It worked out great. Laura the owner was just really responsive, she got back to me right away and got the job done right away. The big deal was for $99 and I paid them $450 more for all the extra work I had them do.
Description of Work: I purchased a big deal for Aries Yard Works for yard maintenance. They did front yard cleaning and hand picking the weeds out.

Hello! Thank you for the support to our work! I hope the plants list and the work detail I gave you is still of interest. Realigning the dry rock bed in your curb strip and cleaning it up reminded me that customers have so many ways to express their individuality of their homes. And yours, with its elegant rocks and beautiful flowers was certainly a pleasure to work with. All three of us took great care to get into all the nooks and crannies while climbing on those big boulders on the front slope. Almost too much fun there! Thank you again and it has been very nice to have the continued communication ~Laura Iris (Nick and Matt)

my two hour purchase was an initial work order. they returned for a day's worth of weeding, trimming, and hauling. the supervisor and her team were very conscientious, professional, and efficient. they offered knowledgeable advice. however, we were not in a position to continue on a "regular" basis for further cleanup activities at this time.
Description of Work: aries provided extensive detailed analysis of work needed to be done in our yard - both front and back. this included trimming, removing dead plants and trees, gathering debris. my two hour purchase was an initial work order. they returned for a day's worth of weeding, trimming, and hauling.

Laura called promptly and was on time (even early) for our appointment. She did not seem interested in giving us an estimate for the basic work we wanted performed (edge/yard cleanup). We were hoping to get basic service for the $99 we had paid and, if we were happy with that, we would hire them for regular service once or twice a month. Laura was more interested in getting us to hire her company to do a much larger job than we were interested in at this time. She gave us an estimate of around $2,750 for a complete yard cleanup. We actually entertained the idea, until we read reviews from others who had the same type of job done for $550 - $750. When she had not heard back from us, she sent us an email offering to do the work for $1,500. This struck us as a little desperate. We learned that her company was in a difficult financial situation due to an accident, and felt that she was trying to get us to hire them for a highly inflated amount because of her situation. We applied for a refund of our $99 and received it. Laura was a nice lady, but we would not consider hiring her company because of this experience.
Description of Work: Came to give an estimate for services that we could get with our $99 Angie's List Big Deal.

Hi There- Original cost was for the extensive work your husband wanted done. You and I never met and reviewed what he walked me through. The "basic" work I was told about over the phone turned into more when I got there. As far as any difficulties due to the accident> 1.had nothing to do with my estimates to you or others 2. only difficulty mentioned was that it physically hurt! Your husband was kind in inquiring how I was feeling. 3. Most importantly: I noted in my profile about the accident. Anyone reading it would understand that I was concerned for my customers and the commitments I made to them. YOU made up the part that I was price gouging. I reduced the cost because the work itself was going to be reduced AND you wanted a monthly service AND you wanted excavation work done to level backyard and put in a patio AND a retaining wall out front AND back fill behind it AND other fine work to property. We discussed ideas and design and I said I have a great contractor for you to talk with about the remodeling. Again...cost was reduced to reflect priority of work to be done over time. Oh yes, and because I was trying to work within your budget.

Great! Very conscientious and thorough. Takes real pride in their work and final product.
Description of Work: About 5 hours of clean-up, trimming, edging, etc. It's usually 3-5 workers. Has a long term plan for future tree trimming, shrub maintenance, etc. The yard was really over-grown and needed quite a bit to get it back into shape.

I sent an email through the AL new Messaging Center. I did not contact because THEIR system was failing. I told you that as well as to other members who went through the new system. I have it on my profile to contact direct because the new system limits my info about you and takes much more time to contact. I cannot type emails or text when 1. Driving and 2. it is not available I used to be able to just hit a phone number while on blue tooth to let members know I received their info and Thank them for the coupon purchase. And when out of the field/working I will make contact later in the day/evening to set a time/date to meet. Sometimes I was able to do it right away. Many Many members were impressed with my quick response. Sometimes minutes after a coupon purchase. Also...I was NOT a no call no show. There was no email address or phone number. AL no longer provides it on the purchase notifications. I have to go through their system to send messages. They are the go-between now. An I will not down load any apps to my phone. Too many issues already. You and I made an appointment to meet and then we rescheduled to another day. We went from yesterday, Fri 8am 8/16 to Sun morning 8/18; time to be determined. . As a courtesy to you I was willing to come out on a Sunday. From the beginning I kept you informed. AL system was down when your info came through I had to go through other channels to make contact with all the members who were trying to reach me. I let know that. It is now Saturday morning at 714 am 8/17. I will be contacting you to cancel. I do not need "customers" or members like you. From the start you were abrasive but I put it down to annoyance over the hiccups in the system that YOU were UNAWARE of till I told you. Then we spoke and you were agreeable to meet. I said to myself..OK, she is annoyed but willing to meet. Q: Why did you agree to meet when you already wrote this review??? A no call no show? The workers were professional and did a good job, but there were a couple of issues. Specifically, the lady who came out to provide the estimate was a bit pushy and wasn't very friendly. She also didn't properly communicate the scope of the job to the workers because they weren't adequately equipped to do the work. Additionally, I ended up paying $125.00 in addition to the $99.00 that I paid to purchase the Big Deal.

Hello Member: When the workers arrived at your home they called the owner-Laura Iris (pushy not friendly lady)and asked about other work you told them to do. Specifically, an overgrown back yard mow. Had it been on their duties list they would have had the mower with them. They did not. Why? Because it was not part of the work detail. The work did not include that or the other things you told them they were to do. As it was, the work they were sent to do was good in scope of weeds-a lot of weeds both in beds and on hard surfaces- trimming of a large wisteria on fence, trimming of several bushes, raking out of compacted debris under plants and shrubs and trimming up the low branches to clean them up, raking out and collecting of all generated debris. They were there one hour above the stated time commitment for completion for two men. At no other cost to you. And as you wrote..They were professional and did a good job. What happened is you thought you were going to get some other work done that was not discussed between myself and the TWO young men who arrived. But they did call me. And did check in with me. Member, costs are also included in the estimate. Such as fuels, equipment use, etc. The coupon is for some discount on labor only. It does not cover the second trip out to a site (My first trip is free to give an estimate) and its related costs to do work. Unfortunately, I cannot operate on fairy dust. Cute, but not going to happen. But thank you for the review. Your file is permanently closed.

My yard is not very big, and she wanted $825 for the work, which seemed too high. In the meantime, our neighbor was complaining about some bamboo encroaching under their stone patio, so we needed to get rid of it. I found a specialist in bamboo removal for that job. I told her the bamboo had to be removed, so not to include it in the estimate. She only took $25 off, so it was unclear exactly what she was charging the other $800 for. I didn't hire the work to be done. The pruning and weeding will have to wait.
Description of Work: She responded quickly and came over to see the work that needed to be done. She gave me an estimate on pruning a few shrubs and weeding around some flagstone pathways.

Hello Member- Sorry the expectation you had for the work on your property was not in line with the reality of the scope of work to be done. I understand it is a bit difficult to gauge what is going on with property when you are an absentee landlord living in another state. It-at time I was there- was very overgrown and had compaction in flagstone of weeds and invasive material. The Bamboo was past the two story roof line and about 20 plus feet long and about 2 feet deep in areas. With circumferences of up to 1". Shrubs, curb strip Roses, overgrown edges onto sidewalk, dead shrubs and other material. Leaves, and tall grasses growing into everything. Although there is no lawn there was MUCH overgrowth. For a smaller property it has many many things planted and died off. Very busy property. Much debris. Including moss on pavers and walkways. I only took $25 off for the Bamboo because I was only going to run a chainsaw through it to bring it down until you got a Bamboo excavating man out there instead. $25 was for cost of equipment. Not the labor. Good deal. I only needed the chainsaw for the Bamboo. No chainsaw no $25 cost. Labor still to haul out the cuts.. and still cut up to put in trailer. It would still have been a chore. I have to cover some cost for the expensive equipment. With it growing under your neighbors patio says how bad it got. I have the pictures we took of the front, side yards and from across the street. Hope it all worked out for you and your property Regards, Laura Iris

I ended up pruning my daphne and going over the over bushes. I could have had other people do it for less money. I am very unhappy with this service
Description of Work: They came (Laura Iris) to prune some bushes. We went to Angies list as we have been happy with services rendered in the past. I signed up for 99.00 for shrubs to be pruned. That was suppose to be 200.00 worth. I had 4 bushes (2 rhodies small) 1 daphne and 1 miniature hokai tree. She looked at them and wanted 100.00 more and 75.00 to carry away. Told her we could take care of the carry away so she said for 50. and I said ok. When she came she worked on the tree mostly and then did some on the rhodies, did not even touch my daphne. In all I paid out 225.00 cash for what was suppose to be 325.00 of work

Dear Member-As I had stated, the weather at the time was very hot. Not a good time to heavy prune a Daphne. I told your husband I would return for that at a later date and he said OK. No additional charge, of course. As far as the Rhodies go they were full of dead wood and had not been done in awhile. We cleaned those out for better light, air and water. The Hanoki was overgrown and you wanted it to look like the other Hanoki, which was manicured, in one visit. Again, too much pruning all at once. It needed time to recover to get in some new growth or it would look chopped up; and it would not look like the other because of the Azalea which grew into it and compromised the growth. Translation: bald. BTW: the Azalea was trimmed as well. The debris removal was not inclusive in the fine print. We did take out much with the Rhodies and the Hanoki as it was and additional labor to cart it to dump, remove debris from truck and cost to do so. All was hand fine pruning. not a gas hedge trimmer chop job. I was there for four hours with a helper. Two people. We cleaned areas under plants/shrubs that had not been done in a long time because it was overgrown and the needles and leaves were stuck and piled in the areas that could not be reached until we pruned and removed much dead debris. That's what happens when things grow so close to a structure and not raked out well overall. It looked much better than when we arrived. We also cleaned up very well and took care of smaller issues while there. Some weeding, too. Thank you for your review. This forum helps us understand the concerns members have. But...question...why on earth did you not contact me with your concerns???

It was an Angie's list Big Deal that I purchased. It was good. A lot of time was given and they were punctual. They provided a very high quality of service. They used a sickle and it was a very difficult job. They did not show any hesitation in getting the job done. I thought they were very time efficient and they were able to clear up the area.

Dear Member- I traveled out to you all in good faith. The far reaches of Estacada. It was nearly an hour drive...one way! then I spent more than TWO HOURS with you going over what you wanted done AND you AGREED to the cost. A well as arranging a monthly service. You called me a few days after my visit stating your social security, and your husband, are not in line with what was agreed to. Not to mention that I had already coordinated and scheduled everything. WE are out costs and an expectation of work/income. Don't you know what you can and cannot afford? Are you not aware, if you are on a fixed income, that you only have "X" amount of dollars to spare? Or, that the scope of work involved would require more than picking a few dandelions? You never mentioned funds were that limited, or at the time that I gave you my estimate that it was out of your price range. I gave you a good price for the amount of work on your acreage. NOT a small area and certainly NOT simple work. You also took me over to a large stand of old growth trees you wanted cared for. We spoke at great length what you wanted done and why. And not once did you say anything about funds. You just kept on and on about all the work that needed to be done and how much you needed the help. I don't take advantage, ma'am. But you certainly did.... of my knowledge, my time, my consideration to your sentiment of the property and the work you already put into it. We did communicate for me to come back out and do some limited work but with the understanding that fuels and costs had to be considered. And it was $69 not $79 which was applied to the run out there and/or the administrative work to coordinate everything for the original TWO day project. Wow. Really. I should be miffed, but this review reflects you and other members who believe there is an entitlement, an arrogance, to be flung at good hard working contractors through this medium instead of COMMUNICATING in an adult mature manner. Your file, which was still in the active cabinet, has now been moved to "closed"

Hello Member-Thank you for the review. Debris disposal is stated in coupon print and you paid only $60 for the amount of debris we took out.. I am a bit surprised by your statement that work was done OK. I remember it being rainy, muddy and there being many plants and shrubs and how you were pleased with amount of pruning and related work that was done (we transplanted 2 plants and did a large leaf clean up) . You commented all was being done well. Not to mention the clean up was great; again, considering the conditions we worked in. Price was discussed prior to work commencing. It was agreed upon. They did an awesome job! There was a plant they could not save due to weed issues and Lara Iris brought new plants to replace this one plant and gave me 4 plants to compensate for this one plant that was unsalvageable. Theyalso finished up an area they were afraid to work on due to an old sprinkler system and put in paving stones to help next to a fence door. So very impressed due to their work and thoroughness. Laura Iris gave me so much good information regarding my lawn and what I need to do to maintain things. Great crew that actually hand weeded mt beds after they tilled them and hand removed the weeds out of my wall and driveway.

Thank You Member! Saying we did an awesome job has my crew very pleased with themselves! Many thanks from them, too. Finding a good deal on plants for you was a mission of mine. I really was disappointed to not be able to save what was there, but it worked out in the end. The monies you paid were put to good use, considering I was able to get the stepping stones and plants as well. The guys really made sure the hard pack soil was tilled well and inches of amendment was added. Your enthusiasm for your property (front yard) now that it is cleaned up is great. I hope you can find the time to plant all the flowers you want now! Thank you for the "Yes" re hire. Morning Member- Glad you were still pleased with the work. It was a very tall and wide Laural with thick limbs. You purchased a $149 coupon for the reduction of this busy Laural; aside from the additional $50 you paid you did not loose money from his going back over the first cuts at the onset. Only the agreed upon $50 was collected above the coupon. He was actually there longer to complete the work...at no additional charge to you. The coupon is a discount on a project for labor. Related costs, such as fuels and equipment use, are not part of the labor only you agreed to. It was not hourly work-it was bid upon the job itself. The additional time was because the Laural was tall and wide and more fuel and equipment use was needed and he naturally had to stay longer in order to complete work. He is also not a subcontractor. He is a 20 year veteran of hedge/tree work who chooses to work with me. I let your wife know that she would be getting an experienced worker for that kind of work. She also added the breaking of taken limbs of the debris she wanted to stay to fit in a pile to be disposed of by you with your yard waste pick up. It was a lot of debris.. As a courtesy to her, he did just that. Approximately 30 minutes of time that you did not pay for. There was much limb/leaf debris which you did not want to pay for disposal of into my truck/trailer/dump. So, I really do not see where you paid more money. *Sometimes cuts are first conservatively made...can't glue it back on once done. Your wife instructed him that she really wanted it cut lower after you spoke with him* He called me about this and about the debris and about the work itself even though he was directed on it by me based on the conversations I had with your wife when I visited the site prior to work commencing.

I was a little dismayed to see one of the ferns cut back to the stalks at this time of year, but as it was self-sown and had survived our very partial gardening skill over several years, I think it will come back. The job went well overall. The back is now very clear for us to plant more ground-cover and the front has been amended and planted and so can fill out over the rest of spring. They left watering & care instructions for us so as to have the front the way we wanted it to end up looking.
Description of Work: They weeded the back yard, hauled away the debris, and amended the soil and planted extra ground-cover in the front.

Morning Member! Thank you again for having us return to your home. As far as the ferns go; I mentioned to your husband that it is a good time to take off the old frongs and make room for the new ones. You will see brown(it's the papery casing)/whitish new frongs that are curled up at the crown; they will then unfurl as they shoot up. The ground cover (Kinnikinnik: arctostaphylos massachusetts) is very hardy and can withstand the conditions of the area it is in. I will look into the Moroccan Mint you like so much. I did see the little frogs again and was happy for that. A good sign of good conditions there. Just remember to keep that very dry soil moist;especially in summer. Even hardy ground cover needs moisture. All the Best! ~Laura Iris

Growing up, my mom taught me that if you can't say something nice, don't way anything at all......I thought about remaining silent (in explanation for the 2 month delay in feedback) then realized that if everyone on Angie"s list did that I'd not be able to benefit from the wonderful people that take the time to give their opinions. I truly thank everyone and have benefited from your feedback several times since becoming a member. Therefore... They called stating it would be a while before they could perform the service due to a large response to their Angie's List ad, then called back an hour later making an appointment for the next day. They arrived an hour late. We discussed the work and the way I wanted the shrubs trimmed. They assured me they could do all the shrubs surrounding the house. They only did a portion of the work, leaving the 2 largest bushes untrimmed and did not trim the shrubs to my requested spec's. I would not use them again and feel that I've wasted $69.00

$69

Response from Aries Yard Works
Dear Member... The $69.00 coupon deal was for $100 worth of work. Your shrub..ONE shrub..to be worked on was large and had been neglected for a long time-Andromeda-in the front of the yard under the front window, and compacted. We also took the debris. The deal was for ONE hour of trimming and debris goes. We did the messy Rhodies in the back and another shrub that was also in need. We also trimmed smaller ones at the foot of front stairs. We worked quickly and efficiently and gave you more than the hour's worth and more than you paid for. You, member, decided which shrubs were to be done first. As the ones in the front were priority because you wanted the house to look decent from the front as you were planning a full scale remodel of the front yard. Which, by the way, you dangled that tid bit out to me. I don't take bribes, but I did know we could show you the excellent work we can do. The gentleman who pruned for you has more than 32 years of Ornamental, large tree and plant pruning experience. His work has been noted as one of the best in the County. You were fortunate I had him do the work and for the $69 you paid for. He was going to work on a large scale project with me after we visited you. The $100 for $69 was already covered by the FOUR messy shrubs we worked on and the smaller ones and the disposal costs and the labor for that. Raking up debris, loading into truck, etc. One of the reasons we added time was I was waiting on a third person to show up. He was to meet us there to move onto another customer. While I waited I addressed the smaller plants you had interest in trimming on the side yard where fencing was going in and in the back. My "busy work" worked to your advantage. The EXTRA work we did and took that debris as well was part of what you wanted addressed when you remodeled at a later date. I did a follow up email and called to ask how you liked the work. You did call me-left a voice mail- and say the shrubs were great looking and you questioned the much larger/compacted ones on the side of the house. I called you back and left a voice mail reminding you that the priority was the front and the one's in the back-per you-and to please contact anytime with other questions or comments. You did not. It is now April 22, 2013. I just received notice from AL about your review. You purchased a $69 coupon on Fri Feb 8, 2013 @ 8:47PM. I went out to you on Sat Feb 9 @ 1230 pm to review site. Work was on Mon Feb 11 (not the 16th as you posted on review) @ 830am. We were not an hour late. Yes, we have been late on jobs before but I know we were not on yours because I arrived BEFORE the Senior Pruner of 32 years experience got there to meet him. ???? You wanted to get as much work done for your hour as possible on as many shrubs/plants as possible. We complied above and beyond that expectation and agreement. You even stated that you understood that the much larger/compacted ones at the side of the house would be a separate project. We could not give you the excellent level of work you received that day with those two shrubs in one hour-not even with the extra time. EACH would be MORE than an hour. And, those are not the one's you wanted done first as it was. My time there was about two 2+ hours= the one hour you paid for and the additional 1+hour waiting for my other guy. ***BTW: We were ahead of schedule but he had a hold up on another job in your area and we needed a piece of equipment he had on my other truck*** So you benefited from that-greatly! Glad you were taught about saying nice things...now, how about the truth?

Laura met with me soon after I paid for the Angies List coupon, and we agreed on the work and the date it would be done. Unfortunately, Laura and her crew were in an accident the night before our work was scheduled, so the work had to be pushed off a few days. This was unavoidable so I did not ding here for this. However, I specifically ordered the compost to arrive the day before they were scheduled to work, so I had to cover the pile so that it did not get soaked with the rain due the next few days before Laura could get out here. Laura and her crew were supposed to start at 9:00. About 8:30 I got a call from Laura saying the crew was running late but she would be here by 9:00. She arrived at 9:15, we went over the scope of work again, and she said her crew was 5-10 minutes away, and that she would wait for them at the bottom of the hill. She also said they would complete the job, even if it took longer than the man hours I paid for. After about 20 minutes, I looked out the window, and not only was the crew not there, but Laura was packing things in her truck and then took off! I was bewildered and called her, got her voice mail and left a not so nice message. Fortunately, about 10 minutes later, her crew of two showed up. Once they were here, they worked hard. It is not easy bringing the compost up by the barrel up several steps and two hills to put it in place. But they were diligent and completed the job even though it did take longer to do than the hours my coupon covered. So kudos to the crew for a great job and thanks Laura for ensuring the job got done even though it took more time than expected.
Description of Work: Brought compost from behind the yard up several steps to garden beds and raked it around plants.

Thank You member for the A report! I am sorry that our timing was so off on your watch! I apologize for the way it seemed that I was leaving with equipment. Actually, I had pushed barrels and shovels off back of truck at the mulch pile. My guys were coming up hill at that time. I had to leave for a Physical Therapy appointment-that I was also late for. Your appreciation and support of the diligence my guys have is kind. They are a hard working crew and do take seriously their commitment to our customers and the business. And boy did they get a work out at your place! All good! Thank you again and I sincerely apologize for the timing. Glad we were able to make it up to you with good work and customer satisfaction. ~Laura Iris and Crew (Your team for the day was Chris B. and Matt)

She did a good job. She was unable to complete the work on the first visit. She did come back out to finish the work she said she would do, though it was a little bit later than anticipated. It was a result of the weather conditions at the time, so it was not her fault. They did a good job and I would recommend them to anyone.

Thank You member for the A report! Yes, weather at times can make work very difficult and/or unsafe. I am glad we did get to finish the very overgrown Snowbush as scheduled, but it was unfortunate that the limbs from the neighboring tree were an issue and had to wait to be worked on because of the weather. The additional free work you received to clear the fallen limbs, chainsaw large limbs, stack and remove debris and clear the invasive material into the Snowbush, without charge, was a courtesy offer to a Valued Senior of Life Experiences. It is in our profile for Seniors, Military and Special Situations. Thank you for the opportunity to showcase our commitment to quality work and sincere customer service! and the "Yes" to rehire! ~Laura Iris and Crew Your team for the day was Laura and Steve
