They left a huge mess for their work site, I actually got complaints from our HOA. They were supposed to insulate a wall, and forgot to do that. They didn't manage their subcontractors. They didn't properly install flashing on the roof vent, causing major leak, and after some heavy rains mold was found. I had to hire my own mold company to come into the inspection, they then had to cover the additional for the removal of the mold. They put the wrong flooring in. Their re-installation still wasn't great. They hired painters to come in before the walls were ready for paint. In the end it was easier to get them to just finish what they could and get out. They were just awful. The general contractor was rarely on site, so the team was just never managed. The work was never done on time and it just felt like it was just one thing after another.
Description of Work: We hired them to put an addition onto our house.

They are very detailed, and very attentive to what we want. They are also really helpful with ideas, and they are really happy to show us the other works that they have done or their references. The guy was even showing me some pictures of the things that he's done. I would definitely use them again in the future.
Description of Work: JH Custom Builders are in the process of remodeling right now, but they're almost done. They built an interior room, outside art studio, and patio in the backyard.

My entire experience with this company was a nightmare. I was referred to them by a good friend. Josh came to my house and we talked for over an hour about what I wanted in my new kitchen and the time frame in which I expected it to be done. They started the project in November and promised repeatedly that it would be done by Christmas. One of the problems from the very beginning was that Josh was not very involved in the oversight of the remodeling. He sent a very young, immature project manager to oversee everything and only really got involved if I called to complain. The following is a list of things that went wrong and are still going wrong after using this company: 1. Floor - the floor was changed from wood to ceramic tile. Once the original wood floor was removed, the floor should've been leveled. Instead, the ceramic tile floor was put in on an unlevel surface. Since the completion of the ceramic floor in Dec 2010, I have already had the entire floor replaced at a cost of over $4,000 because the grout was cracking throughout the kitchen and tiles just started coming loose. I had discussed my concern about the floor with Josh and he "promised" to honor his work regardless of warranty. I had his floor subcontractor repair the grout in three locations once. Then, it cracked again. Then, I had Grout Doctor come to fix the grout. Then, it cracked again. Then, I hired a very reputable floor company to come replace the entire floor. I reached out to Josh to see if they would reimburse me (at least partially) for the cost of the initial floor. The answer was no - that the warranty had expired and it was my choice to have it replaced rather than allow them to look at it first. In hindsight, I should've allowed Josh to come take a look at the floor when several tiles had popped out, but honestly I would've had to wait another 2-3 weeks to get him to show up. Paying the $4,000 at this point and knowing that the floor is finally done correctly is better than ever dealing with JH Custom Builders ever again. 2. Cabinets - I spent over an hour with the cabinet subcontractor and Josh to discuss the new cabinet design. I provided them with the dimensions of the brand new appliances that had already been ordered at that time. In addition, I requested a large lazy susan in the corner and an increase in depth on the other side of the cooktop for storage, rather than having the countertop extend out for barstools. So....the cabinets are put in and the appliances arrive and the refrigerator does not fit in the space that they designed. The project manager calls me at work, lets me know the problem and says that they will have the cabinet subcontractor come out to take a look. Instead, I arrive home to find that the project manager took it upon himself to cut the edge of the cabinet spacer so that the refrigerator would fit. It was not even, looked jagged, and it was utterly unacceptable. Then he proceeds to say that that was his "only option" and that there wasn't anything else he could do. Needless to say, after months of negotiation and no final payment, the cabinet subcontractor came back and replaced the spacer and moved the upper cabinets over properly so that the refrigerator would fit. Other issues with the cabinets.......some have a middle piece of wood to give support to the shelves and some don't (i.e. the internal shelves and cabinet style is not consistent throughout the kitchen), they put a drawer below the oven that is 2" in height (holds about 8 placements and that is all - completely useless and a waste of space), the cabinet below the sink was shortened in width and no longer fits a trashcan (I had to buy a free-standing can and it now sits on the floor), the lazy susan has cheap plastic shelves and it has fallen down over 6 times (if you put anything heavier than a bag of flour on it, it doesn't turn), four cabinet doors have fallen off and I have had to increase the screw length and use wood-filler to get them to stay in, and the baseboards and shoe moulding have popped off several times. 3. Countertops - I chose granite countertops. The countertops were put in and there are THREE seams in the counter that should maybe have one. For example, there is an corner piece of granite that is on top of the lazy susan and it is no wider than 30". It has a seam in the middle. My parents kitchen is three times the size of mine and they have NO seams at all in their countertops. In addition, when they turned over the kitchen to me, there was a large chunk out of the edge of the granite that they didn't even see. That was "repaired" but you can still see where it had been done. 4. Lighting - they removed a corner pantry with a door and opened up the kitchen with more cabinets instead. The pantry had a light in the ceiling. The took out the light and did not put in additional ceiling can lights to replace it. I was left with a very dark corner and have since hired an outside additional contractor to add two additional lights. I wanted under-cabinet lighting. They installed cheap, white, plastic neon lighting and put large holes in the backs of each cabinet. In addition, they only put them on one side of the kitchen. I have since gotten rid of what they did and installed rope lighting properly throughout the kitchen. What an improvement. 5. Painting - they used flat paint. I had specifically asked for eggshell. It is very difficult to keep clean and just another example of their shoddy work. They tried to say the job was completed without painting the baseboards or the doors. The upper cabinets were put in and did not completely cover the space of the old cabinets. Instead of repairing and evening out the wall where it met the old cabinet, they just painted right over it. I brought them back three times to "repair" but it still doesn't look good. 6. Garbage Disposal - I had my garbage disposal sitting in the garage to be re-installed once they were ready for it. I told them several times that I wanted to keep my garbage disposal. I came home from work one day to find the project manager unpacking a new garbage disposal out of a box. I reminded him of the one in the garage and he said "oh, I forgot....sorry". 7. Appliance installation - we've already discussed the refrigerator, but the dishwasher and dryer were issues also. They indicated that they were "finished" as I was leaving for Christmas holiday. I put some dishes in the dishwasher and left for a few days. When I got back, there was a bad smell in the kitchen. I opened the dishwasher and there were 4" of standing dirty water in the bottom. They had "forgotten" to take the plug out of the end of the drainage hose so the dishes sat in disgusting filthy water for a week. Then, they acted like I was completely unreasonable when I asked them to come fix it on New Year's Day. The dryer was not hooked up properly either. I turned it on and the silver vent blew off the back of the dryer, but I didn't know it until 30 min later when I went to check on the clothes. I walked in and the laundry room was like a sauna - the dryer had been "duct taped" instead of properly fastened. I had to call them back to fix that also. I feel like I have forgotten many, many things that went wrong. I am a single mother and finally saved up enough money for my "dream" kitchen. The dream kitchen is a living nightmare and has been nothing but headaches for almost two years. I am pretty confident that I will have to replace the cabinets within the next 3 years and probably some other items as well. Not to mention that I was still calling them back and holding on to their final payment SIX months after they promised to be finished. Josh and JH Custom Builders should be ashamed of their quality of work, timeliness of work, and responsiveness to issues raised. It speaks volumes that I would rather pay additional contractors to perform quality repairs rather than deal with them again. PLEASE DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY - SAVE YOURSELF A LOT OF TIME, MONEY and HEADACHES. They will lie to you, tell you whatever they think you need to hear and they will ruin your dreams. The above list is only a fraction of the issues that I had, but I hope you get the point.

They were very friendly. They job they did ended up very nice. Their communication was a little hard to understand. They were a little slower than what we expected. We would use them again for outside work but not for inside work.

My wife and I couldn't be happier. The quality of the work is top-notch and the entire experience far exceeded our expectations. From the beginning, JH set a high bar. Their estimate offered much more detail than any other competing bids ? and when all was said and done, we actually came in under budget. Once hammers started swinging, the JH foreman was exceptionally flexible and communicative. He frequently took pics during the day and emailed them to us. Any changes we asked for, he satisfied quickly and easily. He kept the project on schedule and kept us well informed of day-to-day progress. He was outstanding.
Description of Work: JH performed a complete kitchen renovation for us. They gutted our kitchen and dining room, knocked down a wall, ripped up the floors, replaced windows, installed cabinets, countertops and appliances — pretty much everything you could do..

Experience has been very good (still going). All pricing was presented in advance. Workers are focused, jobs are completed on-time and the jobsite remains very organized. It is a great help to have experienced opinions and creative concepts from people who understand what is involved. This is my second major rennovation and the key is finding a team like JH that takes whatever time is needed to plan the end result.

My wife and I decided to renovation our kitchen. We had some ideas of what we wanted, but we weren?t sure what our options were to leverage the cabinets we had in order to keep the price down. We wanted a company that could help us come up with the design, yet not push a lot of expensive options on us knowing that kitchen renovations can be very expensive. We reached out to 4 companies for estimates. Some of them walked us through the process and proposed ideas, while others were more looking to us for direction. We ended up choosing JH Custom Builders for several reasons: 1. My neighbor, a local architect, had worked with Josh and Kyle of JH Custom Builders on several projects and he praised their work. 2. During the first meeting, both Josh and Kyle came out to my house and they were very attentive to my thoughts and ideas and then they took those and presented other options. Josh took detailed notes, while Kyle was sketching my kitchen and measuring the area so he could adequately come up with a proposal with different options. 3. Before the proposal was presented to us, Kyle and Josh invited all of their subcontractors to my house so they could understand what work needed to be done and give an accurate price for the work. I thought this was great because I have had other work done on the house where the price increased as the project continued because of lack of understanding of what needed to be done. The project included replacing the oven/microwave cabinet because we wanted a larger double oven, remove the desk cabinet and replace with a built in wine refrigerator and cabinet, replace the entire island and expand its size and install a gas line, and paint the remaining cabinets and kitchen. Once we chose JH, Josh presented a check list of things we needed to get done before work could start. This list basically gave us deadlines of what decisions needed to be done first and when decisions needed to be made in order to meet the project start date and to keep the project on time. Kyle came over and helped us plan out our island because we wanted to maximize the space as much as possible. We were also unsure the color to paint our cabinets so the cabinet contractor was able to paint a few of our doors several colors to help us decide. Josh and Kyle did a great job managing the project. They provided me weekly emails outlining the schedule for that week to set expectations on who was coming in and when. It was great being able to communicate with them via email due to our hectic work schedules. My wife and I decided to include several additions throughout the project, such as a cabinet in the bonus room, and Josh was able to work it into the project to minimize our costs. Overall we are very pleased with Josh and Kyle?s attentiveness to detail and their management of this project. We are very happy with the end result and we would definitely use them again in the future and would recommend them to others.
Description of Work: Kitchen Renovation and New Cabinet in Bonus Room
The process was great. JH Custom Builders pricing was better than all of the top names in the city, and they are backed by many years of experienced with a major homebuilder. They laid out a very clear project plan with milestones to reach before payments were made, which is very important. Their trades were very professional, courteous and did high quality work. The communication was excellent, mostly due to a project manager routinely being on site to talk me through what had been done and what the next steps in the process were. JH Custom Builders handled all issues and challenges with permitting, inspections and easements. Excellent recommendation for JH Custom Builders!
Description of Work: JH Custom Builders built a two-story garage with a very large playroom above, both of which were attached to our existing home. They matched the exterior siding, interior carpet and paint, along with roof shingles. Our neighbors have all said they cannot even tell it is an addition. JH Custom Builders also poured a new driveway which is perfect, along with an outdoor living area in the back which we have received many compliments on.
