$10,000
The experience started of great. Barb was very timely and made time during the week and weekends to stop by and talk through the design. She came up with a great layout of the bathroom and how it would come together. After the design work was done she sent me a quote for about $10,000 for my 7' x 5' bathroom. This price did not include materials except for plumbing and electrical.
As I was researching the various quotes for plumbing, electrical, tile, etc. I was noticing that these costs were significantly above the market cost of the area. The quote didn't really justify these costs or lay them out in terms of dollars per hour or cost per square footage, so I didn't understand why some of these costs were so high. The plumber himself was $2000 more than even the highest plumber on angles list for the same work. When I inquired about why the cost was this high I was met with "Well this is the price, you are happy to find another plumber". No explanation to the cost, which is all I was really asked for. Im happy to pay the costs for high quality work, and I was somehow irritated that I was met with immediate resistance when I didn't even ask about switching plumber.
I went ahead and kept the project going and the plumber was great and timely, the first week went really smooth and the plumber and electrician both finished within their respective times. I never got a quote on a tile work; as a note, the $10,000 quote didn't include tile work as it said TBD. I asked for weeks on what the cost would be and I kept getting, "Ill get back to you". Finally, I got the quote. $2500. Again, she wouldn't say if it was price per square foot or price per hour, which are reasonable standards of measurement to determine cost. Again, I got the "he's a high end tile guy, but you are happy to shop around. I don't shop my guys". I just asked if it was per square foot or per hour, she thought I was complaining about the cost (which was again $1000) higher than the next guy. One thing to note too, for as much as he was costing, he wasn't available for 2 weeks. So I ended up hiring someone else to come do the tile work on my own, because I couldn't afford to waste time without a bathroom.
Once the tile guy was done, the glass guy came the next week and had the glass in the shower installed within the next week. The sub actually reached out to me directly instead of going through Barb, who at this point kept choosing not to touch base with me or keep me in contact. I asked her when the plumber could come do the finish work. No timelines, was just told he's really busy and "probably 2 weeks out". Instead of working with him to schedule time an exact time, I kept getting an excuse as to why we couldn't figure it out. To be honest, she kept making it seem like she was doing me a favor, even though I was the paying customer.
The plumber finally came and got everything done, and then it was time for the electrician to come in and finish up. Literally just needing to finish the bathroom fan and adjust the light. Ive been trying to get her to schedule time with him since November 5th. It took 6 weeks to get him in, and when I asked her on the 6th week when she was ever going to get back to me on times, she was shocked he didnt come out already. Like, suddenly all the subs were going to me directly, instead of going through her for the whole project.
The bathroom is finally done, and I love the look of it. All of the subs do excellent work, and were super respectful of my house and the job when they were in my house. I really thought barb was a nice person, and she has a good vision for the work, just was not a good project manager/general contractor for the project. She rarely checked in, would never explain how she came up with the prices, and treated me like she was doing a favor my taking my money and being unresponsive. At the end of the day, if I am paying $10k for a bathroom remodel, she should have been the one constantly reaching out to me to find my availability to schedule subs to come out to do the work. Instead, I was always the one reaching out to her and trying to figure out when they were free, when they could come, etc. I would not choose to hire Barb again.
