These are the areas that stand out to me:
High Integrity and Honesty: They delivered what we agreed to, they fixed any issues (very few) immediately, and there was never any question that they would follow through on their commitments. If there was a change in the budget, it was due to a decision I made; they held to their original estimate. If there was any question, I could depend on them to do the right thing.
Attention to detail: w.b. treated my home like it was their own. They never took shortcuts to save money and instead continued to surprise me with details I was not expecting. A specific example, all the doors, baseboards and woodworking was matched to the unique woodworking on the upper level of my home, creating a seamless transition between the spaces. They also did a beautiful job painting the space. These detail touches really stand out and I have received numerous compliments on their work when I show off my new space to friends and family.
Well organized/great project management: I had received a recommendation prior to hiring w.b. but the main reason I hired them was their ability to bring my project to life before the remodel started. I gave them a list of and quot;wants/nice to haveand quot; but had no vision of how it would look. w.b. provided me a sketch along with a detailed estimate. (All other quotes were just one big number!) They helped me understand the big-ticket items and why it was important to do these steps (waterproofing, insulation, plumbing updates, etc.) to do the project right and create a space I would enjoy using. And then they delivered. Communication was great; they listened and answered all my questions. They gave me updates on what was happening and when. They gave me a and quot;heads upand quot; if there was going to be a lot of noise or fumes, allowing me to get out of the house while the work was completed. They knew their timeline and held to it. I also loved that they have their own designer to help with design decisions (layout, tile, paint colors, granite, etc.) She knew exactly when decisions needed to be made to keep the project on schedule and provided wonderful guidance.
As you can tell, my experience with w.b. was great. The true test is the final product and I couldn't be happier with my new basement. There is not one thing that I would change. They delivered everything on my wish list, and then some.
Our experience started with an initial meeting with Scot at our house. We walked the space, talked about what we wanted and initial ideas we had and budget. He showed us photos of work they had done for other people and gave us suggestions about our project from his experience. He talked a lot about quality of work, their standard of finish and customer satisfaction. What we liked about them is that they are a small company but with lots of industry expertise and really cool design ideas. They also have a lot of experience working in our neighborhood so they know the type of home we live in (Linden Hills) and appreciated our desire to blend the old with the new. Our second meeting involved him coming back with a design plan and a budget and from there we finalized the budget and picked a start date. I think at this point, we also met Ronda, our designer for the project. She really listened to us and figured out our style and completely guided us through the process. She never pushed her own ideas on us but gave her opinion when we asked. As for budget, hey have a cool system which allows you to feel confident the budget won't change but allows flexibility to pick exact finishes after you start the work. For example, there was a firm price on all the structural, labor, paint, demo, etc. But, there was an allowance for stuff like countertops, tile, carpet, bath fixtures, cabinetwork, etc. And the allowance was in-line with the type of finish we told him in advance we wanted. So, for example, we knew we wanted Cambria or similar countertops so our budget matched a reasonable amount vs. being was too little and then getting a surprise later.
Once the work started, pretty much everything went according to schedule and was very smooth. (The only surprise was something related to the A/C which was completely out of their control. However, they went above and beyond to help us sort it out and used their industry expertise to give us recommendations and acted as a go-between with the A/C company.) They did almost all the work themselves and what they hired out was to people they work very closely with so it was seamless to us. Once the work started, we met Tim (Ronda's husband), who was our main (and basically only-other than Ronda) point of contact for the entire project-which was really nice. We saw Tim on almost a daily basis and he would always give us updates or ask questions when we saw him. We felt like he was as invested and excited about our project as we were! We set working hours that worked with our schedule in advance of the project and like clockwork, someone was there about 7:30 every morning and they were either gone when we got home from work (6ish) or just cleaning up for the day. They only worked late a couple of times and that was to finish stuff like laying the carpet.
Their standard of work, craftsmanship and creative design was outstanding. We had a support beam taken out and a new one installed in the basement. As a result, a crack appeared upstairs in the wall but that was something they fixed for no extra charge because they wanted it to be right. When they went to the woodworker to make the doors and the crown moulding, they took samples and photos of the ones upstairs and had them copied almost exactly. We had some electrical panels in the guest room that needed a creative solution to cover them while allowing access. Tim designed (in his head) some sliding panels made out of floorboards and stained and then had them made and installed. (They are SO cool!) We had an old factory fire door that our friend gave us and when we asked if we could use it as the door to the gym, Tim was all over it. He had it cleaned and sealed and then had trackwork custom made for the door and installed. Again, it looks amazing. At the same time, they were great at recommending what to splurge on vs. where we could save money.
They were all completely professional and very responsive at all times. They taped off doors to limit dust, cleaned up after themselves each day and everyone who entered our home-whether it was someone from W.B. or a sub-contractor-were friendly, courteous and professional. Our project finished on time and we are thrilled with the results. While we ended up spending more than our original budget, the increases were either out of their control (the A/C issue) or there were things along the way that we decided to upgrade or add.
We could not have made a better decision in choosing W.B. Builders! They were a pleasure to work with and I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to a friend.
