Big Blue Builder is the most unprofessional company we have ever worked with. Joe was late every time and did not answer his calls or return phone calls. He left the first job unfinished without ever telling us what happened. He was unable to fix the crown molding back on the cabinets, and he left part of our cabinets with exposed unfinished sides. He was paid for a full complete job, and the job is not complete. I would have even been willing to pay more to get it finished, but after he finished the second job, he completely disappeared, and i was never even given the chance to complain. The Second job was even worse. We are having the following problems with the floor: (i) the tiles are cracking in a section of the floor (ii) floor is noticeably uneven, leaving sharp lifted corners (iii) some of the tiles installed are broken and some have jagged edges (iv) some grout lines are noticeably thicker than others, and there is grout missing by the fireplace. It is completely horrible for the amount of money we paid him. Our builder, as well as another flooring specialist, has confirmed that the tile was incorrectly cut and installed. I reported him to the BBB and will take him to court over the installation. Now we will have to buy new tile and completely redo the floor. The worst thing of all, is that instead of apologizing, he does not take any responsibility for his actions!
Description of Work
We hired Big Blue Builders for two jobs. The first included (i) connection to gas line, (ii) installation of the new cooktop, and (iii) installation of the ventilation hood. The second was the installation of new travertine flooring. For the firt job: Obviously, since there was no hood in the area, the cabinets needed to be moved up so the new hood could fit. Again, Joe was well aware of this since he saw the home before the estimate. The semi-custom made cabinets that were installed in the home were not finished on the sides since they were not exposed before the installation. However, after Joe moved the cabinets upwards to install the hood, the unfinished sides were then exposed. He also took off the crown molding and was not able to put it back on the cabinets but I let this go. He said he would get the skins for the unexposed cabinets from the cabinet manufacturer. Joe stated it would take a couple of weeks for the skins to arrive, and in the meantime he completed the second job of installing our travertine flooring. After the flooring was installed, we never heard anything further about the skins. We called him numerous times and he would make excuses and then he just stopped answering our calls. The second job was the flooring installation. Joe was hired to install a new travertine floor over a concrete slab. When he showed up for the installation - late as usual - he removed the carpet and he saw the concrete slab had a crack. I was concerned but Joe said it was not a problem, and i chose to trust him since he's the "expert." Now I know better and the concrete slab should have been prepared and tested for flatness and moisture, before the travertine installation. Any competent contractor would have known this as well. Since I thought Joe knew what he was doing, I allowed him to continue the install and now the tiles are cracking. I was also shocked to realize that the machinery they used to cut the tile did not work well and was not making straight cuts so some areas on the floor have jagged and sharp edges. Joe blamed the travertine, and again, I believed him. Additionally the tiles are noticeably uneven, and it hurts to walk on them barefoot since the edges are sharp. However, I was not aware of the unevenness until after Joe left, since the grout was still wet and there was fresh sealer on the floor and i was unable to walk on this floor until after i paid him.

Joe Fatigante did not know what he was doing. He did not understand how to structurally tie the new basement into the old part of the house. He simply did not have the knowledge to do the job. I had to hire another builder to clean up the mess and finish the job. There's so many things he damaged, that I cannot list them all here. I have detailed notes on the project and the mess Joe Fatigante created and would be happy to share them. Please email me to receive any details you need. Fatigante enclosed part of our porch so it would be inside our house, but he did not level the floor. The carport was to be turned in a garage. Fatigante cut the 2 x 4's different lengths so the roof sagged in some areas. He also re-roofed the garage and it leaked 1 month later. These are only a few examples. I have many. This guy is still in business because everything he owns is in his wife's name. You can easily get a judgment, but you can't collect. If you ever find a builder that does not have his property in his name... don't hire him.
Description of Work
We hired Joe Fatigante to do a $180,000 remodel job. He was to gut the main floor of our house, then add a basement with a master suite above. We paid a $40,000 retainer.

Joe said he may stop by Saturday, December 9 and preview the layout to see where they could park a truck, materials, etc. Work was supposed to begin on Monday, Dec. 11. My husband took the day off to help get the project off the ground and assist with logistics if needed. Big Blue Builders never showed up. We proceeded to call Joe several times over the next few days and even sent messages via email. My husband tried again after Christmas to make contact and no reply. We have never heard back from Joe or anyone at Big Blue Builders to this day. This lack of customer service and responsiveness to a customer will never have us recommending him for any job large or small. I've shared the information with the person who recommended this company to me. This is the first time we have had a company never call us back. Very disappointing.
Description of Work
Joe from Big Blue Builders came out in the beginning of October to do a quote for expanding our deck. While he was there, he also did a quote for us on what it would cost if we ever decided to finish our 18-foot high crawl space which is basically an unfinished basement. He provided estimates for both and what the project would cost as a whole if we decided to do both at the same time. We made contact with him after the quote and said as soon as the financing came through we wanted him to do our deck project. We decided to wait on the basement uplift. Once we had everything in place, we called Joe and confirmed a date.

BIG BLUE BUILDERS HAS BEEN IN BUSINESS SINCE 1994, WE STRIVE TO SATISFY ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS. WE DO NOT ADVERTISE AT ALL-ALL OF OUR WORK IS REFERRAL-BASED AND WE HAVE BEEN BOOKED A MINIMUM OF 4 MONTHS OUR FOR THE PAST 3+ YEARS. VISIT OUR WEB PAGE,WWW.BIGBLUEBUILDERS.COM, YOU WILL SEE OUR WORK SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT A BUSINESS WHOM ADVERTISES WITH ANGIE’S LIST, NOR DO WE PAY ANY FEE’S TO THE LIST. WE HAVE NO RECORD ANYONE BY THIS NAME OR ANY VARIATION OF THIS NAME IN OUR DATA BASE, FURTHERMORE IF WE QUOTE A JOB, WE DO THE JOB, PERIOD. BIG BLUE BUILDERS OCCASIONALLY DOES JOBS UNDER $10,000.00 AND WE RARELY COMPLETE A JOB UNDER $5,000.00, UNLESS IT IS FOR ONE OF OUR MANY REPEAT CUSTOMERS. THIS COMPLAINT MAKES NO SENSE, SHE CLAIMS WE GAVE AN ESTIMATE, BUT NEEDED TO GO BACK TO THE HOME TO PREVIEW THE LAYOUT TO SEE WHERE WE COULD PARK A TRUCK AND MATERIALS AND THE JOB WAS TO START TWO DAYS LATER. IF WE HAD QUOTED THE JOB WHY WOULD WE NEED TO "PREVIEW" A LOCATION TO PARK, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN LOOKED AT IF AND WHEN ANY JOB WAS LOOKED AT, THINGS LIKE PARKING AND MATERIAL STAGING PLAY A ROLE IN PRICING ANY JOB. ALSO REVIEW THE TIMELINE, ALTHOUGH IN A PERFECT WORLD WE WOULD LOVE TO LOOK AT A JOB ON ONE DAY AND START IT TWO DAYS LATER, UNFORTUNATELY IT WE ARE NOT A FEW GUYS WORKING OUT OF THE BACK OF A PICKUP TRUCK, OUR WORK CONSISTS OF LARGE ADDITIONS, MAJOR REMODELS, AND CUSTOM HOMES, WE DO NOT BUILD $3,000.00 DECKS.

WHEN WE FIRST STARTED OUR WORK WITH BIG BLUE BUILDERS WE WERE EXCITED. A LITTLE UNDER HALF WAY THROUGH THE JOB BIG BLUE BUILDERS HAD LABOR PROBLEMS. FROM THAT TIME ON OUR JOB BECAME A NIGHTMARE WITH VERY POOR WORKMANSHIP. WALLS ARE NOT STRAIGHT AND DO NOT FORM A STRAIGHT LINE AT CEILING. IT IS SO WAVY IN SOME ROOMS, WE HAD TO ADD CROWN MOLDING TO HIDE THE CEILING MISTAKES AND JUST HOPE THAT FURNITURE WILL HIDE THE CURVED IN AND OUT WALLS. THE FINISH WORK ON THE SHEETROCK IS SO BAD WE HAD TO HIRE ANOTHER COMPANY TO COME IN AND TRY TO FIX IT. THE SECOND SHEETROCK COMPANY TRIED, BUT INFORMED US THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO TOTALLY RE-MUD EVERYTHING AND REPLACE SOME PIECES BECAUSE THEY WERE SO MESSED UP. WE STILL HAVE ITEMS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN FINISHED LIKE ELECTRICAL SWITCHES AND LIGHTS. COLUMNS AND A BAR ARE ALSO UNFINISHED. NO SUPPORT IN THE SHOWER FLOOR MAKES IT UNUSABLE. THE CABINET IN THE BATHROOM WILL HAVE TO BE MOVED AND CABINET TOP AND PLUMBING RESET. COMPANY FAILED ON THIS JOB!
Description of Work
WE HAD A UNFINISHED BASEMENT AND WERE READY TO HAVE IT FINISHED. WE ALREADY HAD THE PLUMBING IN PLACE AND NEEDED A COMPANY TO COME IN AND TAKE IT FROM THERE. THE OPEN AREA WAS TO BE TURNED INTO 2 BEDROOMS, WEIGHT ROOM, OPEN ENTERTAINMENT AREA, EATING AREA AND BATHROOM WITH SEPARATE TOILET AREA.

MY HUSBAND CALLED TO DISCUSS GETTING AN ESTIMATE FOR WOODEN FENCING & A GARDEN SHED FOR OUR YARD. HE HAD A NICE CONVERSATION WITH THEM & THEY TOLD HIM THEY WERE ACTUALLY IN THE AREA AND COULD STOP BY THAT DAY (IT WAS A SATURDAY). MY HUSBAND ALL BUT PROMISED THEM THE JOB, BUT CALLED ME (HE WAS AT WORK) TO ASK IF THAT WAS OKAY, I SAID YES. HE CALLED BACK (ABOUT 5 MINUTES LATER) AND LEFT A MESSAGE FOR THEM. MY HUSBAND GAVE THEM HIS WORK NUMBER AND OUR HOME NUMBER AND THEY NEVER CALLED BACK (NOR DID THEY SHOW UP AT OUR HOUSE). I CALLED THEM BACK ABOUT A WEEK LATER AND LEFT ANOTHER DETAILED MESSAGE, THEY NEVER CALLED BACK. I GUESS OUR JOB WAS JUST TOO SMALL FOR THEM.

OUR CONTRACT WAS TO REMODEL TWO BATHROOMS FOR $15000, BUT BIG BLUE STOPPED WORK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIRST BATHROOM REMODEL BECAUSE THEY ORDERED THE WRONG CABINET SIZE. WE WERE TOLD THEY WOULD RETURN TO FINISH THE JOB AS SOON AS THE NEW CABINET CAME IN. IT HAS BEEN 8 WEEKS SINCE THEY LEFT OUR HOUSE AND OUR FIRST BATHROOM HAS STILL NOT BEEN COMPLETED. THEY HAVE SAID THEY WILL NOT RETURN UNTIL WE PAY THEM MORE MONEY FOR ITEMS THEY CLAIM WENT OVER OUR ALLOWANCE BUDGET. THEIR ORIGINAL ALLOWANCE LIST, HOWEVER, WAS MISSING SEVERAL ITEMS AND FURTHER ATTEMPTS ON OUR PART TO DISCUSS ALLOWANCE COSTS WERE MET WITH ARGUMENTS FROM BIG BLUE AND EVENTUALLY, NEW ALLOWANCE LISTS THAT SHOWED SEVERAL CRITICAL COSTS TO HAVE CHANGED. NO RECEIPTS OR ORDERING INFORMATION FOR ANY OF THE EXPENSIVE ITEMS LIKE THE CABINETS WERE EVER SHOWN TO US BY BIG BLUE EVEN AFTER REPEATED REQUESTS FOR THIS INFORMATION. WE HAVE PAID BIG BLUE $8000 SO FAR (OF A $15000 CONTRACT) AND DO NOT YET HAVE OUR FIRST BATHROOM COMPLETED.

Service Provider Response

The issues raised in the complaint are unfounded, the member received a budget allowance for all hard line items, they understood that any monies over this amount would add to the cost of their project, due to many comments and second guessing remarks we advised the member of the 'to date' amount that they had gone over their budget. The member became belligerent and refused to discuss the issue in a businesslike manner. The member indicated that her friend who was a bathroom remodeler stated that this is not the way things needed to be done, I never fully understood what the meaning of that was, although through the entire job every step of the way everything that was done was second guesses by the member, she kept referring to her friend who was a bathroom remodeler. Why didn't he do the job for them, or why didn't they ask him how allowances work? I have made every attempt to make the member happy, it just seems that this in an impossible task.
