Up-front the job went well and the quality of work was excellent.
There were a series of rain storms that slowed work during this particular installation so, times may not be representative of similar jobs during fair weather. The team spent four days removing trees, grading earth, removing stumps, and spreading under-laymen gravel. Brick installation took an additional three work days. Finish work and cleanup took one day. From start to finish the work was completed in just over two weeks.
The quality of work was excellent. The owner, Jay, stopped by every day that workers were there. The site foreman was professional, informative and responsive our day to day needs. During idle times, the site was picked up and left in a state of reasonable organization.
The cost was very reasonable. In comparison to other bids, we took seven in total, Jay's was one up from being the least expensive and about $900 below the median price. From the time of commitment to the start of work was about four weeks. We paid just under 60% before work started and the remainder after final inspection.
The only negative was the rolling damage caused by the equipment crossing back and forth in the front yard. While guard boards were laid down, the number of trips and weight of material left a path of damaged grass and compressed soil that later on had to be aerated. The fix for this was under $100 and the yard has since revived and looks fine. In our judgment this was a predictable side affect that could have been mentioned up front but still, to make an omelet one does have to break a few eggs.
I had to get a city permit to dig through the and quot;right-of-wayand quot; and to connect into the (city) storm drain. That process was a bit of a pain, but was worth it.
The actual work was fairly smooth. The(clay) soil was soggy. The workers arrived about 11:00 a.m. and dug the trench etc.
They had to wait a couple of hours for the drainpipe.(apparently had not preordered and had to go distance to a second source) Completed backfill and seeding just as it got dark. (8:30 pm)
After a couple of weeks, there was sinking in three areas. Jays came back and filled and reseeded those areas.
We are pleased with the end results.
I might add that Jay only cut the grass. He did not offer services for weed control and aerating. So my advice would be if you use Jay to cut grass, get someone else for landscaping services.
I will call them again this fall for shrub trimming and to put down a fresh layer of mulch.
