After selling me on their size and assets, I signed up with Blackmon Mooring to move my household items from my home to protect them from damage. My house was hit by a tornado and the ceilings were dropping in, covering everything with insulation, drywall, and fiberglass. They promised eight workers the first day -only three girls showed up. I later discovered they had re-routed several workers to my neighbor's home after signing them up....using me as a reference earlier that morning. It wasn't until after 4:00 pm that more people showed up. The one-day move turned into two long painful days (until 10:00pm each night). They did not give me an estimate, but kept telling me it was covered by my insurance. They called in a local dry cleaner to remove my clothes for cleaning without my consent. More on these guys later. After moving my household goods, they were supposed to return the third day to begin tearing out my drywall, insulation, etc. Nobody ever showed up. Friends, volunteers, and I began the demolition work. After a week, I called the GM -he was surprised that my "project Manager had never met me or seen my property. The project manager showed up the next day, begrudgingly, and said that he had been too busy with flooding issues in Norman. I told him "that's great! -but my emergency started 10 days ago!" I wasn't impressed. I could never get a straight answer from anyone in the company on the cost of their services. Moving my stuff, storing it, cleaning it, and moving it back. When I tried to access my stuff, It took 4 days to gain access. I showed up unannounced, and saw the "Climate Controlled" storage I was promised. It was just a hot warehouse. Their doors were all open, and nobody was in the warehouse where my items were located, stacked up on the warehouse floor. After seeing that most of the boxes were only 1/3 full, I knew they were getting paid by the space my stuff took up. I called them and told them I was coming to get my boxes the next day. They didn't want me to do so, but I told them that since they couldn't tell me the cost of their services, I was taking the poorly packed boxes to a storage unit. I did so the next day, and tried to take my furniture, but they wouldn't let me do so, until they got paid. "Paid what?" I asked. I had no bill? Then they told me the bill was over $8,000 for moving 1/3 of my home. Are you serious? How much to store it I asked. They stated $4 a day, per storage vault. Then I saw a "vault" -it was a wooden crate 4'x6'x8' tall. I would have needed 30 vaults the way they packed. It would have cost me or my insurance over $3500 a month to store it. Are you serious? For my furniture alone, they told me $395 per month. That is nearly $2,400 for 6 months, Many of my boxes I discovered had been packed wet, and never dried out. I had mold growing on my shoes, etc. Where was the "we will clean and save your items?" I talked my insurance into cutting a check and I moved my furniture to storage, as well. $160 per month versus $3,600. These restoration companies are scamming the insurance companies. Nobody ever tells you a dollar figure until well into the experience. Then they say "we don't usually release customer's household goods until we get paid." This was the Project Manager's response to me when I asked to come get my stuff and move it. I recommend having a small moving company move your stuff, or better yet, friends & family, and don't let "the cleaners" take your clothes. They will charge your insurance more than the clothes are often worth. Don't sign any contracts!! There may be good companies out there to help you....but I haven't found them yet.
