David arrived promptly for the initial visit (on a weekend) and was very informative and clearly spelled out the scope, cost and availability of his services. Upon receiving a deposit, he ordered my windows, which arrived as scheduled. He allowed me to perform as much of the work as I wanted, and adjusted off his initial estimate for that which he didn't execute. His crew arrived on time, was friendly and communicative and cleaned up after each day.
Description of Work: Installed 3 egress windows in basement and 3 block concrete window wells. Framed out 2 interior walls.

Great! We are familiar with Dave McGee and his team, and this was another excellent experience for us. Dave is wonderful to work with. He takes the time to do things right and is very responsive to our input and questions. We appreciate the way he is able to problem-solve and think of creative solutions, and the whole remodeling process is just so smooth and painless. He and his team are extremely professional, it is a pleasure to work with someone so genuine and who is really just such a great guy. As always, his emphasis on environmentally responsible building practices is a big hit with us, and we were happy to pay the nominal recycling fees. He also reduces and reuses whenever he can, so with the recycling the waste produced from his projects is really minimal.
Description of Work: Remodel of bathroom, including demo, framing, breaking concrete floor and excavating to install sump pump, updating plumbing and electrical where needed, frame and tile new shower, tile floor, replace toilet, install new vanity and cabinet, install new bathroom door, custom-built bench over sump pump. Also replaced window and trimmed out window box.

Dave was a pleasure to work with from the start and I'd happily hire him again. My first email to him was loaded with questions and he was very responsive and informative. He came to the house for the bid a week after and there we came up with a project plan together. The next day he had a bid for me and it was a line-item breakdown of each part of the project. He said if I wanted to do any item myself, he would adjust the price and work it into the schedule. He also said if there were items I wanted to do but was unsure about doing, he could come in as a consultant to get us started. He also arranged with one of his clients for me to come by their home to evaluate an in-progress basement remodel. Dave took me through and explained his process and the work, giving me a first hand account of what I might expect from his work. Dave was also aware of environmentally responsible practices including recycling concrete, reusing wood for framing, and using a safe cotton insulation for the walls. I was happy with everything I heard and saw and so I hired him and couldn't be happier about my decision. I'm pleased with the quality of his team's work and the process of getting there was painless. The only glitch was one miscommunication about the materials I wanted for the window treatment and this was resolved to my satisfaction quickly and without any hassle or fuss at all. As a bonus, Dave comped me the labor on a third window treatment which I hadn't included in the original plan due to budget constraints. I recommend Dave McGee's services most highly.
Description of Work: Basement room update: Install new egress window (included cutting concrete, purchase and install of windows and well enclosure, etc). Replace an older second window. Re-frame walls away from concrete foundation. Add insulation. Sheetrock, mud, tape, texture walls. Finish with crown and baseboard molding and new wood window boxes and trim for three windows.

Very well. The job started on time. Someone was onsite every day, as promised, and it was completed on time.
Description of Work: Converted our little 1920's garage into a garden shed and studio/garden room. The roof was gabled to allow installation of 4 sky-lights. The studio was finished with sheetrock, and trimmed out. A window was installed on the north side and a large French door provides access to the studio from the garden patio. Power was provided to the structure also.

David and his crew were fantastic. They showed up right on time and got right to the job. I was impressed that he had his crew wear respirators and that he was committed to protecting the health of his crew. He had thought ahead and bought a number of different anchors in case they were needed. In fact they were, as there was duct work that created awkward angles and difficult to get to spaces. The crew was very efficient and David obviously has surrounded himself with good workers who know what they are doing. He seemed very friendly with his crew and it was apparent that they have good working relationships. David has terrific communication skills. He listens well and made sure he understood what I needed, what my expectations were and what the specifications were for the job. He explained possible different scenarios and planned ahead for them. As a result of his planning, his crew could be efficient, and got in and got the job done! They were very hard workers and very focused on the job at hand. I was so impressed, I asked them to come back and dismantle an old and large covered deck for me. They did this without injuring the siding or other parts of the building. They took the good wood to the rebuilding center and the not so good wood, they recycled. I was impressed with his conscientiousness and his concern for the environment. Because he is an engineer as well as a contractor, he is able to see the bigger perspective, which I think helps construction jobs, which are all about a gazillion details, to go more smoothly. He was very respectful of me as a woman, explained everything very well, helped me to anticipate possible challenges, prepare me for them and chart out possible outcomes. Fortunately, the foundation was in good shape and we did not need to worry, but if we had, I felt David helped to prepare me. He was very easy to work with, had a good sense of humor and was cost effective. He was respectful with his crew and I was reassured that he had a good working relationship with them and they seemed quite capable of thinking independently as well. I would recommend David and his crew to anyone needing great work at a reasonable price.
Description of Work: David and his crew did seismic upgrades on my foundation. I am working on a change of occupancy and this is one of the requirements by the city. The anchors had to be bolted into the foundation every four feet. It was in a tight crawlspace. I was so impressed with their work that I had them come back and dismantle an old deck.

They worked quickly and as cleanly as possible and dealt with difficult issues effectively. We felt like we got very good value for our money and we would use them again.

David responded right away to my voice message asking him for an estimate. He came to my home on a Saturday to do a site visit - on one of his off-work days! He suggested several options for the location and finishing and had a number of ideas that I hadn't come across in my research. He sent me an itemized estimate a couple of days later, after discussing what work I could do myself if I wanted to keep the cost down. He also gave me all the measurements I would need. I was able to have the window well dug on my own and opted for a concrete window well in place of a corrugated metal well. It looks so much better! Dave scheduled a date for a few weeks later and showed up with his crew only a day late, after giving me notice of the delay ahead of time. All the work was done expertly, with as little mess as possible. The end result is terrific.
Description of Work: This job included building a window well and cutting hole in my concrete basement wall. I opted to have the well dug myself and to handle the city permitting myself.

The whole experience was excellent. We really enjoyed working with Dave and his employee, Brian. They were punctual, courteous, flexible and very respectful. I was really impressed by how tidy they maintained the job site. The quality of work which they provided was excellent. Dave understood our budget concerns and pointed out ways that we could save money on several occasions. He was also very helpful when unexpected issues would arise, for example we found that the back of our house was uninsulated and the existing siding was damaged. He patiently explained to us the several alternatives we had without pressuring us into anything. Incidentally, we've hired Dave's crew to remodel our bathroom and we're just as pleased with all aspects of this project.
Description of Work: Dave and his crew did an extensive remodel of the back of our 1922 bungalow. We hired them to convert our kitchen and former back-porch turned sun room into a kitchen and dining space. To try and save money, we did most of the demo, flooring, appliance & lighting installation ourselves and ordered cabinets & countertops through a company that provided installation. Dave's crew diagnosed structural issues, provided designs, and pulled permits. Then they installed 3 skylights, 5 windows, 1 sliding glass door, 3 wooden doors, 1 enormous beam, new siding on the entire back of the house, insulation, sheetrock & texture. As Dave explained it, they "created a new room" which we then filled with cabinets, countertops & appliances.

We couldn't be happier with the job Dave McGee and his team did. Dave is an honest, hardworking, talented craftsman with excellent attention to detail and high standards. We ran into some frustrations with the permitting process and Dave helped us through it and made sure things were done right. We really enjoyed working with him, he and his team were very professional. His subs all did a great job too, and Dave was always there to let them in and coordinate. He is very flexible and will work with you to help you cut costs or do some of the work yourself if you want. He also very environmentally conscious -- he uses lumber from sustainable forests and recycled cotton insulation, and he spent a lot of time sorting/recycling all the demo materials: wood, metals (including nails and wiring), sheet rock. The only waste that was thrown away from the entire demo fit into one trash bag, and he hauled it with him. He also followed up after the job to make sure there were no loose ends.
Description of Work: Basement remodel, including large multipurpose room and medium sized bedroom. Work included significant amount of demo of previous wood siding and existing ceiling, as well as moving several walls and a doorway. The bedroom was enlarged and a closet was moved, an existed unfinished area was expanded slightly to add more storage space, and the new living area was reframed. Plumbing was redirected to install a new sink, and new canned lighting was installed throughout. The basement wall were sealed, and Dave framed in a new gas fireplace. The job also required replacing 3 existing support posts, which involved cutting and repouring concrete. Dave also created a new wood banister for the stairway that matched an existing design elsewhere on the property. Cabinets were installed, and all windows were reframed and all new baseboards, door surrounds, and mouldings were installed. In addition, Dave's team drew the plans and did all the legwork to navigate the permitting process.

It went great. Dave and his team were very reliable and professional, and the job was finished in a timely fashion. The quality was excellent, and the price seemed fair. Dave is also great about doing things in a cost-efficient and creative way, and goes out of his way to get things right. We also appreciate his emphasis on reducing waste and recycling, he does everything he can to reuse materials and recycle what can be, and the remaining waste is very minimal.
Description of Work: Replaced 2 small, old basement windows with full sized egress windows. Involved cutting concrete, digging out window well, placing an aluminum well, framing and installing vinyl windows, and finishing installation.

Great. Dave responded promptly to an emailed inquiry, performed an estimate on our schedule, started work within 2 weeks of original inquiry and finished exactly on time. Went over estimate, but we were forewarned, he did not know in advance how many new boards would be needed. He has been very accommodating given our schedules and needs.

The first part of the job was the trim work in the master bedroom. David's employee did a good job, and was able to mask a gap in the new ceiling we had put up to make it look like everything lined up just perfectly. We also had a lot of odd angles, and small detail work with a total of 16 collars (trim) needing to be added around exposed beams. The caulking could have been neater, or I would have preferred to do that part myself, but all in all it was good. The second part was baseboards. David and his employee did a little more than half of the baseboards in several rooms, with our supplied materials. A small communication problem occurred, so we probably should have been home during the job, but David came back the next day to remedy the problem to our satisfaction. We ended up finishing the project ourselves, mostly because of budget, but also time. We are happy with the outcome and would use David's company again.

From the time that I met David he was completely professional, answered the phone directly or called me back quickly. He came to give an estimate and his input and ideas. He was very upbeat. We stayed in touch re. the date of pouring the cement which was dependent on us doing the yard work, removing bricks and leveling the land. We called on a Wednesday I believe and asked if we could do it on the following Monday and he said no problem as he has a team so that someone would be able to do the job on Monday. We put stakes in the ground and measured the 7' X 7" square with string. He came ahead of time to put up the wood frame and then put the gravel into the frame. That Monday he poured the cement and it was done right on schedule and executed with precision and care. 5 Stars for working with David and his team!!!
Description of Work: We had a 7'X 7'X 4" high cement pad poured in our back yard for a hot tub. David and his team did an impeccable job and were really great to work with. David is a pleasure to work with, he has a really positive attitude. He has high standards and takes pride in his work and realizes that if his name is on the work it has to be very well done. The cement slab is perfectly level without cracks and is a professional job. David worked with us on the price as he said that if we removed the bricks and did the grading so that the ground was level and picked up the gravel from Decorative Rocks on Columbia Blvd he would do it for $750 instead of $1000-$1100. We were really grateful as we just moved here and have to watch our finances as the hot tub is a stretch however improves health and well being during the winter.

It went smoothly. Dave was very professional from start to finish. We had to communicate quite a bit at the beginning when he was ordering the windows. He also arrived the day the door was being delivered to help the delivery guy move the door downstairs. In obtaining the building permit, the engineer required that 21" X 12" footings be placed below the studs in the door - which changed the project, but wasn't a problem. They came in on a Monday and they were almost completely finished on Wednesday. They came back on Friday to put the corrugated metal into the window well and assemble the hardware on the French door.
Description of Work: Dave and his team purchased the windows, dug out a large window well, cut 2 windows and 1 French door into the concrete, removed the concrete and installed the windows and doors.

I received a prompt call initially in response to my email asking for a bid. I explained the job and Dave said he would get out there before the end of the week to look at the site and come back to me with a price. After a week I hadn't heard back so I called and left a voicemail asking for an update but didn't hear back. After a week and a half I gave up and found someone else who has already started the work.

David bid our project and was extremely professional, helpful and spent a lot of time with us to help us get his estimate right. We were very impressed with his desire to explore and use environmentally friendly materials and processes and we really wanted to hire David. We had grand ideas of a fence surrounding our entire yard so that's where we started but realized that we needed to break the job into bits for personal reasons. Dave was very flexible as the scope of the job changed. In addition, we were in a big rush to get the gate finished and he made that happen. He sunk poles for us so we could do the panels ourselves. He cut the wood we needed. He offered ways for us to keep the cost of the job down, for instance doing the clean up ourselves which we were very appreicative of.
Description of Work: Dave installed a strong steel-reinforced cedar gate at our driveway and sunk poles along a future fence line. He repaired the edge of a roof that needed facing. He cut wood that enabled us to do some of the work ourselves, per our request.
