The experience was fair. I will start with the good. The carpet installers were pretty good. Installation was done by two different subcontractors. Both did quality work. But this is also where the first problem occured. The salesperson from the cranberry store mis-measured the family room carpet. She forget to account for the doorway. This was a blessing in disguss. The installer told me that where she laid out the seams were the worst possible location. The seams would have shown and being in a high traffic area would have worn more quickly. Because of the mis-measurement, Steel City had to take back the carpeting and re-order. I paid for the additional carpeting to do the job right. That was prefered but it extended the time of the job and the amount of time that the house was in disarray.
The hardwood experience was also problematic. The installer did acceptable work installing the flooring however the store forgot to order the baseboards, so he could not finish the work. After waiting weeks for them to call me about installing the baseboards, I had to call them. Appearently they had forgotten. It then took a few more weeks to get the installation scheduled. When the installer showed up the baseboards were not the ranch style the rest of my house has but at this point I just wanted to get the job done. The installer was not as gifted at installing baseboards as he was with the flooring. The joints were poorly mitered and he used caulking to cover the gaps. If you need baseboards, hirea finish carpenter from elsewhere.
One of the biggest disappointments in dealing with Steel City is just like the carpeting, the salesperson misordered the hardwood, only in this case she over ordered by 20% I had one full box that was unopened and a 2nd box with only two pieces used. I understan I have to eat the partially used box. But they should have taken back the box that was unopened. That was about $240 worth of flooring that I got stuck with (not to mention paying for installation that didn't happen) It is understood that %they need to order a little extra (the salesperson told me 5% was normal) but she really blew this one overordering by 20%.
The total job took a full 3 months. This supplier has good products and at least for the carpeting, good installers. Beyond that use at your own risk. If you do decide to use them, one additional word of caution. They try to insist on full payment before installation occures. Do not make this mistake. Even wth the problems, the only bargaining chip I had at times was the fact that there was still a balance due.

"First of all Thank you for purchasing your flooring from our company. We appreciate your business. Thank you also for expressing that we have good installers. As far as the remaining issues, I would like to first apologize if you feel like things took longer than you expected or that too much materials were ordered. Unfortunately, we don't agree with your view of your experience. Our installation manager reviews all jobs and I have also reviewed your job and the seam was figured in the correct place. Your room is over 12 feet long and no matter what way your seam placement was figured out, it would have to be in a traffic area. That is something that we cannot control. In addition, the carpet for your job was sent 3 inches short by the carpet mill and was not mis-measured by our estimator. As far as your baseboards, there was a production date because your baseboards were not in stock and we informed you that they would take longer. Matching your ranch style baseboards in the rest of your house was never discussed. If you are not happy with the way the installer cut any of your joints, we will be more than happy to fix it for you as we stand behind all of our work. On any job, you have to factor in waste to account for cuts and angles. You yourself said you only had one box left over and we actually recommend that you keep one box in case you would ever need it for any reason down the road. But one box is hardly 20% left over that you have incorrectly claimed. Lastly, our payment policy is explained up front and has not been a problem with any of our customers at any time. If you have a problem or any of our customer would have any type of problem, we would happily take care of it. No matter if it was with a product or with an installation. Our goal is to make our customers happy and 99% of our customers are happy. Sometimes issues do occur that our out of our control, even then we do our best to take care of any and all issues in a timely manner. If you have anything you would like to discuss or you are not happy with any part of your job, please feel free to contact me anytime. We will be more than happy to assist you."

Steel City has returned our calls after months of trying to get these problems of vinyl tearing and carpet being flat. We ordered our new vinyl and had an inspector out to look at our carpet. Once everything is completly fixed like promised. i feel i could give them a better review.
Response from Steel time cars
"You informed our company that you had a bubble in your vinyl floor and we fixed it. You then told us that you had a hole in your vinyl floor that you created by moving something heavy over your vinyl floor which is not covered under any warranty. Since we are a reputable company, we fully replaced your vinyl flooring that we were not responsible for, for you at NO COST. In addition, you just reported to our company that you feel that your carpet is flat. We have passed your complaint on to the manufacturer who will send out an independent inspector to determine if there is a manufacturing related problem with your carpeting. If there is a valid problem, we will have no problem replacing your carpet for you. I have no issue with any of our customers writing reviews, as a company, we would appreciate it if you would include all of the facts and accurate ones. We take customer service very seriously and have a department designated solely to making sure that all of our customers are happy. We do apologize for any inconvenience that you have experienced, but as a company, we have handled your issues appropriately and have actually gone above and beyond what we were obligated to do."

Very well - had to tear up an old lenolium flooring beneath yje old carpet, but they did a good job. Appreciated thay they were willing to move furniture around - a lot of places don't do that.

If I had to describe this experience, it would just be a should shrug and eh. We went to the SCF in the North Hills, and met with Tim. Tim was very helpful in finding carpeting we were interested in and setting up a date and time for a carpet measurement. The carpet measurement person was on time and finished his work quickly. It was after we received the measurement and price estimate that I learned a valuable lesson with this company, don't commit to a price and they'll keep calling you back to negotiate a lower price with you. I believe I talked Tim down from a price of around $5000 for carpeting 2 flights of stairs, a living room, and 3 bedrooms to a price of $3390, which was the lowest they could possibly go. I put my partial payment down on 4/6/13, and was told that the installation people would be calling me to set up our installation. Now, granted, my husband and I were extremely busy painting our new home, but nearly a month pasted before SCF called me and asked how my carpet installation went. My response was "what installation? Nobody has called me to set up the appointment for installation yet." They apologized, and had let me know that Tim was no longer with the company, and that they were reviewing all his old files. Then they told me that I had to call to get my carpet installation set up, something that I would have been willing to do 3 weeks prior to this. I called the number they gave me to get my installation set up, and was told, 'oh that should be in next week'... so apparently when you order carpet from them expect it to take about a month to come in, without anyone updating you to what's happening. The gentleman asked how much furniture was in my house, and I told him an average amount. My carpet was installed on 5/1 and 5/2. The installation are contracted, even though SCF claims they've been working with them for years, the customer service is lacking with the installers. They called the wrong number to let us know they were running an hour late on the first day of installation, calling my husband at work, even though our paperwork clearly had my number listed. The one gentleman was very friendly from the installation group, the other one left a lot to be desired. A lot of complaining about working, and how the old carpet was installed, and that there was furniture was in my house - even though I had told them when I set up the date for installation that there was an average amount. At one point - they wanted to put my furniture on my back porch, no thank you! They finished the installation in 2 days, and my carpeting looks nice, the installers cleaned up after themselves, but I wouldn't use this company again and would pay more money to go somewhere else that I feel works with their customers and not against them.
Response from Steel time cars
"Our company contacts everyone when the materials arrive and update our customers if there are production dates in making the materials. I appreciate you saying that the installation looked nice and I apologize that you feel that you had a bad experience with the installers calling you on the wrong number and talking about work. I can assure you that our installers do great work and your feedback is not typical of the feedback that we normally receive. I appreciate your feedback and I wish you the best in the future."

They worked within our schedule, tore out the old flooring and sub-floor and installed a new sub-sloor and flooring. They did a great job. They hauled away all of the olf materials and vacuumed all work areas. We will use them again.

They completed the job, but the installation was very poor. They cracked the trim, left gaps between the various pieces of tile and also where the wall meets up the floor. The job is about 75% complete and feel we didn't get what we paid for. After they installed it they said, "We cannot get the floors wet." These floors were for a kitchen and bathroom which was frustrating because they are going to get wet.
Response from Steel time cars
"We have fixed all issues with regards to this job and the customer has signed off that they are satisfied with the completed flooring project."

While most of the story to date is above as to get it all in here is the rest. I called several cleaning companies like Molly Maids and was told they wouldn't touch this clean up. One very nice person told me to call a restoration company. I called one who told me this will be several thousand dollars to clean up and could have potential health risks if there was asbestos and lead paint issues. He said we will have to move out for 4-5 days while they do the clean up. If they did find asbestos or lead the cost could be huge. I called my homeowners company at his suggestion and was told that since we hired a flooring company they would not be able to help. I called a lawyer who told me you will never be able to afford to fight the lawyers they have thru their insurance company. NO WAY OUT!!!
We were being threatened and taken advantage of by a company who we trusted. My husband called the owner and tried to get to a solution because we were ready to go off the edge. My husband told Jason what the restoration company had said and what it might cost thousands of dollars.. He didn't seem to be concerned as his insurance would pay for it. My husband ask him if we went forward and took the $1,000's off and thy would pay for the clean up directly with the restoration company and pay for the hotel and meals we would need while out of our home, could we move fwd and get past this . I did not agree. Jason also told my husband he would go forward as long as my husband was the only one he would talk to. I own this home and I signed the contract and the finance form. Who is Jason to tell my husband what to do in our home. Again being threathened by SCF to get this done. Why would we think they could do this job right after this - no reason I can think of, but again, we felt helpless and had no one to turn to. We were out $10,000, we had no floors, my kitchen floor is no ruined, my carpet and baseboards were gone. If SCF had been honest in the first place about what had to be done we would never have chosen to prep the house first and everything would have been covered and the furnace off etc. Most likely we would have gone with carpet not to deal with this at all (having said that we may have still picked SCF). Jason told my husband he would put this all in writing, which he had refused to do when he talked to me. He said I had something better than it being in writing - I had his word. Right!!!! That was on Friday and as of Sunday we have not heard anything else.
On Saturday I contacted Angie's List and joined. I wish I would have done that first - . I looked up SCF and read the review another customer wrote about how they cut into his hard wood floors. So much of his story was just like ours. It makes me sick that there are so few honest people left in the world. Companies don't seem to care about their workmanship or how far they will go to get a sale. The have no values when it comes to resolving situations when they occur. It's just sue me - I have insurance. So here we are in a huge mess - missing work, can't breath, out $10,000, no floors, no hope, no way out. What I want at this point is my $500 down payment returned, my entire balance they charged thru the finance company credited, my home completely cleaned, my kitchen floor replaced at least with a subfloor which SCF had agreed to do after they told me to peel it up. When all the money is returned and cleared the bank and a letter has been sent to the restoration company and the contractor that will replace the sub floor telling them to bill SCF directly for the repairs I will gladly have SCF pick up this floor still in boxes in my living room and get out of our lives. I would say to anyone who wants "beautiful new floors" - unless you have tons of money to spend suing this company, or you don't give a d*** about your home - then keep looking. I would not wish this disaster on my worst enemy. And believe me there is tons more that went on that I left out because I am trying to keep the emotion out of this and move on and figure out what to do next.
Update: As of today 11/26/12 the only contact has been from SCF's attorney. After being given the word of the owner Jason that he would pay for the cleanup with the company of our choice, and replace the kitchen subfloor he now claims no responsibility in this matter. The company has offered a $500 settlement a joke since the damage will exceed $5,000. We did have them pick up the flooring materials because we were responsible for the cost of it until it was returned and because we can't get another company to come in and finish this mess until it was removed. We did, however, make it very clear this in no way a resolution to this matter. I will be contacting the Attorney General's Office in this matter. I can also tell you and anyone who intends to consider this company that the men who picked up the flooring were shocked by what we told them happened. They said how sorry they were and they hate every time there is a problem with this company they look bad because they have to retrieve the materials and people get angry with them. They could not have been nicer and it is to bad they don't own this company - I got the feeling if they did we wouldn't be in this mess. They could not understand why sub-contractors were sent because SCF has good employees who do good work according to the two men who picked up the floor. He said he never heard of them using sub contractors, exactly what the salesman told us when we asked. Was this company just to busy and decided to stick us with these two kids who caused all this, and then take no responsibility. Whatever the case I hope consumers think long and hard about ever buying from this company. Our nightmare stills continues two weeks after we should have been enjoying our beautiful new floors.

You be the judge:
In June of this year 2012 I purchased 2 Area Rugs from Steel City Flooring.
In July of 2012 the rug arrived and was installed (I must say it was a very good product).
Upon Installation of the Area rugs and the Padding both items were cut to size over Oak Flooring leaving deep cuts in the oak. The installer admitted that he did do it and that was the normal method of install (If you?re concerns about the floor underneath you should check it if you purchased rugs from Steel City Flooring). Then I pointed out that this was an area rug and was noted in the contract? furthermore it stated NO TACK Strips which should have given Steel City Flooring an Idea that I did not want to have the oak floor damaged. At this time I wanted this to be resolved and I stopped payment on the finial check.
The Installation Coordinator Dave came out and upon viewing the Oak Flooring stated that some of theses cuts were old but I pointed out to him they were not. The reason for the appearance of appearing old is that I tried to clean the flooring and the dirt logged in the cuts and once this happened I stopped cleaning and left the floor as it was and then he walked out after I offered him a simple test that he could do.
Next the Steel City Hardwood Flooring Rep came and said that Steel City Flooring wanted the floor buffed out but the cuts were too deep and that the complete floor had to be redone.
In speaking to Dave, he said that just cover the cuts it?s an old house why am I concerned? IT?S MY HOUSE and I?m retired and I?m fixing the house up. At that time I pointed out there web site that they were insured and that if they could or would not fix the floor then I want there insurance agent to evaluate the floor and have it resolved. The insurance agent agreed that there was damage upon install and a settlement was made.
He also mentioned that Steel City flooring should have mention there method of install.
Three (3) days after the check was cashed from the insurance company, Dave from Steel City demanded payment. I pointed out that he had the check and it was live?. So cash it. He said that he would check the file.
Approximately four (4) days latter Dave called and said that the bank kept the check which had a hold on it and that I should write another check. I said no and he then threatens to take me to court at this time.
Note: I spoke to my bank and their statement?if the bank can not cash the check it will be returned to the person who submitted it. Please bear in mind that the hold was for two (2) weeks and now the check is live and Dave still wants another check. If I write this check then there will be two (2) live checks and I?m refusing to do it.
I then spoke to Jason the owner and she stated he would now take this issue and research what happed and after calling his bank and he returned the call and stated that his bank will research what happened to the check.
Bottom line is that the product is good as far as I can tell but the installation is far from being desirable and when things go sour there is major push back from the Installation Coordinator instead of working to resolve this matter in a timely and profession manner. This went on for approximately 4 mos. and took 5 days out of my life and a threat of taking me to court. This strong arm tactic is and will not be accepted.
Thus on a scale of 5 with 5 being the best I have to give them a 1 and that is stretching it.

"Your facts are only partially accurate and you have omitted many points. You did purchase 2 area rugs that you wanted installed in June of 2012 that were installed on June, 18 2012. The installer did accidentally put a scratch in your hardwood. As any good company would do, we submitted your claim to the insurance company and expedited it as quickly as possible for you to make you a happy customer. You personally told me yourself that you thought the product was great and the installation looked beautiful. The part you seem to have omitted is that fact that you stopped payment on your check and you were supposed to pay the balance owed to our company when you received your check from the insurance company. But unfortunately, despite doing everything possible on our end to make sure you were taken care of. You did not extend the same courtesy to us. You never told us that you received you insurance check and never called to pay off the balance on your account. When we did talk you, you simply gave us the run around and were uncooperative. After ignoring us for an addition week, we did inform you that if you were not going to cooperate with us that we would have no other option but to attempt to get restitution via the local magistrate. That is basically what any business would do that has not been paid for work that was performed over 110 days ago. We are the fastest growing flooring company in Pittsburgh and we just received an award as a 2012 Top 100 Fastest Growing Business in Pittsburgh. We service over 15,000 customers on an annual basis and we take customer service very seriously. In fact, we have a department dedicated solely to customer service. By your own admission, we did everything possible needed to make you a happy customer and you received a great product. If you are unhappy that our company asked you for payment on a job that was installed nearly 4 months ago, then please accept my apologies. As of the date of this response, we have still not been paid for the job."

Overall...Steel City Flooring gave me the right info. with no bull. To the point ,honest, and I actually got the carpet & padding I purchased. The installers Mike and Chad were great. You could see they took pride in their work. It was done right the first time.
On time, clean, like it was their own home. The price for the carpet was alot less than your other stores.. The owner Jason Muller was very patient since I'm one of those nervous nelly types....
