Great! Tom is practical and experienced. Angie listened to our needs and accommodated our many questions and design changes.
Description of Work: We found Keswick Kitchen on a First Friday event while strolling through Keswick Village. We were in the midst of planning our kitchen remodel with a Big Box Store, but just weren't feeling it with the design given the unique kitchen design that we were going for. We used them for the design consultation and then purchased the cabinets through them (Homecrest Cabinets - based in Indiana). Tom and Angie were great to work with and patient with our design changes and follow-up service work to help get the cabinets installed correctly (I installed them with the help of a close friend who was a general contractor). They followed-up to help get the double-oven installed. We LOVE our new kitchen (which is now in a different room in the house compared to where it was).

One of the biggest problems is the cabnet for the microwave. It is too long and anytime we use the gas range, the microwave gets boiling hot. The refridgerator was improperly installed. We cannot open the left French door all of the way in order to clean the ice maker. The paint job is terrible. They scratched our hardwood floors and broke some of the boards. The baseboards also need to be replaced. The floor itself is horrible. They used grout to make the vinyl flooring squares appear to look like ceramic tiles. They got grout everywhere and we have been unable to clean them up. The only good thing in the kitchen is the countertops because they were done by another contractor. The backsplash has cracks in some of the tiles. We were told by Mr. Frey that it was the "look". Mr. Frey did not come in until the middle of November to check on the work. Some of the workers did ok, but others worked extremely slowly. The new microwave cabinet was supposed to come in on January 9th, but still has not come in. The bathroom floor was also a mess. They laid tile over an existing 50 year old floor. The floor then had a definate slope. The grout that was originally used made it feel like walking on a beach. They came back to redo the floors and got grout all over the place. Our neighbor finally came in and ripped out the floor and installed a new one properly. We actually had to pay another contractor to redo a job that we had paid for. It took the new contractor only 10 days to complete our master bathroom. Mr. Frey has put off fixing these problems. This has been a horrible experience.
Description of Work: They gutted and remodeled our kitchen and bathroom.

Response from KESWICK KITCHEN & BATH L.L.C.
Keswick Kitchen and Bath has been at this location for 5 years and has remodeled over 400 kitchen and bathroom projects. This is the first time we have ever had to go to this type of forum to satisfy a customer’s needs. I hope that this and our supporting documents with help rectify the matter above. 1. The kitchen design was accepted and singed for by the customer on 8/17/2011. The elevation and plans clearly show where the appliances and cabinets are. Both the appliances and cabinets meet manufacturer and NKBA clearance specifications. 2. When we originally started this job we were going to install countertops and repair cabinets. The customer decided they wanted to redo the cabinets and move the refrigerator to the other side of the room. Prior to moving the refrigerator it was explained to (member) that you need to have a 9-12” clearance next to the wall. The customer didn’t think that was good use of space so we compromised with them by putting a smaller cabinetry filler in the space, while still allowing the refrigerator to open 90 plus degrees, therefore the refrigerator was installed properly and to manufacture’s specs. The customer doesn’t like the fact that she has to pull her refrigerator out to clean her ice maker twice a year. 3. “The paint job is terrible” As per invoice 1242 painting states that we would “Patch up 30 sqft of Sheetrock, tape, finish, and leave paint ready”. Any additional footage would be billed materials plus labor. We were never requested to do more than 30 sqft of patching and other than cleaning, the other walls were painted as they were. 4. “Hardwood Floors” The day that we started the job, there were already other contactors working in the house and various other people had been moving through the house. As per our standard practice we put cardboard and paper down on all exposed flooring. When we no longer needed the protection they were removed. After we were substantially finished, (member) had another contractor and movers working in her house. Even (member) discount this as being our fault because he couldn’t say who did it. Furthermore, we were never shown any broken boards or missing baseboards. 5. “The Kitchen Floor” Originally the customer told us they were getting a tile floor. Much later in the project after the subfloor had been installed; the customer notified us that it as going to be vinyl composite floor with grout instead of the tile floor. To accommodate, we changed the subfloor at no charge to accept the proper installation, as per manufacture’s specifications of the flooring material with grout. The floor was prick from another vender of their choosing. The grout was applied and cleaned as per manufacturer’s specs. The first time this was ever brought to our attention, after several punch lists and visits to the home, was not until this notification from Angie’s List. 6. “Countertops” The countertops were installed by us and a subcontractor. The subcontractor fabricated, and installed along with us. 7. “The backsplash has cracks in some tiles, Mr. Frey said it was the look” The customers picked out a natural slate and glass tile backsplash. When we went over her concern regarding these tiles, we did not say it was “the look”, we told them that is was the natural slate tiles and it was the nature of the stone. We did not select the tiles, we installed what the customer chose. 8. “Mr. Frey did not come to visit the job site” Over the course of the job Mr. Frey visited once or twice a week. One of the issues on the jobs was that the homeowners were not yet moved into the house and couldn’t offer feedback to any issues that arose. Generally when the homeowners were asked about change orders the difficulties of the job took several days to get an answer as to which direction they wanted to go. Many of the changes and additional work was done at our store on Wednesday and Friday night when (member) was able to stop in, not on the jobsite which is what we prefer. Our employees and Project Manager were at the job site every day to answer any questions or concerns. The first day that any issues were brought to our attention was on 10/17/2011. These issues were powdery grout, scratches on the floor, defective cabinet doors, and the air switch. We immediately took pictures and rectified the situation which included sealing the floor, ordering two new doors, repainting, and installed the air switch. (Member) also complained about the defective dishwasher acquired from another merchant, which we helped to get replaced and installed free of charge. We sent our employees over on 10/20/2011 to over any punch list items with (member). Those items were rectified. This procedure was repeated on 10/24/2011 and 11/2/11. On 11/8/2011 we installed the replacement doors. On 11/10/11 (member) came into the office to discuss some other issues. Due to the fact that when the installers were on the job site they were not given a clean list of punch list items from the customer. At this time (member) set up an appointment for 11/31/2011 at 4:30 pm. Tom arrived and was greeted by (members) began arguing leading to (member) storming offer to her bedroom fro the remainder of the appointment. While on the way to her bedroom she was screaming a partial list of items down the hallways. Before leading, Tom scheduled a time for the gust to come back out. (Member) consistently interfered with the guys on the jobsite by redirecting them away from the agreed upon punch list items. We compromised to finish up the items over a few days while the (members) were away over the week of December 10th to address the issues of the floor in the bathroom. Although there were issues with sealing of grout, the customer did not like the color they selected themselves so we agreed to try and remove the grout and replaced the color. After hours of labor it was decided it was in everyone’s best interest to replace the floor. We regrouted the original color and then set up an appointment with them to discuss replacing the floor after the holiday. As far as putting the floor over a 50 year old floor, our original estimate included an option to rip out the old wet bed tile floor; they chose to go with the least expensive option of tiling over the old floor which was clearly stated in the invoice. 9. On January 13th 2012, (member) came into the office to discuss the job. At the time he said his wife would prefer to cut ties and settle what was owed and we both agreed it was best. We met with (member) the following Friday night, Jan 20th 2012, and we provided him with a balance owed and credits for “completing the bathroom floor, labor, and materials, vanity, and medicine cabinet that they supplied. We agreed to order a cabinet for above the range at no cost for his contractor. 10. Scratched Kitchen Sink The sink was supplied by the same subcontractor that installed the counter tops. Our employees have witnesses and corrected their contractor who did the mater bathroom that he should be using the utility sink in the basement and not the new kitchen sink to mix grout and clean his tools. Resolution: As per our conversation with (member) on 1/20/2012 all issues were resolved, credits were issued, and the cabinet was ordered. At which time, (member) agreed to give us a check for the balance of $959.96 when the replacement cabinet for above the microwave arrived. On 2/12012 we called (member) to notify him that his cabinet was in and he said he would bring the check for the remaining balance over the pick up his cabinet. During this conversation with (member), I received the notification from Angie’s List of the complaint that was filed. When I told him of this email he said “I’m sorry, I told (member) not to do that”. I informed him that not only did she do that but she singed his name as well. He said “I will call you right back.” We did not hear from him until 2/29/2012 when we received his final check in the mail and he has yet to pick up his cabinet. We still stand behind our agreement that if the homeowners make the final payment the cabinet can be picked up at anytime. We believe the situation is already resolved.
