At first, she seemed very nice and knowledgeable. She came out to our house to look at the job. I knew she was coming from far away so my husband and I were concerned that the drive was too far. However, she assured it wasn't and said "she would just charge a little more." While she was there, she gave us good advice on what needed to be done and said it would take 2 days, maybe three and gave us price based on that. However, when we started to ask her about a contract or anything, she seemed to get a bit defensive. We indicated to her that we needed something more than a "handshake" and that we would feel more comfortable with a something in writing. We also asked if she had insurance and she said yes, but if we wanted a copy of her insurance certificate, she would have to contact her insurance company, or give us the number for us to contact them. We drew up something informal for a contract and she signed it as well as me. I sent her on her way with a $100.00 check for a deposit on materials, big mistake. We wanted to continue to do our due dilligence and get another vendor to bid the job. They came back with a higher cost and told us it would take 3 days for two people to do the job. This concerned us because we weren't sure how one person could the job in three days, moving things, taking things off the walls, etc. When I called her with my questions and concerns, she became very defensive and just rude. I couldn't believe her unprofessionalism. She told me that she would send the check back to me because she just didn't need this. She said she has never had anyone do this to her before and that I just needed to trust her. I told her that I was just trying to address my concerns. I then asked her how much materials were going to cost and she said about 100 - 125.00. I asked how much a gallon of paint was and she couldn't tell me. In the end, I put a stop payment on the check because I just didn't want to work with someone who had no professionalism whatsoever. There was just something that did not sit right with her. The fact that she could not provide any references should have been a clue that something wasn't right. Anyway, I learned a valuable lesson in that never give someone money until they actually show up for the job and never trust someone who doesn't have a proposal! If I were you, I would stay clear of this woman.
Description of Work: I got this woman's name from a local magazine that we get because we wanted to have our master suite painted and the downstairs bathroom painted.
