 + 0 moreThey were recommended by Angie's List and they were very good. Derek was very meticulous and the bookshelves are beautiful and have held up, and everything is fine. We were just very satisfied with the results. He was pretty easy to work with. The project was not obtrusive since he was able to do a lot of stuff off site. He was very thorough in understanding what we wanted.

 + 0 moreIt's the best thing we could have done to upgrade our Great Room. If you're looking for high quality custom woodwork, Brainard's Woodworking is for you. Derric is meticulous in his work and took time to understand what we were looking for. I inherited a large bronze sculpture that required special structural elements. He never saw the sculpture until he delivered the bookcase but he could not have imagined the final look any better. It's perfect! He installed special wiring and lighting to enhance the sculpture. He took the time to replicate the detail from the fireplace mantel into parts of the bookcase, too. The wood was exceptional...this is not substandard materials being used, that's for sure. This is custom all the way. It's refreshing to find someone who is an expert at his craft.
Description of Work: There was an underutilized nook next to our fireplace. Knowing it needed a built-in entertainment unit, we delayed having one made for over 6 years due to cost and inability finding a competent carpenter. After searching Angie's List, we made the decision to go with Derric's company. He was prompt, knowledgeable, and provided a fair quote. At first, we didn't understand why it would take the time needed to build the unit, but once we saw the final product, it was clear this was a unique bookcase that was truly "made to order".

 + 1 moreWe had been dreading changing to an HD TV in our media room as the entertainment furniture was specifically designed for a tube TV. The dimensions of flatscreens are much different than those of our 15-year old Sony. Derek was able to devise a way to mount and frame the new TV so that the exposed parts on the top and bottom were covered. It worked perfectly.
Description of Work: We had an old, custom entertainment center which needed to be retrofitted to accommodate a new flatscreen TV and new speakers. Derek did a flawless job of mounting the new TV and creating a frame for it so that the entertainment center looks like it was made for the new TV.

 + 1 moreDerek's original labor-cost estimate was based partly on a plan I gave him, which assumed more pre-made components and less customization that he ended up providing. His estimate also assumed that he would do only the sealing and staining that was essential before assembly; I would stain most of it after the balcony was finished. I got a lot more than that: He came up with a solution that was much more attractive than my design, and more closely matched the original. The repair work was more extensive than originally thought, because dry rot and other damage extended further than could be seen before the original balcony was taken apart. Then, because it's a lot easier to stain a structure as you go rather than wait until it's all assembled and less accessible, he just went ahead and did it. And, while he was up there, he filled in the damaged corner of a window frame overlooking the balcony. Then he presented me with a labor bill that wasn't one penny higher than the original estimate. Maybe, with his experience, he'd correctly anticipated some of the issues before estimating the cost; his estimate was quite a bit higher than one I'd received for another carpenter who, as it turned out, was unavailable to take on the project. All I know is, the new balcony looks great and I think Derek has provided good value as well as first-rate craftsmanship. (I did insist on paying a little extra for the staining, at least.) It's also worth noting that he always showed up when he said he was going to -- usually early in the morning, before anyone in the family got up, and he was invariably careful about not making any more noise than necessary. He was also conscientious about cleaning up afterward, and generally just a pleasure to work with. I'd recommend Derek Brainard to anyone looking for top-quality woodworking.
Description of Work: Repair and/or replacement of nearly every part of an exterior wood balcony. This included: custom manufacture of new support beam across the front, repair of support brackets extending from the wall, custom manufacture of newel posts, repair of 13 damaged spindles, custom manufacture of slanted bottom rails to match original design, cutting of new top rails, replacement of all flooring, and all associated sealing, staining and assembly.

 + 0 moreIt was an excellent experience. The shelves are absolutely flawless, they look like they were installed when the house was built. Derek's attention to detail is amazing. See attached pictures for close-ups of the ceiling and floor molding and cabinet detail. We had read other reviews before contacting Derek, and found that what they said was true: Derek takes his time, does the job right, and does it with a fine eye for detail. We have waited a long time to build our "dream" booksheves -- and Derek made that dream come true. Derek is very professional, he came back multiple times for measurements before installation to make sure everything was perfect. And he's just a very nice guy. This was an all around great experience. We would work with him again in a heartbeat.

When we left a message for en estimate he was out of town but his wife called us to let us know that and that he would return our call as soon as he was back in town. He came over for an estimate and measurements. He built the unit at his place and installed it on a Saturday morning (took about 5 hours). He was always very punctual and friendly. He is a true craftsman and his work was very detailed and precise. The unit looks as if it was built in when the house was built. It is beautiful. My sister and brother-in-law were very impressed and are remodeling their entryway and when that is done they will be contacting Derek to build their family a bench & hooks as well! Derek is highly recommended and we already have him coming back into our house to do some other projects. Thank you Derek!

 + -1 moreNeedless to say, I was surprised when Derek called at about 11 o'clock on Sunday morning to say the railing was finished and he could come over and install it. I brought my husband home from the hospital and Derek installed the beautiful railing, with 4 supports to be sure it was sturdy, that afternoon. It matched the rest of the wood perfectly. As one of my daughters said when she saw it, "He isn't just a carpenter, he's a master carpenter!" Derek did all of this on a Holiday weekend! I feel he really deserves your Super Service Award! He definitely was the answer to my prayer!
Description of Work: I got his name (and a few others) from the wonderful Angie's List employee over the phone. As I sat in the cafeteria in the hospital, the TV across the room showed people settling in downtown to enjoy the Red, White and Boom festivities. It was 2 p.m. on July 2nd and I needed a carpenter to come to make and install a railing on the upper part of the staircase so my husband could go upstairs to bed when he came home after surgery. We were told he could not do so without the support of that railing and the doctor had said he would probably go home tomorrow, Saturday, July 3rd. I looked at the list and said a little prayer to call the right person. I called Derek Brainard of Brainard's Woodworking For Your Home, the 3rd name on my list of handymen and carpenters. I told him I needed a railing put in and asked him if he'd be able to come. He said he was sorry, but he already committed to about 3 weeks of work and really couldn't do it until after that. He asked if I needed it right away and I explained our situation. Derek said, "Can I call you back?" He called me back and said he's see what he could do and would call me Saturday. Derek called me back at the hospital on Saturday, July 3rd, a day of parades and fireworks for local communities. In fact, Derek had to move the barricades for the block party on our street when he met me at the house to take measurements. (My husband's going home day had, luckily, been changed to Sunday.) Derek said he'd already checked on materials and could give me an estimate. He did measurements and consulted with my daughter and me about stain colors to match the banister on the lower half of the staircase after the turn at the landing. He gave me an estimate and said he'd try to get the railing done as soon as possible, but that probably wouldn't be until Monday at the very earliest since he'd need to cut it and give the coats of stain and finish a chance to dry as well.

 + -1 moreDerek did an excellent job and was very dependable and honest. We called to get an estimate. He returned our phone call the same day and came out the next day to give us an estimate. He return to do the work within 2-3 days. He repaired the areas on the rear window and front door trim. Areas were repaired, caulked, and repainted. Derek came back 3 times to insure that everything dried and the repair was made properly. He also repaired two interior door knob plates that were way out of alignment and wouldn't allow the door to latch closed. He was very professional and we were very pleased with his quality of work. We would definately call him again. We felt his rates were very reasonable. He takes a great deal of pride in his work.
Description of Work: Replace exterior wood trim on rear window and paint. Fix two locks on interior doors. Caulk, paint, and fill front door trim on exterior.

 + 0 moreExcellent craftsmanship and attention to detail - not necessarily the cheapest but the details are what what sets the work apart. High quality materials, solid structures (e.g. no corners cut with flimsy backs to bookcases - it was all of the highest standard), and wonderful touches. One slight negative would be that the work took a little longer than originally estimated (but the final product was worth the wait). Also, the installation took a few visits but Derek takes as long as is needed to make his customer happy!
Description of Work: Built-in bookcases around and over set of french doors. Units (one either side of the french doors) included storage cupboards in the bottom, set of drawers, and then several fixed book shelves above. Unit also included book shelf running above the french doors joining the two units either side. Custom fitted, floor to ceiling and painted.

 + -1 moreDerek was great! He arrived on time, worked steadily and I can say his work was high quality. He ran a few trips to Home Depot to make sure he had just the right wood, matched our exterior paint, and finished the job within 1 day. We had 2 areas of the trim around the garage that needed to be replaced and repainted. He completed those first, then tackled the back door wood under the threshold. This particular area had been quoted by another company before and they indicated $900 to replace the wood. Derek did a little more investigating into the issue, and it was not as bad as we thought. He estimated about $100 and he said he had the time, so we had him fix it right then. We will definitely use him again! He took a look at some entertainment center cabinets my kids had ripped the doors off of and we'll have him back to repair those after we settled into the new house...along with any other wood working issues that arise in the new house.
Description of Work: We were selling our house and a few exterior trim areas needed to be replaced and repainted due to rot. In addition, a wood area underneath our backdoor threshold needed to be replaced.

He responded to all my calls, usually within a few hours, but never more than the next day. He always showed up exactly when he said he would, and called if he was going to be even a few minutes late. He was a pleasure to work with and I would certainly use him again if the need arose.

After an initial measurement, he returned for a second measurement to make sure the top of the server/buffet would fit as close to the walls as possible which would minimize the need for caulk to mask out-of-plumb walls. The quality of the work exceed our expectations. Derek's attention to detail is exceptional. Even the old trim he removed and reinstalled looked better after he reinstalled it. Friends have also commented on the quality the workmanship. We have worked with few craftspersons who were as proud of their work as Derek. We would recommend him without reservations.
Description of Work: Derek built a server/buffet with drawers,shelves and raised panel doors along a dining room wall (about 11 feet long) and in a corner of the dining room a corner cabinet with shelves and glass doors on the top and raised panel doors on the bottom. In addition he replaced the casing around a door leading to a porch. All work was stained to match existing wood trim.

 + -1 moreI contacted Mr. Brainard and he was very prompt in returning my call. He came over measured the doors, as they were not standard, we discussed types of doors that could be installed and we set a date for him to return the next week to install them. I am choosing to stain them myself as I enjoy doing that type of work and he advised me where to go and when to do it. I am very satisfied with the quality of the work that he performed, the doors are perfect and make both closets look so much better. He doesn't know this but I actually got another quote that would have installed three doors for the price of what he quoted me for two. I decided to go with him because I was very impressed with his attention to detail and the quality of the doors that I received, I have two more closets to do and will definitely call him back in the spring to perform that work.
Description of Work: I have the old fashion accordian closet doors in my home and they have come off of their tracks and in some cases some of the panels were missing. I wanted to have new closet doors installed that move back and forth over each other instead of coming out into the hallway when open.

Description of Work: Derrick did a great job of crafting custom shelves along our windows along with a wood cat tree for our cats to reach them. The shelves, supports, and tree are made out of cedar, poplar, and birch. It's difficult to describe, but they turned out great and match the woodworking along our window frames so well it looks like it was part of the original installation

 + -1 moreI called Derek Brainard from Brainard Woodworking and he gave me an estimate in a timely manner. His estimate was reasonable. He completed the work in two days. Now everything looks perfect and "new" again. His work was professionally done. All along the process he made sure that I was satisfied with what he was working on. When the projects were completed, he had cleaned up everything so that there was no mess at all for me to pick up. I appreciated his punctuality and his quality work along with his professionalism. I would definitely hire him again when I have more work to be done.
Description of Work: There were several things we needed done. Dry wall repair in our garage. Rebuilding of the inside of our kitchen cabinet under the sink.Caulking around the kitchen counter top and caulking around the kitchen sink. Attaching wood to outside space between door and patio step.

He was very punctual, and his job is flawless. While he was here I asked him to reattach some moulding that was loose, and he also did an awesome job at that. I will call him again when I decide to do the bookcases.

If it makes anyone feel better about having someone they do not know come to their home, Derrick is a substitute bus driver for a local school district. This means he has passed the BCI background check!
Description of Work: Derrick reconfigured some selving in the pantry and refinished a custom cabinet that was damaged and discolored by water.

 + -1 moreOnce again, Derek was outstanding! Out of everyone I could have called, I instinctively called Derek first when I pulled up my specific need on Angie's List. He surfaced #1, but responded to me so promptly and assured both myself and my appliance installer that this problem of space we were having could be easily resolved by trimming down our cabinent to make room for the overhead microwave. I can't believe how quickly we were able to correct the problem and move forward. I give Derek an A+ for such prompt service and quality of worksmanship, but he's such a NICE GUY!! Please call Derek if you need anything involving wood completed.
Description of Work: We were having an overhead microwave installed and in order to make it fit under the regulations per the installer, we needed 2 inches of space created. So, Derek was able to remove our cabinent and cut off 2 inches total from the top and bottom of the cabinent to make it fit correctly. The distinction with Derek is that I called him on Thursday afternoon (10/15/09)with my dilemna and he was able to come to my house first thing the following Friday morning (10/16/09) around 7:30am to accommodate my morning appointment from 9am. He was extremely professional, very punctual, prompt and just a very sincere person. Derek was able to bend his schedule once again to bring back my cabinent on Monday, 10/19/09 rather than the agreed upon Tuesday, 10/20/09, to finish the job, installing the cabinent so that the other team of installers could install the microwave. Everything was completed successfully and what I thought was going to be a real disaster on Thursday, was in fact a very quick solution and happy ending thanks to Derek! I would highly recommend him to anyone needing any kind of carpentry work involving wood, cabinents, trim, etc.
