We would definitely use Wade again.
Our family initially contacted Wade for a repair on our basement ceiling due to a leak in our refrigerator water line. He was responsive, fair in price and efficient in getting the area fixed, new ceiling installed and even matched our ugly popcorn textture to the older stuff so it didn't look out of place. One could hardly tell that he was there after he finished, it looked so clean! We were so impressed that we asked him to help us out with one of those "honey-do's" which was the install of french doors into our theater room. The install was seamless, quick and again, he cleaned up thoroughly afterwards.
What do you know, it turned out that the water leak from our fridge blessed us with new wood floors compliments of the insurance agency. Of COURSE we were wanting Wade to do the work, since he was so nice to work with previously. Wade did all the gruntwork in picking up wood samples for us to look at (poor guy had to deal with indecisive clients lol)...and went back and forth getting different samples until we finally made up our mind. He even worked with a VERY unresponsive and rude insurance agent on our behalf. Anyone working with that guy (Allstate) is truly a saint. :) He had quite a bit of time to to install our floors as our family took a trip to Los Angeles during the summer. Unfortunately, our "money pit" of a house presented it's typical problems (who doesn't cover an air vent in the floor when laying down flooring? Are you kidding me?) so Wade was a bit behind when we returned from California...and had to come back for a week or so afterwards. Even with this delay, we were so incredibly pleased with the install and attention to detail Wade had while working on our floors. Get this: one day, a mistake was made and somehow the floors in front of our fridge got scratched. Wade WOULD NOT accept our willingness to just have ruined floors...instead he insisted on rectifying the problem by ripping out the damaged floors (in an ALREADY COMPLETE room) and reinstall. Talk about integrity.
As most of you know, when you do one major project, it usually leads into at least one or two other ones...so after Wade was done with the floors, we asked him to come back and build us a "built-in" coat closet/mudroom for our entry. He listened to our wants and needs and built it to our specs. He was in and out in a matter of a day, and we were thrilled!
We are so pleased that he is remodeling a master bath for us in a couple weeks AND remodeling the first level of my husband's parents to accommodate handicapped accessibility.
For us, we will not even entertain another company or get another bid. Simply Beautiful has our home remodeling business for as long as they are in business.
Now it is September 2013 and we are disappointed that it is still incomplete.
The major stuff went very well. As suspected, Wade has a very good eye and made some beautiful enhancements to the room to make it feel cozier without having to move walls. He had listened very well to the little things we mentioned that were important to us and included them all...including outlets under the sinks so that shavers, toothbrushes, etc. can be plugged in and stored out of sight.
The tile work he did really changed the look and feel of the room. As mentioned, he has a keen eye for beauty and gave us lovely options to choose from which really gave not just beauty, but warmth to the room. We couldn't have been happier with the major things.
However, after the majority of the work was done and the bill was paid, we had a few issues to deal with/finish up. First, the texture started falling off the ceiling. It was very strange. We called and he booked a time to come redo the ceiling. After canceling a number of times, he finally showed up and redid most of the ceiling. Alas! The redone texture and paint job on the ceiling was not sufficient to cover the sheetrock underneath. It looks like a poorly done job. In addition, there were a few areas that either re-cracked or he missed altogether. Two were smaller, one was a joint in the sheetrock which started cracking almost immediately and one was near the wall. Since two of the four were pretty bad, we tried for many, many months to get him back out to finish the job.
During the initial fix-the-ceiling trip, we also showed him a few other problems. First issue: the walls were mottled. It was as though the paint was thinner in certain areas making the entire room look like the walls were very dirty in spots. Second, there was adhesive-like gunk on the back of the door which needed removal. Finally, the robe hooks kept coming off the wall.
He took care of the robe hooks and said he would need to research about the wall paint and would get back to us. It was a very, very long time before WE finally contacted HIM and tried to book the repair. After many, many months, he finally came out...
During the long waiting period however, we filled the tub and had water in the kitchen below! The kitchen ceiling cracked and became very water stained. He came out and indicated that the seal on the tub overflow was neglected resulting in water damage to our kitchen ceiling.
Unfortunately, Wade never fixed the damage to the kitchen ceiling even though the damage is a direct result of an oversight of his work. To this day, it is not fixed nor has it been paid for.
When Wade finally came (September 2013) to touch up the bathroom ceiling and repaint (we thought) the walls, he did the bare minimum job. He did not repaint the bathroom walls. He primed and repainted *portions* of the bathroom walls. But, he missed a number of very dirty looking areas. He supposedly fixed two of the four ceiling issues, but the former sheetrock crack now looks like there is a 12 inch long night crawler plastered on the ceiling under the paint. It isn't pretty. And the other area is sad looking too; it looks dented and patched. The final two smaller ceiling cracks apparently we will have to live with because he didn't do them (not to mention the tragedy that remains on the kitchen ceiling which is below the tub).
On that trip, we again showed him the still-present-damage on the back of the bathroom door. All he did was claim he didn't do it. Nice.
Maybe HE didn't do it, but someone on the job we paid him to do DID do it. Now we will have to live with it.
In conclusion:
After final payment, it was a hassle trying to connect with him to patch or fix mistakes or product failure issues. Many times Wade committed to call back or come out, but didn't. When he finally came, he didn't do a thorough job as we anticipated he would.
Wade is creative and has an eye for beauty. He is able to do many lovely improvements and remembers customer preferences very well. Unfortunately, these long months trying to reach satisfactory completion for a job that we started 10 months ago have worn us thin. We will not be using this company for future work as the previous job remains sadly incomplete. We hope he does the right thing and returns to finish the ceiling and walls in the master bath and fix the damage on the kitchen ceiling. If so, we will let Angie's List know immediately. Otherwise, the form and structure of the remodel are beautiful, but the finished bathroom looks shoddy because of poor follow-through on the finished ceiling and walls. And the kitchen below? (sigh)...
FOLLOWING THE RESPONSE: The response is unsatisfactory as the work is still no finished and the damage, cracks, spots on the walls remain. And NO, the damage was NEVER on the door prior to his work nor was the ceiling in the kitchen cracked with the plaster coming off; that happened as a result of the unfinished overflow in the tub (we had some spots on the kitchen ceiling from trying to clean a splatter and removing texture also we had "touch up paint roller marks" from a previous slight water issue, but certainly not cracking and pieces falling IN).
As for making appointments for finishing, it is OCTOBER, almost a year later. This job should never have taken so long to finish - or sorta finish. We will need to repaint the bathroom walls & ceiling and completely redo the kitchen ceiling in order to make it look nicely done.
As indicated above, we were thrilled with the tile work, etc. and have said so above. It has been the lacklustere attention to finishing the job that has been frustrating. We understand mistakes happen. We understand that new products can be problematic. But having the texture drop off a ceiling that was contracted to be painted is something that probably should be fixed by the same contractor, regardless of the age of the drywall (1993). As far as cracks showing up because of temperature... it seems strange that in 20 years living here, we have never had cracking on our ceiling in the bathroom until NOW. If it is product failure, the contractor still has the responsibility to fix it. Yet we are still living with cracks and unpleasant-looking "repairs." Likewise the spackling showing through the paint, which it still IS in many places because only PORTIONS of the walls were repainted (not the entire bathroom), is the responsibility of the contractor (when he left after repainting portions of the walls and "fixing" the bathroom ceiling, we could not tell how things looked because it was still WET). Faucets that come loose within a few months or things falling off walls, or drain overflow not connected properly, again all these things should be handled by the contractor...likewise cleaning up the mess made on the door (we have done our best with it and what the photo shows sadly is as good as it will get). In conclusion, all our issues professional ones. We really liked Wade, both personally and professionally. Professionally, at the start of the job he listened and creatively found solutions to make things lovely. But the attention to FINISHING this job has been sadly neglected (maybe we will contact him to see if something personal is causing a professional delay??). In any case, we continue to hope that it will be completed WELL. We will let Angie's List know if anything changes.
