What I mean by crowd sourced is no central office or staff.. they have a huge database of repair people who take a cut of 35%-60% of whatever they charge a customer - so it is extremely beneficial to them to charge the customer as much as possible and the quality of staff is highly variable with no quality control or training. Sure this works great for customers if you are talking about Uber - but garage door repair? Not so much.
In December of 2015 I called them to come and do a check up on the garage. I bought this through angie's list. No problem.
A month later, the garage door has stopped working. It goes up one foot then comes back down. I called and asked what kind of technician was sent in December and asked for confirmation of exactly what was done in December. The person who answered the phone, who was a woman tried to transfer me to a service person. It didn't work and then I was transferred to someone else who called himself, "Michael" the senior service technician. Michael told me all the workers were licensed, insured, etc. He also indicated that in December my garage door was lubed and the chain was tightened.
So back to present day. The service technician arrives very quickly and calls to tell me that the repairs (labor only) will be $325. This is a one year old garage door. I ask what was the problem and he says the door has heavy spots and then he lists off about 5 other items or issues which are related to a problem with the garage door caused by someone over-tightening the chain. I informed him that the "someone" who over-tightened the chain was his company and he said it wasn't. I called the office and asked them to help. When I called the office I got another person. I asked for "Michael the Senior service technician" and he had NO idea who I was talking about. Regardless, he called the technician. The Technician went back into the garage for exactly 2.5 minutes and the garage door was working again. Do now know what he did. The next day - garage door broken again.
Technician was excellent. Very articulate, competent and trustworthy.....and a good craftsman. We called on a Saturday nightwhen we discovered that one of the torsion springs for our garage door had broken. Initially I called the garage door company that originally installed our garage door and services it. However, they were going to charge us a weekend trip fee of $300 so I told them to forget it.....and a few other comments. I was then going to wait until the following Monday morning to call them back and have a conversation with the owner....but decided to go ahead and do a "google search" using the keywords "broken garage door spring" and the first company listed was "garagedoorofkc.com". So I clicked on the link and called the 800 number listed. The gentlemen that answered the call said he had a serviceman in my area and could get him out to replace the broken torsion spring that evening. I asked where the company was located but he was somewhat evasive. I got the impression that he was sort of a "dispatcher" for all the calls that came in and then perhaps calling individual technicians (maybe independent contractors) to do the work. In any event, I didn't seem to want to answer the question "where are your offices?" I asked him if there was a trip fee and he hesitated....then said that they normally charge a $75 trip fee but offered to waive it.
Within 30 minutes after talking with the "dispatcher", the technician called to say he was on his way. He arrived promptly and as I indicated in the preliminary review comments, did a great job. I give him as many stars as you can give. However, upon arriving, I showed him the problem (one of the torsion springs was broken) and, after looking over the entire garage mechanism, he quoted a price of over $700! I told him that the price was ridiculous and that I would just wait until Monday and call the guys we normally use and get what we needed done for $250 or less for quality parts.....then, as you can imagine, the numbers started dropping. As we talked, I sensed that that the technician was a good craftsman and probably was under the directive of the owner(s) to "highball". It was because I liked the technician that I went ahead and let him do the job for $375....much more than I would have paid had I waited until Monday and called the company we ordinarily use. The technician did a nice job and completed it promptly. So I am giving the company a "B" because they hired a quality technician...and because I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and use them again for maintenance, etc...but will, because of this experience, be much more vigilant of reasonable pricing for services.

They were supposed to be here between 9-12 after waiting around all morning, they came after 1:30. They told us it was going to be $835 and that was because it was such a dangerous job and that people have gone to the ER when trying to do it themselves. We only had one spring broken and they replaced both without telling us we could replace one or offering lower price springs. When we called later after looking up how much it should have cost, they told us that the springs were 3-5 hundred each. I feel totally sick after seeing how much they overcharged us. They took advantage of their customer because my car was stuck in the garage and didn't have time to get someone else out. They also will not do a military discount on the over inflated price. NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THESE GUYS!
