Very poor job and incredibly unprofessional. We hired John off of a recommendation from our plumber. He came in an gave us an estimate on gutting our shower. He said he was doing another job and would fit us in during his lag time. He said it would take about 3 days to gut the shower and then 3 more to finish. He began August 10th and gutted the entire shower in 3 days. He then debated how to finish the edges outside. He recommended doing a wooden fram around the shower which was a bad idea. He then left and Irene hit. He postponed the end by a month after promising to be done by August 30. He said closer to September 30. He hired a subcontractor to wire a light in the shower. It was done rough shod and out of code. Very poor and incredibly sloppy. He then came back and agreed to work the frame around the shower in tile. He began demolishing the tiles around the shower and cracked tiles further along the wall. The tiles were from the 30's. He ruined the wall and then said he could not fix it. He then abandoned the project and left us with a gutted shower and cracked wall. We had to then gut the entire bath, hire other contractors to finsih the bath and what was originonally going to cost us around $6,000 cost us almost $20,000 for a total bathroom remodel. I have never written a poor review for anyone. This is necessary since he abanndodned us after charging us $3700 and ruining the 1930's tiles we wanted to keep. We would never recommend him and would recommend he notbe used or you get a performance bond prior.
Description of Work: John gutted our shower and then cracked the tiles around our shower and abandoned the job. He had hurt himself and got tied up in another job and just walked out on our contract and left us with a gutted shower and badly cracked tiles. We had to hire other contractors to fix this after we gutted the entire bath ourselves. We had onl planned on doing the shower. Truly disappointed and would recommend he not be used or be contracted with penalties for abandonment or not meeting his obligaitons

Response from John Dalessio Fine Carpentry
While I usually do not respond to hearsay or gossip stories on the internet or magazines I will when a disgruntled unhappy person lies, manipulates the facts or leaves out important information relative to the story. I have sent email threads to the editor that support my story which I doubt will be included here. In August of 2011 I was referred to (Member)and his “life partner” (Partner) to repair a leaking shower base. The bathroom was in rough shape and should have been gutted from the beginning. There were holes in the wall tiles and the plumbing supply for the toilet and toilet had been replaced. I recommended gutting the bath because patching in new tile to old in this situation was not going to work. They said it was ok because they were going to remodel the bathroom anyway next year and it was just the shower they were interested in. So we agreed on terms and scope of work. The shower was gutted, plumbing was roughed in and a new shower light was installed. Then hurricane Irene hit at the end of August. I had lost power at my house and had severe flooding. I took off work for a week to get my house in order. Shortly after the storm I had ruptured my right bicep tendon and needed to have emergency surgery to re-attach it. I was out of work for two months. During this time I kept in contact with (Partner) and tried to get the work completed. Five weeks after surgery with one good arm and one in a brace, I closed up the shower walls and prepped it for tile. I did this all against the surgeons orders just to keep my customer happy. I explained to (Partner) that with the circumstances I could not complete the job and suggested sub-contracting the remaining work. He agreed and I met with two tile setters. The contractors didn’t want to tie in the new to old. What (Partner) and Marty wanted to do was just technically impossible to do. I made a few suggestions to make it work temporarily since they were going to remodel the bathroom anyway. (Partner) had a fit like a little child and demanded it be completed this way whish was not going to work. At this point the only way to make it work was to remove all the tiles on the bathroom and just drywall the walls or install beadboard since they were going to remodel it anyway. (Partner) agreed and wanted a price and time to complete the project. I was professional and honest with (Partner). We were at a point where the work completed and the payment schedule was in sync. I explained due to the circumstances with my arm and work schedule that I can’t complete the project with the additional work added. The best thing was to hire a new contractor to complete the entire project and he agreed. I admit that due to uncontrolled circumstances this project did not go as planned. I did my best and remained professional at all times and tried to get the project completed. As for Marty’s story, you can see he was just out to bash me. He lied and left out important information. I have emails and pictures to support my story. And in fact, one of the emails (Partner) specifically says he wants me to complete the work. As for the quality of work, his claim is absolutely false. The work was top notch. In fact the plumber said the shower work was not ripped out and that the new contractor they hired, tiled right over the existing tiled floor. Those tiles will be popping up before you know. Maybe Angie’s list should add a black list for customers who fabricate stories, lie, are difficult to deal with and don’t pay their bills so contractors don’t get screwed. Thank you for the opportunity to tell my side of the story. John Dalessio
