Only one, Absolute Air Quality, responded to my phone call in a timely manner.
The owner, Fred, spoke with me at length about what would likely need to be done to clean up and restore our fully finished and carpeted basement. I was immediately impressed with his compassion and knowledge. He even suggested that our insurance company might help to pay for some or all of the cost involved. He also understood our concern about the health risks involved in allowing the moisture and mold to remain and scheduled our initial free consultation for just a few days after my initial phone call.
In addition to assessing what needed to be done on the inside, Fred also took a walk around the outside of the house and pointed out areas of concern with the leaders, gutters and drainage. He fixed these items at no additional cost.
The damage to the basement was extensive. Hydrostatic pressure had forced water through the foundation and soaked three carpeted rooms, one connecting hallway (also carpeted), several cardboard boxes, damaged drywall and ruined our washer and dryer.
Within ten days of my initial phone call, Fred and Absolute Air Quality were on the job.
Tim and Shane did the packing and moving. They were very careful and respectful of our possessions and consulted me about the handling of every damaged item or anything they had questions about. I had final say on what was to be kept, what should be salvaged if possible and what was to be discarded.
We were on the verge of having the drywall installed when we were hit with another severe rainfall, courtesy of Tropical Storm Lee. Water came up through the foundation again.''
It was at this point, after drying out our basement a second time, that Fred said this water incursion would continue with every hard rain unless we took steps to have the basement waterproofed. He said it was in our best interest to have a sump pump system installed and he could not, in good conscience, continue his work until that had been addressed. Otherwise, we?d just be throwing good money after bad.
We hired a waterproofing company and a sump pump system comprising two pumps was installed in mid November.
Installation of the waterproofing system revealed further water damage had been done in the family room: the third of the three carpeted rooms in the basement. Damage had also been done to the drywall. When the drywall was removed, it was discovered that studs and sill plates needed to be rebuilt and it had to be done without drilling any holes, otherwise, it would compromise the drainage system for the sump pumps.
Work re-commenced on the basement in December and it now included the restoration of the family room, in addition to the storage room, office and laundry room initially contracted for. A second contract was drawn up for the additional work.
The laundry room was the first to be completed (at our request), but the other rooms followed shortly thereafter.
At all times, Fred did his best to keep the costs down without compromising the high quality of his work.
He also did not hesitate to let us know when a task was outside his area of expertise, as was the case with the floor treatment.
After the basement floor was finished, Fred sent Tim, Shane, Charlie and Lee to move our belongings from the garage back into the now-finished basement.. Lee also did the finish carpentry in the office, transforming the bit of drywall needed to conceal the drainage pipe into a built-in pedestal for an old-model TV.
It was a long process to restore the basement, but Fred and Absolute Air Quality were with us every step of the way, from beginning to end.
