I went through the manual myself afterwards and learned that the surge suppressor they installed could draw high current towards its end of life. It had no internal shut down mechanism and depended solely on the circuit breaker, in this case a 40 amp breaker, to shut it down. I spoke to the head electrician at Midwest, John, and explained the situation to him. He agreed that there was a safety issue and suggested installing an UL approved surge suppressor that he was familiar with and that had an internal shut down mechanism. I would have to pay for it but they would install it at no additional charge. The second electrician from Midwest determined that the only safe way to install a whole house surge suppressor in my system would be to add a sub-panel so that it could be put on a separate circuit. He wrote down work that would be needed and took photos of the existing panel He said that John would provide a bid for me the following week. After no follow up, I called to see what was going regarding a bid for additional work. The person taking the call said that John would get back to me. He didn't. I called again and again there was no response.
So Home Depot via their surrogate subcontractor, Midwest Electric and Generator, not only did an unsafe installation but then failed to follow up with providing a bid for doing a proper installation. I would have paid the additional expense. I am also left holding the bag for the surge suppressor that I purchased from Midwest.
I subsequently contracted with another company that know how to do the job and provided excellent service. I would not recommend Home Depot Home Services to anyone since I don't think that they use qualified subcontractors. Home Depot also refused to accept my review but said that they would follow up with me. They never did.
To Home Depot's credit, they refunded the cost for the surge suppressor and directed Midwest to refund me what I paid for installation. So I give Home Depot an A for their customer service and standing behind what they sell.
