We interviewed a number of contractors to do an interior remodel job and selected Doug Minerva because he had a lot of creative ideas to offer. However after the deal was signed, we realized quickly we'd made a big mistake. The project was delayed right from the start. Minerva would go weeks without responding to calls, texts or emails. At one point we were certain he'd abandoned our job and we hired a new contractor. When his crew did show up, they treated our house with reckless disregard, at one point turning off the heat in the dead of winter over a weekend. We're lucky the pipes didn't burst. His crew also left the door unlocked, regularly spilled coffee on various floors throughout the house, and left hundreds of cigarette butts in our front and back yard. When they reconnected our washer and dryer, they hand-tightened the gas and water lines so both leaked! Minerva also billed us thousands of dollars for unapproved line items. Every time we received an invoice, there were overcharges and surprise line items that were not discussed in advance. The worst part about dealing with Doug Minerva is that he took responsibility for none of this. It was his office manager's fault that the billing was wrong. It was his construction guy who dumped the coffee. He didn't know who to blame about the heat being turned off. He claimed it was OUR fault that he wasn't communicating. Still not sure I understand that one. There are lots of contractors available for hire in New Jersey. Chose any one but this guy.

Response from Minerva Finishes
We would like to respond to Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s review by first stating that the project was delayed from the start since the customer was asking for a custom made beam that we had to research and get certified and with todays supply and demand this obviously took some extra time and we kept you informed the whole time even giving you different options and beam choices. Our crews have been on many jobs and never treat any home with disregard and even while the house was a construction site the guys are always told to clean up after themselves on a regular basis and remove all trash daily. In fact we actually we removed extra trash for you on several occasions and carried large items to the curb that you couldn't manage at no additional cost. Unfortunately the heat did get shut off and we are not sure how that happened either we were not the only contractors working at the house, but thank goodness nothing did arise from that situation. In response to our guys not securing the house we are not sure if this happened and how because our foreman are very responsible about making sure that every job site is safely secured before leaving everyday. The washer and dryer reconnection was done by another sub contractor that you hired if we would have done the flooring as proposed and moved the appliances we would have certainly made sure that the appliances were reconnected properly. Doug and the office manager and foreman were in daily contact with the owners until they tried to micromanage everything and change prices and negotiate everything constantly that problems started to arise. Unfortunately if we were in full control of the job as planned and it went ahead as proposed I strongly believe you would not be writing the negative review you did. As you can see with all of the problems that you had when you tired to get a deal and micromanage it didn't pay off. The Minerva Team

Let me preface this review by stating that we had a long term relationship with Minerva Painting that included several jobs over a ten year period.. We had always been very happy with the quality of work until we engaged them to paint a steel tub and plastic surround in one of our bathrooms. The bathroom job was done in May 2011 and included a one year warranty. They had to return once after the initial painting to touch up several parts of the tub and surround. That was done without any problems. There were a few over-spray issues which we didn't complain about and took care of ourselves. Even though we didn't feel that the overall results compared favorably with the quality of prior Minerva jobs, we felt we could live with the results. In January of this year we noticed that the paint applied to the bathtub started to flake off exposing the original finish. Needless to say we were unhappy and we reached out to Minerva to see if anything could be done to solve the issue. I left several phone messages and e-mails but never received any response. I can't argue with the fact that the problem showed up after the warranty period had passed. However the total lack of response when compared with our previous experience with Minerva has left us somewhat baffled. At this point we see no other option but to replace the tub and surround. Of course the reason we went with the painting in the first place was to delay that for a few years.

From the first call until the job was over it was a pleasure working with Minervas. We needed someone to get in quickly and get a job done in one day as we had people moving into the property the next day. Not only was Doug able to accommodate from a timing perspective but he was also very fairly priced and didn't increase the cost even when the job turned out to be a little bigger than expected. Pleased with the quality of the work. All in all, very happy working them and would definitely use them again.

Our overall experience working with Minerva Finishes was a real pleasure. The crew was polite, courteous and very neat. The transformation in the kitchen was incredible with the Venetian plaster on the walls and the counter tops refinished the room looks amazing. The Venetian plaster in the kitchen was done in a beige tones and the counter tops were done in off white, brown and hint of turquoise running through it, which really added a nice accent to the kitchen. The foyer looks great as well and the custom trim work really made a huge difference. We choose a deep red color for the walls and the trim was painted in an off white in the foyer and the color combination looks amazing. We were very happy with all the work that was done. We will be definitely using Minerva Finishes in the future and would highly recommend them!!!!

The overall work was superior, everything turned out beautiful. Their products are incredible, we had several contractors come out to give us ideas and estimates for the work we were looking to have done. Minerva Finishes' had the best products, no other contractor gave us the insight we were looking for. The venetian plaster is an incredible product, very durable, it has a beautiful shine to it, we get so many complements on our foyer. The faux finishes they did looks like something you would see at a fancy restaurant. The knock down finish is something I never seen anywhere, it's very durable, perfect for our basement. The crown modeling and shadow boxing makes such a difference in a room, it made our dining room look very rich. We were very pleased with the work. We found Minerva Finishes to be very professional, polite, and responsive. They answered our questions and concerns along the way, which was very important to us. They did samples for us of the products and colors we choose. They do very clean work. Their products are all green products, this was very important to us. We plan to do more interior as well as exterior work to our home this spring and we plan to have Minerva Finishes do the work. We are looking forward to working with them again, especially the ideas they will have for us! I definitely recommend this contractor. This contractor brings the ideas to you!
Description of Work: My husband and I decided to have a lot of work done this year. We hired Minerva Finishes to do all the work. All the work completed was interior. We had the following work done: Foyer - Red Venetian Plaster was applied with a gold overlay. The finished product turned out beautiful, it is a green product, which we were happy about. Kitchen - A Tuscon faux finish was applied, with a chair rail, and all our trim was replaced. The color is exactly the color we wanted. Dining Room - A suede finish was done, we choose a color from the faux finish for the color. We also had crown molding, and shadow boxing done. The shadow and crown modeling turned out beautiful as well. Main Bath - A faux finish was applied to the walls. Finished Basement - A Knock Down finish was done in gray and white. The finish gives such a different look to a room.

I contacted their office to schedule an estimate and was able have an estimate right away. Doug Minerva came to my home, he was courteous, helpful and made suggestions on the areas to be painted, such as doing an accent color on the main wall in the Great Room and adding trim to make counter tops to make it more decorative. Extremely professional from start to finish. They arrived at their scheduled time .They cleaned up well at the end of each day and put all moved furniture and appliances back to where they belonged. The job was completed in a week and the crew was polite and considerate the entire time. We are very happy with the work that was completed in our home. Everything looks great and I get some many compliments on my counter tops!!! We would highly recommend this contractor.

It started out fine and I left the sliding door open so they could come in when I wasn't there, i had tought it would be every day but it was not, so house was unlocked withno one there. At one point my cat got out which I repeatly told them to shut garage door if door from house to garage is open, had to ask several time for the stuff to be done that was on the estimite. there are a lot of spots in each room that are smeared. Doug said he would be on site but I never saw him after that. The one painter said he would like to buy my power washer and I told him ok but see if it works first, well one day it was gone and I have not heard from him. Contacted Minerva's and never got aan answer I did however receive an answer about 2 months later saying the outlook was working right , ok? so I reply and asked again if she could look to see if trim was inclued, because it said it one the estimite not all but some. She said she would talk to Jim but since then I have heard nothing, again! It took a total of almost 3 weeks for this to be done. The deck that was repaired in the spring is now showing wear already I don't think they used ceder but I think I was charged for it.
Description of Work: Paint for the entire house except 1 room, deck repair and stain.4 doors stained and a front door that I thought would be both sides but only one was dine. They put 3 light fixture up for me but took the old ones.

Response from Minerva Finishes
In response to the complaint that has been filed against our company. The member for work that was performed in her house. When Doug met with the member she wanted to remove the deck and Doug told her that the handrail needed to be reinforced which was on her contract and after removing the handrail we saw the additional boards that were rotten and needed to be replaced. We showed her the boards that needed to be replaced and completed the work. The boards on the deck that were replaced with Red Western Cedar which was purchased from Medford Cedar Products, Inc. I have enclosed a copy of the receipt for your records which the client was provided with a copy. We contacted Chip Scheibner in regards to this complaint, he meet with Doug on site to inspect the boards and confirmed they are cedar. Enclosed is a letter from Medford Cedar Products confirming his finding on the wood that was replaced. This wood was additional work that was not included in the original contract. The cost of $952.60 includes the cost of the materials for #13 Red Western Cedar boards and the labor for removing the old deck boards and cutting and installing the new deck boards. We used Cabot decking stain on the deck. Unfortunately, with the deck being exposed to sun and elements it needs to be maintained. The deck needs to be cleaned with a chemical. The member also mentions about time frame it took to complete her job which she said it was a month or over. The job started on July 2, 2009 and was completed on July 21st. We did miss July 3rd as the holiday fell on a Saturday and our employees were off for the holiday. The other days that were missed were July 16th and 17th due to an employee being out sick. Unfortunately an employee being out sick does affect our schedule at times. The nail pops and cracks the member is speaking in reference to could be due to a numerous things such as structure, roof, settlement and existing nail pops. The member did have an addition added onto her house and mention to us prior to starting the job the roof needed to be replacement. We were unaware about the situation about the power washer that she mentioned that a former employee Jim of ours took. This employee has moved of state. We have spoken to the other painters that were working there at the time the member also have Jim a bike and there was another transaction with an air compressor. She mentioned that Doug Minerva, owner was not on site. Mr. Minerva does not physically work on the job sites, he does on the site inspections.
