The demolition went great. Then while removing the old linoleum from the kitchen floor, one of the workers accidentally smashed the glass oven door of our Jenn-Aire range. A replacement door was not available from the factory so we purchased a less expensive GE range to replace the Jenn-Aire range. We have not been compensated for this yet. The next day his hammer got loose again, and we punctured the living room wall. Contractor repaired this. Although we were very explicit that we wanted the prep work done for the tile correctly, so that there would not be problems in the future, the contractor failed to get the subfloor level. Consequently, when he installed the 18" porcelain tiles, they did not go down correctly. There are several raised spots in the floor, which are not only unsightly, but are actually tripping hazards.. This floor is going to have to be torn out and redone with level subfloor The wood he used to trim around the new floor was pine, even though the rest of the trim and cabinets in the house are oak. The door openings for the pantry were not sized properly to handle the 48" X 80" doors that were specified. The contractor failed to allow room for the door frames. This took three reworks before the doors would close properly.. Moving the electrical outlet from the back of the pantry to one of the new side walls was a disaster. The contractor wired the hot wire to the ground of the outlet, and he cut a live wire in the wall and left it. A major fire hazard. We hired another licensed electrician to do some electrical work that Tony's crew did not feel comfortable doing. We are grateful that our electrician was able to find and correct the electrical mishaps. Believe it, or not, our contractor plumbed the new kitchen faucet backwards. It took 3 weeks to get him to correct it. The new base for the granite counter top was installed originally like a work bench in a tool shop. The contractor had to redo this so we did not have a 2"X4" brace running at a 45° angle in the middle ot the countertop. When he rehung the flat screen TV, it was hanging crooked. He said that the brace was level, and he couldn't fix it. We got another person to come out to make the final adjustments so it could hang straight. They also broke the door to the entertainment center whcih sets below the TV.. The gutter guards went in well. We just want to be compensated for the damaged range and TV stand, and we want a new floor installed correctly..
Description of Work: UPDATE: Use this company with extreme caution! Our first choice for doing our kitchen remodel was Charles Hastilow, as we had used him in the past with most excellent results. Home Wizards Inc worked very hard to get our contract for this project. Tony Rutledge, VP of Home Wizards Inc was very prompt on returning phone calls, and he came out to review the project no less than 3 times to make sure he knew exactly what we wanted and to make recommendations. Home Wizards Inc lowered their first estimate to get the job. Since Tony was a personal friend of our son, and he advertised high ratings with Angie's List and the BBB, we decided to give him the contract. After signing the contract, it became very difficult to reach Tony, who was the company representative for any issues that arose. The poor communication with the vice president caused a lot of stress for his subcontractors and for us. Since my wife was home dealing with a chronic illness, she tried to help them out as much as possible. Although they swear otherwise, it became clear early in the project that the workers were not very experienced in the remodeling part of the business. I asked Tony to restrict his conversations to me, as the stress from this project was worsening her condition. The company has ruined our porcelain tile floor by not preparing the sub floor properly prior to installing the tiles that we had purchased prior to the start of the project.. After two haphazard attempts to fix the problem, we still have tiles that are uneven with lippage creating tripping hazards. The grout is also falling apart in several areas. The company's response to our attempt to resolve this conflict through Angie's List, is typical of our dealings with them from the start - NO RESPONSE to us. Although Tony gave us an insurance agent's name, he never authorized the agent to release any information to us. We will let you know if and when we find out how good his bond is. Although the company contends they were subject to verbal abuse, I can assure you that we never used abusive language, nor did we raise our voices with anyone from Home Wizards inc. It may not be pleasant to hear that your subcontractors were not performing quality work, or that something else was damaged, but that is not the usual definition of verbal abuse. Although several items were removed from the original scope of the project (installing sky tubes, relocating cabinets, installing under cabinet lighting, etc) the final project cost went up (instead of down as we expected) with no explanation. They did not even subtract the agreed upon costs for the damaged items during construction(Jenn-Air oven door and entertainment center door.) The only addition was a pantry shell, for which we purchased the materials via gift cards from Giant Eagle. We have the receipts. While is it true that we decided to go with in-stock doors from Lowe's (because the cost of the custom built doors was exorbitant), the size of the doors never changed from start to finish. According to the sales representative at Lowe's. "any good contractor would know that the rough opening for any style of door is always 2" higher and 1" wider than the doors themselves." It may have been painful for Tony to hear that, but it was not verbal abuse. The "unsubstantiated" electrical problems caused by Home Wizards Inc workers cost us an additional $150 to repair, and we are fortunate the cut live wires left in the wall did not catch fire. The cut wires were photographed by our licensed electrician, and were witnessed by his apprentice. The electrician showed us the pictures that he took with his cell phone, and he showed them to the contractor who referred him to us. We also have an electrical cover "blank" on our living room wall to cover the "unsubstantiated" access hole our electrician needed to make in order to remove the cut live wires that were left behind by Home Wizards inc workers. Since the contractor feels that he has met his contractual obligations, and he refuses to install the floor correctly, we will be pursuing other avenues to get this matter resolved.. We wish the best of luck to anyone who is brave enough to use this company in the future. The contractor started this project with great enthusiasm in early October, 2011, to: - remove a nonsupport wall between the kitchen and dining room - tile these two rooms and the adjoining great room with porcelain tile - install new wood trim and shoe molding around areas with new tile - build a shell for a pantry with two sets of French doors - do some minor electrical work - install a new kitchen faucet - install a base for a new granite countertop - relocate the flat screen television higher on the wall - replace the gutter guards The whole project was estimated to take two weeks with a completion date of Oct. 27, 2011. As of today, the issues with the floor have not been satisfactorally addressed The contractor demanded full payment on Dec. 27, 2011, and he threatened to place a mechanics lien against our property, if we did not comply. We assured him that we would be happy to pay when the job was done in a professional manner.

Response from Home Wizards Inc
A contract for home improvement work between the member and Home Wizards Inc. was entered into on October 9, 2011. The Description of Work did not include building a shell for a pantry with two sets of French doors as they have suggested. A day or so after the contract was signed I received a drawing on the back of a paper from them titled “Remodel Scope of Work” showing a pantry installation. This was not discussed, not in the signed contract, and was the 1st of many additions/adjustments to come from them. On 10/11/2011 the pantry from the drawing was discussed with my subcontractor in regards to redoing the pantry to make it into “butler” pantry. It went from a 36” to a 9 foot pantry after she had a conversation with a custom built closet company. At that time measurements were given to subcontractor and plans were made to go forth with the “butler” pantry. I received on 10/15 a 3rd revised plan for the “butler” pantry, again nothing in signed contract regarding any pantry, measurements for pantry, etc. but I was willing to work with the customer. After the “butler” pantry was built to customer’s specifications, she went to order the doors and found out they were $12,000, she then informed us she would not be purchasing said doors from the vendor she contacted. The pantry had to be built again to match measurements of doors she could afford. They were not charged for material used to rebuild the pantry 3 additional times. As a side note; every visit to the home she reinforced with me and the subcontractors that because of her immense pain and strong doses of medication, she was “hazy and in and out, so please forgive her, she may repeat of ask questions many times.” There is an email dated 10/9/11 from her highlighting this fact. My opinion is that this is the crux of the problems that were had between them and Home Wizards Inc. A replacement door for their oven was/is readily available through the manufacturer. It was her choice not to receive replacement door paid for by Home Wizards Inc. because her friends told her it would never seal the same. The manufacturer guaranteed that it would be like it was before. Since the door replacement was declined by her, Home Wizards Inc. agreed to the compensated amount stated in the punch out list and reflected in the total amended project cost. The underlayment was installed and porcelain tile laid as specified in the Contract dated 10/9. The underlayment was leveled to the extent that the tile could be laid. Subsequently, to appease customer’s wishes we repaired 2 areas of floor underlayment twice and relayed tile. Trim work, per Contract 10/9 was to initially be provided by homeowner. This was another of the many changes made by them. Once finding out that they couldn’t afford tube lights from another vendor (Capital City Daylighting), they asked me to provide the trim and labor in lieu of installing tube lighting per Contract 10/9. Trim was purchased by Home Wizards Inc., delivered to their home, shown to them, and stained with stain they selected. After installation, he expressed that he would have preferred oak trim. Home Wizards Inc. would have happily provided oak if this was expressed before the staining and installation of the trim. As demonstrated with the continuing adjustments to the pantry per the customer’s request, we are more than willing to satisfy reasonable customer’s requests. Regarding electrical issues, none have been substantiated by any type of proof, only the verbal communications by another contractor. Home Wizards Inc. was contracted to hang and level the mount for the t.v. only, not to position their electronics on the mount. We attempted to mount the t.v. but homeowner informed us he had no instruction on how to complete that part of the installation. The homeowner’s son had to look up installation instructions because none were available and it was beyond Home Wizards Inc. scope of work. The broken glass door of the entertainment center was not brought to my attention until all work was completed and we were compiling a “punch out” list. The total amended project cost reflected the compensation for new glass. In summary, Home Wizards Inc. has performed in a professional and workman like manner, has lived up to all of its contractual obligations, and wishes to be paid the full amended contracted amount from 12/7/11. Home Wizards Inc. feels that we have gone above and beyond in trying to satisfy the customer, working with their many changes as attested by documentation, charging minimal for these changes, and enduring much verbal abuse from them. As an explanation to why Home Wizards Inc. continually allowed changes to the contract and performed other work not listed in the contract, as well as trying to fix things deemed unlikeable, was only because the VP of Home Wizards Inc. is friends with their son.

Honestly, my own experience was not bad with this company. My neighborhood had experienced a lot of roof damage from several severe storms so on a recommendation several of my neighbors also used Home Wizards. We all got our roofs done around the same time. This part went well. Tony told all of us that he does other remodeling services as well. One neighbor had some work done by this company on interior doors. I saw the workmanship myself and it was terrible. Many of the doors do not close or won't stay closed. My other neighbor made the mistake of paying Tony $2500 up front to remodel a bathroom. That work started in July and the work is still not done and we are in November. The workmanship there is questionable at best. The guy doing the work did not use any edge tiles, he just cut the large tiles down to fit and now there are super sharp edges all over the bathroom and she has three kids! She is a single mother who has been severely taken advantage of. As I said, my personal experience was not terrible, but it is not worth taking the risk to use this company. I hope this helps!
