Initially, the project was moving along well; wet weather played a part in the timing and progress of the work, and then the frequency and planned "work days" became a problem.  The owner would make a commitment to be at the job site on a specific day/time, then not show up...no phone calls either. This went on for weeks, then months.  The total projcet took over 6 months to complete, and there are still elements that are not acceptable.

The working relationship did not end well...we received a bill for the work, which was 2x what the verbal agreement was at the beginning.  (note: no hard copy of the bid was ever submitted at the beginning, nor were any change orders submitted or signed).  Decisions to order material and/or use alternative materials was never discussed and/or presented to us as owners, so our assumption was that these things were included in the original bid.  We paid what we had originally agreed to pay for the job, which was unacceptable to the company's owner.  Numerous phone calls took place "pleading for payment of the additional funds".  No further resolution was every made with the company.
Response from Shine Up Landscape Maintenance & Construction LLC
"We are greatly disappointed that this customer would post a negative response to our work 2 years later. We did everything possible to make these people happy. We took a totally unusable yard and brought in a tremendous amount of dirt, gravel, bark, and large boulders to build up and try to level the front yard. Pat had a vision with pathways, stairs, walls, and landscape which he was able to complete somehow ,even though, we grossly underbid the job. We took many before and after pictures and this yard was absolutely beautiful when it was completed. We certainly did learn from the mistake of trying to be so eager to please someone and ,in turn , did not carefully factor in all the costs for materials. We did finish everything and a lot more than we originally agreed even though, we had to use our own money to buy materials and pay our help. Pat earned no money for his labor. We always keep our regular customers happy when we are doing a side job such as this, so Pat could not possibly be there every time he wanted to. The year of 2010 we were absolutely in the longest rainy season straight which was a big factor for Pat taking longer than he wanted, however, he did everything humanly possible to do the best he could manage under the circumstances. When we started this job, we really wanted to keep these customers for future jobs, but we could not seem to make them happy since it took longer than planned to get this job done. Most people would have walked away since it was apparent he basically was working for free, but we wanted first and foremost to finish what was started. We now do no work for anyone without a written contract and we very carefully estimate all the materials needed, and this is the part of all this that was a learning experience. We now have many many customers, most of then elderly, who we work for and appreciate all Pat does. He is such a kind person and will drop everything to help one of his elderly customers who need him, from a door sticking or a toilet that is not functioning. He is on call almost 24 hours a day for such emergencies. We did send this customer a list of everything we purchased, hoping they would help out a little for the materials, however, they did not. We feel badly that we were not better at estimating from the start, especially since this customer may not have wanted to do the project at all if they knew what it would end up costing. In the end, they do have a beautiful yard and we have pictures for our portfolio."

It went excellently! We called on a Friday to inquire about services and Pat and crew showed up around noon the next day, working through intermittent rain to tame my poor neglected yard.  The front, which wasn't in such poor repair to begin with, was skillfully mowed, edged, and raked. The back, on the other hand, went from being a seemingly insurmountable thicket to a human-habitable space that we could begin to see potential in. To be clear: this wasn't landscaping ? it was a brute-force land reclamation operation ? and by the end of a very damp and muddy day's work, the guys looked like they'd been through the ringer. In addition to all of the yard work, they also hauled off all of the difficult-to-dispose-of things that we'd allowed to accumulate... broken tomato cages, scraps of lumber and pipe, etc. Really, just the kind of strong-backed, smart helping hands that we needed to get back on track. I can't imagine that it's the kind of work they'd prefer to do, but if you've let your yard get away from you, call Shine Up. Seriously.

We're still figuring out what we want to do with the yard now that we've got it back, so we haven't turned to Shine Up for their landscaping and monthly maintenance services yet, but we definitely will be. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
