Ryan came to my home to provide a written estimate. He arrived on time, was outgoing, pleasant and professional. He agreed to do the work as described, including prepping the walls, repairing peeling dry wall tape along the vaulted ceiling, repairing nail holes and popped nails, as well as to take down and re-hang 124" draperies in the dining area since I'm terrified of heights. The quality of the paint was important to me since I had saved a long time to have the work done and needed it to last. I like Benjamin Moore (BM) "Aura" paint, but he told me it dries too quickly and was too difficult to work with and that he "always" used BM "Regal" paint, for which he provided a brochure. I was familiar with it and happy with it's quality and we set a date for the work. His estimated time-to-completion was 3 days. Ryan stopped in briefly on the first day as they were setting up and agreed to accommodate my request to add the small entry and hall to the job. He also demonstrated how they would repair popped nails. He told me he expected to be finished in 2 days but would allow for the original three in case they were needed. His two painters were prompt, polite, quiet and professional and worked efficiently. They masked, laid out canvas dropcloths, moved and draped furniture, and began to paint. The work was completed in 2 days. At the end of the project, one of the painters pointed out some blisters in the finish, scattered in spots around the walls. He told me they would probably settle on their own and to give them a few days. If they didn't, he assured me they would be back to address them. On general exam, the job looked good. They did a great job repairing the dry wall tape and cutting-in under the ceilings. However, on close exam, most of the popped nails had not been repaired, but painted over. There were numerous areas where paint had bled or dripped onto woodwork and mouldings, one area over a door where only a single coat of paint had been applied and the old color showed through, and the holes left in the window trim by old hardware had not been repaired as discussed, but painted over as well. I also discovered that the can of leftover paint they left behind was BM "Ben" paint, which according to the BM website is a less expensive, lower quality paint than the "Regal" I had paid for. Also, the blisters never "settled". The painters promptly arranged a time to return and worked dilligently to repair the blisters. I pointed out the popped nails, and the painter told me that he had never been told to repair them, but set about doing so anyway. He also applied the second coat of paint to the underpainted area and scraped paint off the ends of the wood banister. After another return trip and another unsuccessful attempt to repair the blisters, Ryan returned himself and was successful in doing so. At that time, I pointed out my displeasure with the use of "Ben" paint and with the unrepaired popped nails (with more hostility than I intended, for which I appologized). He told me that they had spent "four hours prepping the walls", that he "always use(s) Ben" paint and that he had never had a customer "quibble" over details like I did. He reimbursed the $36 dollars he owed me (slapped $40 on the kitchen island and told me to "keep the change"). First, I suspect that if I owed him $36 he wouldn't consider it quibbling. Second, if the original job estimate was 3 days and it ended up taking 2, why was prep time limited to only 4 hours when that clearly wasn't enough time to complete it? Finally, as a nurse, I don't consider any of my client's needs or requests to be "quibbling". I simply consider that to be good customer service. In conclusion, I would rate Ryan's workers highly on professionalism, but not Ryan. I was not happy with the quality of work initially done, but I was impressed with how dilligent they were in correcting it. However, I would not do business with this company again because I do not feel that Ryan was entirely honest with me.
