY HOPE THAT ANGIE'S LIST MEMBERS WOULD READ ALL THE REPORTS THAT WERE POSTED AND JUDGE MY COMPANY BY ALL OF THE REPORTS.

John Daly was a pleasure to work with - a true professional - and he has an extensive understanding of older homes in the area. The work was done well especially considering the many obstacles the work crew encountered such as my oddly proportioned stairwell. John Daly's work crew were nice and consistent although a greater degree of accuracy when using my toilet would have highly been appreciated. My only complaint is that John wasn't on site more often, although he did check in regularly. Overall, I was very pleased with the work.
Description of Work: John Daly's team did several projects on both my house and rental property over the course of a few months. Work included rebuilding my entire staircase, installing a new exterior front door and nine new windows, and miscellaneous carpentry jobs. In total, the work took about 7 days, with much of the time spent building the staircase.

John Daly is an exceptional professional. He is completely dependable & trustworthy, and stands behind his finished product. He is prompt and efficient in setting up a job (though realistic about when he will be able to begin a specific project), and finishes a job in the expected time frame. He provides thorough assessments & estimates which he will honor (barring legitimately unforeseen complications). Mr. Daly takes the extra time to explain problems & solutions to his customers, helps devise the best plan for the customer's situation and constraints, and truly cares about delivering quality results.
Description of Work: We bought a "remodeled" 100-yr-old house 18 months ago, which turned out to be a superficial make-over with countless errors and cover ups. Thankfully someone referred John Daly (of Direct Value Home Remodeling) when we found that our sewage stack pipe was leaking into the basement. Mr. Daly referred a good plumber, then came in with his crew to repair the walls. Since the stack pipe incident, Direct Value has replaced several windows (including some unexpectedly damaged support structures), replaced a poorly constructed tile shower with sliding glass doors, and replaced an incorrectly installed bathtub/shower (2 different bathrooms). The problems with the mysteriously leaking shower required creative & patient diagnostic skill. Mr. Daly consulted with us for countless hours concerning other issues we were having in the house (a furnace that needed to be replaced, roof & gutter problems, & much else), and connected us with trusted resources.

He was outstanding. He had the patience for the job. He was wonderful. He's also done work for my mom which was wonderful. That work was much more extensive. He obtained the permits before accepting a deposit to demonstrate his commitment. When he said he was going to be there, he was there.
