Dana's assistant was very prompt to schedule - and work around a few re-scheduling attempts. The whole time, I felt like they were being extremely accommodating and responsive. When the time finally came to come over, Dana and her Contractor stopped by, took measurements and solicited feedback on what exactly we were looking for with regards to a bathroom remodel. She presented great ideas on how to maximize our space, storage and flow, and did so in a very professional manor. The only sticking point was the price of the proposed remodel. It seemed like it was more than twice what my wife and I were expecting... but, nothing ventured, nothing gained. We learned a lot about the process and what to expect.
Description of Work: Dana's Design Studio came by as part of the Big Deal and provided plans for a bathroom remodel.

We enjoyed meeting you and appreciate the feedback. Many people are surprised by the costs for remodeling. As you comparison shop apples to apples, you will confirm the numbers we suggested. We do not take a builder-basic approach that gives you a cookie-cutter product -- sometimes that cookie-cutter product comes in at a cost less than we propose, but many times it is at the same or higher cost! Photos and feedback you gave us suggested that cookie-cutter was not going to cut it for you. The budget we provide at the consultation is NOT a bid and therefore is not the cost of your project. It is a ballpark figure based on what we see in the industry for average costs and also responds to what we understand your needs to be. It factors in the cost of using professionals -- whether us or others -- with our capabilities to give you amazing timeless design and long-lasting quality. You have a very special historic home. We encourage you to take your time to research and save for the project to work with professionals who put design first. Review their portfolios to be sure the product they provide is what you want.

Dana and Ammon arrived right on schedule. They were very personable and approachable. It is always a bit nerve-wracking to have strangers looking so closely at your home. They measured and we came up with a Phase 1 and a Phase 2 plan. I'm not able to proceed right now but I will definitely contact them when the time comes. The price is high but what I expected by my own research of kitchen remodels. Probably the most valuable thing I learned from the meeting was potential complications of replacing the countertop myself. Since the backsplash is very old tile, it will probably break when the original countertop is removed. A simple project would likely be more expensive and problematic. Also, the floor has several layers of flooring and was higher than the hardwood floor in the dining room. I hadn't noticed this until they pointed it out. This meant that I would have to remove layers before putting down a new floor. This was probably a no-brainer to someone who did this sort of thing, but was a definite factor for me to consider. My do-it-yourself projects became Don't-it-yourself! Overall, the meeting was well worth the price and incredibly helpful. I am sure I'll be contacting them once I am ready to proceed.
Description of Work: Dana and Ammon, a contractor, measured my kitchen and gave me detailed ideas of ways it could be remodeled, as well as potential problems. I received a comprehensive estimate of the general charges for the project.

We didn't spend anymore than the deal because it was something that we didn't want. There was a woman that came who was professional and acted professionally. I thought that she was knowledgeable and good. She had a partner who came in with old tattered blue jeans and I was cringing as he sat on our sofa. I thought he was the workman and I think that they were partners. I also thought that he could've been a lot more professional. It's hard to have confidence in someone where you're so concerned about their clothes that you don't want them sitting on your sofa. I wasn't happy with his demeanor. We told them we wanted a low price and didn't want to spend a lot of money. It was just a bathroom and they came in at $40,000 which was the opposite of what we requested, so I wasn't happy with that. $40,000 for a bathroom I think is a lot to anybody. I don't think their responsiveness wasn't good because we asked for a low price and the gentleman in the tattered jeans kept questioning what I did for a living, but I'm not there to discuss myself. I'm there to discuss the project and I wasn't too happy with that. The woman showed up on time, but her partner was late.
Description of Work: I purchased a "Big Deal" from Dana's Design Studio. It was only a consultation. They came out and gave us some ideas on our bathroom, but we didn't get a design.

We are sorry our consultation did not meet your expectations. We hope our services are a match for your needs, but regardless, we want the consultation to provide you valuable information that helps you move forward for your remodel. Carol in our office has tried to reach you by phone and email to offer a refund but has been unable to reach you. Please know we are willing to refund what you paid for the coupon. Regarding the gentleman you describe, it is hard for us to recall any of our contractors having behaved in the manner you describe. They come clean and act considerate. Our contractors do dress casually, often in jeans, as they often come from the job site to the consultation. By comparison to our designers who dress in business attire, a contrast can be made. We are appreciative of the time our contractors make for the consultation and the expertise they lend. There is no company in town that affords you the opportunity to meet a designer and contractor team-up to give insights to your job. We think this is a very special service we offer.

We were contacted immediately after the online purchase to set up an appointment time. Dana came to the house, looked and listened to our ideas and concerns and provided her thoughts and a sketch of her ideas. She gave us an estimate for costs, most of which was furniture ( we essentially have a clean, empty slate in our new home). We liked her ideas and have acted on some of them. We did not use her for further service at this time due to cost and needing to spread out the purchase of furniture. We only discussed ideas for one room, but would use her for help in future projects.

It went fine and if I needed help overseeing contractors during a remodeling project, I'd probably consider hiring her.
Description of Work: I purchased a 2 hr. interior design consultation "Big Deal". Obviously, she was trying to sell her project management services but that wasn't what I was looking for...I wanted her ideas for my recently purchased home. I met with Dana and the contractor on 5/10 and was very pleased with the appointment. We spent approximately 2 hours discussing possible improvements to the master bathroom and closet and approximate pricing. Both were personable, open to listening to my ideas and gave alternative ideas and perspectives as needed. They patiently answered all my questions. I am not yet ready to commit to the project but now I have a much better idea about what is possible. I feel like I could make a more confident and informed decision after having this meeting.
Description of Work: I purchased a 2-hour consultation with an interior designer and contractor from Angie's List to discuss possible improvements and costs for updating the master bathroom. I was also interested in putting in a washer/dryer en suite. Together, Dana and the contractor talked with me about my ideas, took measurements, asked pertinent questions about what I envisioned and at the end of the meeting provided an approximate price for their services and materials to perform the improvements we discussed.

Dana was great! I'm so glad we took advantage of the Angie's List deal for a color consultation. We wanted to find some non-dull neutral colors for our new home, but hadn't been able to make up our minds after months of looking at swatches on our own. Dana accommodated our work schedules, which was greatly appreciated, and was able to meet with us within a few weeks of us getting in touch. We didn't have a lot for her to go on (i.e. very little furniture, etc.), but she helped us find some great colors, and gave us several referrals for contractors/businesses that we have later used with great success. The first two rooms are painted with the colors she helped us choose and they are beautiful! She also gave us feedback on some design elements of our home and made recommendations about how to prioritize our renovation projects. We paid for a color consultation and got a LOT more! Thank you Dana!

When we saw the Special Offer on Angie's List, we knew we wanted to update our kitchen, but we had no where to begin. A consultation with Dana turned out to be a great place to begin. She gave us so many ideas and good advice on what would be, and what would not be feasible within the budget we were trying to work with. She took a lot of time with us and very responsive during the process. While we did not engage her for the entire project, that decision was made for other factors other than Dana and her competency. She did a great job and I would definitely use her again if the need arose.

Dana's Design Studio consistently displays professionalism and provides quality input in their consultations. Each of Dana's designs have commenced with brainstorming ideas based on our vision and then presenting action items/options of proceeding forward. We are extremely happy with her artistic ability as well as her practical know-how of contractor installations. Thanks to Dana, there is a noticeable flow of style, pattern and colors between each of our rooms. This is very noticeable on our first floor where the living room, dining room and kitchen are arranged in a shotgun layout. Each of these rooms consist of large pocket doors which expose each of the other rooms as a well-thought backdrop.
Description of Work: We have utilized Dana's expertise in selecting furniture (including style, pattern and color schemes), paint colors and decor which ties several rooms together in a manner consistent to our style and budget.

We coordinated a time for them to come to the house. We had a discussion with them about what we were trying to accomplish. Their business model is a little different on how they approach projects. From what I understand they provide design work and then have basically a project manager that helps manage the general contractor and make sure things are done as designed. I liked that concept but was concerned the additional cost that was going to add to our project. In addition, I was expecting some new ideas because a designer was involved and really didn't get anything new as a result of the consultation. They were very personable as well and would probably consider using them in the future if I didn't have the tight budget I had to accomplish the kitchen remodel that I wanted.

Thank you for your report. We hope you take advantage of our start smart package to help you determine the scope and cost of your job. We provide a designer-driven project that puts design first. The cost for that is right in line with reputable contractors who don't work with a designer. It is little understood, but designers save you from making costly mistakes or having a product in the end that is underwhelming, not meeting your expectations for improvements and does not contribute significantly to your resale value. Our projects meet your lifestyle needs, exceed expectations and maximizes your return at resale. Our contractors keep their bids competitive and appropriate because they know we handle the upfront work to get your project launched. We give contractors a turn-key job. The product in the end is far superior to the contractor-driven project that does not involve a designer every step of the way. We construct a team -- client, designer, contractor -- that is unlike any other design/build experience. We can't think why anyone would want to do it any other way. We hope you give us a chance to prove our concept.

This was a 'wonder what we could do' exercise for us. We took advantage of a Big Deal offer thru Angie's List to dream. Dana and one of her general contractor's Gene Devore with Basset Construction spent around two hours with us on a Saturday morning. They asked about our 'wants' and 'dreams' for the space, and if we had any 'don't dos' or concerns. Then we sat down to discuss project possibilities and ended with a preliminary estimate complete with timeline estimates. Dana is to email us the preliminary estimate (have not received it yet) and she proposed a "Start Smart Package" when we are ready to begin planning the project for real. It will include a statement of work, design plans, a working budget, two exploratory shopping trips (appliances and cabinets/countertops), and 2-3 general contractor bids. And the best part...she project manages everything from beginning-to-end. Cool.

We had been interested in remodeling our tiny kitchen for years, but were daunted by what we knew would be an expensive project. When Angie's list offered a $79 kitchen remodeling consultation, we thought it would at least give us some ideas and we were right. We were blown away by the ideas that Dana and Mark came up with during that first visit. we were also blown away by the price tag. It was simply too much money for the value of our house and the size of our kitchen. Undeterred, Dana worked diligently to develop a plan to remodel our kitchen at a price we could afford while giving us most of what we wanted, which included removing most of a wall! We were seriously impressed by her work at every phase of this project. Her fee was around $1500, which might seem high to some but I believe she earned and deserved every penny. She is totally hands on with all aspects of the process. She has relationships with vendors all over St. Louis who were a pleasure to work with and who had wonderful products. By working with them through her we received discounts we would not have otherwise had access to. She was actively engaged in working with us to select everything that went into our kitchen and trouble shot every issue that came up along the way. She has a great eye for detail and has exacting expectations. When one of the custom made cabinets was not quite right she worked with the manufacturer to have it remade and reinstalled. She recommended a couple of young men (Jon & Mike) who own a company called Apex who implemented her design and they were terrific. We liked their work so much that we have hired them for two other small jobs since they completed the kitchen. In addition to being exceptionally good at what she does, Dana was delightful to spent time with during the process. We hope to hire her again to remodel a bathroom in the near future and have enthusiastically recommended her to numerous people.
Description of Work: We had a consultation for remodeling our kitchen that lead to a decision to hire Dana. She then designed the remodel and provided contacts with several venders including the company that actually implemented her design.

The process was very long and I'm actually still under construction because I had to fire her and rehire the contractor. What should have taken 8-10 weeks has turned into four months! Rediculous! While she was on the job, she insisted on weekly meetings, for which my husband and I could not always be present for. The only reason for this was so she could check up on the contractor to make sure he was doing things her way, instead of the way it was supposed to be or the way I wanted it. At one meeting, she told the contractor that she "warned me about the type of flooring we chose" and that "they had put up several red flags". So instead of backing her client in the choices made, she was trying to protect herself and then insisted on telling the contractor how to install the flooring, which was contradictory to what I had already discussed with him. She had no idea how to install and treat the type of flooring I had. I did my homework for over a year with this and knew exactly how it was to be done. In addition, she told the contractor to hang my vanity lights upside down--completely different from what I told him they needed to be based on how they were presented in the catalogue. So the contractor had to take extra time to take them down and hang them the right way. She should have known this, as it was discussed with her on several occasions before they were put up as well. I guess she thought it would "look better".
Description of Work: Interior design for master bathroom remodel and second bath renovation. If you have any idea of what you want-- the products you want, the layout you want and any products you plan to use, DO NOT use this interior designer. I spent over a year researching products I wanted for my bathrooms, especially my master bath and at every turn, she questioned every product I chose instead of knowing the background/history/functionality of the products. She continuously tried to talk me out of using the products I chose, as well as tell me how I was going to have my bathroom done instead of listening to how I wanted it done. In addition, many things I said I wanted she basically ignored and I incurred the cost of it. I paid way too much money for what I got and will never do it again. The more I spoke to other professionals who know of her, the worse my choice in interior designers became. Come to find out, some of the products she insisted I buy for my project were the wrong kind of products for the project. She suggested I keep the old tub and shower surround in my spare bathroom, which was a putrid yellow color, in order to "save some money". Why would I keep an old, dingy putrid colored product in a new bathroom with bright, colorful and white backgrounds in it? In addition, finishing trims, which she should have known to have me purchase she didn't bother thinking about and then piece-mealed something else to "fix" that problem. For example, not once did she tell me I needed bull-nosed tile to finish all the edges and corners of my tile shower. Because I used another service to order all my products, it would have taken too long to get the tiles and she just substituted something else, which is now causing more problems in my shower. And because I had to have that product rush delivered, it cost me almost twice as much money. The rush was to meet the contruction timeline. When I fired her, she couldn't figure out why even after I explained it all to her. Then she demanded that I pay her the remaining amount of money on the contract. Every time the subject of money came up, she couldn't give me a straight answer. First she tells me that she gets financially compensated last, then she turns around and tells me that her costs are all rolled into all the payments and not specifically broken out. Then she tells me that the contractor gets "front loaded" all his money. I didn't even know what that meant. On another occasion, I didn't have the money for a payment because I hadn't received my bonus yet.She insisted I make it, she demanded that I make it even if I had to use a credit card, for which she charged a service charge. Within three days of making that payment, I received my bonus! Lastly, (cause I could go on forever) even the people working for her had not very nice to things to say about her when she was not present.

We are extremely saddened your report is very unfair and misrepresents what our company is all about. We did NOT complete the work, though you are reporting we have. Some elements you are are reporting were not managed by our company. We agreed with you to settle by a separation with compensation for our time and expertise and have you manage and complete the work on your own. We have weekly meetings to facilitate communication and hold them at a time that is good for our clients. You indicated lunch time would be the best time. If the timing for those did not work for you, we needed to know. We encouraged you to reconsider your flooring material of cork because it is not recommended in wet areas like bathrooms. It is not recommended to go under a toilet. This is not our company's recommendation, but by the manufacturer. We consulted the factory representative to further understand the possible applications of the material in a wet space. You consulted online sources which did not represent the factory's recommendations. We communicated ideas from the factory, particularly in applications around the toilet, that were not accepted by you. We worked at your request to find a contractor willing to work with the cork flooring and to install in a manner we collectively -- contractor, designer and client -- felt could give the best possible outcome. We are baffled as to why you feel our raising red flags was a negative. We see it as a positive and professional to consider the shortcomings of products in order to assure the best possible outcome. We suggested you could work with existing materials in the smaller bathroom to meet your budget requirements. We are able to make existing materials look amazing and even new, something that delights most of our clients and helps their bottom-line. When you indicated using existing materials was not an option, we did not labor the matter, respected your direction, and worked with you to design the small bathroom using new materials. Bullnose tile is something most designers don't use when it is not needed, though contractors often believe it is the only and easiest way to finish the sides. Designers offer different finish options -- some take a little more effort and expertise on the part of the contractor -- that give you a much better look. In your case, your tile had acceptable finished sides and in addition, we offered a paintable caulk finish which you agreed to. If we had had the chance to manage the tile installation, you would have been delighted with the end result. In regards to the payment schedule, you told us payment would be delayed two weeks, not three days as you are reporting. We gave you the option to delay the work or pay by credit card. We treated you the same as any client. When payments are delayed, we offer flexibility when we can, but two weeks would have been unacceptable for a project of your scale. In regards to what you refer to as front-loading payments to the contractor, it is accurate that we gave a monetary incentive -- delaying compensation to our company -- to the contractor to begin your project in a timely manner. This is because you indicated you were going to be deployed in service in the very near future. We wanted work to begin as quickly as possible while you could be available to give feedback. In conclusion, we are very sorry and extremely saddened you did not understand we had your best interests at heart on every element of the project. We gave you considerable time and expertise to design and launch your project, for which we have not been compensated. We are to be held harmless for elements of the project that were not managed by us or in areas where you did not consider or apply our professional advice. Our record of service awards and design awards as well as testimonials on Angie's List indicate we deliver a valuable service. Further, the list of reputable and highly rated contractors who continue to do work with us also testify to our professionalism. We hope for the best outcome for your projects.

I was a bit frustrated. I was trying to determine what various costs would be so I could arrive at a plan. There were many good ideas, but the estimate I received did not detail any proposed changes and was so wide broad that it was of little use. I shouldl have been more specific ie how much would it cost to raise the vanity, what would labor cost be to replace the current shower with new tile, etc.
Description of Work: I purchased 2 big deals for a consultation on a kitchen and master bathroom update. Dana didn't realize I had purchased two and the second part of our meeting was a bit rushed. I was looking for ideas on an update not a complete remodel. I did not use Dana nor her construction people for any work

Customer, thank you for your review. We do not give estimates at our consultations. We help construct a budget. In your case it was admittedly loose. But when projects such as yours have many moving parts, it is hard to understand the scope and nail down the costs in a consultation of just two hours. That is why we recommend our "start smart" package that gives you plans and solid costs. In the start smart process we explore finishes and products to understand what you would like. It helps you be strategic to make decisions of where to splurge and where to save in the project. We would be happy to visit with you again, especially since we were rushed. We apologize that we were not aware you had two coupons. We will be in touch soon.

The quality of their work and planning, the fact that she came to the house and did a design that things could be placed easily. She had fabulous ideas and a variety of price points. I appreciate her design skills and planning management. Ultimately, we ended up selling so we did not need them.
Description of Work: Dana's Design Studio did some designs for me.

I hired Dana's in-home interior design package through the $250 Angie's Deal. My house has great bones, but is pretty much gutted. I needed Dana's input as to how the house could be refinished in a way I liked that would also sell well. Dana walked through the entire house with me, answering all the questions I had. She was encouraging and moved quickly to make sure she fit in as much as possible in the time we had. Most memorable was her encouragement to paint the old, lacquered red oak trim with white (which I wanted but was afraid to do). She also offered window treatment and paint color advice. She was very much interested in designing the kitchen and promoted her crew as very skilled in creating Amish cabinetry, should I need them in the future. Dana also was very cost-conscious; she suggested specific products and sources that provide the biggest bang for the buck.
Description of Work: Provided guidance on style, color and products for refinishing house in a way I liked, but that would also sell well.
