Poor. (this was a paint store that Paul's uses and a different brand and type of paint was used. He took it upon himself to change from oil to acrylic without asking. As we all know, oil and acrylic will change over time and look differently. I didn't want the rest of the trim work in the house to be different) We were satisfied with the 3rd coat as far as the color but Paul had to now paint oil over acrylic because he chose to use acrylic without our approval. We will now have to worry that it will separate from the acrylic in the future because oil is a heavier paint. (other trim work was painted only 2 months prior. Paint color doesn't change in 2 months) (clear coat was sprayed before the sanding dust was remove thoroughly creating a gummy saw dust mess on several of the drawer glides) (we placed blue tape on all of the drip marks, when we were finished the cabinetry looked like a Dalmatian they were so spotted), (yes, I believe a "drop or two" could have been done as a touch up but a "drop or two" or a nail hole or two wasn't the case) (approx. 20-30 nail holes could be seen (that area must have been the pathway to the door). (again, calling these major issues, "touchups") The decision to not have them back came from all the excuses for the poor work. If Paul had said "you know we see your concerns and we will make it right" we would have given him the chance to make it right. When he said "touchup" when I saw nail holes that weren't filled prior to painting, and spray guns drip throughout the cabinetry, this wasn't "touchups" in our eyes. Does touchup work cost $1200-$2600??? This is the amount he quoted to charge us to make it right. You're darn right I was demanding. When you spend $90,000 plus for a new kitchen/dining room, I don't expect the major part of the kitchen painting to be low quality work. (did you notice he said the "work was done"? It certainly wasn't done in our eyes (we took off the amount he was going to charge us to brush paint the cabinets. We didn't want to take the chance to have over spray on appliances, granite etc. therefore we had to go with brush painted cabinets. We knew we would have to pay a new painter to RE-DO and we weren't paying Paul the full amount when we would be paying another painter to try to make it right. As it turned out, it cost us more than that to have painter brush paint, fill holes, sand etc. We still aren't happy that our cabinets now have brush marks. They do look a whole lot better than when Paul "WAS DONE". (we never received an original estimate and that is why I put N/A. And WHY would we have to pay Paul an additional amount to re-do what should have been done correctly in the first place????? Is it our fault that you took the barriers down before you had our approval?
Description of Work: Interior trim work was painted with acrylic paint of a different shade of white, when oil base was used throughout the rest of the house. Painter states he is allergic to oil. Trim work was yellow and he said it was shading. I demanded the original paint be used and it was white!! All trim work was re-painted but we won't ever know if we were charged for that because we never had a bid. Custom cabinets were painted in the garage. Spray hoses were left in the pathway to the door along with large wrench. I slipped and fell cutting my knee and a large knot/bruise on my calf. They didn't even apologize. There were drips of paint from spray gun throughout the cabinetry. Prep work very poor as many areas should have been sanded prior to painting. Many nail holes weren't filled as well. When we voiced our disapproval it was excuse after excuse. To make their poor job right, they wanted to charge us an additional $1200 to brush paint or $2600 to re-spray. We are now living with brush painted custom cabinets finished by another painter. We had no choice but to have them brushed as they were installed as well appliances and granite. We get to look at brush marks everyday. As far as interior walls, quality there was fair. Taped corners were poor. The attention to detail was not in the companies vocabulary.

Response from PAUL'S PAPERHANGING AND PAINTING
OUR COMPANY DOES SUBCONTRACT WORK FOR A BUILDER AND WE WERE HIRED TO DO A PORTION OF A REMODEL JOB. TO BEGIN, WE HAD TO “BAG OFF’’ THE KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM FROM THE REST OF THE HOUSE, THAT IS, WRAP PLASTIC FROM FLOOR TO CEILING, CREATING A LARGE BUBBLE, IN ORDER TO KEEP ALL THE DUST AND CONSTRUCTION CONTAINED AND NOT SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE. WE PAINTED THE WALLS IN A LARGE KITCHEN (APPROX 14X30) AND A DINING ROOM – 2 COATS. WE PAINTED ALL THE WOODWORK AND TRIM IN THE KITCHEN AND THE WOODWORK ON ONE WALL IN THE DINING ROOM. FOR THE TRIM PAINT COLOR, AT HER REQUEST, WE HAD TAKEN HER OLD PAINT CAN AND HAD THE PAINT STORE MATCH THE COLOR, AND THAT WAS WHAT WE USED – WE PAINTED ALL THE WOODWORK 2 COATS. THE HOMEOWNER DID NOT LIKE THE COLOR. SO WE TOOK HER OLD PAINT CAN TO BENJAMIN MOORE PAINTS (WHERE IT ORIGINALLY CAME FROM), THEY MATCHED THE COLOR, TO THE EXACT COLOR ON THE CAN, THEY USED THE ORIGINAL FORMULA. THIS IS WHERE SHE BOUGHT HER PAINT, AND THEY MIXED IT FOR HER. AND WE THEN PAINTED THE WOODWORK AGAIN, A 3RD COAT. HOMEOWNER WAS STILL DISSATISFIED WITH THE COLOR. WE USED THE COLOR SHE WANTED, THE EXACT FORMULA THAT SHE PREVIOUSLY USED. THIS WAS BEYOND OUR CONTROL. NOTE: OLD PAINT RARELY MATCHES UP TO NEW PAINT AS YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER AGING, FADING OR YELLOWING. WE DID NOT CHARGE THE HOMEOWNER ANYTHING EXTRA FOR THIS. WE DID NOT PAINT THE CABINETS IN THE GARAGE. THE CABINETS WERE ALREADY INSTALLED. WE CLEAR COATED THE INSIDE OF THE CABINETS AND THEN TAPED THEM OFF TO PAINT THE OUTSIDE OF THE CABINETS. WE REMOVED THE DOORS AND PAINTED THEM AND DRAWER FACES IN THE GARAGE AND KITCHEN AREA, AS THIS WAS THE ONLY AVAILABLE SPACE. THE PAINT COLOR WAS ACCEPTABLE BY THE HOMEOWNER. THERE WERE NOT ‘DRIPS OF PAINT FROM SPRAY GUN THROUGHOUT THE CABINETRY’, AS STATED. HOWEVER IF THERE WAS A DROP OR TWO IT COULD EASILY BE FIXED WITH THE FINAL TOUCH-UP. THE CABINETS WERE SANDED AND IF A NAIL HOLE WAS MISSED, THIS TOO COULD BE FIXED WITH THE FINAL TOUCH-UP. ABOUT THE SPRAYER HOSE, WE CONTAINED OUR EQUIPMENT IN THE AREA WE WERE WORKING IN, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE AREA WAS BAGGED OFF, FROM FLOOR TO CEILING. WHENEVER YOU HAVE CONSTRUCTION GOING ON THERE WILL BE EQUIPMENT, BUCKETS, HOSES, ETC. WE ARE HOPEFUL THAT ANYONE WHO ENTERS TAKES PRECAUTIONS. WHEN WE WERE DONE FOR THE DAY WE LEFT EVERYTHING IN ONE AREA OF THE GARAGE. WE DID NOT EVEN KNOW THAT THE HOMEOWNER FELL AND WAS INJURED. WE HAD COMPLETED ALL THE WORK EXCEPT THE TOUCH-UPS AND WERE RETURNING THE NEXT DAY. OUR FINAL TOUCH-UPS WOULD HAVE COMPLETED THE WORK, BUT SHE CHOSE TO NOT HAVE US COME BACK. SHE CALLED THE CONTRACTOR AND INFORMED HIM SHE DIDN’T WANT US BACK AND THAT SHE HAD CHANGED THE CODE ON THE DOOR. WE TRIED TO BE RESPECTFUL OF THE HOMEOWNER AND HER HOME. WE COMPLIED WITH ALL HER DEMANDS, AND HONESTLY, SHE WAS VERY DEMANDING. WE DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE WE COULD HAVE DONE TO PLEASE THE HOMEOWNER, BUT THE FINAL TOUCH-UPS WOULD PROBABLY HAVE RESOLVED ALL HER ISSUES. WE DO FIND IT ODD THAT SHE WAITED UNTIL ALL THE WORK WAS DONE AND THEN CONVENIENTLY PREVENTED US FROM FINISHING UP AND GETTING THE REMAINDER OF OUR PAY. YES, THAT IS CORRECT; SHE DID NOT EVEN PAY HER ENTIRE BILL. MONEY IS STILL OWED. SO, IN ANSWERING THE QUESTION: “WAS THE WORK COMPLETED.” THE ANSWER IS NO. DID SHE TRY TO WORK ANYTHING OUT, THE ANSWER IS NO. FOR THE QUESTION: “HOW MUCH DID THE FINAL COST COMPARE TO THE ORIGINAL ESTIMATE?” SHE PUT: “N/A”. THIS WAS PROBABLY BECAUSE SHE DIDN’T EVEN PAY THE ORIGINAL ESTIMATE. NOTE: OUR INTENTION WAS TO COMPLETE THE JOB. SHE DID NOT HAVE TO HIRE ANOTHER PAINTER, SPEND ADDITIONAL MONEY, AND APPARENTLY STILL BE UNSATISFIED WITH THEIR WORK AS WELL. ABOUT THE ADDITIONAL WORK AND FEE: THAT FEE WOULD HAVE BEEN TO COMPLETELY REDO ALL THE WORK THAT WAS DONE, WHICH MEANT STARTING FROM SCRATCH AND INCLUDED PROTECTIVE BARRIERS AROUND THE ENTIRE AREA TO PROTECT THE OTHER LIVING SPACE. WE HAD ALREADY REMOVED OUR BARRIERS.
