We are extremely dissatisfied with the quality & workmanship. We contacted Platko Enterprises twice with our concerns yet they have not accepted responsibility nor offered to make the necessary corrections. We advised them of disputes we had with their final bill. They offered to remove $438 in illegitimate charges but that is all. Platko represents themselves as "Certified Remodeling Contractors." We have contacted two licensed general contractors who have verified for us the substandard workmanship that must be corrected at considerable cost. Specifically, the flooring height and the beadboard wainscoting. Platko removed the old flooring down to the wood subfloor, but mistakenly installed the floor abnormally high then they installed a handicap ramp (instead of the standard threshold we contracted for) to connect the new floor to our carpeted hallway. We questioned them many times about the unusually high floor and they have offered no reasonable, legitimate explanation. The shoddy beadboard wainscoting installation was done by the contractor's husband, John Platko. We gave them a second chance to fix that but they failed to correct the problems. It seems the carpentry required to do this job professionally is beyond their skill level. The paneling is bowed out, the top raw edge is exposed and filled with caulk instead of being cut and fitted properly, the outside mitered corner was cut inexactly leaving a huge gap in the corner that they filled with caulk to cover up their bad workmanship and it is falling out. He installed 3 different height baseboards within the same space. Platko caused numerous damages to my home and they have refused to make the repairs. Berni Platko represented to us that she was insured & we recently asked them twice for proof of insurance, twice yet she has refused to provide that. At the start of this job, we asked if a permit was required & Ms. Platko said she was not required to pull a permit unless plumbing and electrical was being relocated. Platko did relocate 2 sinks & reworked some electrical. She stated a permit was required if the costs exceeded a certain amount and she advised us it was no ones business how much we were paying her. We contracted & paid for a professional job but we did not get what we bargained for. We have obtained estimates for all the work that has to be redone plus the repairs for damages, & the costs will be substantial. Ms. Platko is improperly holding $650 that we paid her in trust as a deposit on a piece of granite slab that we had considered using on a future downstairs project for which we had not entered into a contract. The slab company accidentally broke the slab and they refunded the money to Ms. Platko. We have twice asked her to return that $650 and she has failed to do so. We remodeled this bathroom to update & add value to our home but it will cost us thousands more to accomplish that which they should have done right in the first place.
Description of Work: We contracted with Platko Enterprises, Ltd. to completely gut the upstairs hall bath and install all new flooring, tub and tub surround, toilet, sinks, cabinets, fixtures, lighting, mirrors, doors and wainscoting. It was to be a total renovation of the hall bathroom.

Response from PLATKO ENTERPRISES LTD
This company has already responded to the member's false allegations on numerous occasions and to numerous outlets. However, we feel we must continue to respond to protect our good name. She did contract with our company to remodel her upstairs hall bath. The original contract cost was $19282.81. She had change orders that brought the final amount to $22,372.51 not including $772.00 I waived for her tile. Everything was detailed in a description of materials and a contract for construction. All work has been done pursuant to that contract and within industry standards. The only indications that she was dissatisfied with the work came after all of the punch items were completed and she was presented with her final bill. Only then did she become so hostile. She will not listen to any explanation and she has twisted our words. The "abnormally high floor" is 1.25" because of the toilet flange and the need to have a perfectly level area to accommodate the installation of the 18" tile with rectified edges. The ramp threshold was installed at her request. It is 1.25" high at the top. The member specified the chair rail for the wainscoting. After a few weeks she complained about the edge which we changed again at her request and without argument. She approved the change. Whenever she requested any punch list item, we responded in a timely manner. At one point she provided us with a scathing six page letter and list which we responded to in a professional manner and gave her credits for any damages that she claimed our company or subcontractors caused. She fails to acknowledge that she is holding $2000.00 of our money. She fails to say that the drywall repairs were made without charge to her as was the replacement of weather-stripping of her front door. She wants to be reimbursed the $650.00 which was used as a credit to reduce her final amount owed our company. That $650.00 was used as a deposit to hold a piece of limestone. It was not placed in escrow. The stone company did not have to refund her deposit but it did at our request. She also wants a copy of our insurance which I will provide only if a neutral third party determines that it is necessary. She has been insulting in all her communications to us. There has never been a complaint against me or our company in the 17 years we have been in business. We are members of NARI and IDS. I am a NARI Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler. We do not solicit or advertise for work. We have a one line listing in the yellow pages. Ninety-five percent of our work comes through referrals from past customers or subcontractors. The member's plumber referred us. We have performed work in his personal residence. Many clients are repeat customers. We have won two "Contractor of the Year Awards for Historical Renovation" from NARI and a "NARI People's Choice Award" for one of our bathrooms. However, suddenly we are sloppy and inferior. We must respectfully decline the request for Angie's List to participate in dispute resolution because we are contractually bound to resolve any disputes arising from this project through the rules of the American Arbitration Association. The Better Business Bureau has closed her complaint to them based on this fact. The member obviously has chosen to ignore this detail. Thank you.
