Crew was very friendly and very neat. Later checked and did a little touch up. Another company just down the street from us was 20% higher with one finish coat. We then got bids from both companies for some difficult interior work. Cut No Corners was competitive, winner to be determined later. These guys got paint where it belonged, none where it did not belong. They had to walk on a Monier tile roof to clean and paint the upper story, a job given to Mitchel who was careful where to step and could paint too!. A lot of the job meant working behind bushes and they were helpful showing me where to trim to make their job easier and spare the shrubbery.
Description of Work: Cleaned and painted exterior of a two story house, scraped, one coats primer, two finish coats. Painted a custom front door. Repaired some rotting wood. Neighbors walking by comment on the beautiful job.

The guys removed the locks from the windows, helped move some HEAVY antique furniture removed the 3 doors and took them to their shop to paint, then reinstalled them. All wood work in our house was had prevarnished maple trim and the pocket and entry doors were maple stained. The interior doors were new, primed only. The slider was maple. Everything was sanded, two coats primer and two finish coats. Took 4 full days. I added new white window lifts and casement window cranks and trim. Amazing transformation. I am now installing new baseboards and door trim to finish the look. They were to come at their leisure as we were in no hurry. They had a job cancel so they called and gave us a few days notice. Showed when promised ( a rarity in the NW in my experience). We are retired so were at home the whole time. The crew was great to be around, protected everything they were working around and carefully marked leftover paint. We had them paint the exterior of our house during the past summer and will have them back should we need more work done.
Description of Work: Painted two rooms and a 2 1/2 story stairwell, 3 interior doors both side, 3 sets of bifold doors one side, stairs baseboards, 11 window frames and windows from wood to white, including between the double panes, three casement windows also double paned, two crank out.. Painted one sliding patio door, including screen door, two entry doors one side, and three pocket doors one side. Painted the door frames.

Walt and his crew did a great job. They had to coordinate with two other contractors that were doing work in the house, and were very easy to work with. The painting job turned out well- out house looked so crisp and clean. It was a slight challenge getting them to come back for touch-ups, but in the end it all worked out well.
Description of Work: Painted the entire interior of our home.

I called several other painters on Angie's List and none returned my call. I called Walt late on a Friday, left a messsage, and heard back from him early the following Monday. He provided a bid the same day, and since we knew from research what the ballpark cost should be, we knew Walt's bid was absolutely fair. He was honest in providing his schedule, and when another job fell through, he offered us the opportunity to move up the date, which we gladly accepted. Walt's crew pressure washed the house on Friday, and began painting on Monday. The crew showed up each morning of the 3 day job promptly at 8:00 AM and quickly got to work. Walt visited the job site each day, checking in with the crew chief and each of the crew members. Matt, the crew chief, was on top of things from the start, keeping us informed, pointing out issues, (some isolated dry rot) and suggesting solutions. They left the job site clean and neat each evening, and thoroughly cleaned up at the end. The whole crew was courteous and professional throughout the 3 days. I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to anyone.

Walt returned our call the next day and was understanding and willingly voided the contract we had signed and he had received. We were extremely satisfied that he responded to our request in such a timely and positive manner. He has been courteous and very professional in all our dealings.
Description of Work: Walt was responsive to our request for a bid to paint the exterior of our home. We started shopping last year, and he offered us a fair price. This year when we were ready to proceed he honored that bid. We signed the contract and mailed it to him. As things go the following day we had an emergency that impacted the funds we had set aside for this project. We called him and left a message that we needed to cancel.

We are extremely pleased with our entire experience with Cut No Corners painting. Walt and his crew delivered by a considerable margin the best house painting we have ever received, and we have received numerous compliments on our new paint job and quality of the repairs. Walt returned my phone calls right away, and when he came out for the bid he explained in detail every step of the painting process and why it was important. He noticed more things about my house, and showed me areas where I had problems due to how our house had been painted before than any of the other bids we received; and he explained what he planned to do differently to get a better result. Walt's team was very professional every step of the way and they left no detail unattended. They were also very careful, to not damage the landscaping. Walt's team and the contractor, Ron, are exceptionally good at teamwork. Pressure washing, repairs, and painting were coordinated and adapted to keep things on schedule without compromising the quality. This included coordinating with the roof and gutter contractor, so the job ran smoothly. Walt also helped us through the process of picking out paints to get the look and quality we wanted. He recommended we try samples to test the colors we had chosen on the house before painting. That turned out to be invaluable because those small sample color strips look very different painted on a large surface and in different types of light. We changed to slightly darker house color after the testing process. Our two story house required a lot of work on tall ladders and we have a lot of trim, all of which needed to be masked and hand painted. The bay window areas over our garage are above our steep roof and presented yet another challenge since they had to stand on a steep incline on the roof to do the work. All the painters did a fantastic job with these challenges and worked with ease under these circumstances. We were thrilled to learn that Walt and his team also do interior painting and we plan to use them for the inside of our home so it looks as good as the exterior. I would like to comment on the lengthy negative review about Cut No Corners Painting dated 7-2-14 from someone who never used their services. Their major complaint appears to be the plan to start painting the day after pressure washing. I looked up painting and pressure washing before we had our house painted and you need at least one day for drying when using latex paint so Walt was correct. We have a large shed that was washed the day before painting. In the warm weather it dried right away and was painted the next day with no problems whatsoever. I don't understand why this member was unhappy because Walt always gave us good advice and he really understands painting. Without hesitation we highly recommend Cut No Corners painting and based on our experience, they really live up to their name. We will definitely use them again and I would happily provide them a reference.
Description of Work: Walt and his team painted the exterior of our large two story home. We also hired Ron, a contractor that works closely with Walt and his team, to repair several areas of extensive dry rot.

Walt offered a competitive bid and we engaged Cut No Corners. The crew showed up on time, were very courteous and professional. The job was done in a few days and we could not be more pleased. The work was top quality. After the first day of painting we went around for an inspection and were surprised to see that the color was not the one we had selected (we were matching the previous color of the house). It was more than a few shades lighter and by that time the crew had already painted two whole exterior walls. We were feeling quite bad too that we had not gone out and caught the mistake earlier but since we had given them an exact paint code from our previous color we though the match was computerized and "nothing could go wrong". We talked with Walt that night and sent him photos which clearly showed the difference in colors. I must say we were very impressed that in that first call, without knowing who was at fault (maybe we had made a mistake or our previous painter gave us the wrong code?), Walt immediately said "please don't worry about this, we will take care of it and it will not cost you any extra". They got to the bottom of the problem with the supplier of the paint (who had put in the wrong color into the mixer and then mislabeled the paint). Needless to say we were very relieved and they had the correct paint out the next morning and took care of everything without any hassle at all. Now that is the kind of professionalism that you want to have in a contractor. A+

Walt was on time for meetings, was proactive in ensuring I saw all the issues on the exterior of the house that might cause problems. He recommended a contractor, Ron, who was able to replace rotting beams, etc., and he worked within the contractor's schedule so that I had no concern one job would push out the other. Both Walt and Ron wanted to make sure our house was left in better shape than when they arrived. Walt's team was on time each day, cleaned up when they were done, and was responsive to any concerns I had. They accidentally broke two underground sprinkler elements, which they fixed well. We would hire them again for sure.
Description of Work: We hired Walt and his crew to paint the exterior of our house. After receiving the original bid we wanted to add a trim color, which he gladly added for a reasonable price.

Walt Murfin, from Cut No Corners Painting LLC, came out promptly to give me a paint bid on the exterior of my home. He was on time, professional, knowledgeable, his price was competitive, and he answered a myriad of questions. I liked the thorough process he was going to use for the prep work and we were in agreement on the amount of paint, and brands, that would be used. Several days later I called to let him know I'd accepted his bid. As we'd discussed earlier, he was working me into a tight schedule. His crew of 2 guys would start in 2 days. They would come out over the next 5-6 weekends until the job was completed. Walt mentioned they would pressure wash the first day, then caulk, prime & possibly start staining the second day. This meant I needed to get to the paint store ASAP to finish purchasing the primer and stain. Upon my arrival at Miller Paint Store the sales staff brought the primer and stain up to the counter. As they did so they gave me a brief overview of how to use each product. One of the topics that caught my attention was when they brought the stain out they mentioned there should be at least a 48-72 hour drying time between pressure washing and application, depending on the weather conditions. This was a Red Flag. Earlier when Walt advised me his guys would pressure wash the first day, then caulk, prime & possibly start staining the next, I'd asked him if that was enough drying time. I shared that it's late June and everything on the mountain was still pretty wet. His response was, "No problem, we do this all the time." As I'm in the paint store listening to the Miller's staffer advise me of each product's recommended application process I realize that what they're recommending is not what Walt was intending to do. I gave Walt a call to clarify the products I was supposed to purchase. He verified I was correct in my understanding. I mentioned to him the pressure wash/stain application time-line per the manufacture's recommendations. He immediately responded with a raised voice and aggressive demeanor. He stated he was sick of paint store personnel questioning his 30 years of painting experience; who do they think they are, what do they know, he's the painter, etc., etc., etc. He then asked to speak to the Miller's person. I handed the phone over to him and I could hear Walt reaming him out. When the Miller's person told Walt he was simply stating the manufacturer's suggested recommendation, Walt's "irritation" escalated even higher. The Miller guy had the phone up to his ear, was standing on the other side of the counter, and due to the degree of Walt's agitation, I could hear both sides of the conversation clearly. When I got back on the line with Walt I asked him if he'd be willing to further discuss this with me in order to alleviate my concerns. He said he would. I shared that my concerns are that I live in the mountains; in a rain forest environment where we get 2/3 more rain than PDX, our temps are 10 degrees cooler, the humidity is higher, and, my house is totally surrounded by trees and never sees the sun. I went on to explain that in the last week, due to the unusually high volume of rain, I had multiple 12' long pools of standing water in my front and back yard. Everything was saturated. I asked if it was possible for his crew to pressure wash this weekend, let the house sit for a week, then come back the following weekend to caulk, prime and stain. He said, "Absolutely not. Either it's done this weekend, my way, or not at all." I responded with, "I'd like to purchase the stain, think about this on my drive home (it takes an hour), then give you a call." He said, "No. You decide right now. It's now or never" I advised him, "I'll pass." Final Thoughts: I feel like I dodged a bullet. I'm an over 65, single woman. Walt is not someone I'd want to engage with should I have a concern or be dissatisfied with his services. Not only was he rude and unprofessional, he also used high pressure and bullying tactics. I'm left questioning the credibility of his business name, "Cut No Corners."

Contacted Walt for a bid for some painting, staining, and wall paper removal work that I needed done. He answered the phone on my first call, was very courteous, and we scheduled a time for him to come out and look at the work. He showed up at the scheduled time and we did a walk through of all of the work. He said that he would send me a bid within the next few days. Two and half weeks later, and I still haven't heard back from him. I figured he didn't want the job, so I went with someone else.

Whoever said that you can't make a silk purse out of a pig's ear has never had these folks paint their house!! My house was built in 1955 and had cheap siding to start with. Add to that the fact that it had not been painted for 20 years and the house was a mess. The crew from Cut no Corners spent several days doing the sanding and caulking needed to prep the house and 2 more days to paint. The results are amazing....it looks new!! The cost was very reasonable considering the amount of work they did. The crew showed up at the scheduled times and worked hard throughout the day. They we great to have around: they worked hard but were cheerful the entire time. If your house needs painting this is the company to go to. They are the BEST!!

Walt was timely in his return of my initial phone call, arrived at the site before any of the other potential painters I called, and got a quote to me first also. It was fortunate that he had a cancellation and was able to get my house painted in the week when his cancellation occurred. His quotation was on a Monday, I accepted on a Monday night, and the project was done that Friday. To boot, the 1902 vintage of the duplex made other painters hesitant and/or unwilling to take on the project. Walt even came with me to the paint store to pick colors. I give his follow-up, communication, ability to stick with the quotation, performance and quality all an A+!

The owner of the company's name is Walt. He is a great guy to deal with.At first we played phone tag for a couple of days but once we got on the same page, communication was much easier. Walt is an easy going, personable man who is easy to work with. I wasn't here when he came out to do the estimate but he was able to get it to me by email. After I decided to go with his company for the painting job..BAM...everything went quick. So I decided on Sunday July 28 to accept his bid and called and told him so. He said he would have a crew out THAT week or possibly the following week to power wash the house. With the weather being so nice, everyone wants there house painted NOW. A few of the other companies I called for an estimate were telling me 1-2 months before they could get out there to do the job. So 1-2 weeks was nothing for me. Anyhow on Friday, August 2 Walt called and said he had a crew free due to unforseen repairs on another house and could they come out and power wash the condo that day. That was great by me. So they came out and got the condo washed. I called Walt and asked him what happens next and when will the house get painted and he said the following week probably. SO on Sunday, Walt called and said he would have a crew there at 8:00 AM on Monday morning August 5. The crew showed on time and jumped right into the working of caulking, priming and taking care of minor repairs prior to painting. It was a 4 man crew and they were like ants working on the condo. On top of all that, the temp was 90+ degrees and brutal outside. But these guys just kept right on going. They addressed my concerns on areas that needed a little more TLC and did a fabulous job.....more than I actually dared hoped for. I thought I might have to get a handyman to do a couple of spot repairs but his crew was able to handle the repairs and make it look good. They actually started to paint the main body of the house and sides. So 4:00 PM rolls around and they start cleaning up and calling it a day. But they had gotten a LOT done and the condo - both sides was looking better already. They next day, 8:00 AM and a crew of SIX is there and jumps right on the job. There is a little more caulking, more touch up repairs and LOTS more painting. It was another 90+ degree day but these guys are still going gangbusters on the job. At 4:00 they clean up and head out. The condo is almost done with basically some trim work and touch-up left to do. SO on Wednesday 8:00 AM two guys come back to finish the job. Matt the lead painter and Walt's son. They get busy on the Trim and touch-up and about 2:00 PM Walt's son has to leave, so Matt is left on his own. Matt is a great painter. He has 20 years experience painting houses and I found him to be a great person to work with. Good personality, Positive attitude and willing to make the customer happy. I walked around the condo with him pointed out all the stuff I felt need to be taken care of. Matt didn't complain, make excuses or show indifference. He said no problem and took care of it. THAT IS CUSTOMER SERVICE!. A lot of places and companies have no concept of the meaning of that. Well this company does! Matt didn't finish till about 5:30 - 6:00 PM that night but when he was done....it was done to MY satisfaction. I am EXTREMELY PLEASED with this company and its personnel all the way around. I would definitely use them again and they would be my first choice for a painting project. This was a great painting experience thanks to Walt and his crew.

I called to get a quote for stripping lead based paint from my house. Four people had already come to bid the project. Because it has peeling lead based paint, there were differing ideas on what should be done. I called and spoke to Walt about the project. He was incredibly knowledgeable and shared his advice on what to consider. While he is lead based certified, his approach wouldn't be ideal for my situation. He took the time to help someone figure out the best approach even though that meant that he wouldn't be considered for the job. If my situation would have been different, I would have loved to go with him!

Although I posted that the work was done in June sometime, I may be off by a few weeks one way or the other. The owner, Brad Murfin showed up right on time to give my husband and me a bid. He was friendly knowledgeable and very professional. And since he is also a Star Trek aficionado we hit it off immediately. We scheduled a date for his workers to start. His workers, Curtis and Joe showed up right on time ready to work and within a very short time period they were done. They put two coats on the sewing room walls but one coat was enough for the rest of the painting since I was having the same color applied. The finished work was really nice. I am very happy with the work performed. I do have tiny, small complaint. Apparently somehow the sewing room must not have been taped off completely or there was a small hole in the plastic used, because some paint got on my window blind and I had to replace it. The cost was $525! Ouch! However, this gave me an opportunity to find Premiere Window Coverings on Angie's List and I ended up buying even more blinds. I guess all's well that ends well. Thanks Brad. And btw, I loved the Star Trek movie!

The actual painting was very very good, after the initial house wash; the painting was done in two days. Walt Murfin's crews were well staffed and equipped. Two and three painters were involved in the preparation scraping, priming, masking, etc. One painter did the actual painting. Once on site the painting was quick and well done. At the end of the day the mess was removed and the grounds clean-up. The best part was completing the job in two days and the cleanup was good. Sceduling the actual painting was based on the weather and other jobs in the que. This resulted in some inconvience sticking around the house for the painters to arive, not sure when this would occure. The only area for improvment would be better scheduling of the actual work.
Description of Work: Painted the outside of our home 2,000 ft, on one level, plus a large garage with lots of trim.

I also called this company based on its "A" rating and asked for a exterior bid on a 2004 built home. He gave us an excellent bid and he told us he used Sherwin Williams brand paint and we could choose any quality of paint for the exterior. Upon calling Walt, the owner, to set up a schedule for starting I said I would email him the paint colors and that we would use Duration. He came back with the fact he would have to charge us more and that he told us previously he was basing his bid on $25 per gallon and not a higher price. He said he doesn't work with Duration paint by Sherwin Williams. I told him our original conversation and acceptance of his bid was based on his perimeters of using any paint we wanted in the Sherwin Williams line of product and he made no mention of price per gallon he needed to stay in and did not mention of any product that he didn't want to use. He became very unprofessional all of a sudden and I told him we would find someone else to paint our home. Glad this happened before he started on the job because I think something would have triggered a dispute on or after the job. Just a head's up.
Description of Work: Gave a bid and then changed the perimeters of that bid when we were ready to use his services.

Response from Cut No Corners Painting LLC
Hi [removed member name], i do recall talking with you, you told me that you had gotten many bids before you chose my company you also asked me to reduce my price and i did, then you said you wanted to use Duration, and i told you that i and other contractors have had problems with failures. you then said you still wanted to use it, i told you that i had already given you a bid at $25.00 per gallon of paint, that is my price if you were to buy the same paint it would cost you about $40.00 per gallon. why didn't you tell me at the time i was giving you the bid in the first place that you wanted to use a paint that cost about $50.00 per gallon? my guess is that you knew you could use the threat of a bad review on Angies List to get what you wanted. i think we do agree on one thing, that it was a good thing that we did not work together.

They were extremely professional, fast and thorough. My 1926 kitchen had many layers of paint, including a peeling coat from a quick and dirty amateur job the previous owner did to sell the house. Suffice to say, there was a great deal of prep needed. Cut No Corners got the whole project done in three days, although I expected them to take five. It looks excellent and they did a good job cleaning up and treating my home with care and respect. It's hard to find anyone highly competent who shows up on time, follows instructions and uses good judgment; in short, someone you can trust. This business is one of those.
