My husband and I picked out the new cabinets, flooring, and tiles ourselves. The problems began almost immediately. When my husband had ordered the bamboo flooring, he had been assured by the salesman at the lumber place that the bamboo flooring we had ordered was one that they kept plenty of in stock. But, as we weren't sure of what trim pieces to buy, we were told that they would definitely be available. So, Dan went to the lumber place one night early on to get the bullnose. Apparently, they were out. Dan phoned us up and started yelling at us, saying that he never should have taken the job since he wasn't in complete control of the ordering, etc. and he was going to lose some other work if this job got delayed. My husband went to the lumber place, and special ordered some product that would be there the next day, so Dan wouldn't be delayed. As it turns out, even though we spent the extra money to get the trim pieces to Dan the next day, he didn't install them until a few days later. One of the new cabinets that Dan tried to install was not a good fit; it hit the ceiling. Dan wasn't happy about the delay in getting a new one, and made some snide comments on several occasions about the incompetence of the company from whom we bought the cabinets. He started the first of many tirades with "I'm not making any money." We did not measure for the kitchen tile ourselves, but relied on the company from whom we ordered the tile. We ran short of some of the tiles used for a subway effect. Dan blew up over this, but we were able to move forward by just cutting the remaining tiles in half. So, when the bullnose tile ran out before the job was finished, he walked off the job, after yelling at my husband. So, my husband ran out and found some bullnose, but the color was off a little; Dan came back the next day and installed it. I wasn't happy with the color difference and telephoned Dan to have him come back and fix it. He called to say he would, and that's the last we've heard from him. That was well over 1 month ago. Installing the appliances was another source of irritation for Dan. He yelled at my husband when he hadn't had the delivery people remove protective plastic from the refrigerator; also because he had to level the refrigerator. When the new stove was in place, Dan refused to lower it to the top of our new counters (because it wasn't his job???). He only did it when my husband refused to give him his last payment. Also, we had asked for Dan to hire a master electrician because we were taking the kitchen down to the studs and wanted to make sure we were within code. He hired the master electrician, but accused the electrician of holding up his own work. Dan told my husband that all billing for the electrician was to go through him. Well, I guess the tile fiasco was the last straw for Dan because he had the electrician bill us directly. Unfortunately, we had paid Dan off (assuming that we still had a little leverage because the electrician bills were to go through him). So, we have no pull for Dan to come back to finish the job. In summary, we would not let Dan into our house, let alone hire him again!
