Update: Not sure how this review was originally entered, but I don't recall writing it. Their work was fair, they were flexible to add on the garage at the end. You get what you pay for- we got somewhere between 1-2 weeks worth of painting done done for ~$3000. On the surface it all looked good, den should have been skimmed (you can see old paint drippings in the dark blue color), and some hardware pieces weren't removed prior to painting (example: toilet paper holder was taped and painted around instead of being taken off in the half bathroom (haven't bothered looking elsewhere). We also used them to paint/stain our deck. That was an additional $1000. We shared our selected color with them (it was a semi-transparent) and when they picked up the paint they just had the Sherwin-Williams store convert it to solid since the deck was already a reddish color. He didn't consult us and ultimately the deck turned out bright orange. Long story short, after arguing that he should have discussed it with us he finally agreed to repaint the deck with a solid color of our picking (I had cancelled the payment). Once it was finished he was paid in full (we also paid for the additional paint needed). Had it not been for the "he-said, she-said" arguments I had to have with him over the deck I probably would have used him again. OVERALL: his work is good, just make sure you are in full and complete agreement in advance over exactly what you're getting and on what the paint is. One additional Pro is that he lets you keep all the remaining paint at the end.

Response from James Edward Custom Painting LLC
The reason [member name removed]. doesn't remember writing a review on my company back in July of 2013 when services were rendered is because his wife was the one who wrote it.. She was very happy with our services. In her original review she went on to explain what a good job we did painting the interior of their new home. Here we are 1 year later and [member name removed]decided to delete and rewrite the entire review and complain about 1 bad wall in his office and a little bit of bad cut in around a toilet paper holder. Had mike notified me there was a problem we would have promptly returned and corrected any problems free of charge. We don't always take down bathroom hardware like towel bars and toilet paper holders. If they were not properly installed then they will not reinstall properly. We provide discount solutions to homeowners looking to save money. They had quotes as high as $7000 to do the work we did for $3000. Personally I feel like taping around a few things in the bathrooms rather then removing is acceptable for discount pricing. Originally they liked the interior painting so much they immediately decided to contract with me to refinish their badly neglected deck that they inherited with the purchase of their home. The previous owners had used paint on the deck and it was peeling down to bare wood. The exposed bare wood was cracking and splintering badly. I recommended the deck surface be power washed with a stripper to remove the loose paint. Then I recommended the deck be power sanded to eliminate splinters and then be stained with a solid color stain due to the poor condition of the deck. [member name removed] wife told me that she trusted my professional opinion, agreed with my proposal, provided me with a stain color, and then we began work on the deck. It is true we had the manager of Sherwin Williams convert the stain color from a semi-transparent to a solid color. The solid color stain was part of the original proposal that was given to [member name removed]wife. Sometimes when you pick a color it might look nice on the small swatch in the store but once its applied to a deck you might not like it. The color they picked was an orange cedar color. I agree the deck looked a bit orange but that is the color they picked. We merely had it put into a solid base instead of the transparent. Decks reach a point where they become so weathered that semi transparent stains really aren't an option. You need something that is going to be more solid to help fill in the exposed rough grain. I had already explained this to [member name removed] wife and that is the reason she agreed for us to use a solid color stain. Her main concern was the safety of their children getting splinters in their feet. There was clearly a mix up between what [member name removed]expectations where and that of his wife's. When [member name removed] didn't like the color they picked he canceled payment on the check without even calling me and letting me know there was a problem. Once he made sure the money was taken back from my account he called to explain there was a problem with the color. He used the fact we had the color converted from semi to solid to leverage us to stain his deck a completely different color. They went from an orange cedar color to a very dark brown that matched the trim color on their house very nicely. Mikes told me the reason for picking the dark brown color was because it hid the large splits in the deck boards nicely. With the orange color you could see the dark voids of the open cracks in the wood. So which one is it? He didn't like the orange color because it was too orange? or because it showed to many of the flaws in his neglected deck? Either way it doesn't really matter because we came back out and stained the deck a second time free of charge. I did ask them to pay for the stain because they did change the color completely. And to address [member name removed]comment about "he said she said" bickering.... That was merely me explaining what his wife agreed with me to have done and then him getting mad because it was different then what he wanted. If you have a problem with a contractors work please let them know so they can have an opportunity to fix things before you slander their business online.

It was a terrible experience. He didn't remove any of the hardware or fill any of the holes in the walls before he primed the walls, he just primed around everything and didn't prep the walls for priming like I thought he should have. He also left a huge mess, and when I confronted him about the issues so we could get them resolved, he sent nasty e-mails back to me so I just paid him and moved on so it would just be over.
Description of Work: He was to prime the interior of the home so my sister could paint.

Response from James Edward Custom Painting LLC
The customer was selling her fathers house and her real estate agent recommended that it be painted prior to any open houses. She was referred to me by a very large Real Estate company whom I perform services for regularly. Upon providing an estimate and after spending over an hour on the phone during a series of phone calls, she decided that she wanted to try and save money and have her sister-in law paint the interior of her home. She explained that they were going to use a paint and primer in one type paint and try and paint the house with one coat of paint to freshen it up. At that point I reminded her that excessive nicotine stains on the ceilings and walls would bleed through the paint in a matter of days. The estimate I gave her included priming and painting the walls and ceilings of the home properly so that the smoke damage and odor would be corrected properly. The primer required to block the nicotine stains is a shellac base primer and is very toxic in nature. Keeping in mind that my customer was trying to save money I offered my services to handle just the priming aspect of the job so that things could be done right. I eliminated the risk that her sister in law would inhale any toxic fumes from the primer. My company has the proper safety equipment and experience to deal with that type of scenario. The owner agreed to hire us to prime/block the nicotine stains. That was all my company was hired to do. There was no agreement to remove any hardware. Had I been hired to do the painting then hardware would have been removed and the holes would have been patched. This part of the job was her sister in laws responsibility. When the owner notified me and told me there had been a mess left behind I returned to the property with her permission to inspect the job. I arrived to find her sister in law painting with no drop cloths on the floor. The entire time I was there her sister in law was complaining to me about how much work she had to do and how cheap she was doing it. At that point I called the customer who lives in another city to let them know what was going on over at the house and that any mess was not from my company. At that point she told me that she wished she would have just hired me to do the whole job. She went on to explain that her sister in law was hard to deal with and that she knew that if she just hired me to do the whole job that things would have went fine. She apologized for her sisters in laws behavior and the call ended on a pleasant note. Two days later the owner called me asking for some of her money back. She said that she feels like she over paid to have the priming done compared to what she paid her sister in law to do that painting. I explained to her that she agreed to have the work done for that price and that there would be no discount. Just because her sister in law who is not a professional painter worked cheaper, doesn't mean she is entitled to a discount for the work that my company did. At that point I felt she was acting unreasonably and I ended all phone contact with the customer. She sent me some threatening emails in which I only responded to tell her that there would be no partial refund. Trying to work with this customer was a difficult process. She asked the same questions repeatedly which I patiently and politely answered repeatedly. Most contractors would have walked away from the job but I felt obligated to help this woman because she was referred to me by the real estate company that I continue to serve on a routine basis. Had I felt that I could afford to discount the job I would have. I am a small business and my profit margin on this job was low. Out of the $1,250.00 the job was worth, $600.00 of that was materials. That left us with $650 for two workers and 2 and half days of work. My kind heart sometimes gets me into sticky situations. This customer failed to mention the freebie we threw in by painting the ceiling of her front porch. This is definitely a situation where "nice guys finish last".

Gave me a price over the phone and a date to start the job. I had to Schedule someone to come over and be here when they arrived for the job. Upon seeing the job in person he said it was going to be more than he thought ( which I understood ) So we rescheduled a new date but he cancelled and we set another date. It was a no show and he did not answer my callls and messages to the company. So I found a new company that did an excellent job
Description of Work: Came out and estimated the job then talked about a return date to perform the work but then never returned my phone calls.

Jim provided a great estimate and completed the job for the same amount. He is very professional and courteous and trustworthy. I had to leave twice leaving him alone and this was not a problem. He arrived promptly each day working diligently & so quietly that I hardly knew he was here. He cleaned up afterwards each day so there was absolutely no interruption of the household while he was working. His partner helped him on day 2 and 3 and was also very courteous . Jim was supposed to come back and paint another bedroom. He called to confirm the date and time and then did not show up . I called him back and he did not return the call. Upon closer inspection of the paint job i found paint drips in mutiple places that I had not noticed before.
Description of Work: Painted a bathroom and bedroom and trim and hallway and did some drywall repair. These rooms had not been painted in over ten years. They required two coats and one coat of kilz on the bedroom walls.

Response from James Edward Custom Painting LLC
We charged $350.00 to paint a bedroom in the customers house. The price was quoted over the phone based off the room dimensions. I arrived to find the room jam packed with furniture. We could only paint one wall at time before having to move furniture, boxes, shelves, etc. The walls and trim were in terrible condition which was not disclosed during our phone conversation. I stuck to the price I quoted over the phone even though there was twice the amount of work that was expected. I brought in a helper on the second and third days just to get the work done and get out of there. I could have handled the situation better when I was called back to do more work but I was busy on other jobs that were actually profitable. I should have explained to her what the problem was. Since this experience I have began working on fine tuning my customer service skills.
